Got my passport back today with my visa on it cheesy .
My visa was approved on Wednesday 13th January.

Exactly two months ago, I was denied at Lagos consulate with a different school. Here is my profile and interview for the first attempt :

University of South Carolina.
Funding : in state tuition + $250 per semester.
Deficit : 33k.
Course : Computer Science Msc
Status : Denied

November 13th 2020.
The VO on window 12 seemed calm and was taking time to ask questions, I really wanted to be interviewed by him because I was confident.
He was just finishing with the last person and I was getting ready to meet him when another vo came in the other window. This vo looked like he didn't have time sef and the security directed me to him.

Me : good morning
Vo : *collects my documents and scans my fingers. He then looks at my i-20 for a while *
How many schools did you apply to?

Me : (I was wondering why he asked this first) I applied to 5 schools in total

Vo : how many gave you admission?

Me : 3 of them, gsu, wsu and u of South Carolina

Vo : so why did you choose usc

Me : I chose university of South Carolina mainly because of the courses I will be taking. I will be taking startup in computing, they were the only school that I saw from my Search offering it and the knowledge I get from it will be very essential to my mobile application development startup here when I come back, I will also be taking mobile application development, I like their mobile application development class because we will be using a software called Cordova which I have always wanted to learn for mobile development, I was also awarded a graduate fellowship, which gives me resident tuition and 250 dollars per semester.

Vo : so who will be sponsoring you?

Me : my mum

Vo : what does your mum do?

Me : she's a judge in a high court

Vo : a judge

Me : yes

Vo : okay has your mum ever been to the US?

Me : no

Vo : how many siblings do you have?

Me : 4 siblings

Vo : are they all younger than you?

Me : I have a senior brother and all the other siblings are younger.

Vo : okay, your senior brother, what does he do?

Me : he imports and sells clothing materials

Vo : he imports and sells clothing materials?

Me : yes

Vo *types for a while and puts my i-20 back into my passport then pulls out the yellow paper *
They say when you get approved, you go deaf and I think this also happens when you are refused. My heart sank and I went deaf immediately he put my i-20 back into my passport. I don't even remember if he made the usual refusal speech or not but he must have since they make a speech for everyone both approved or denied. I do not even remember how I collected my documents back. The next thing I remember after that was walking out and getting sympathizing glances from those still standing in line. And in my mind, I was like 'Stop feeling sorry for me and focus on your own interviews' lol.

Later on, some people looked at my transcript and pointed out that the problem was the 'importing' and that some VOs do not like to hear that & someone else also told me that they seem to have a thing against civil servants sponsoring you.

I paid another visa fee and began looking out for dates but was not seeing any. I applied for emergency appointment and was refused(because I have been denied recently) after more than a week of tough waiting. By that time it was almost christmas and my start date was 5th January. Luckily for me, I had admission to Wichita state uni and they were resuming 26th January. So when I saw 13th January available in Abuja, I grabbed the date and transferred my SEVIS from USC to WSU.

Honestly I was not optimistic for my 2nd interview. I had already browsed out 8 schools that I wanted to apply to for Fall & even called my lecturers to wish them happy new year cos I was expecting to disturb them for recommendation letters soon.

2nd Attempt, Abuja embassy.
Wichita state university, Computer Science masters (no funding, 26k deficit).
13th January 2021.
Status : Approved.

As I entered the hall for interview and sat down. A young white male vo was asking the guy he was interviewing about the family sponsor listed on his i-20 and the guy said it was his uncle and that his uncle had been taking care of his studies. The vo denied him after this (I later met the guy outside and he said his uncle has a different surname and his deficit was 24k. That was probably why he was denied). Shortly after, he beckoned to me.

The vo was nice and cool.

Me : Good morning *passes my documents *

vo : Good morning * types for some seconds and takes my finger prints* What is your purpose to the US?

Me : To study at Wichita state university

vo : What are you going to study?

Me : Computer Science

vo : I can see on your i-20, sponsor is family funds, who will be sponsoring you?

Me : My mum will sponsor me

vo : What does she do?

Me : She is a judge at xxxxx

vo : A judge?

Me : Yes sir. (because of how my last interview went, I immediately added) "I have her account statement here, if you would like to see it?"

vo : Oh yes, of course. I will definitely see the account statement. I will see it (he said this enthusiastically as if it was his favorite part of the job. grin Lol)

He typed for about 30 seconds and asks for it. So I pass it to him.

Me : The first one is her savings account and the second one is her salary account.

vo : okay

He enters something from the first statement to his computer, probably converting to dollars. He didn't really look at the second one

vo : So what will this program do for you?

Me : Sir, I have a mobile and web development startup here. My program at wsu is focused on mobile and web development, so the knowledge I get from my program will be useful to me as I come back to expand my startup and launch the applications and websites that I want to launch

vo : okay

Then he takes out a white paper, joins it with my other documents and started saying something. I always said I will hear this part but I was too busy asking myself if I had just been approved. I did not expect the interview to be this short (about 3 mins). I collected the documents and glanced at the white paper, it contained info about passport retrieval. The vo was still saying something and was talking really fast. I only heard the last thing he said which was 'Enjoy your studies'.

Me : Thank you

vo : You're welcome

Me : Have a nice day

vo : Thank you

And that was it!
Now to the next process of booking flight ✈ and sweet travel arrangements cheesy
I wish all of us success. A denial is only there to make your approval sweeter.

After you were denied the first time and your expedited appointment request denied, did you pay another VISA fee.
How does the whole process work.

You can request an emergency appointment once with a visa fee. But even if you are denied the request, you will still have ur regular appointment and you can still reschedule as usual

For pepper go to walmart and other stores and look for habanero pepper it is the pepper called ata rodo, Cameron pepper or scent pepper.
naijaeclectic:

You're right oh! I was so sorry for myself when I arrived with an Infinix phone and three-mouth charger. I finally had to get a new phone and a new SIM + two-mouth adapter thingy.

Thanks for the great advice. I have one last addition: if you like pepper, please just buy loads of pepper, and save it in a Ziplock bag. If not, you will have to look for "effective" pepper.

I wish everyone arriving soon a safe trip!

Visa Approved

Fri, Jan 15. 8:00 am

Me: Good Morning

VO: Can I have your I-20 and passport, please?

Me: (Hands over required documents)

VO: Why are you going to the US

Me: To pursue a Masters degree in Information science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock

VO: (Takes a look at my I-20). I see you have an assistantship, what will you be doing during your assistantship?

Me: I will be working as a Software Developer under the dept, on a social media analytics tool as part of a project called COSMOS

VO: Is the funding for a semester or the entire program?

Me: It's full funding that covers my tuition and offers monthly stipends to the tune of Bleep amount(Me trying to play safe as the assistantship offer is renewed every semester based on performance. It can actually be terminated, just like a regular job offer, cos that's what it is)

VO: (Nods head in unison)Why are you taking this course?

Me: I'm taking this course from a problem-solving perspective, from my years of experience working as a Product Manager, I have spotted a data problem in diverse sectors in Nigeria, finance, governance etc. I intend to use the skills and knowledge gained from this course to build a solution around this(I probably mentioned some examples like credit rating and insurance but let's keep it short)

VO: Are you married?

Me: No

VO: Have you traveled outside of Nigeria?

Me: No

VO: You don't have any problems, I will be approving your VISA. Take your(inaudible)

Summary: It seemed like a good day at the Embassy, I'm not particularly sure if people got approved or denied as I wasn't paying too much attention. But the VO seemed nice, and from the tone I was hearing over the speakers, they all sounded friendly enough to approve VISAs.

Thanks to everyone that shared their transcripts, God bless you.

Good evening house. Please I have interest in doing my masters in Electrical Engineering in the US. I have a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a CGPA of 4.32/5, finished in 2016.
Please gurus in the house, what are my chances of securing funding with this profile if I do well in my GRE? And what are the schools that are more likely to offer funding in this Electrical?

Hi guys, thanks for the information shared on this thread. I have a question to ask.when a school offers you full tuition waiver and graduate assistantship; do you need to provide proof of funds for your visa application?

If you have it with you it is better you go with it, if it is going to be asked it depends on the VO, it doesn’t mean they always demand for it but just make sure you have it and make sure your funding is stated on your I-20.

If not Samsung, LG, Nokia or IPhone, It’s not supported. Better to buy one in Nigeria if you not willing to buy in the US...

Buy those nice looking jacket in Nigeria before coming. They are fucking expensive here especially for a naira-oriented fellow.

If you don’t want to go eat some Taco Bell, check Fil-A or some Chinese food in your first few months, better you drop some clothes and load some food stuff instead.

Fish!! Fish!! Fish!!! Dry ofcourse might be helpful since you will be eating more of Walmart’s turkey and chicken as you integrate into the system.
Ofcourse there are African Resturants but my fellow Nigerians , that poundo yam cost like 25dollars and the cray fish cost even more. So you get some idea of what to load??

There is Garri ijebu also, even Nigerian indomie but you know what that means?? Some more dollars to spend. You don’t want to spend your first few months calculating dollar to naira(it’s now even more expensive).

Charger! Charger!! Get an adaptor with 2 mouth socket. Your laptop, your phone that comes with 3 mouth plug can be converted in Nigeria with just 500 naira. It can cost you up to 30dollars in the US. Are you calculating that now? If yes, then save yourself of that calculation when you get here...

Connect! connect!! Connect!!! You need a place to stay for the first few months and someone to drive you to class. It’s so cold out there. Well, you can win that. I also walked to school everyday in January(spring semester).

Lastly, bring forth your brain, that’s the only way to survive. The land of opportunities offers it to not only the hard worker but to the intelligent workers. Intelligence often does not translate to Sabi Book. So man let’s hip this and grab those opportunities together...

What of Redmi please?

White V.O

Noticed from transcripts posted on here that the white V.O usually comes early and the black V.O starts later, so I decided to go very early even though my appointment was 8:15. I got there by 6:20 but the interview started few minutes to 9.

Me: Good morning
V.O: Good morning

Me: Before we start, I'd like to say that I'm very nervous and when I'm nervous, my talking is fast and distorted so if you don't hear what I'm saying just tell me to repeat it.
V.O: Don't worry, no reason to be nervous. So why are you going to the United States.

Me: I would be going to continue by undergraduate degree in biology at Edward Waters college in Florida. I started taking classes for the fall semester in Nigeria because of the pandemic and ended with a 4.0 GPA, I have my result with me.
V.O: wow, 4.0, that's great. (Then, Takes a look at my I-20), oh I can see you have a full ride, that's great.

V.O: (looks at me and sees that I'm kind of nervous) no need to be nervous.

V.O: so what will this degree do for you?
Me: I love biology, it's like my favourite subject in high school but most importantly I plan to pursue a career in biomedical research and biology would be a great foundational course for me. Also, this degree would enable me work at the Centre for excellence in reproductive health initiative where my uncle works.

V.O: Good, so where is this place you say your uncle works? Lagos or Abuja?
Me: Benin.

V.O: I intended to issue you your visa, this form contains information on how to pick your passport.

I'm really very happy and I thank everyone on NL. I started this journey in 2018 and I'm glad that God has crowned it with success. I paid MRV four times between November and now. Thankfully all the money I've used since I got admitted from SEVIS to MRV four times to samsung tablet, data and feeding while I was taking online class were external scholarships I got while taking classes this fall. Nothing is too much for God to do at all.

I have been looking out for your transcript.
Congratulations Friedpotato!

Congratulations dear. Wichita state university is the school i applied to. I emailed you

Moderators, please let me know if I'm going against the rules and I'll delete this post. For now, here goes nothing:

So, I encountered loads of difficulties when I was leaving Nigeria. With the limits on Nigerian bank cards, I and the guy attending the same school (Miami University, Oxford, Ohio) could not pay for many things, even within that $50/$100 CBN-imposed limit. We spent days trying to pay for a hotel/Airbnb, GreyHound services, and whatnot. I've not been that stressed in years.

Let me not even go into how AirBnB canceled a booking when we were at the airport, an hour to getting on our flight. Why did they do that? Our booking was tagged as fraudulent. So, the booking came from Nigeria and payment from a virtual card with a US address. Also, because Airbnb refused to verify our Nigerian phone numbers for reasons known to them, we used one belonging to a friend in the UK. It was extremely complicated, and we'd tried all we knew, but that's the only option we had before we found someone who helped at the last minute. Let's just say that we ended up rooming in a hotel (read: motel) in a Nigerian-like neighborhood in New York. grin

Lol. Don't ask why the UK friend didn't just pay and do everything from his end. As I said, things were super-complicated.

The thing is that things could have been easier if someone helped facilitate everyone from one spot, with one card.

Based on this experience (and several more), I would like to help anyone who needs to pay for buses, accommodation, semester dues, and anything that they can't do from Nigeria. I've seen people who can't access US websites, people whose cards are not working, and people who are faced with using a third-party offering ridiculous over-N515 (naira) exchange rates.

I understand that everyone's being careful and that you don't want to get scammed. But I am genuinely doing this because I can imagine the kind of stress people are going through right now.

Please send a message if you would like me to help. When you reach out, I can share details about myself, and you can Google me, too, for credibility purposes.

At this point, the stress in the world (read: Nigeria) is too much to add difficulties when japa-ing.

I sincerely hope this helps someone. Again: Moderators, if this is way off, please let me know and I'll delete this.

Thank you.

Visa Approved
Undergraduate
Funding: Full ride
Graduated high school 2013
Second attempt.
Abuja Embassy

Congratulations man. I know your story a bit and I am glad that it has ended in success. And for those of us still hoping and dreaming, may God show up on our case. Amen.

People that traveled recently(within the last week), did the Nigerian authorities strictly request for a COVID-19 test result? My airline doesn't require it and I don't want to waste 50K to do it.

6 years ago is a long time. Is this admission for first degree or masters and up?

If its masters and above, it should be ok as long as you can explain what you been doing all these years
