While millions of Nigerians have been wondering why hoodlums have been given a free reign to run riot over Lagos, Ilorin, Jos and many other cities without being checked by policemen, some senior serving officers have explained that most of them are reluctant to intervene following the widespread bashing from the same people they have been trying to protect in the past.

His revelation has shed light on the fact that despite the order of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu for the deployment of Mobile Anti-riot units across the country – on the strength of the widespread destruction his order has largely been ignored.

However, clearly disturbed by the continued looting, Adamu yesterday gave fresh or- ders to the police hierarchy to reclaim the “public space’ and restore normalcy across the country.

However, one of the officers who will undoubtedly be one of those saddled with the responsibility of enforcing this latest directive and who spoke to Sunday Telegraph on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, also said that the #EndSARS protest has introduced a new dimension to policing in Nigeria. He said: “It is clear that people do not like an average policeman.

The general condemnation is overwhelming and not encouraging. You attack his wife and children. Those who live outside the police facilities were traced to their houses and maimed.”

Explaining the main duty of the policeman and his role in the society, the officer said: “You are making peace for the people and not for yourself, you ask yourself what is at stake for you, when the people you are doing it for do not value your life. “It is total abandonment.

Your employer abandons you, the people you are supposed to be safe guarding abandons you when it matters most. “While everyone visits victims of the protests which turned violent, how many policemen who sustained injuries were visited?

“Policemen are the most vilified in the society, while we celebrate criminals who are now roaming the streets with guns. What have the police done to warrant such condemnation and revulsion?

“A mobile policeman was going to work he was hacked to death all due to hatred. It is only a madman that will fight for a man who does not value your life. Let everyone become a policeman and let them safeguard their community!”

Another source also explained that the IG’s admonition that the police officer should show restraint by not shooting indiscriminately further compounded things.

“The hoodlums were aware that they (police) had been instructed not to shoot anyhow and this emboldened them to do what they did.

“The honest truth is that considering the situation on ground it would have been hard for the policemen not to be trigger happy especially with threats to their lives.

“If the order hadn’t been given they would have shot which would have led to a lot of casualties so rather than be put in a situation where the person in question would have to start answering questions as to why he fired, they opted not to show up,” explained the source.

To be a policeman is not by force. If you can't discharge your duties to standard, biko resign. As bad as Nigeria is, I still know some who will willingly take the job of a policeman..

As for me, if I die and dem mistakenly throw police uniform for my grave, I go wake up, relocate go another grave.
I cannot reach great beyond make dem come dey ask me shey I be police for world ni cos I know say for hell fire, na fire wood dem go take some policemen do..

The anonymous police man told Sunday Telegraph

That part where children ,wives and relatives of policemen were attacked really touched me .
O God look at what the actions of some evil policemen especially heartless SARS officials caused.

An average citizen rightly perceived a Police man as an enemy, if the citizens sees you as enemy, who then are you protecting?

NPF is more of a venture than a security outfit.

This is what happens when the police especially the SARS have turned itself into instruments of state and individual terror.Police was created to protect the citizens & not brutality. The police have carve a bad niche for itself & this wound may never heal.

Like the police is not getting the message.
As a public institution sanctioned to protect lives and properties, how have you carried your duties so far?
You turned security and intelligence into public extortion; maiming and killing citizens who cannot pay their way out. In your different stations and commands, citizens watched helplessly as you turn justice on its heard, the highest bidders buy it with their blood money effortlessly while the innocents get victimized daily.

You sent people to their early graves and boast that nothing will happen and believed that nothing will happen until when the masses had enough of your evil and suppression.

For good three years, the masses cried out to stop killing people in cold blood. A plea you bluntly refused, now you want to claim of being victimized.

I feel the pain of the average policeman but as they should understand it is a fall out of years of police dubiousness. I pray that going forward there will be a great deal of understanding between the police and the policed

Keep quite there. Have you even made up your mind to stop collecting bribe? You guys deserve the hate. Even when innocent Nigerian see a policeman on uniform his heart skips, because if they lack money they'll just arrest you and brand you a criminal and lock you up until you pay bribe. I know there is a pay day for every wicked soul.

That's the result when a society elevate yahoo boys and Cultists above her security agency.

How can a sane government and her citizens support the dissolution of SARS. That's the simple reason they have the gut to misbehave.

Abeg, make una dey manage una abandonment make I dey manage my own. #Peace

When they send you stupid messages next time, you think carefully because they will hide with their family in their fortresses. While you may lose your life and, your family have no body. Your sons and daughters will now become hoodlums.

It is on record that I detest Yahoo Boys, but I will never tolerate the continued existence of armed robbers and murderers called SARS.

Dear police, you have absolutely no blame in this mess.

It's the PEACEFUL PROTESTERS that defied government orders, empowered looters and even went online to spread propaganda. They're the ones responsibile for all this mess.

From runtown to DJ switch, they should all be charged to court for disturbing public peace and inciting anarchy.

I just discovered this rare video of the true story behind the Lekki shooting. It's 100% propaganda.

There were no gunshot injuries. In fact all the people who were carried had no blood stain on them. They probably fainted die to fatigue from over standing or over shouting.

Yet these wicked liars want to set the nation ablaze for their selfish gains. Only God can pay them for their sinister acts.

Honestly, I went through the post and I feel for the officer in particular who complained of people's attitude towards the police, but let's be honest, what did he expect? The average policeman also treats civilians as if they're enemies and the result of years of corruption, bribery and brutality by the police is what they witnessed. There is hardly anyone above 20 years who hasn't been harassed for one flimsy reason or the other in Nigeria.

A note to the average Nigeria Police Officer: before you take that bribe or brutalize that person, put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself how they feel about what you're doing. What goes around comes around... Our inhumanity to each other must stop! Without your uniform and gun, you're just another poor, defenseless soul so be kind to the people you're paid to protect and God will be kind to you.
