I can confidently say that the guy that tops my class back then doesn't have a job at the moment . After NYSC in 2009, he got a job in one of the telecoms orgs and we weren't surprised cos we believe he deserves it. He lost the job about three years later and since then he hasn't gotten any suitable one. Na close pals they assist him sometyms sef.

I guess he's tired of searching for jobs.

10 yrs ago back then in Sec. School days i was among the best 4 over all not doing bad anyway but am still struggling with life meanwhile those we see as average lots of them are married nd also working in a high paying companies while some are in the Overseas with their family

Without grades (quantitative measures) how do you asess your child's performance or better still improvement in academics?. How do you differentiate between potential investment options(ROI) ? Potential employers ? Even goods to buy?(i.e. pricing)

I would even make a stretch to say that in choosing a spouse, (amongst potential suitors) we subconsciously grade each and choose the highest ranking suitor — using our arbitrary albeit personal score points.

Without quantitative measures AKA grading there's no way to decide students for admittance into the universities since not all applicants can be admitted.

Grades, while not being perfect, helps to reduce the lies we could all tell ourselves about performance.

I topped my class and I am doing fairly OK. Although ,there are many of my classmates with lesser class of degree that are doing better than I. Eg. I have a friend that got a third-class but got a job in Chevron(Probably Know-person assisted thang). Even those with 2-2 ,working with the FG are now big Boyz/ladies ,travelling anyhow when necessary and conveniently . Everything na GOD!

Shortly after she graduated (I studied a 5 year course, so she left me before me) she told me she was getting married to some young politician in our home state and would like me to be on her bridal train. She hadn't even done youth service it was that period of awaiting service.

Given her outstanding academic record and age at the time, I felt she was making a mistake by opting for marriage so soon. She's the sort of high performer the likes of KPMG and PWC would have snatched up ASAP.

Today, I hear she is divorced with 5 kids. When I think of her and our days in Uni, I feel like a bright and shinning star was cut short in her prime and didn't shine so brightly to its full potential or for most of the world to see.

Seems most of the dull students think they are wiser because they got lucky. For one successful dull student, there are a million others wallowing in untold poverty. Support, parental wealth, family connections, and plain old opportunity and time, etc, contribute to overall individual success.

That intellectual measure in school is still useful to them in real life. The intelligent ones will still be able to work their way around intelligently, the dull ones will get along, but not finding the best solutions yet able to make money.

I never topped a class apart from my primary 5, I read outside the scheme topics that i find absorbing but it put me behind in position. In the end it paid off, i did better externally,I got admitted before the toppers,became an engineer,and got employed. In life generally our emotional intelligence ,persistence and grace leads the way to success than IQ and skill. Cheers.
