Tranquility4u: People should learn to approach issuees objectively even when religion is involved. 1. Mission schools by their very definition are schools created for community service to bring people into the Christian fold. Their modus operandi is clear and exists even before independence. For MURIC to try to ascribe anything "colonial" to them is simply dishonest propaganda. 2. Around 1974 the Kwara State Government forcefully took over the mission schools under the pretext of "grant-aiding" them. Those who made that move are the creators of the current problem. Some of these mission schools were built inside their parent Church compounds. Trying to make them public schools where mosques would be required for Muslims to worship is bound to create tension and conflict that was easily avoidable. Government is already stretched to the limit even in maintaining ordinary public schools, most of which lack good classrooms and amenities, much less adding mission schools to the fold. The best solution for the long term is to return the schools to the missions and move students that can't continue to proper Public Schools. There is no way Government can mediate in the issue without being seen to favour one religion or the other. Government always go beyond itself in meddling where it is not needed. In a secular State, Government has no business with religion; no business setting up Pilgrims Boards or sponsoring pilgrimages by any religion! And it is wrong for people to make it look like Nigeria is a two-religion State. And for the insincere MURIC, if Wike declared Rivers as a Christian State, how many years earlier have some other Governors declared Zamfara and Kano States as Muslim State by virtue of introduction of Sharia? Those Governors were not violating the constitution also? 2 Likes |

RisenPhoenix1: The girls, their parents and the mumuric....they could have simply gone to other schools where their religious obligations are accepted. Is that simple for you for to understand? Is St. Michaels Secondary school a muslim school to you? Chai na wah oh. How will I go to Ansarudeen Secondary or islamiyyat secondary school and be complaining of not being allowed to practice my religious faith other than theirs....there is no rational behind that. Why on Earth will I complain tell me.... 2 Likes |

Every school has a school uniform, and you can't just wear whatever you like. If you're a Muslim and must wear the Hijab, attend a school that allows Hijab as part of the optional uniform. 1 Like |

bareal: Just because they retained their names does not mean that they are missionary owned today; whether Christian, Muslim or pagan. As long as they are on government land and sponsored fully by tax payers' money, they belong to everybody. We live in a secular country where everybody is entitled to practise their faith, or lack thereof. Nobody should be forced to abandon their faith or practise another's before having access to a public institution funded by the government. It is really very easy to understand. If the government changed all school names to numbers, would that reduce your confusion? |

That's always the problem of Muslims and this mumuric man; hypocrisy. You want to send your child to a Christian schoo but don't want to obey the Christian rules and regulations but in your Islamic schools, everybody obeys your wicked and devilish Islamic rules. What is really wrong with these Muslim terrorists? 1 Like |

Cantonese: The so-called rule does not make sense, is unconstitutional and apparently has no practical application, except to sideline Muslims. If Muslims state that it is a part of their faith, then withholding this right from them for no logical reason is only an attempt to control their behaviour. As long as said behaviour is not harmful to you or anyone else, you have no right to control it, under any constitutional law. If you can provide a logical or scientific reason as to why you think a Muslim girl wearing her headscarf in school is harmful; out with it, otherwise, stop fishing for foolish justifications. "It's the rule" is not a justification. It's a cop out. If the rule did not favour you, you would be the first to decry it. As for the takeover, part of the reason for the takeover was to eliminate the religious bigotry and divisiveness that missionary schools were trying to engender in the host communities. You call for a perpetuation of the bigotry with one breath while you support it with another. The best way to eliminate bigotry is to let Christians wear what they want and let Muslims wear what they want. If no one is forced, no one will feel sidelined. If it's the "rule" to make someone feel sidelined, then the rule should be done away with. This is why we Africans are ever on the march backwards. I swear, I am beginning to understand why Muslims get so angry sometimes. |

MansoryMX: There’s no use arguing with a fool. He only rages and scoffs, and tempers flare. The godly pray for those who long to kill them. A rebel shouts in anger; a wise man holds his temper in and cools it. Proverbs 29: 9-11. @ the bolded. Recognize your raging and scoffing here? How Christian of you. AntiChristian:Who bought the land for the schools? Who built the buildings of the schools? Who named the schools? What was the agreement between the government and the proprietors of the school? Documents signed showed that it was a Grant-Aid and NOT a takeover. Now, you wish to deprive them of their foundermental human right of association. Every association has binding rules according to the aims and objectives of the association. 1 Like 1 Share |

RisenPhoenix1: You miss the point. “The reason for takeover was to eliminate religious bigotry”. Where did you get that from? Who ever said that to you? For me it was not. It was an attempt to muzzle in the Christian schools, which had far a larger share of the sector, especially in Lagos. You may ask: why the missionary schools? There were too many private schools before the take over. The reason is that politics had come into play and politicians were playing the religious card. If you carefully look through my previous comment you”ll find where I said that I attended a Christian school, where Muslims also attended. We did not know the difference in our faith as we all attended morning assembly and sang hymns. When our Muslim friends had Islamic things we all joined happily. The same happened in Islamic schools. Everyone was happy. Your question must be “where did the idea to take over missionary owned schools come from? You”ll be surprised to find out that a lot of our Muslim leaders, especially of the south, attended Christian schools and vice versa. Lagos state many years ago had Jumratul Islamiyya, Muslim teachers training college, Gaskiyya Cardoso, etc. All those schools were attended by Christians. Infact in Gaskiyya Cardoso, all the girls dressed in hijabs and long gowns, all covered. It was a well known policy of the school. Christians who attended that school dressed in that manner happily. For selfish reasons, government took over and the rest became history. Freedom to associate is enshrined in our constitution, but that does not give you the liberty to oppress me, not especially in my own house. Why is it that it is only this Muric man who continuously whips up this religious sentiment? Have you ever heard of Barewa college? Do you know how many southern leaders who boast of attending that school? Does the school not have its own rules? Have you ever heard anyone complaining? Are there no Christians there? The Christians follow the rule and there is absolute peace. There are rules in place in northern Islamic schools and everyone adheres to them. “Stop fishing for foolish justifications”. No one tries to justify what is wrong. You are just being overly sentimental and not addressing the matter realistically. This problem continues to linger in the south, especially the south west and must be addressed frontally. The country is divided along various lines and that is the honest truth that we must all face. The solution once again is for government to restore the seized schools to their respective owners, who should be allowed to practice their faith and teach their students according to their beliefs. 2 Likes 1 Share |

AntiChristian: Public schools with Christian or Muslim backing have tenets they wish to uphold. Before enrolling children there, parents should use their brains and know what they are getting into. I wonder why Christians in these places never seem to have this problem. Only Muslims in Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti etc. are always complaining about public schools like primary School and law school. Even the North doesn't have this issue. I attended school with Muslims who never wore the hijab right up till we left, since it was not an Islamic school. There was never a day of protests. They knew what they were getting into. Everyone was okay. Nowadays people are looking for how to be outraged over nothing. If you want religion, carry it to your religious school. Let public schools remain secular. You came for education, not to show holiness and religious dress code. |

You’re talking about constitutional right. Dumb isn’t it? Could a Rhoda or Elizabeth go to a public Islam school and sight constitutional reasons for refusing to wear hijab? As there exists Christian public schools also does Islamic private schools. Here in Ibadan for schools like Ansar u deen hijab has never been a problem because someone willing not to use hijab will never go. Please, why should Khodijah go to a missionary school just to question their fair tenets? 2 Likes |

Come to Ilorin and see churches in their thousands! There is no statistics to back the assertion up! BluntTheApostle:No sir! Intact the decline we have seen has been due to government occupation! Many Christians now send their children to the private mission schools as they are the best now in Ilorin. BluntTheApostle: It's just like saying that the rosary is just ordinary beads. Cantonese: If you like, explain from morning till night, religious bigots won't want to understand. I went to school with Muslims who never wore the hijab. They never protested not wearing it. We knew they fasted, celebrated with them, and it was never an issue. They knew they were in a secular school. Suddenly some people want to impose religious clothes and don't want to know if they are in religious schools or not. Why not attend a school of your religion and not a secular one, if you want to be religious? This is like the law school incident which raised furor for nothing. Even the president's daughter, a Muslim from northern Nigeria, wore a wig without the hijab. Yet one woman from this same Oyo or Ekiti made it an issue. We all wonder where she is today, if she has entered Paradise for her pointless stubbornness. An occasion of a few hours of wig wearing on only one day turned into real physical war in the country, whipping up useless aggression. It seems the rules were made for all of us, but some of us always feel they are more than those rules. Always looking for ways to claim they are sidelined, but will never talk about Saudi or hisbah. 2 Likes |
