Dude... As I type I'm building something with php. I have been building things with php for years. I'm not quite grounded in nodejs and other Js frameworks, but I can confidently tell you that php gets shit done very fast.

In terms of speed, php doesn't lag behind that much. You'll only ever notice speed difference in mega apps. Please don't let someone discourage you. I am venturing into more js framework, but php has put food on the table for several years.


Have you seen php 7+? How about php 8? Shit is fast, cool and security had been upped!!

And I have been writing for more than 8 years now

Somehow I find php too big die(just like Java). You can begin with it to start off- nothing to lose but plenty to gain.

Php is still the easiest language that get things done easily. All the nonsense installation node brings to you can be frustrating.
And many enterprise environment use PHP. Yes, js libraries are more scalable and faster, PHP can do almost anything on web.

You can start with php. It is more easier to grasp in respect to web dev for most people. But as u gradually understand how the web works tou can migrate to node js and front end frameworks. My opinion though

You asking me to build a WordPress theme from scratch is like me asking you to use JavaScript to analyze topological features using synthetic aperture radar interferometry and rendering the result with React.

Ironically, an ideal way to create a Wordpress website is to create the Theme from scratch, not as hard as some people think. Performance issues already solved just by taking this approach, because readymade themes tend to include a lot of scripts and styles which makes Wordpress sites slow like tortoise. You can also implement your own security easily.

Anyway RIP to those that lost their lives in Arkansas, they have 7 virgins waiting for them.

This is like asking someone, which OS is the best for programming, Windows, Linux, or MAC. Dude they all exist so you can choose which serves you best, which you feel comfortable with, which you like to toil with and which gives you so much joy .
Having an Idea of both or all is not bad too, but take your time. You will find your comfort zone.

So let's blame PHP's slowness on verbose scripts and styles. I really think that it's slowness chiefly comes from the fact that it is mainly the first language most programmers start with fresh out of college, or when learning programming.

Most pick up bad habits and don't observe proper On standards due to their initial novice level. I wouldn't advice anyone to learn php in 2020 cos it's severely limited to backend development. JavaScript is the best cos you can do loads with it, even machine learning.

TLDR; (The short answer is) : LEARN JAVASCRIPT then NODE.JS
