☆ AWHILE* ☆

Man, it's not easy to write... cry

Tricia searched for answers, as she was determined to know who Patrick Nielsen was, and why her mother had grown so attached to him.

Patrick on the other hand was still yet to regain consciousness. His ribs were broken, and nothing other than a miracle would get him back on his feet!

Lucille on her part didn't want to give up. She believed that everything would be alright, and her daughter would have her father back... this she had in mind.

"Hang in there, Patrick," she spoke amidst tears—”Your daughter needs you. I need you! I know that I've wronged you all these years, but if you would just open your eyes, I promise to make everything go back to the way it was... to the way we were before. Remember the time you promised that you were never going to leave my side? Oh, I know you've forgotten, but I never for once did, Neil. Our love was the most magnificent thing that could conquer all odds, but I ended up ruining everything. I ruined it. You have no idea how I lived knowing the fact that I was the cause. I'm really sorry, my love. I'm so sorry—" she kept muttering, her head placed on the little space beside him.

She loved Patrick—she still yearned for him. But all those years she was with Raymond, she couldn't bring herself to feel something for him. She couldn't deny the fact that she needed him now, and was so eager to tell her daughter about her biological father, but was scared that it'd end up breaking their bond.

All this started with her, she told herself. She was the cause of everything—the one night in LA, which should have been a normal night for her, turned out the opposite.

She had met him again—her long time college sweetheart, who she never thought that she'd see, until then.

An all-too-familiar pain had tightened her throat the moment she saw him in the conference meeting that she had attended, making it exasperating for her. She wondered how this one guy she thought she had long forgotten could still quicken her pulses.

She had wanted to avoid him then, but her inner mind had already taken control. It really was him, she thought to herself, a fiery bolt so great taking control of her body with such force. The shock was electric and paralyzing... one she had never felt in years.

His name was Patrick Nielsen. "But you can call me Niel," he had said once upon a memory.

She remembered those days they would walk in the moonlight. And how she'd call him all kinds of names—darling, love—all she could never forget.

It was her blinding love that made her commit the greatest sin of all. And now, the consequences were all hers to bear...

EPISODE FORTY-THREE

FULL

Tricia searched for answers, as she was determined to know who Patrick Nielsen was and why her mother had grown so attached to him.

Patrick on the other hand was yet to regain consciousness. His ribs were broken, and nothing other than a miracle would get him back on his feet!

Lucille on her part didn't want to give up. She believed that everything would be alright, and her daughter would have her father back, this she had in mind.

"Hang in there, Patrick," she spoke amidst tears—"Your daughter needs you. I need you! I know that I've wronged you all these years, but if you would just open your eyes, I promise to make everything go back to the way it was, to the way we were. Remember the time you promised you were never going to leave my side? I know you must have forgotten, but never for once did I, Neil. Our love was the most magnificent thing that could conquer all odds, but I ended up ruining it. You have no idea how I lived knowing that I was the cause of everything that happened between us. And now, I really hope you can forgive me."

She loved Patrick—she still yearned for him. But all those years she was with Raymond, she couldn't bring herself to feel anything for him. She couldn't deny the fact that she needed him, and was eager to tell her daughter that her father has been there all along.

All this started with her, she told herself. The one night in LA, which should have been a normal one, turned out the opposite.

She had met him again—her long time college sweetheart, who she had never thought she would see. An all-too-familiar pain had tightened her throat the moment she had seen him in the conference meeting. It was exasperating for her, and she wondered how this one guy she thought she had long forgotten could still quicken her pulses.

She had wanted to avoid him then, but her inner mind had already taken control. It really was him, she thought to herself—a fiery bolt so great taking control of her body with such force; the shock... a paralyzing one—one she had never felt in years.

His name was Patrick Nielsen. "But you can call me Neil," he had said once upon a memory.

She remembered those days they would walk in the moonlight. And how she'd call him all kinds of names—darling, love—all she could never forget.

It was her blinding love that made her commit the greatest sin of all. And now, the consequences were all hers to bear!

"No! No, please. Let me go!"

  "You have failed me, Lucille."

"I didn't mean to, Raymond. Please don't do this. Don't kill me!"

"So, you say you keep having this dream about Dad?" Tricia's question rolled in as Lucille narrated the dream to her.

"Mm-hmm. Baby, do you think your Dad's trying to tell me something?"

"I don't know. I'm not the one going out with his coworker."

Her mother's countenance fell on hearing her say that. "Baby, I didn't call so you could start criticizing me or anything,"

"Don't blame me! How is he anyway?" she asked, half-concerned.

"He's... stable!" came her mother's reply.

  "Good. Gotta go now."

  "You're in a rush,"

"Uh, do you have any other thing to say? I've got class, you know?"

  "Oh, well. Take care, okay?"

  "Sure thing."

  The line went dead.

Tricia's been giving her the cold shoulder, and she couldn't help but feel bad about it.

She sighed and looked back at the sleeping figure... he was yet to move a muscle, she observed, her chin rested on her clasped fingers.

Her stare lingered worriedly, bitter tears welling up in her eyes. If she had not run out like that, none of this would have happened, she wept helplessly.

  "Lu-Lucille... Lu-Lucille..."

She raised her head at the call. "P-Patrick?"

  "M-my d-daugh ...ter. M-my..."

"Oh, Patrick. Please stop talking. I'm going to call the doctor right away." she spoke breathlessly.

  "Tricia," he muttered. "Tricia—"

His breathing became abnormal, as the beeping noise that came from the machine drowned out his voice.

"Patrick! Patrick, no. No! Doctor! N-Nurse! Nurse!" she screamed on seeing him jerking back and forth.

Patrick was going to die, her negative mind roared to life. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her, calling to the attention of the two nurses she saw in the hallway.

The machine had already stopped beeping, and Patrick was no longer moving.

She didn't want to believe the voice that was telling her that he had left this world. She didn't want to believe, until the doctor confirmed it.

"Please, ma'am. You have to wait outside." one of the nurses said to her the minute the doctor came in.

She insisted that she stayed, while they did everything to save her lover's life.

She watched as the defibrillator was placed on him, and the reading came proving he was really gone.

Patrick, you have to fight this! It's not your time yet. You have to fight this! You can't leave me now. No! No, you can't leave me! You promised not to leave me. You promised you'd never leave me! Patrick... Patrick!

I could see everything that was going on. Lucille was clearly calling out to me but I couldn't touch her in anyway. Our love story shouldn't end like this. It shouldn't! I needed to be with my daughter. I had to see her one last time—

  "Patrick! Patrick, look at me!"

I turned to see who was calling me. It was the least person I expected to see. "Mother?"

"Yes, son. It is your mother," she smiled. "You have to come with me. Come with me, Patrick. Your father and I have been waiting for you." she stretched out her hand, beckoning to me to come.

She was dressed in a white robe, her head graced with a golden crown, as her skin shone brightly, as though decorated with gold.

I'd never seen anything like it, and couldn't understand why she was demanding that I go with her. I knew my time was yet to come, as I couldn't leave my daughter just yet. How can I watch while she lives without a father? No! I must go back.

  "Patrick, you must come!"

"I'm sorry, mother. But it's not my time." I said, and with that—she was no more!

FORT-THREE

SHORTS

Patrick was gone. I couldn't believe that he really was. The doctor tried all that he could to save him—but still nothing.

My tears couldn't stop flowing, and I wished that I could take back the hands of time, so everything would go back to the way it was.

Patrick was gone, and I was going to live with the guilt that I killed my baby's father. Oh! How will I ever live?

"Achoo!" a light sneeze alerted me, and I turned to make sure that I had heard right.

"Patrick?" I called, and placed my hand on his, his eyelids making effort to slide open.

I stared with mouth agape, not believing he was actually moving. He's alive! He's really alive! I shed tears of joy as song of praises filled my lips—my baby's father really lives!

EPISODE FORTY-FOUR

Patrick was gone. I couldn't believe he really was. The doctor tried all that he could to save him, but still... nothing.

My tears couldn't stop flowing, and I wished that I could turn back the hands of time, so everything would be like the way it was.

Patrick was gone—I was going to live with the guilt that I killed my baby's father. Oh! How shall I live?

Achoo—a light sneeze alerted me, and I turned to know what was going on.

"Patrick?" I gasped, getting my hand on his swiftly, as I watched as his eyelids made effort to slide open.

I stared with mouth agape, not believing my eyes. He's moving! He's really moving! I screamed with joy, holding him tightly.

Mom called me last night, insisting that I came home, as it was urgent. I wondered what it was, and why she was calling me out of Fitchburg just like that, with the tag ' urgent', as she had used to keep me in suspense, making me catch the first bus back to Henson.

"Hey, Mum," I greeted, beckoning to Derek to come in.

"Oh, hi, sweetie. You're here." she returned my greeting with a kiss, taking no notice of our guest.

"Dad?" Derek's voice got Mom and me glued to the spot.

"Derek, did you just say Dad?" my eyes widened hearing him call Mum's boyfriend that.

You should definitely scratch the B-word out, 'cause Mum would definitely yell our heads off if she heard us saying that.

"grin-Dad?" Mum stammered, as though the words felt heavy in her mouth. "Patrick, what is this?" she rolled her eyes at him, as Patrick sat up slowly.

"I can explain," his words reminded me of Mum's.

What the hell is happening in this family? I thought to myself.

I looked at Mum and she threw me a "Don't say anything" look, my humble self catching the signal—as my lips remained shut.

"Who is he?" Mum's question came simultaneously with Derek's sounding voice.

"Girlfriend?" Mum froze at the spot on hearing Derek tell his father who I was to him. "No! No, you two can't be together,"

I looked at mum as her whole body shook intensely. This certainly wasn't how I was going to introduce Derek to her—it was going to be a surprise. But it turned out hers was waiting for us to come.

"I don't understand, mother. What do you mean by we can't be together?"

"You just can't!" she shouted to my surprise.

"M-mum," I called shakily, inching closer to her. "Mum, are you all right?"

She trembled even more, the sweat on her forehead glistening for everyone to see.

"Mum!"

"Because Patrick is your father! He's your father, Tricia!"

"What?!"

When will my comment section start bubbling o grin grin? Is it when I've left Nairaland for good? Cause very soon you people will not see me anymore undecided. Why the silence anyway? I really wanna know. Even when there's no update, no one even cares to know what went on. It's somehow (heartbroken) cry cry At least Ideadoctor kiss and Casanova kiss have always been encouragingsmiley... the rest, what's wrong? I can't take silent readers on my story cause I know really well that I'm not one who reads someone's story and not drop a word or two. So please... please do try and reciprocate it, so Jess won't get emotional this night shocked cheesy.

I'm already discouraged seriously. I'm one person who gets hurt easily, so I'm giving up on this story. If not for the million views it has gotten on higher websites, I'd have torn the script into shreds and that'd be the end of my campus life.

My father? M-my father?" I blinked for a second and stopped, no word coming out of my mouth.

"Trish? Baby?"

I laughed out loud, scaring my mother.

"Baby. Baby, what's funny?"

"You are," I continued, holding my belly. "You actually thought that I'd believe that. I watched them lower my father into the ground!" I gritted with contempt. "You are blinded by love, mother!" I spat in her face. I looked at Patrick, then at Derek—and turned to face my mother again. "Mother, what has happened to you?" I asked. "Why would you say such a thing when you're aware that my Dad is resting heaven?" I had no idea what I was saying. It seemed I was going mad with every word I was uttering. "You can't possibly say that Patrick is my father... and Derek is my brother," I jeered at the thought. "And how are you, kind sir? I thought you were bedridden?"

"Belinda!"

I turned as my mum called me back to my senses. "Mum?" I staggered backwards as I felt someone's hands behind me. "grin-Derek?" I looked at mum again. "Mum. Mum, tell me you're not saying the truth! Tell me you're not!" I freed myself from Derek's arms and walked towards her. "Mum, tell me... tell me Patrick isn't really my father! My father is dead. I have no father. Mum, tell me this isn't true!"

"Baby—" she made to hold me and I pushed her away.

"No! No, don't come any closer. I wanna die. I don't want to live anymore! I want to die. I want to die! I slept with my own brother! My flesh and blood!" I yelled so loud, wishing the spirit of death would take me at that instant.

Patrick is my father... and Derek—my brother! How am I going to live with the thought? I wept convulsively as mum's arms came around me.

I could tell she was crying too. I didn't know whether to hate her at that moment, or to let my emotions not get the best of me. All this time I had thought daddy was my real father, only to realize that my own mother took me as a fool.

I had a sister all along and dad never bothered telling me? No! Tricia can't be my sister. She can't be. "Dad, tell me this isn't true?"

"Calm down, son. I'm not feeling well."

"Not feeling well?! Dad, what was the last thing you told me when I called?"

"Son..."

"No! I am not your son! You lied to me. You lied to me all these years! You made me stay with aunt, and even had me bear your middle name all because you had a family you never told us about?" I rolled my eyes in disbelief. "Did mum know about this? Did mum know that you had another woman you never said a word about, even after she died?!"

"Son, please..."

"Don't call me your son!" I snapped with rage. "If I were your son, you would never have lied to me!" I stormed off, not bothering to look back.

EPISODE FORTY-FIVE

Patrick was stunned by the whole scene. This wasn't how he wanted his son to know about Lucille. He had no idea the two siblings were one day going to bump into each other. If only he had known the consequences, he would not have hidden the truth from him.

Oh, Emma, I wish you were here, this was Patrick's wish. If not his darling wife died in childbirth, she would still be here with him. Although he had Lucille, he missed his wife so much, as she knew just the right thing to say, especially when it came to their son. He had to tell him the truth, it dawned on him. He had to know now the truth about his daughter was out in the open.

PATRICK'S ☆ P.O.V ❤

I had just been discharged from the hospital, thanks to Lucille. I had no idea what was waiting for me, until my son came walking in through that door.

How could I have never seen this?

Derek's been telling me all about this fancy sweet girl he had met, never knowing it was my daughter. No. It's high time I told him the truth.

"Why didn't you tell me you had a son with Emma?"

I raised my head to see Lucille glaring at me. I didn't want to say anything that'd end up getting the situation worse, so I said nothing and laid back down.

"Oh, you're ignoring me now?"

"Because I never thought a day like this would come!" I snapped.

"Well, now it has. Are you happy?"

"Not at all! Besides, I wasn't the only one keeping things..."

"That's different, Patrick! This is exactly why I didn't want Tricia knowing about what went on years ago."

"And is that why you hid her from me?"

"Patrick..."

"You know, you're unbelievable!" I wished to be out of her sight... and also regretted not ever telling her about my son. She deserved to know the truth. And it's time she heard it from me.

"You have to know something,"

She raised a brow. "What is it that you wanna say?"

I sighed and sat up slowly, feeling my sides as they hurt. "A little help please?" I smiled up at her.

And she gave a shrug. "Still mad."

"Oh, come on,"

"Our daughter is being caught up in this, Patrick,"

"And my son?"

She gave no reply. How am I sure she's ready for this? Can I really trust her with something this big?

"Patrick, quit playing games and say whatever thing you wanna say." she snapped me out of thoughts.

"You really do think I'm playing? Huh?" I asked her.

And she swallowed hard. "No—" then added, "Just can't believe you hid something so big from me."

So she thinks that's even bigger? I smiled within me.

"So... are you gonna say what you have in mind? Or you can let me go see how my daughter's doing?"

I nodded slightly and asked her to sit. "You need to know something," I started lamely. Shit! "I mean, there's something you should know—” Bleep!

"Something?" her brows arched up again.

It was funny the way it did; the way she looked at me. I couldn't help but chuckle at that moment. And I guess that did it...

"Now you're laughing," she made to stand.

"No, I'm not," I got my face back to normal. "But I'm serious," I said with shoulders shrugged. "I know I should have told you earlier, but, um..."

"Yeah?"

I moved my lips to talk as the doorbell rang, stopping me from saying what I had in mind. Saved by the bell! I heaved a sigh of relief, happy it actually rang.

"I'll go see to it,"

I let her do so, not bringing the topic up later on. If anyone was going to hear it, it should be Derek! I thought inwardly, hoping it was the right thing to do.

❤ TRI☆CIA ❤

I clung to Dad's picture, remembering the times we spent together. I missed him—if only he was here to comfort me. Memories of the beautiful moments Derek and I shared rushed in suddenly, sweeping dad's off—from when we hung out for the first time to the time he and I became a couple, they were there. We had made out not just once, not just twice—and as though it wasn't enough, I had ended up carrying his child without him ever knowing. I couldn't live like this. I couldn't live with the feeling that I've been in love with my half brother. I placed the picture frame back where it was and got my feet down on the floor. I was going to put an end to this—an end to everything that had yielded nothing but pain!

I got up and started toward the wardrobe. I got it open in no time and searched for a pair of scissors... since a knife wouldn't be that easy to get, with mum on the lookout. I found it just below tons of dresses loaded inside, and was glad to know that I'd be seeing my beloved father again; the thought—making me beam with smiles... though my heart throbbed with pain.

I took the scissors out, ready to stab myself with it, as the sound of the door hung my hand in the air.

"Tricia!" Nanny Pearl's voice came.

"N-Nanny?"

"What are you doing?"

"Nanny, I can't live like this anymore. I wanna die!" I returned my gaze to where the scissors stood suspended in the air, ready for whatever thing that came after

"Tricia! No! No—Lucille!" she called loudly.

•~•~•~•~•

I heard my name called. Nanny Pearl must have seen something that made her yell in that way. What could it be?

"Seems that daughter of yours is at it again," Mrs. Nguyen, our neighbour, said to me.

Smiling faintly, I excused myself and left to answer the call, telling her that I'd be back when everything was sorted out.

"Oh, what has that girl done now?" I muttered under my breath.

"Is everything all right?" Patrick asked as I walked past him.

"Doesn't seem like it," I said with a shake of my head as I hurried upstairs.

"Nanny? Nanny—"

"Lucille!"

The sound was coming from Tricia's room, like I had thought. But Nanny Pearl's screams were quite alarming. Tricia wasn't playing any pranks on her—meaning it was something different.

"Nanny!" I quickened my pace, flushed with fear.

"Oh, Lucille. Please hurry. Your daughter has gone crazy." her panic stricken voice greeted me as I reached the top of the staircase. "Nanny. Nanny, what is it?"

"Hurry! Hurry, child,"

She dragged me with her as I followed, moving into Tricia's room as I saw my only child attempting to kill herself.

"Tricia!" I shouted. "Baby? B-aby, please drop the scissors,"

She brought her hand down and pointed its end at me. "You are the cause of this, mommy," she said as tears dropped from my eyes. "Now tell me. Why should I listen to you?"

"Baby, please just listen! Don't do this, my love,"

"I said don't come any closer!" she said in all seriousness. Was she really going to stab me with the scissors? What has gotten into my daughter?

"Mum, you are the one who cheated on dad. You slept with another man behind his back and never told him about it. Why, mother? What did dad ever do to you?!"

"I-I know. I know I've wrong your dad in so many ways... and even you. But please honey... please put the scissors down. I'm really sorry for everything. Just drop the scissors, okay? Please baby—" I had never known this pain. I had come to realize that my own daughter hated me. I was the cause of what she had become. If anyone was going to be blamed, I was. I made my daughter this way, and now she was never going to forgive me.

"No answer?"

I gulped.

"Then I guess it's goodbye!"

I watched the scissors swing into motion, and the lights went out.
