There is a suspected outbreak of a viral disease identified as Gastroenteritis in some parts of Ogun, the State Government has said. The disease which is also known as stomach flu broke out in Magboro, Ofada area of Obafemi-Owode Local Government, Ogun State. The State Ministry of Health informed that the disease is spreading among okada riders and scavengers in the environment. DAILY POST learnt that viral gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection marked by watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever. The disease is usually caused by contact with an infected person or by ingesting contaminated food or water. Healthy people who have the disease may recover without complications. However, medical practitioners say it could be “deadly” for infants, older adults and people with compromised immune systems. The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, while confirming the outbreak of gastroenteritis in a statement, said the reported cases “were predominant among commercial motorcyclists and scavengers in the area.” She explained that the index case was said to have recently returned from a trip outside Ogun and that she has been linked to the source of the outbreak. The health commissioner said a public toilet was the channel of transmission, adding that the toilet has been sealed up for sanitation. “The causative agent cannot be confirmed yet because appropriate sample could not be collected as there was no active case yet to commence antibiotics,” the Health Commissioner stated. She disclosed that a number of people “are currently receiving treatment to control the number of casualties.” The commissioner blamed an unregistered clinic being run by a quack as having contributed to the outbreak, regretting that cases were being managed unreported. Meanwhile, Coker informed that the state government has set up a treatment centre at the Magboro-Akeran Health Centre, where curative items have been made available by the Department of Public Health. Adjourning communities had been sensitised on what to do and where to seek care or report any suspicious cases, she said. https://dailypost.ng/2021/09/06/new-viral-disease-breaks-out-in-ogun-okada-riders-scavengers-infected/ |

Garba Shehu, spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari, has alleged that Tuesday’s attack on Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna is an “opportunistic crime,” politically motivated to embarrass the Buhari regime. Mr Shehu made this statement while speaking on Channels TV Politics Today programme Wednesday night. “It is an opportunistic crime. It is political. Somebody wants to embarrass the government by doing this because we are coming from major successes,” Mr Shehu retorted when asked about the scary matter. In the same breath, Mr Shehu alluded there was no fact to support his assertion but that “In a political climate where people seek to make political capital out of this unfortunate incident, you don’t rule out anything.” “Investigation are ongoing,” he clarified. Mr Shehu further said the Buhari regime has achieved much in the war against insurgency in the North-East, adding that it would take time for sanity to be restored in the country. “Look at how Boko Haram are ravaging in the North-East, they are surrendering. All of the victories that are recorded. Even in the North-west, these bandits are being taken out in large numbers and its is a matter time for sanity to be restore.” People Gazette reported on Tuesday how armed bandits raided Nigerian Defence Academy, killing three persons. Last week Friday,, 60 persons were kidnapped at Rimi village in Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara State. https://gazettengr.com/wp-content/uploads/Garba-Shehu-1-1.jpg https://gazettengr.com/nda-attack-politically-motivated-to-embarrass-buhari-regime-says-garba-shehu/ |

Dpa reports that four members of Switzerland’s mission in Afghanistan were also on board. The German government decided on Friday to reduce its embassy staff to a minimum and took all staff to the airport on Sunday. The first evacuation flight was by a U.S. aircraft as Germany’s Bundeswehr was not scheduled to send its own planes, two A400M aircraft, to Kabul until later. The German planes would form a central part of a so-called airlift operation over the next few days to evacuate German embassy staff, German nationals and local personnel who have worked or are working for the Bundeswehr or other ministries. The two military transport aircraft have space for 114 passengers. They will fly the passengers to a third country so far not named by the German government for security reasons. From there, they would be flown to Germany in a civilian aircraft. It is not yet clear how many people will be flown out in total. Specially trained paratroopers from the Bundeswehr’s Rapid Forces Division are supporting the operation. German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on Sunday described the situation as dangerous but said the government was ready for all scenarios. On Sunday, Taliban militants entered the Afghan capital Kabul and took control of the presidential palace after rapidly taking cities across the country in recent days, in some cases without a fight. More than 120 families at Unguwar Tsallake area of Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa, have been displaced by floods. The Information Officer in charge of the council, SunusiDoro, told NAN on Saturday that the incident occurred after a torrential rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Mr Doro said the flood submerged more than 120 houses, thereby rendering the occupants homeless. “Some of the houses have already collapsed while others were submerged. “Most the occupants are now staying in their relatives’ residences, as the water has denied them access to their houses,” Mr Doro said. He explained that the flooding had also cut off the general hospital in the area, adding that the residents had to navigate through the flooded water before they could access the facility. The information officer quoted the Council Chairman, Musa Shuaibu, as sympthising with the victims, appealed to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to come to their aid. Mr Shuaibu said that the council, at its level, had provided empty sacks for residents to erect embankments, as part of measures to control flooding. The council boss also advised people in the area to always clear culverts and drains in order to ensure a clean environment and free flow of water, whenever it rained. “The chairman also disclosed that the council would soon purchase relief items for distribution to victims of cholera outbreak in the area. “He said that the council had so far spent N400,000 on the procurement of drugs to the seven villages affected by the outbreak,” Mr Doro said. https://gazettengr.com/flood-displaces-120-families-in-jigawa-official/ |
The Junior Achievement Nigeria, JAN, in collaboration with Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has reached over 1000 young women with its empowerment programme aimed at impacting leadership skills in them while bridging the gender equality gap. Speaking at the 20th Leadership, Empowerment, Achievement and Development (LEAD) Camp, the Executive Director of JAN, Foluso Gbadamosi, said, ”At JA Nigeria, we take girl empowerment very seriously not only because of our commitment to contribute our quota to advancing SDG-5 (fifth Sustainable Development Goal), but also because we believe young girls should be equipped with life skills needed to assume leadership positions in the nearest future. Since the program started in 2000, we have reached over 1,000 girls.’’ Also commenting on the just concluded LEAD Camp, the Chief Brand Marketing Officer of Union Bank, Ogochukwu Ekezie-Ekaidem, said, “Union Bank is delighted to partner with JA Nigeria for the seventh year, to organise the LEAD camp. This sustained partnership is a strong indication of our commitment to supporting the push for gender balance.’’ The LEAD Camp is an annual week-long program introduced in 2001, designed to identify and coach exceptional female students from across Nigeria. The program, which addresses United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, focused on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls, inspires and prepares young girls to become high-achieving leaders. To foster this mission, each year, participants are taken through a series of activities including leadership and empowerment, workshops, and panel sessions with leading women from the private and public sectors in Nigeria. This year, the Camp held virtuallyfor the second time since its inception, with girls joining in from various states across Nigeria. Marvelous Olabanji, a 2021 LEAD Camp participant from Topfield Schools, Lagos, said, ”I would like to appreciate Junior Achievement Nigeria for selecting me to be a part of LEAD Camp 2021. My experience was very amazing, I learnt a lot like coding, vision boarding, goal setting, personal hygiene, critical thinking.
