Wale Oke, president, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), has described the death of Wilson Badejo as a shocking and significant loss to the Christian community. Mr Badejo, a former general overseer of the Foursquare Church, died on Saturday at 74. The PFN president, in a condolence message in Ibadan on Sunday, said Mr Badejo gave his all to the service of the Lord while alive. He noted that his dedication enhanced the spread of the gospel to nations of the world. Mr Oke, the presiding Bishop of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Ibadan, said Mr Badejo lived a worthy life and would remain a challenge to the living. “Rev. Wilson Badejo was a strong-willed man who pursued righteousness till he breathed his last. “For everyone, death is a garb that will be worn by all at the appointed time. “Though humanly speaking, one wouldn’t have wanted him to go now; however, God is the ultimate decider of ‘when’ for everybody,” he noted. He said that death should always serve as a lesson of reminder that nobody would live in the world forever. Mr Oke lamented that many in society still behave as if they would never leave the earth. “In the case of Rev. Badejo, our joy and solace is that, having fought a good fight of faith, he has gone to rest with our Lord Jesus Christ. “And that’s what every Christian should work toward and crave for,” the renowned cleric said. While commiserating with the family, Foursquare Church and the Christian body in the country, the PFN president prayed that God would grant everyone concerned the fortitude to bear Mr Badejo’s transition to glory. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/478168-pfn-mourns-badejo-describes-death-as-shocking.html |

The Federal Government, today, said it stopped negotiations with bandits because the kidnappers used the money from ransom to equip and rearm themselves. The Minister of State for Education, Chief Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the First Lady’s Conference Room, Presidential Villa, Abuja. Asked on what the government was doing over the video that went viral where some of the kidnapped students in Kaduna State were being tortured by kidnappers, he said that efforts were being made to ensure that the students were rescued. According to him, “Truly speaking, it is disheartening anytime any of our students are taken at any point, I can assure you that the federal government is doing all that it can. We have held several meetings with our security personnel and that whole region. “Insecurity at the school level, you may understand stems from insecurity around the area. Before we had Chibok, there was Boko Haram in the area. It is the success of the military in more or less, incapacitating Boko Haram in the Northeast that led to some level of insurgents in the Northwest. “And as bandits appeared that they’ve started striking randomly at some of our schools from Jengave, Kangara. You know, everywhere. And the places where they’ve had to go, we’ve pursued them. But the containment policy of the military is actually in response to what we also did as the humanitarian element that surrounds it because the way the military will engage bandits once they have our citizens will not be the same way they will engage them ordinarily. “And therefore, they may not just go into the forest shooting at everything or everybody they see. And that has enabled the bandits to use some of our citizens as human shields. We are constrained to stop negotiations with bandits because we’ve seen that every time they get any payment, it leads to further escalation because they reequip and they rearm and then they go back. “Because if you notice what happened from the kidnap at the College of forestry, in Kaduna, this was prior to the kidnap at the Baptist College and at Usman Polytechnic before they got the university children. Now, there is none of our students that will be held that we’re happy at all. It doesn’t matter which level. One is too many at any time. “So yesterday (Tuesday) the military returned to have our children that they were able to rescue. We’ve seen the videos you alluded to, and while we cannot attest to their veracity with how authentic there is still concern, and we are in touch with the military authorities. They are in continuous pursuit of them. “I was in Katsina to discuss with the detachment that is overseeing that area and all the way to Buni Yadi in Kebbi state where we have some of our children still held. Tigana boys are the ones in Niger state, the Islamiya school. “We are continuously engaging, there is no such thing as federal government not engaging, almost day and night we are engaging. From anywhere that we are in the world we’re trying to engage and I’m just trying to assure Nigerians that as distressing as it is, we are on top of it. And we will keep doing all that we can possibly do to get our children and keep our students safe.” Asked the measures put in place by the federal government to ensure its schools are not attacked by bandits, he said, “I had already said that the whole of government approaches to security exercise is not just limited to our schools. “Yes, the federal government owns a few federal colleges around Nigeria, out of the 25,000 secondary schools, the federal government owns only 120 of them. And we are constantly policing each of our parameter areas. As far as we’re concerned, we have policemen, we have Civil Defence people, we are collaborating with the Ministry of Interior, and the Ministry of Police appears to have the personnel, boots on the ground everywhere. “But we’re not limiting ourselves to our own institutions at all, that we’re looking at the security as a national policy is a whole of government engagement. And we already had worked out with the rest of the governors and security operatives around the country on how to do this. And I just explained that if you look at a place like Kaduna state, with 512 secondary schools, we’ve had to look at those who are most prone, which from our analysis are exposed, girls secondary schools with boarding facilities are most at risk. “So what we’ve done is to look at the radius from response time at the security agency stations to where the schools are, and if exceeds the maximum reaction time that the military and us have worked out, we close down those schools and have them come and recite with or co-locate them with schools that are within the prescient of what we determined are safe at the moment. “If you go to Sokoto State, for instance, we’ve done buzzers we’ve done alarm systems, we’ve done perimeter monitoring, we’ve done community engagement platforms, we’ve done the SBMC procedures, which we put on school management bus and then attach security compliance officers alongside them, we are engaging everyone. “Well, if you look at what we’re doing in Borno, state, and all other places where we are at risk, because even in reopening the Chibok school if you see what Governor Babagana Zulum did there, what we did was to, first of all, get all the security apparatus around the area to be able to stay with response zones. “The federal government has also expanded its own forwarding basis. And if you understand some of the military intelligence that they use those to gather, those are forwarding basis so that before there are preemptive stack around the areas where people may not ordinarily congregate, and then isolate the forest reserves that are on the far belt of the Nigerian West Wing, where you see the continuous forest stretches that they’ve now put in military installations to interrupt them so that there is no continuous flow for any engagement. “I’m sure you’ve noticed that there’s been a reduction in the past few days. But I’m not saying that we are unchallenged but I am saying we are working to continuously engage them. Like I said, that’s the function of government problems will not go away. But if you have hired us as managers, and what we can do at the moment, is keep managing the situation I work at it.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/why-we-stopped-negotiations-with-bandits-―-fg/ |

The Paramount ruler of Jaba Chiefdom in Kaduna State, Dr Danladi Gyet Maude has been released after spending 2 days in the kidnapper’s den. Anthony Maude, a brother to the first-class chief in Kaduna state, told journalists on the phone that the monarch was released in the evening on Wednesday. The 83-year-old Dr Gyet Maude was abducted last Monday while on his farm in the neighbouring Gitata community of Nasarawa State. Although his abductors later demanded a N100 million ransom before he would be released, Anthony Maude did not give details on whether the ransom was paid or not. It was also not disclosed whether he was rescued by security agencies. The authorities are yet to react to the development. The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Ebeneezer Akintunde Akinyemi, who made this known in a press release made available to newsmen in Iselu, Ogun State, disclosed that the ceremony is scheduled to take place in his palace on the 19th September 2021. They hit the base in Sagme locality of the region by 4.00 a.m. local time on Saturday, two soldiers and a local resident told Xinhua. The militants, well-armed, some of them in military camouflage, arrived in a convoy of six vehicles, one of the soldiers said. After several hours of fighting, the commander of the military base was killed alongside six of his colleagues. “The soldiers were very brave and defended strongly. “It is thanks to that they were able to repel the attackers and saved more lives,’’ a soldier, who opted for anonymity, told Xinhua. The soldier added that casualties on the part of the militants remained unknown. Saturday’s attack was the deadliest on Cameroon army in more than 10 months, according to security reports. A man in Katsina, who named her daughter after President Muhammadu Buhari, Yahuza Ibrahim, has changed her name from Buhariyya to Kauthar. He said this is because he said the president has failed to fulfil his campaign promises. In a video clip seen by PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Ibrahim, who is from Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina, said his admiration for Mr Buhari made him to name his daughter “Buhariyya” “In 2015, just 26 days before Buhari was sworn in, my wife gave birth to a baby girl. I had promised that if the baby turned out to be a boy, I would name him Buhari and if it is a girl, Buhariyya.” However, he said his admiration of the president has changed, saying Mr Buhari has lost the goodwill he enjoyed. “Anyone who knows me knows I love Buhari for the sake of God, because everyone knows he was a good person. Before, when his name was mentioned, everyone felt he was the right person that could help in tackling our problems. But it has turned out to be the other way round.” https://i0.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2021/07/The-man-in-Katsina-who-named-her-daughter-after-President-Muhammadu-Buhari.jpg The man in Katsina, who named her daughter after President Muhammadu Buhari According to Mr Ibrahim, the president has not fulfilled any of his campaign promises. “I tell you, the president has not redeemed any of his campaign promises. After much dithering procrastination on the role he would play in the emergence of his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to play a decisive role in the forthcoming 2023 presidential elections. Indeed, rarely has it been seen that a president anywhere did otherwise. The only idea of a president in Nigeria playing a role in the emergence of his successor was President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is so far, the only one of the four presidents of the Fourth Republic to have completed two terms in office. Nigerians, indeed cannot forget the viciousness with which Dr. Obasanjo carried out his agenda to foist President Umaru Yar‘Adua as his successor. So brutish was the election that brought in the new president that Yar‘Adua on his inauguration confessed that his election was marred by irregularities. That confession was what kick-started the nation’s path towards progressive electoral reforms that have now been severely eroded by the present National Assembly leadership. Perhaps, the only election that was so marred by malpractise as the 2007 election was the 2019 election. The National Assembly and President Buhari had an opportunity to advance the electoral reforms prior to the 2019 election, but thrice the president vetoed the new Electoral Bill. President Yar‘Adua had kickstarted the process of electoral reforms that brought in credible elements from the civil society like Justice Mohammed Uwais, Prof. Attahiru Jega and Barrister Mike Igini. It is reflective of the reverses suffered since the advent of those reforms under the Buhari era that it would be suggested that a presidential aide in the person of Lauretta Onochie would be brought in to join the electoral team to midwife his succession. While many Nigerians in the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC had believed that President Buhari was contemplating being detached from the succession programme, his spokesman, Garba Shehu last Tuesday came out to rubbish that idea. Speaking to newsmen after the Sallah prayers, Shehu said that President Buhari would take an active role in determining his successor who he inferred would definitely not come from the PDP. Noting that Buhari would constitute an obstacle to the PDP’s dreams of regaining power, Shehu said: “We see PDP nursing the false hope of taking over power in 2023. The masses will never abandon President Buhari’s leadership. “I’m sure in 2023, they’re waiting for him to show the way,” Shehu had said. The assertion is one that is loaded with trepidation within and outside the APC. For the PDP, the assertion presupposes that the 2023 election could go the way of the 2019 or 2007 elections that were adjudged to be among the worst in the nation’s history. “If it goes that way, it means that by hook or crook and whether Lauretta Onochie is there or not, that the elections would go the way the incumbent desires. The claim that the president’s stock of 12 million votes would be available to push his succession agenda is an imagination that is far from reality. It is as such not a surprise that the APC has as a policy adopted the unpopular chorus against electronic transmission of votes and is supportive of the retention of collation centres – the axis of evil where election results are altered with brute force. It is remarkable that just about the same time that Mallam Shehu echoed the president’s succession agenda, that the national secretary of the APC’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe came out to say that the party would adopt the principle of consensus to choose its candidate. Remarkably, the option of consensus is one that is built into the constitution of the party. The other options are direct primary and indirect primary. The option of consensus becomes tenable when all aspirants agree among themselves to the adoption of one of them. It is a principle that is bound to prove risky, contentious and possibly rupture the party. But with the presidential baton in hand, it is expected that all possible rebellions would be squashed. The adoption of consensus suggests that those driving the presidential succession agenda have not been able to browbeat those they do not want to succeed Buhari into submission. It is now universally known that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is about the most potent force that is in the presidential race in the APC. Your correspondent now understands that Asiwaju’s strategies have given him an edge in a free and fair contest to be reckoned with as a possible winner in a presidential primary, indirect or direct. With support in key states in the Southwest, Northwest and Northeast and the South-South, Asiwaju is about the most potent force in the APC presidential race that the only way to stop him is the adoption of a consensus strategy. In that direction, your correspondent predicts that in few weeks time more overt moves to curtail the Jagaban of Borgu will commence. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/07/what-consensus-means-for-president-tinubu/ |
Suspected members of a notorious cult group, identified as Icelanders, Thursday night shot dead a soldier attached to the headquarters of security outfit, code named Operation Delta Safe, OPDS, located within Igbogene axis of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
