Modern Nigerians are simply breeding spoilt children.

Before you take offense, everyone claims they want their children to have a better life than they did. Some don't even cane their children anymore. You began switching on the TV, because you felt it was posh to do so, so you know exactly how to stop it. Stop it the way you started it.

This is how children watch too much TV, eat too much sugar, run around aimlessly too much, don't greet their elders in a society that thrives on such norms, don't clean up after themselves because there are so many house maids, don't have basic manners because they are being brought up to stand up for themselves and they don't want them to have "low self esteem". All those are simply social experiments on parenting that will go wrong. You are not pampering a child by allowing it excesses, or teaching it to become a strong kid (baby goat) by feeling it shouldn't greet people if it doesn't want to (who wants to?), you are simply spoiling it for the future society. Some will come out to tell you how they enjoyed growing up without rules and claim to be well balanced, but they won't tell you the losses they have in other aspects of their lives.

You are supposed to be a parent, not a friend or slave. No child will appreciate when you are to have guided them and didn't because you were too busy trying to play friendship with them.

Even the colonials caned their children, deprived then of TV, and they didn't become a terrible society because of that. It's too much relaxation in parenting that makes society evil.

The sort of relaxation modern Nigerian parents want.
Your kids will never be like white kids, no matter how posh it seems to you, because you have completely different values.

You have to take away TV time for at least 30 days. By then, the appetite for TV would have abated .

You must be a GATEKEEPER until he grows to choose for himself.

Somebody you should give his size and ground him from watching TV for weeks, you're here sounding defeated. If you cant control him now, I wonder when hes now a teenager what you'll do.

Turn on the tv station you want to watch. If he starts to react, give him a Stern look and if he doesn't behave, get the cane and whip his ass real hard. Yes hard because he seems to have grown tougher than you. So you need to break him down. I know you'll think I want you to kill your child. No! Just a strict dicipline to reset his brain otherwise, like you said, it will affect his academic performance and once that happens at the foundational stage, you might never get it right again.

In my years of experience as a teacher, I've observed that the slow leaners are the ones who are always glued to the TV. During class sessions, they won't respond but during break period you need to see them downloading all they saw in the cartoon movie with demonstrations too and you'll be like so this child can be this active and expressive... Only in the wrong things and not in their studies. Im talking about up to basic 5 level.

Yesterday, some of my basic 5 students were like, "miss J, this question is too difficult" during exams. And I was like, move to the next question then. And these are very cheap questions I set out of pity. If they studied instead of watching cartoons, they probably will not have difficulty answering those questions.

What I'm trying to bring out here is.. children naturally dont want to do the right thing any longer and if you allow them, you'll be the one to bear the brunt in the end.

Ma, Dont allow anyone to mislead you here. I am a father also and my Son is also 3 Years + Old. Just ensure that it does not affect his studies and Learning. Beating a child always will not help you rather it make the child more stone hearted as he grows up and worst still it may push Him/Her from you as the parent.

Children need a routine..and it is the routine you create for them that they fall into. You gave your son the allowance to watch cartoons nonstop without regulating it.

I have a 3yr old too. No matter what she's watching, once it's bedtime, every other thing is suspended. She has a time to bath and go to bed. It has git to the point that if I don't bath her at that time, she starts reminding me because her body is already used to it.

It might ot be too late to create a routine for him. You are the one in charge, not him.

*Set a specific time daily as 'Screen Time', for maximum of 2 hours.

*Get educational toys - building blocks, puzzles (appropriate for his age), plastacine clay. Join him to build different things ranging from alphabets, numbers, cars, houses, animals. Creativity is key.

*Get pictorial story books. Read to him about 3 times a day and at bedtime. For him, bedtime should be around 8pm.

*Get crayons and plain sheets. Let him draw and paint. Of course it will be very rough but it will help him develop his wrist muscles.

*Academic writings too. At his age, he should try to write some numbers and letters. Daily writings help him perfect them.

*Take him to a park to play ball or play around the compound safely. Different ball games would suffice. It will help him build gross motor skills.

*Be firm. He would cry but will adjust later. Crying could be a form of control from a child to the parents.

*Most importantly, ask God for wisdom on how to handle your child.

Once you stop subscription his attention will move to other things

Get a nursery rhymes video and songs, play the video disc let him listen to it if you don't know how to handle a toddler like that, then you need to be taught on how to be a parent because the tougher one is when they get to teenagehood

This is nothing but indulgence. He's a 3 year old. All of you in the house will pay for his rehab. And it is simple, stop watching TV from 7 or 8pm. Will he cry? Yes. Is he going to die? NO. Do that for 1 week and observe how all of you in the house will get better. My toddlers go to their room by 8pm. There's no TV there except their cartoon books.

Get his father involved, my daughter of 3plus is doing the same thing. Is either she is watching PJ mask, Janjanto what ever or lion guards and just like your son, she doesn't want anyone to watch other programs except hers but recently the game has changed, I have to let her know that other people have need to watch their programs interest too. Also when it's time for her to sleep, I switch off the TV irrespective of her crying. After a whole week of doing that, she has learnt to adjust.
And don't waste to flog him if need be, this is naija not America

You can reduce the hours he watches television. Also buy more toys he can play with.Building block helps a child in developing their thinking ability..

He will grow up to be intelligent and attentive

are you a passive parent? your son is at a age when they are able to negotiate what they want with some ruthless tactics, but most parents just see them as children throwing tantrums. I advise you begin to be more assertive with him and let him see certain favours as benefit of obedience.

Switch to Cbeebies or something similar... You can get online...
Your son needs a combination of cartoons and real people doing everyday stuff.

Mr Tumble, Bing (cartoon but educational and not all superpower and fighting bad guys trying to mess your day.

In in Nja, then he needs to get out more and do sports, walking, climbing, throwing stones, chasing animals - stuff to tire him out so less need to TV...

Look for intelligent cartoons like cocomelon, Dr Binocs , Operation ouch, storybots etc, just be mixing them with his favourite PJ Mask and by the time he watched them he will begin to have a change of mind. All these are on YouTube, you can download them.
