I got a foreign used toyota corolla 2003/2004 July last year, I only did normal engine service without any changes to the transmission. July this I discover that the ATF is a bit short so my mecho told me to buy Mobil 1litre ATF to top up after wich gear is still working fine but I want to ask gurus in the house at what interval does changing of ATF necesaary or based on my explanation above do I need to change/service the gear asap?

I will appreciate urgent response

If ATF is still pinkish/redish, don't change it yet.

Please i need solution.
My lexus rx 350 2010 always show “transmission oil high temperature” if i drive in the high way in high speed within 30 to 50 minutes drive,i have replaced the radiator to double cell, changed the gear box oil with toyota WS severally, even attempted to add additional cooler yet nothing changed.
Apart from the warning on the dash board everything works 100% perfectly,at a point i decided to ignore it and wait for the day the gear box will go bad and i can replace it.
No check engine, the car have also been diagnosed and there is no fault code.
Re: Automatic Gearbox Problems by EngRichie: 6:50pm On Dec 08, 2020
This needs good diagnosis. Let me list few posible causes.

1. Over filled transmission
2. Under filled transmission
3. Intermitent transmission oil temperature sensor connection
4. Faulty torque converter lockup (this should produce a code though)
5. Depending on drive-train design, a fault in drive-train can cause stress to the transmission

Thank you for your reply,
I have done necessary diagnosis and yet no error. Code.
The car does not have any check engine code.
The transmission does not have any issue at all.

I’m in Aba,Abia state, can you recommend anyone that handle this situation?

Re: Automatic Gearbox Problems by Mrsoftwork(m): 8:36pm On Dec 10, 2020
Bosses, please which gearbox oil is good for Rav4 2002 model

cardoctor:
Automatic gearbox issues have become a reoccuring decimal to any automatic car owner. Slow take off, sluggish acceleration, lack of kick down, loss of drive while in motion, lack of gear change, aggressive gear changes, high engine revs without power in drive just to name a few.

From my observation and the complaints made by some of our customers, these problems usually start from a gearbox oil change that was recommended by the mechanic who then uses the wrong type of ATF oil for the transmission.

Most car manufacturers develop their own ATF formular for their cars.

Honda recommends their own formular ATF-z1 for their gearboxes manufactured between 1998 to 2009 and upgraded to the ATF-Dw1 for gearboxes manufactured from 2010 upwards.

Toyota uses the Type 4 ATF for their cars manufactured between1996 to 2007 and the Toyota WS ATF for ones manufactured between 2007 to present.

Most other car manufactures have also upgraded the type of ATF for their modern cars.

Using the wrong grade of ATF would almost certainly result in a failing transmission. Low grade ATF may not be able to handle the high temperature operations operations of a gearbox. Under very high temperatures, low grade oil loses its fluidity and may begin to boil causing loss of hydraulic functions by frothing or foaming.

Some remedies I have seen used by local mechanics is to further add engine oil to the gearbox in order to thicken the viscosity of the ATF. This in turn puts the pump under great stress as the thicker oil would require more effort from the pump in distributing the oil under high pressure as well as the oil filter which is usually embedded within the transmission gear train. (The removal and changing of all Honda transmission oil filter would require the removal of the gear box from the car and stripping down the gearbox)

The resulting consequence would be an imminent and extreme overheating of the transmission and components such as the friction plates and a rapid degradation of the wet clutch fibres hence the loss of drive, slipping clutch and rough gear changes.

Replacing the gearbox or a total overhaul by an expert would be the likely solution but before then, an inexperienced mechanic would Send you on a wild goose chase by suggesting the removal and servicing or outright replacement of shift solenoids on the outer casing of the gearbox. These solutions Don't last as its just a temporal remedy to a terminal issue.

We constantly repair these gearboxes and those of other makes to a very high standard with 99.9% success rate and we recommend that if you are having serious issues with your automatic gearbox, ensure that the appropriate procedures are followed.

Was the former oil very dark?

Was filter serviced or replaced?

What car is this?

Some cars need transmission relearn. It is done manually in some cars and in some cars by following a particular driving pattern, it adjusts itself as you drive.

My first suspicion is transmission oil overfill.
Also, I don't know whether your car has separate transmission oil cooler or it is integrated with the radiator. If it is separate, check the coolant hoses or pipe that goes to the oil cooler to ensure that there is no restriction.
There are things that make transmissions to overheat.

Thank you for your suggestion, I called gazzuzz and he gave a solution and i will try it out today.
The transmission does not come with a separate cooler and the oil gauge is normal.
I will install a separate cooler today as advised,i also noticed that another owners of this same 2010 lexus rx have same issue.

After my corolla sport, 06, was robbed of its brainbox and some other parts, I replaced all stolen parts and drove it for about 3 weeks without any complaints.

But recently, I started having issue with the gear selection.

When on reverse, it makes some hissing sound and when you change gear, it jacks - - even when it changes gear on the motion.

I was thinking it was the brainbox, but when I checked with a rewire and he ran a test on the car with a tool, the error was not brainbox.

We got Pressure Control Solenoid ‘D’ Electrical error.

He suggested that we service the gear - changed filter and buy new oil.

But despite this, the problem still persists.

I consulted a gear mechanic, he said the problem is fibre.

I am confused. Is it that solenoid is also fibre or the problems are different?

Please advice! Car gurus and car doctor

I shouldve seen this thread before changing my gear oil.

I found out my gear oil was leaking so I went to my mechanic who replaced the seal and filled it up with another oil.

The gear when put on D drive won't move but will move when on R reverse.

Now I've just towed the vehicle Sienna 2005 model to my house.

Any help here please?

Kashif, Gazzuzz, Makavele and other car gurus please I need your help.

Please I'm having this same problem with my Toyota Sienna 2005. How did you fix yours. I'm really down because I don't know what to do again

Hi cardoctor,
I drive a Honda Ridgeline 06, sometime last year my mech topped my gear oil with holt transmission fluid and the car started to jerk, immediately I complained and was advised to flush the gear with Honda transmission fluid and the problem stopped only to start again after few months. Now it jerks in 1st gear and I noticed the engine was very hot whenever I'm not on Ac. Took it to oyingbo and was advised to change gear after servicing the gear switches. The rest of the transmission exchanges fine except the 1st and the very hot heat that emanates. What can I do pls. Cheers
