Yeah we really need that energy in the midfield. Anybody still expecting goals and assists from him will wait a long time. What he will give you is a platform for Bruno and co to do their jobs effectively. Whether it's Pogba, Bruno or VDB playing in front of him, as long as Fred has the freedom to move around the midfield mopping up attacks, they will be fine. Making him sit in front of the defense may not work for him and the team too. So someone has to sit there while he's allowed to do his thing

This is because it makes use of midfielders and strikers which we have plenty of instead of wingers which we have almost none of.

ST: Martial and Rashford. We can switch to Cavani or Greenwood with quality maintained.

Base of the diamond: McTominay. We can use Matic or even use Fred as a last resort.

Left side of the diamond: Pogba. We can use Fred there or even VDB if forced to.

Right side of the diamond: Fred. We can use Pogba there, or McTominay, or VDB, or Bruno.

Tip of the diamond: Bruno. We can use VDB, Pogba, or even Mata there.

This formation withstands injuries and loss of form the best.

Yeah it is not perfect but i think it is a better starting formation than 4-2-3-1 that becomes rubbish immediately Rashford or Greenwood is injured and we start depending on Mata or James.

With regards to the full backs Telles would be the ideal LB in the formation with Shaw dropping to the bench. We have to use AWB until we get a better RB.

Also i do agree that we should be able to switch formation if need be to face a specific kind of opponent but i think the 4-4-2 while not perfect is the best formation we have for now.
