Visa interview at the Lagos consulate
Time: Dec 21, 07:30am
University of Alabama, Graduate Teaching Assistantship full funding.
Deficit: 1500 dollars.

It's a very long transcript. I was squeezed like cloth.

After the biometric and passing of documents.
VO: where are you going to?
Me: The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
VO: why?
Me: For my masters degree in German Language and Literature.
VO: what do you intend to do with this course?
Me: I co-founded a language school and I intend to come manage the school. I intend to join NATOG {National Association of Teachers of German} and for this, I need years of experience teaching German Language which the GTA would cater for. I also need a C1 German Language proficiency certificate and as confirmed by my graduate advisor, UA is a certified Goethe Institut testing centre and being a student at the department of Modern Languages and Classics automatically qualifies me to write the examination for free. I also intend to write a novel in German.
VO: what type of novels and why this intention?
Me: I am yet undecided but I think I'll tend more towards romance novels. I studied German for my undergraduate and I've always loved reading novels. I desire to do something different, like a Nigerian writing in German.
VO: what would you come back to do?
Me: I would be coming back to manage my language school.
VO: who would be managing it while you're away?
Me: I've put some staff in place. My highly efficient students will teach the new ones and I've spoken with the others, we're moving online, thanks to technology.
VO: how much do you earn?
Me: Between 100, 000 to 150,000 naira monthly.
VO: when did you start this language school?
Me: I started teaching in 2016 but I officially registered the school this year.
VO: May I see a proof of registration of the school?
Me: unfortunately not, the certificate isn't ready, they said to wait for 60 days, it's just about the 42nd day.
VO: who are the students?
Me: interested individuals who want to go to Germany and need the language proficiency.
VO: Are you married?
Me: No
VO: do you have children?
Me: No
VO: Have you ever been out of the country?
Me: Yes, to Germany, Togo and Benin republic.
VO: how often to Germany?
Me: Once, in August 2017. I was awarded a DAAD scholarship for a summer language course.
VO: and the other places?
Me: While I was an assistant lecturer at the University of Ibadan {NYSC PPA}, I went with the students and lecturers to Togo to discuss the possibility of partnership with the German language students of the university of Lome. On our way, we stopped at the University of Benin Republic to see the department of German language.
VO: Did you apply to other schools?
Me: Yes
VO: why did you pick UA?
Me: UA is all wins for me, I was offered GTA to garner enough experience, I will be able to write my C1 proficiency exam, I would be able to develop fluency in English Language too and with my tuition being covered and with monthly stipends, how could I say no?
VO: I will be issuing your visa today...okoto meow meow skrrrrr...
I went deaf and was in a hurry to meet my best friend. We got admitted to the same school, same course with GTA, we are roommates and we founded the language school together. She got her visa approved on 24th November. She's been delaying her transcript as we wanted to post them together which God allowed.

The power of prayer, faith and preparations can never be over emphasized. I bought my flight ticket and completed my shopping in faith since 3 weeks ago and I'm grateful they're not going to waste.
Thank you for the encouragement here, I deem it fit to give back.
To people awaiting interviews, you're gonna be happy at the end.
A friend sent me his approved transcript too, he's not here but I'll post it with his permission.

On my way to eat food with my supposed reciprocity fee. I have to add that my appointment was rescheduled 3 times.

Good morning sir
Please I need assistance on traveling to US or UK for further studies.

Please I need guide on how much to spend from a-z and the guidelines to follow.
Thanks and Regards

Status Approved
Lagos Embassy
Nov 24th
Graduated from University of Ibadan (2019)
CGPA- 6.4/7.0
Course- German Language
Admitted to- University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
Course- German Studies

I waited this long to share my transcript because my best friend and I got admitted to the same university (graduate teaching assistant with monthly stipend, tuition waiver), but her interview was scheduled for today after the embassy rescheduled her appointment twice and I can’t share a testimony while my partner’s’ is pending.

The white guy inside the room with long hair interviewed me, it was less than 3 minutes.

VO: after the usual ‘fingerprint, remove nose mask, drop your passport and I20, he asked: where are you going?’

Me: I’ll be going to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for my Masters in German Studies.

V.O: Why University of Alabama?

Me: (I wasn’t as fluent as this, but this is 90% accurate) I cofounded a Language School here in Nigeria with my best friend and we’ll need to garner more experience to hone our language skills and since I’ll be working as a graduate assistant for 2 years, it’ll help to make my teaching skills not to rusty before I come back, as we hope to expand our language school. The University of Alabama also has an accredited Institute where I can write my C1 German Language Proficiency exam after my studies.

V.O: Okay, so why US, not Germany

Me: Well, like I said, I got the opportunity to teach as a graduate assistant for 2 years. Germany will only give me the Opportunity to learn the language and I already speak very good German. I want to hone my teaching skills.

V.O: (nods his head then asks in really poor German ) Sprechen Sie Deutsch? (Meaning, do you speak German)

Me: Ja, ich spreche Deutsch.

V.O: okay

Me: (continues) Ich habe das an der Uni studiert (meaning, that’s what I studied in the University)

V.O: oh! No no, I don’t speak German, that’s the only thing I know how to say.

Both of us laughed out very loud.

V:O: Are you married

Me: No

V.O: Do you have kids?

Me: No

V.O: I’ll be approving your Visa, pay your reciprocity fee etc etc (I was too excited to hear the rest. That thing they say is very true)

I’m a silent reader, thank you all for your transcripts that helped to boost my confidence. Though I’m a pretty confident person, lol, but I can’t underestimate the power of prayer and the help of the Holy Spirit (who actually told me about 2 days to my interview, the exact question to prepare for and those were the exact main questions I was asked - (why University of Alabama, why US not Germany). The V.O didn’t even ask for any documents whatsoever

I didn’t hold any mock interview, the process of getting admitted up until getting a Visa was just me and God.
If I’ll give any advice, it’s let your reasons for traveling be genuine, even if you’re not coming back and rely on God completely, if you’re a Christian.

My best friend also got approved today to the glory of God, it was a long wait from Nov 24 till this morning, filled with tension, prayer and acts of faith.
I wish everyone of us the very best

I am self funding because I want to use the money my dad gave me ~ $25000 to start my private hospital to fund the education in USA. He doesn’t want me to travel out for MPH but I want to do this on my own using that money hence the reason I can’t get his bank statement. I have my savings of about $8000. A total of about 33000. It indirectly looks like I am funding myself

Ok, thanks for the clarification.
Now my question is this, lets look at this 2 scenarios:
i have a family member who want to sponsor me, which is better,
1.he transfers the money to account, i present my account statement as self sponsor and answer questions on what i do OR
2.I present him as the sponsor, his account statement and answers questions on why he want to sponsor, his relationship with me and what he does

thanks

Since you have deferred your admission to Fall 2021, there's no point being in a hurry to have an interview. Book close to your new resumption date.

BTW, where are you seeing early dates? And what dates are you seeing?

BSc Mechanical engineering (transferring from unilorin)
COA: $44000
NO FUNDING OR SCHOLARSHIP (JUST GRACE)

Me: Good morning
VO: good morning
VO: Your I-20 and passport please
Me: Sure here!
VO: So you're currently in university of ilorin?
Me: Yes I am
VO: Studying mechanical engineering?
Me: Yes
VO: and you're looking to transfer yh?
Me: Yes
VO: Who is this (referring to my aunty on my I-20)?
Me: She's my aunty and God mother
VO: oh okay. What does she do?
Me: She's a legal practitioner, she owns and runs her own law firm. She's also into real estate, she's an estate developer, she has quite a number of properties here in Lagos, Abuja and port-harcourt. She sells and rents houses
VO: what properties does she own in Lagos?
Me: she owns some residential houses and a mall
VO: Ohh a mall? Where?
Me: Yes a mall in ikeja
VO: Ohh okay. So why did you choose this school?
Me: I chose KSU because it offers 3 courses I'll be taking as an undergrad amongst other courses which are manufacturing engineering, internal combustion engine, mechatronics engineering fundamental and these course align with my career path cause I want to pursue a career in a Nigerian owned automobile organization here in Nigeria after graduation, I have dreams of working at innoson motors. Also the curriculum will train me in basic science, engineering principles and I'll be able to develop skills in computer aided design and this also plays a vital role in the automobile world. The curriculum also offers a balance of coursework in engineering analysis, engineering design and engineering practices and I'm confident I'll fit right in.

Me: Yes I have her bank statements (passes it)
VO: (goes through and passes it back) types for a long time... Your visa is approved (slips the white paper). Go to window 2.......(didn't quite hear what he said but I deduced he said I should go there and they'd let me know where I'll be picking my passport)
Me: So when do I get my passport
VO: Err I have to stamp it first before returning it to you.
Me: (I laughed) I know but when can I pick it up.
VO: they'd let you know at window 2
Me: okay thank you very much

THIS HAS GOD WRITTEN ALL OVER IT. I really can't overemphasize that. There's absolutely nothing He can't do. This admission process started off as a bedside discussion with my girlfriend cause of the ASUU strike issues and before you know it, God started unveiling Himself at every step of the way.
From delays with procuring my transcript from unilorin during the lockdown to delays with them sending it. I always kept the faith that God will come through for me and He did. Please and please, pray like never before.

The VOs are humans like you and I. They just want to have a conversation with you so try as much as possible to be as relaxed and calm as possible. Also try and exude confidence, it helps with your flow of speech. Prepare well, put in the required work, pray like your life depends on this(saying this from experience) and watch how God will come through for you.

This thread had a huge impact on my success and I want to thank y'all for the immeasurable information you place on here.

Major shoutout to @fairheart. Thank you for everything you did to help ease the process. Those mocks really had an impact and I'm thankful. God bless you always.

Good luck to everyone with interviews ahead. You'd be approved by His special grace. God bless us all.
