Sanofi, GSK Covid vaccine to be ready late 2021
Published

France’s Sanofi and Britain’s GSK said Friday their Covid-19 vaccines will not be ready until the end of 2021, after interim results showed a low immune response in older adults.

The announcement is a huge setback in efforts to fight the pandemic, which emerged in China last December and has killed over 1.5 million people worldwide.

Sanofi and GSK said the delay in their adjuvanted recombinant protein-based COVID-19 vaccine programme was to “improve immune response in older adults.”

The vaccine’s potential availability had been pushed back “from mid-2021 to Q4 2021,” they said in a statement.

American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech have said their vaccine had proven 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials involving more than 40,000 people.

The vaccine candidate, developed by Sanofi in partnership with GSK, is based on technology that Sanofi has used to produce seasonal influenza vaccines and on immunological agents developed by GSK.

“Phase 1/2 study interim results showed an immune response comparable to patients who recovered from COVID-19 in adults aged 18 to 49 years, but a low immune response in older adults likely due to an insufficient concentration of the antigen,” the statement said.

It said a recent study in non-human primates “performed with an improved antigen formulation demonstrated that the vaccine candidate could protect against lung pathology and lead to rapid viral clearance from the nasal passages and lungs, within 2 to 4 days.

“These results increase the companies’ confidence in the capacity of the adjuvanted recombinant platform to deliver a highly efficient vaccine for all adults,” it said.

The hunt for a vaccine brings up questions like whether unexpected safety issues may arise when the number of people vaccinated grows to millions and possibly billions of people.

– ‘More than one vaccine needed’ –

Also unknown is whether more side effects will emerge with longer follow-up, how long the vaccine remains effective, whether it will limit transmission and how it will work in children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised patients.

“We care greatly about public health which is why we are disappointed by the delay announced today, but all our decisions are and will always be driven by science and data,” said Thomas Triomphe, Executive Vice President and Head of Sanofi Pasteur.

“We have identified the path forward and remain confident and committed to bringing a safe and efficacious COVID-19 vaccine,” he said.

Both Russia and China have already begun inoculation campaigns with domestically produced vaccines despite far less vetting as several other vaccines are being developed in the West.

“No single pharma company can make it alone; the world needs more than one vaccine to fight the pandemic,” Triomphe said.

Roger Connor, President of GSK Vaccines added: “The results of the study are not as we hoped. Based on previous experience and other collaborations, we are confident that GSK’s pandemic adjuvant system, when coupled with a COVID-19 antigen, can elicit a robust immune response.”

The companies plan a Phase 2b study expected to start in February. If the data is positive, a global Phase 3 study could start in the second quarter of next year.

“Positive results from this study would lead to regulatory submissions in the second half of 2021, hence delaying the vaccine’s potential availability from mid-2021 to Q4 2021,” the statement said.

Returns got to 1 mil in 2014(2 years after), dropped to 190k in 2016(2 more years), grew to 1.5 mil in 2018(another 2 years). Finally, it closed at 1.12 mil in 2020.

What a ride! Need to find a way to cut the drawdowns, I think filtering with crude price under usd 40 could improve returns.

Really great move Mehn.
Was wondering...
1. Did you connect straight to NSE and get the data in real-time. The latency may ultimately affect the response of the algorithm. Last I heard it was about 100k annually I think
2. Running the app (software and database) will be okay on your laptop to begin with but as time goes on you would need a desktop high end server (think gaming alien wear computers) for scaling. This will also increase processing time and can affect results also
3. Were you able to do any data preprocessing to clean the data and remove noise, standardization, normalization, principal component analysis and all that good stuff etc. that night improve efficiency of the app. Using more precise data.
4. Comparing the algorithm with AI algorithm could also work. I mean like using neural networks, or regular data science support vector machine or naive bayes etc and combining it with your model as the core.

You are on to something great. I hope you continue to the end. A good software developer and a strong financial expert who knows models will be of extreme benefit to you.

You are doing what Renaissance Technology founder Jim Simons did and today he is one of the richest men in the world. The difference is he had a lot of competition in the USA but given you are in naija you are a pace setter and can reap the rewards early.

A lot or research and trial and error is required but if you are resilient you will make it. Keep going !!!

Abeg sorry everyone for the long post grin grin

The bear has not finished its reign. The hiccup on Friday was a bull trap. Folks should be careful. On the positive side, at current valuations many opportunities abound, but better opportunities will arise after the oncoming bear. No need for panic. Just be prepared to ride the bear and leverage accordingly.

Yes, I used pandas, numpy, matplotlib, os, investpy modules. Python is really great for this kind of stuff because of its many modules It is slower compared to java, c and c# but considering that I am running a monthly based strategy, it is not a problem.

Reuters) - The Nigerian military had located and exchanged fire with gunmen who kidnapped scores of secondary school students in northwestern Katsina state, according to a statement from the president on Saturday.

The gang, armed with AK-47s, stormed the Government Science secondary school in Kankara district at about 9:40 p.m. on Friday, police and locals said. A parent and school employee told Reuters that roughly half of the school's 800 students were missing.

A wave of protests has continued to rock KANKARA town, from where suspected bandits abducted an unspecified number of students at the Government Science Secondary School on Friday night.

A cross section of women and youth from KANKARA took to the streets on Sunday morning demanding immediate release of their children even as the Coalition of Northern Groups has threatened to mobilise Katsina residents on continuous street protest if government fails to secure the release of students of the students in due course.

I think you are onto sonething really really profound here...

If I were to give my own 2 cent opinion, I'll advice you do the following

1. Rather than one month, look at a 1 year time line
2. Buy the 10 worst performers for the out going year and hold them for the next year.
3. Sell them at the end of that year and use the proceeds to buy the 10 worst performers for the year now ending

I strongly feel you'll have better results using this parameters...

All the very best. If you can do this, it would be I teresting to see the results...

Thanks!

Is Insurance Industry the next?

Tony Elumelu (Former MD of UBA) has acquired license to commence operation as Heirs Insurance LTD

Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede (Former Managing Director of Access Bank), now the Chairman of Coronation Insurance PLC, he has significant stake in the company. Coronation Insurance PLC has also signed BANCASSURANCE with Access Bank PLC

Stanbic IBTC Group is lunching into insurance space with Stanbic Insurance Ltd.

Why are banks/bankers now rushing to Insurance sectors?

In a more advanced economy insurance sector is juicy. It's a sign we are advancing though at a very slow pace.
