Politics / Re: We Will Mobilise Against Muslim-Muslim Presidential Ticket – CAN by Postgraduatengr: 11:34am On Jun 15, 2022
I totally agree with CAN.

Under GEJ Islamic terrorist stopped at Abuja and we thought that was the worse. Under Buhari, ISWAP, an international Islamic terrorist group attacked Owo in Ondo state.

It seems the more the presidency is Muslim the more terrorist slide south of Nigeria. All right thinking Nigerians, should speak against this evil of Muslim-Muslim presidential & VP candidates

Education / American Genius Student Wins .7 Billion Naira Scholarships by Postgraduatengr: 10:53am On May 24, 2019
An American High school student and recipent of multiple college admissions has raked in 2 million dollars (approx. 720 million naira) worth of Scholarships.

Kiscada Hastings, a senior high student at International Leadership of Texas Keller-Saginaw High School in Fort Worth, TX has every reason to smile and is spoilt for choice on the college admission to accept. Kiscada Hastings applied to many colleges, and ended up being accepted to 17 of them.
His High school, International Leadership of Texas schools, encouraged students to apply to multiple schools. The cumulative of the successful admissions and scholarships are worth over 700 million naira.

Hastings has finally narrowed his choice and decided to accept the offer from the prestigious Yale University.

720 million naira is no joke. This is far more than the combined 2018 budget allocation for Adekunle Ajasin University and Ondo State University of Medical Science.

While you chew on that, congratulations, Kiscada Hastings.

Travel / Canada Survival Tips For International Students by Postgraduatengr: 1:28am On May 10, 2019
Canada is a top destination for Postgraduate studies by Nigerians, Indians, Chinese and many others. I wrote a blog post previously, about why you should choose Canada for postgraduate study.

Getting admitted and obtaining a temporary resident visa (TRV) is the biggest hassle initially. Upon arrival at Canada, you're welcomed into a new world entirely.

For Nigerians and Africans, the 'strangeness' can be a big worry. Canada is extremely cold and a highly developed country. Depending on the province, there would be peculiar challenges that needs information or a help to resolve. Hence this post.

HOW DO I SURVIVE AS A FRESH INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IN CANADA?

This tips would definitely help. The list is not exhaustive, so you can add yours at the end.

1. Get Accommodation: Every international student in Canada needs a place to put up. Accommodation for Students can be classified into two: on-campus and off- campus.

On-campus accommodation is usually the hostels, provided by your University. You can choose to have a single room or to have roommates. On-campus accommodation is limited, it is also expensive but has facilities needed for good life. The major disadvantage is that during semester breaks or holidays, students vacate the hostel. Such student would need an accommodation before the school resumes again.

Off-campus accommodation is basically renting an apartment around the university. Student can choose their taste and pair up to reduce cost. Cost vary across the Canadian provinces. Rent is paid monthly. You can check Canada homestay network or Canada student accommodation for contact or cost information about off-campus accommodation in your province.

2. Find your way around campus or the city: As a new student, finding your day way around campus and your city would be a challenge. This also includes knowing bus routes and bustops so you wouldn't be carried away, far from destination.

A solution to this is to make use of Google maps. Take notes of the names of buildings and streets. Also, keep major landmark in memory so you can always describe your present location. When in doubt, politely ask someone close by.

3. Open a Bank Account: One of the things to be done within a week of arrival is the opening of bank account. This is a straight forward process but has a handful of documentation.

Prepare your personal ID to begin. This can be your international passport, TRV, Acceptance/Admission letter. Some banks will also accept your school-issued student card as valid ID, especially if the bank is within the university vicinity. Take any two ID to the closest bank of choice.

There are five major banks across Canada, they are Bank of Montreal BMO, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce CIBC, Royal Bank of Canada RBC, Scotia Bank, Toronto Dominion TD. The choice of bank should be based on the service they put on offer. Ask questions about charges, minimum deposit etc. It is better to open a checking/current account. Get your debit card for withdrawal on ATM and purchases on POS or web

4. Get Basic Documents: Student ID, Bus pass, health insurance.

5. Integrate with fellow students

Jobs/Vacancies / How To Get The Dream Lecturing Job: What No One Told You by Postgraduatengr: 11:15pm On Jan 09, 2019
An academic position in a higher institution of learning is arguably one of the best career path. Apart from the not-too-bad financial rewards (which is probably, what you thought is most important, dead wrong!), there is a prestige is being called an Academic.

Holding a faculty position, in a university is a honour of great measure. Beyond that, many academic/lecturers set their job schedule for either classes or research. They travel often, and hold a global connection with fellow lecturers. Such fleixibility is rare in many other careers. Despite these pull, you may have wondered, why it is difficult getting fixed-in, to start that career as a University Lecturer.

How to get the dream lecturing job

Some of this tips are applicable to Nigeria, but can be helpful, no matter where you are.

Know the Minimum Entry Certificate: A university is a very formal institution, and requires its staff to be trained in a specialized field. You would need at least a Master degree, with a prospect of continuing to PhD, to be considered. A research Master degree, with a grade point in upper percentile is the aim.

To increase your opportunity to getting a lecturing job, better be patient and complete a Doctorate. While this is a longer way to go, its surely pays off. Actually, I have not met a PhD holder who is unemployed. Though it is also true that a fresh graduate can get a lecturing job as a Graduate Assistant, such chances are usually for First class graduates, and it doesn’t come all the time. So be prepared, you must go the long haul, to make a career as a university lecturer. It surely requires time and commitment.

Be in the University System: This is a no brainer, it is easier to get a lecturing job, when you are within the campus, than from outside. By inside, I mean, either as a student or non academic staff. In fact, you could be a staff on the faculty of the university, but not on the desired role or level. Head of Department and Faculty/College deans meet to discuss staff shortages. With the Vice chancellor’s approval, lecturing job openings are filled, even without advertisement. These Professors would rather recommend and recruit their brilliant postgraduate students, than an outsider. Getting a lecturing job from with in also means having your ears on ground. Make friends with people privy to information, before they are posted to the university’s website.

Take Part-time Lecturing Jobs: Its easier getting a part time position as a lecturer. Look around for distance learning programmes. This can be for a College of Education, Polytechnic or a University. While the work may be burdensome, with no commensurate pay, you will get invaluable experience. On your C.V, lecturing experience can put you ahead of competitors for the same position. It doesn’t matter, if the experience is from a part time school or not, as long as it is verifiable. Some part-time/ distance learning school hold on weekends, while others are during the holidays (sand wish programme).
Network through Former Lecturers: Networking is a time tested method to get jobs, not even only lecturing Job. In this case, your former university teachers will be good recommendation for you, especially in another University. Universities lecturers in the same specialization know each other pretty well, as they meet at conferences. A versitile professor would have solid contact in at least three other university. Such a persons name, not just on the C.V, but giving you a heads-in is a big plus to getting the lecturing job. Imagine, how blessed you will be, having about three to four of such networks. It helps beyond measure.

Attend Conferences and Publish in Journal: The number of conferences attended, and impact factor journal published is the most visible sign of a hardworking scholar. Getting the dream lecturing job would be just so easy.
Dream lecturing job: It can be a reality
Combination of the above tip the the following will be helpful.

1 Have a positive mindset

2 Have a good C.V/resume, stating academic awards, conference attended and journal papers published.

3 Use academic staff, preferable a high ranking professor as referee. Its good you put the on notice too.

4 Submit your work to journal search and list site like Google Scholar’s Academia

5 Visit academic job boards.

Education / Why You Should Have Your Postgraduate Study In Canada by Postgraduatengr: 1:05am On Jan 08, 2019
Canada is increasingly becoming a popular destination for Nigerians desiring a postgraduate degree abroad. Other popular countries for postgraduate study are The UK, Germany, United States and Malaysia. The attraction towards Canada seems to be obvious, unfortunately, many Nigerians are still unaware.
