My STRONG ADVICE TO ANYONE DOING SOLAR IN NIGERIA is get lithium batteries.

They are expensive, but sometimes you can find deals. Those are the kind of batteries in your phones and in electric vehicles. You are probably already aware of the long life of these batteries even after they go through so much abuse, especially low charge abuse.

Compare the battery in your phone, to say the battery in a rechargeable light or rechargeable fan. I'm sure you've all experienced the short life of these batteries. You charge and charge that rechargeable light and only get about 5 minutes useable energy from the battery in the form of a dim light after just a few months.

So if you are considering Solar, do strongly consider going lithium as your storage source.

If however, you are constrained by budget and have to get regular lead-acid batteries, especially the ones commonly found in the Nigerian market, then YOU MUST COME TO TERMS WITH THE REALITY OF YOUR PURCHASE. You must know that those batteries won't last that long, unless you absolutely pamper them, which few people would do. You would have to transfer most of your huge loads to the daytime, when there is incoming solar power and load shed while on these type of batteries.

Great move.

Less than what many Nigerians pay per month for electricity.

5 Million household is a lot of solar panels, how I wish there's a solar panel manufacturer in Nigeria to take advantage of this program.
Go and research before you comment. They government didn't specify the power of each unit. I can confidently tell you that 500k is not enough to power a two bedroom flat with Ac and other low consumption gadgets. What government will offer can only power few bulbs and fans

So what's the power output of a unit of the solar panel?

A solar panel just convert the solar energy, you need other associated accessories which might even be more expensive.

Besides, solar panels that can comfortably power an average home with 2 AC, Fridge, and few low power consuming equipment can't be less than 500k.

Yes, I said it.

Efficiency not up to 20%. It's purely business and nothing more.

If you're serious about anything in this country, don't wait for them. Go and get the panels yourself and other things needed.

Waste of precious intellectual.
The cost of Solar panels installation and maintenance is extremely costly, it will better be utilized in our Solar Automobile which will help us power our car directly with sunlight during the day and switch our car to Petrol during the night.

Solar should be the most expensive source of electricity

I beg to differ.

Solar energy is still evolving.

Some things fully materialize with time.

With more and more companies investing in solar research and technology, nothing is impossible.

Today, there are solar flowers and solar windows. Solar still arguments fossil fuel energy sources now, but I believe it will kick the latter out completely in the near future.

Meanwhile, I cannot praise this government yet on this project until I see the wattage of the solar systems.

I remember MTN and Luminous partnering to sell some nonsense to unsuspecting Nigerians. That was the biggest solar scam of this century. I hope this government does not take that disgraceful feat from MTN with this concept.

144,000 per unit ke? Ordinary a good 200ah deep cycle cost more than N144,000, before we even start talking about the inverters, charge controller, solar panels and accessories, and then cost of installation

Maybe the solar set up is just for charging phone and running a few lights.
You get it right

Electricity via solar power is actually the cheapest among all source of electricity generation. It can be as low as $14 per MW.

Are you talking about subsidy? Because the cost of single items like battery and even inverter (pure sine wave inverter) can be more that N144 000. Except you don't intend to run inductive loads like compressors and ac fans.

You know much about solar... Kudos

Show us the model of what you're talking about so we understand what you're saying.

How come the conceivers of this idea didn't consider the promotion of local production of solar panels and batteries as the driving force of this idea? Won't that do more for the economy?

What's tha business?

You mean 5 million Nigerians shouldn't receive, benefit from this scheme or even get electricity via this solar program until we convince other Nigerian to start manufacturing solar panels and batteries? When and how long are the interested Nigerians going to conceive, finance, built the manufacturing plants and start selling to Nigerians and in the meantime, we should juts sit down and look and do nothing?

What kind of backward thinking is this?

It's like saying we should not buy cars or start flying in planes until we start manufacturing cars or build airplanes.

Some of you just criticize as if it is by force toc criticize.

Free advise for you... If you are in the midst of more than 2 people and after 5 minutes you don't know who is the mumu, then you are the mumu.

Nothing will work as far as you have the set of politicians you have now ... Period.

Fun fact ... All major developments in Nigeria today are from the private sector... Go to sleep now and let that sink in.

But have you used it before? Do you know that, that panel has an expiry date usually 2-5 years depending on the type of panel you bought. Now this is apart from battery replacement and others. By the time you calculate what you have spent for two or three years and compare it with when you use fuel generator, the difference will be clear

You save the planet by using renewable energy.

God bless you. I have said this severally. Solar is not an option to electricity. It is even cheaper to buy a petrol generator than using solar
Solar still remains the cheapest source of electricity per kilowatt. When comparing petrol generator and solar do it over 6 to 10 years and you will see that your generator wont come close. Lots of big companies in naija are going total solar and you and I know they did their home work before gong into it.

Bro, your assumption is wrong. Solar panel has no expiry date and the lowest warranty I have seen is 15 years and some offer 25 years back warranty. As long as it did not get damaged due to wrong fixing or stone hitting the panel, it will continue to generate energy.

I don't need any research to know that regardless of the wattage produced by the units in this program, it's still going to pull a lot of MW consumption off the National grid for you other Nigerians, businesses, plants and industries to benefit from.

I don't need any research to know that regardless of the wattage produced by the units in this program, it's still going to create tens of thousands of jobs.

I don't need any research to know that regardless of the wattage produced by the units in this program, it's still going to scale up human and business productivity across Nigeria.

I don't need any research to know that regardless of the wattage produced by the units in this program, it's still going to create and increase local production of solar panels and accessories all over the Nigeria.

Beats me why many of you by standard default must criticize, negate and discount whatever beneficial efforts, policies and programs the govern put out there to help you and make your life better, I think many of you are so used to the government not doing anything in your favor that you must negate their efforts when they actually or finally do.

For us to know the Efficiency of the program, Government buildings and parastatals should be taken off the National grid to test the efficiency of their solar program, after all they are trying to convince an average Nigerian that solar is better, they should do so by examples.

Our street lights need to be taken off Diesel engines as well as the National grid, when the general population see how efficient solar systems are, they will embrace the program.
