Lol.. Na Scam.. Before they DM u d price they would have checked your profile out to know the price tag to give u. If they check your profile and see you often upload with expensive shiiit (like IPhones, background, clothes, hangout & other shiit) be expecting high price tag way more than the potential price of the item itself. I don't understand the logic behind that, but to me na scam tongue

It will shock you that super markets also do this. You have to go to the cashier to confirm price first. It has happened to me at shoprite

More about this Dm for Price issue,,
This is what we came about some weeks ago.....

A few days ago, I saw some locally handcrafted sandals being promoted on social media that caught my attention because of how beautiful and distinctive they were. I was pleasantly surprised.

So, when I saw a style that had somewhat unique detail and finishes, I was very interested and immediately posted a comment under the picture.

“Love these! How much are they?”

Two days later, when I’d almost forgotten them, I got a notification of a reply.

Please DM for price.”

For those who don’t know, on social media, ‘DM’ means direct message and is the typical way to ask someone to contact you privately.
The delay and their response made me lose interest entirely, so I didn’t bother to ‘DM for price’. And yes, I found it a bother.

What’s most troubling is that this secrecy about price is not restricted to local sandal makers, but is a widespread practice.
Many companies with pages on Instagram and Facebook routinely post pictures without pricing or proper descriptions for a wide range of items, including clothing, shoes, bags, art, accessories, home decor, furniture, hair, skin care products, and even food, and instead ask that you ‘DM for prices’ if interested.

PRICE SECRECY

It is a critical teachable moment for business owners and consumers, particularly in this digital age where e-commerce, effective online communication and customer engagement are key pillars of the future of retail.

Many businesses will either see explosive business growth or devastating stagnation as they navigate the next few years. As a result, I posed the following question on social media:

Why should a customer DM for the price of a product you posted online?
Are you doing business, or keeping a secret?

I then explained key business principles behind transparency, which I will outline shortly.

My post triggered an avalanche of responses. I knew that several consumers had similar sentiments, but when over 1,000 people engaged me on Instagram alone, I was taken aback.

The responses from Facebook and Twitter were also incredible.
People were so vocal and passionate, it was clear I had struck a nerve for many.

I could barely keep up with the hundreds of comments bemoaning this practice of businesses withholding prices and asking customers to either send a private message, call for details, or, worst of all, visit the location.
Users even called out offending companies, tagging them in the comments and insisting they ‘read and learn’.

TRANSPARENCY IS THE BEST POLICY

Although some entrepreneurs had seemingly good reasons for withholding prices from the public, I believe many are losing money and damaging their brands in the process. Here’s why:

Customers love transparency.
They are less trusting of companies that hide prices and may feel that the business is shady and will increase the quoted amount if it perceives the customer can afford to pay more.

Customers like control and real-time information.
A basic customer-service principle is that customers like to feel and be in control.
They’ve become accustomed to real time information in the digital space.
They may also resent being asked to take several actions or steps based on company policies that appear mindless or don’t serve them.

Customers don’t need complexity or extra work. Businesses should make their customers’ lives easier at every opportunity.
In this highly competitive digital space, customers have many choices and lead complex lives.
The easier it is for a customer to buy, the more likely it is they will if they perceive utility.

Stop competing on price.
Compete instead on unique value as competing on price is almost always a race to the bottom.

It’s unproductive.
It can’t be the best use of a business’ time and resources to hide prices then respond to a wide net of people individually with the same answer DM for price

You gave some very good points, personally i always check prices in comments section if the person keeps on replying every person asking for the products price "send a dm" I loose interest immediately!!

"DM for price" allows for price discrimination. Price discrimination is a situation whereby a seller allocates price to his goods/services based on the prospective customer's perceived class. While you are DMing for class, the seller may choose to run a quick perusal on your social media account to ascertain your class and that would have an influence on the amount he or she would spell out for your.

I don't do DM for Price.

Whenever I advertise..I attach prices to them. I even want you to see the prices before coming to my Dm , so we won't have to stress ourselves

Going by the justifications on this thread, majority here are newbs in online marketing.

Sure there are opportunists out there but must some of you act like trolls in the name of making a quick sale and cash...?

If you put your price, expect trolls to comment.
If that would hurt your business, then put the troll down by explaining why the item is priced that way in a professional manner. That attracts potential buyers instead of using the 'DM for price' tactic which would tell others you were lying about the price and force buyers to look elsewhere.

I can point out people who post their prices and are selling well compared to some who sell the same product like they do but use that annoying 'DM for Price' tactic.

I don't

https:///c/2348179847258

I think it's either of 2 things.
1. To dissuade their competitors from knowing how they charge

And

2. To set different prices for clients . If they perceive you are rich, you get a different price. A Nigerian celeb noticed that so she buys incognito.

Based on what I see here on NL some people talk anyhow about prices they have no idea about, someone once posted a used Honda generator for sale and the price was around 40-50k , come and see attacks even myself that is not a generator specialist knows that original honda Japan is expensive but most of those talking were talking from the price of new elepaq and other brands.

Some will post used Bed frame for 250k and people will start shouting they bought new one for 50k , do they know the quality of the product?

So I understand when some people (especially those with high end products to sell) don't post prices, its because of ignorant posters.I still prefer when a price tag is on the item but I don't blame those who don't put price, serious buyers mostly make more enquiries.

They do it because they want to sell something of 1k at 10k

Displaying the price will alert people who kno the actual price, and attract comments that will spoil show for them

This is a great topic, thanks op.

But then, I have noticed on Facebook, Instagram, etc that even when the page or seller puts the price on the title or description, buyers, especially Nigerian buyers will still be asking: "How Much", " How do I Get This Product?", "Where is Your Shop?", etc even after the seller have put the price and how to order visibly on the product page.

So what do you have to say about that grin

They might give you a price openly and immediately another seller will DM you and give you a lower price for the same product.

This is probably the main reason they do it.

You don't term them con artist bro. Don't generalize. All you have got to do is to look away and jump pass like you said.

Remember, every one has his or her way of doing his or her business. It's up to the prospective buyer to determine if such ways are okay with him or her.

With the same DM pattern, na people still dey patronize them cos it's okay with them.

I come in peace!

They want to know the worth of the person asking and hence give a commensurate pricing.
Eg. A watch with a value of 10k can be sold for as high as 50k depending on whose asking.
Soft ig pics= high pricing.
Regular ig pics = normal pricing.
Selfie ig pics= lowest fixed price.

This is criminal though so i don't bother patronizing them except ofcourse for some items that might require modifications like furniture.

SECONDED!!
This is nothing but the absolute truth.
In all our years of shopping online in stores abroad,
We have seldom heard the phrase (DM for price!)
It may exist tho, but we haven't witnessed it so far.

We still have a long way to go as a 'people' , this is about individuals, not even as a country.
We hope we get there soon.

What the heck are they trying to hide

Bro, the main reason they do that is because many people are ready to see the price and even advertise a lower price to u as a buyer. The seller paid for ad and someone is trying to use his ad to sell to his prospective buyer.

Nigerians don't run business properly, they are only doing it to survive.

Tayeni:
I think it's because of indecision on the seller's part. They can't stick to a segment of the market for fear of missing out on sales. They want to sell to highend buyers at crazy prices and also to price sensitive buyers for low margins.

You said it all Tayeni.

If it doesn't work, it won't be adopted by the seller.

From the sellers point. Which I always want to view from people don't even realise that when you have money to spend and you see an amazing product which says, "DM for Price", typing "How much" gives the seller a negotiating lead. Doesn't necessarily means he's a con artist or maybe wants to rip you off.

Secondly, the seller feels excited for every new price enquiry. E dey give hope say you fit convert.

For me, this is one of the major challenges of selling online. 99% of Nigerians will ask for info that the ad clearly provided. They render useless, the efforts in making the ad concise.
