Nice one.
Kindly state the textbooks that u used.
It will go a long way in helping the guy and others
Regards.
Nothing much. 2 textbooks for each subject

Lamlad and new school physics (lamlad once and new school twice)
Lamlad and new school chemistry (lamlad once and new school twice)
Essential and modern biology (modern once and essential twice)

And just this Dele Ashade utme English textbook (Lol, I can't remember the name again) for English.

Coupled with jamb remix series. They are these very valuable past question that are arranged by topics and with superb explanations (I did these last like 2 weeks to exam) coupled with myschool app. I know there are not a lot of time for all these again because I started all these in October 2019 so I had about 5 months of preparation. But do what you can and study smart. All these doesn't necessarily mean I did that well in Jamb, but I am grateful I went through all that preparations and my score was fairly okay

Lol, I have not read since I sat for jamb though as I picked ebsu and no putme so I am pretty dry upstairs right now.

Great medics in the house I greet you all, happy new year.. please I need your advice, am 25 years old, I will be enrolling for jamb this year, aspirant of mbbs though..I need guidelines on how to score very high in utme/ post utme pls help me out, am willing and ready to pay the price no matter how Herculean the task maybe.. I have even devise my personal time table for intense studying, 18hrs per day.. All I need is guidelines from experienced persons to put me through, your encouragement is also needed because I have had terrible discouragements from my peers.. Family issues made me waste years at home, my father was suffering from stroke it affected my education so bad, plus other factors that I wouldn't like to disclose, help a brother, God bless you all...
Although I am not in the best place to tell you what to do. I will be sincere with you sir I am currently 20. Yes I am Young soon approaching 21. I am currently doing side hustle and computer work for people to get money to invest more in my Business. I am waiting to get into vet school which is 6 years course. I know I will spend extra two three years making it 28 years hopefully I will be done. I won't do residency. Maybe masters but I will go into vet business.
Medicine on the other hand is different except you want to be a General practitioner. Even if its Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Paediatrics you will spend close to 5years. I am just estimating 32 you will be done with med then residency makes it 37 years. There are other courses related to it like Dentistry or even Nursing and maybe Radiography will help you make the relevant income to travel abroad go for extra training and maybe work for sometime and return. If the UK is in your mind Dentistry, Radiography and Nursing is the best bet.
Medicine is a lifetime thing. Doctors are always needed but Age and experience matters. I am not here to deter you or be an obstacle to you so don't misquote me.
There's life after med school that I know of and it is way tougher than being in med school.
Dentists, Nurses and Radiographers are highly sorted in the UK. If it is Nigeria you want to remain Nursing and Radiography is best from communications I have made. If you study medicine here and you want a field like radiology, anesthesiology, cardiology, neurology and oncology and cancer therapy which is highly sorted, we know the politics involved.
Take this from me like your kid brother giving you Advice. He might speak funnily but still makes little sense.
Incase some of you want to question, insult me in mentions, I did not cook up this things I wrote, My Family doctor was formerly working in National Hospital Abuja as a Family Medicine consultant and he is currently working with UNICEF. So read and re-read

The person you quoted is not confused on which course to study. He made it clear that it is Medicine, there's no need owaisting your time and energy to write epistle and at the end, you couldn't give the right response to his question.

It's time to move on from your past bro. The personal time table is quite okay and it doesn't necessarily have to 18 hrs per day..To be sincere, you may not be able to meet that target each day except perhaps you're an exceptionally committed human being. I believe by now you should have know your strengths and weaknesses as regards the subjects you'll be writing. Complementing your texts with Lamlard's texts will improve your understanding of those subjects and for English, you can get the "invisible teacher". Make sure you read to know everything in those texts and this requires ample time and commitment..

Thank you sir I appreciate...As regards my timetable it really work for me, I finish p.n okeke physics textbook in 2days it even made understand physics better than ever..I do take little breaks like 30minutes for daydreaming...You see sir, reason why am I want to be a doctor is because of the sickness that tormented my dad for 18yrs, he had stroke back then we were poor as church rats, no good treatment for him, nobody came to his rescue even his blood brother living next door to us never even for one day came to check on him when he was deteriorating with this sickness, I was helpless wishing I were a doctor to save him from excruciating pains he encounters on daily basis even at night we can't sleep well because of his cry for help..The stroke reached its climax and affected his brain, his vision ie eyes etc to cut the story short I watched him died a helpless man..And I vowed to be a doctor no matter what..

This is the problem of Nigeria and will continue to be for a long time.
I never told him not too study medicine. I told him to reconsider it because Medicine is expensive. Did you not read his story? He will Train himself. That is not even the issue sef. You fail to comprehend and that is our biggest problem in Nigeria.
You could get angry with my post but I am being Logical here. Did you ask him the field he will like to do? Alternatives, Pros and cons?
You are definitely older than me but you don't sound like it.

Your post suggested so.

Why ask him to reconsider since it's obvious He's bent on Med? Your argument was based on the number of years spent studying medicine not the cost Baba.

But then, what's the difference between studying medicine or any of the other courses you listed costwise?

The only thing that made medicine expensive in Nigeria is textbooks but soft copy has made it easier
The real challenge for him is time needed to achieve his dream because of duration of medicine and ASUU strike

You didn't read his story? He has siblings to take care of and he has parents. Except he has someone sponsoring, ask yourself this question. Will medicine really give him time to work and help his family? Does he have any income substantial anywhere? This is all you should ask. You did Economics naw.

I was trying to give alternatives like Nursing since there are professional nurses which specifically specialise like stroke medicine. There's one currently handling a woman in the Church. He comes from time to time.
There's is Dentistry and there is oral pathology since there are some neurological manifestations which can be discovered on time and corrected by Dentists or referred for further corrections. There is Oral and maxillofacial surgery which can correct some facial deformities caused by stroke.
There's Masters in Diagnostic Radiography which can Help detect early signs of stroke and correct it.
I respect medicine and I don't like it if disagreeing with some people on this platform means I hate it

I'm telling u but I must confess the guy is very knowledgeable considering his age and present educational exposure, he is yet to gain admission but knows what is happening even up to area of specialisation in medical fields..and in like 80% of cases he is right.
Op, I understand your drive and the reason y u want to study medicine and trusy me that drive is all u need to scale through medscul..but on a lighter note, and like what zeeknow opined, medicine never ends, as a matter of fact, u are just starting after your mbbs decree except u want to be a general practisioner..to b candid with u its goin to b a very long and stressful ride filled with probabilities and tension and at a point, u gonna regret doin it considering your age presently..I understand that u wanna help d sick, but doctors are not the only ones that help d sick..in nursing, pharmacy, radiography, after your first decree, your carrier kick start, but in medicine u get to spend another long years and stress in a residency again; a pathway that will enable u specialize ..these are just some of the things u shud consider if u haven't.. but if u have considered everything, the pros and cons of starting med at ur age and some of the sacrifices u will make( there is a diary written by one TONYE001 guy, pls go through it) then its a good one, and like another poster aptly said, past question, past question, past question.. the need to study past question cannot b overemphasized.. u can take 30 minut to study just 1 question, read it, refer to ur texts, analyse d question again, identify the catch in d question, digest the topic from which d question was asked, look for other similar qiestions from differnt years and solve dem ..

Though quite relative in terms of school fees. We are talking about the one that affords him time. Dentistry student are somewhat relative to Medical student in terms of work load or even more but you can't compare how they drop students. Medicine drop students more than Dental students and it's no news.
According to him he sounds like someone who support his siblings except he didn't write his issues properly.
Even if he struggles and enters. We have not even talked about him entering medicine. He is a JAMB aspirant not even DE. JAMB is yet to give instructions on this year's exam.
Many of our bosses here on Nairaland who studied Medicine or are studying it have finished their degrees in Basic medical sciences before getting into Medicine through DE. I urge him to go through DE if at all he wants Medicine.

I actually understand and concur with what you are saying but to be honest what you have been posting are quite discouraging, though it might not be your intention.you have just indirectly told the guy that he cannot study medicine because of his challenges....a post like that calls for someone to encouraging and advice him and not give him more reasons why he can't study medicine.

I don't intend discouraging him but you have tell him the fact. He hasn't replied if he has sponsors, sponsoring himself or not even working currently. 2018 I got 300,2019 I got 275 and last year was 285 . I missed it by less than 2points and let me tell you Bro I was an indigene. I was told to pay Although I won't say the amount before I was given Pharmacology.
He has not told us if he did a science course so we encourage him go for DE.

I am a student of UniPort, I'll advice that if you do not have a strong O level result, don't choose UniPort, UniPort can not be predicted. Take for instance, UniPort will be admitting based on screening method this year using Just UTME score and O level result, thereby making potential best students with normal average result to be at the loosing end. Meanwhile when I got admitted in 2019, our admission were based on both UTME and POST UTME scores... and I believe you can't afford to take risk that the probability of you not being favoured is high at this stage.

On the other hand, UNN is also a school I wouldn't wanna advice you to choose, considering your age, it won't be nice you enter medical school and start passing through academic trauma which could lead to eventual dropout thereby wasting more of one's time. Cos it's in the culture of UNN to admit in excess and later send them packing by setting questions that will make students fail in a bid to meet up with MDCN quota of Medical Doctors to be produced. Therefore, I'd advice that you take your time, no need to rush, draw out your plans and look for schools where the odds are likely to favour you, Federal universities in particular, bkos of finance, also not necessarily one of these most sought after universities, but a Federal University with NUC and MDCN accreditation and maybe with an encouraging admission quota. Check admission thread of various schools here on nairaland and take your time to read the comments session, people's reactions and so on. That was what I also did when planning to choose school.

I wish you the very best bro in your chosen career, God will see you to and help you to achieve your goals.

What zeek said is not out of place at all.
He only showed the guy the reality on ground.

In my post,I listed everything that could be a problem. The main ones being ASUU strike and finances. He however cleared the air about the finances but was still afraid of ASUU strike.

That being said;

I have two(2) options for you, @Mitochondria96.
1. If you have no skill/handiwork/anything that could provide some financial relief here and there while studying;
Please apply for other medical courses like Nursing,Pharmacy,MLS, Radiography and Physiotherapy.
Why?
-Because you would have more opportunities/time to develop/Learn some skills. You don't want to be a 30 years old STUDENT ONLY, do you?
-They are less demanding than Dentistry/Medicine.
-You would still get to save lives which is the driving force behind your choice.

2. If you have skill/handwork that could fetch you some financial relief while studying, PLEASE GO FOR MEDICINE!

Critically analyse everything. The more we get older, the more it becomes very necessary to make informed decision. Because there might be no opportunity/time to correct mistakes.

I never said what zeek wrote was wrong...I actually said I understand where he is coming from and i supported him. What I said was that the guy did not come to this thread to have more reasons why he shouldn't study medicine....other people gave him good and positive advises which I saw as a means of encouragement....I agree that zeek actually speaks the truth and that's what I like about him even though others do not agree....if I was in the guys shoes and I was certain that I wanted to study medicine then I wouldn't have been happy about zeek's posts

Alright.

I love medicine and I don't like it if disagreeing with some people on this platform means I hate it

I heard of the recent massive rates of registration for the PLAB exam and I'm a little worried that by the time I'm done with medical school ( should be more than a year from now ) and finish my house job, there won't be any more space or opportunity to write the exam and move to the UK. Is this worry valid ? If yes , what other developed countries are relatively easy to get into as a Nigerian doctor? I know I'm supposed to be concerned solely on school but it has always been the dream to practice abroad hence the concern.

You talk very naive and like an amateur.
Like you rightly said, you are very young. You have no experience nor in any position to actually reply the young man that needed words of encouragement.
Let's be guided and avoid ITK.
And lastly put some respect on dentistry.

If You can rightly tell me what I said is wrong tell me? constructive Criticism is what I learned from this thread. I can outrightly tell you that you're a baby a big one. Being young does not mean you must be ignorant and this is why we have wrong Leaders in Nigeria. Incase you don't know being old in doesn't mean you will be smart. Remember Ignorant people grow old too.
I have been in Nairaland just one year and boy you don't know what I have learnt. I have been able to acquire new skills, attend workshop, read Journals and communicated with Lecturers, Doctors on Nairaland with more than two decades experience. So when I am talking, I am not talking in unsubstantiated claims but facts.
Some of you think I hate medicine?grin. Infact I respect them. I am worried.
You think I am happy when I see Doctors strike for unpaid salaries and dilapidated structures?
When I know we have less than hundred thousand registered Doctors in Nigeria with a population of over 150 million people and over half of those people registered are out of Nigeria, retired or not practising.
Where we have people roaming mad in the street and we have less than a thousand registered Psychiatrist to handle the cases and I shouldn't be worried?
Grow up Bro you are better than these. I can bet myballs you are not med school and even if you are probably 200 level. Your anger shows it. So much enthusiasm you have which I like but mind how you do then learn to read with an open mind.
