In what could be seen as a desperate move, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the results of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Edo State.

Daily Post reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the only body authorized by the Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act to announce election results.

However, in a press conference on Sunday, ahead of INEC’s collation of results at its central Collation Centre in Benin City, PDP governors held a press conference and announced the Edo governorship results.

Addressing the press, the Governor of Adamawa State, Umaru Fintiri, flanked by other governors of the party, stated that the figures they announced were from “our collation agent that was ongoing before INEC disrupted the process.”

Daily Post reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently locked in a tight race in the ongoing governorship election in Edo State.

A check by Daily Post on Sunday morning revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had uploaded about 97 percent of the 4,519 polling units’ results on its Results Viewing (IReV) portal.

The results indicated that Asue Ighodalo of the PDP and his APC counterpart, Senator Monday Okpebholo, are in a tight race.

According to the results on INEC’s IReV portal, while the PDP candidate is leading in the Edo South Senatorial District, the APC candidate leads in the Edo North Senatorial District.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) created the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to offer real-time access to election results straight from polling units.

The platform aims to enhance transparency in the electoral process and reduce the chances of vote tampering and manipulation.

IReV allows voters, observers, and interested parties to monitor ongoing elections and view results as they are uploaded. The platform presents images of election results from each polling unit, including the number of votes cast for each candidate and the overall vote percentages.

Step-by-step guide to checking INEC results using the IReV portal:

1. Access the INEC Result Portal: Visit the official INEC result website at http://inecelectionresults.ng.

2. Log In or Create a New Account: If you’ve used the portal for previous elections, log in using your existing credentials. If it’s your first time, click “Create New Account” and follow the prompts to set up your account.

3. Fill in Required Details: Enter the necessary information to complete the sign-up process.

4. Activate Your Account: A six-character activation code will be sent to your email. Copy this code, paste it into the required field on the portal, and click “Activate” to complete the registration.

5. Navigate to the Result Console: Once logged in, you’ll be directed to the Result Console. Here, you’ll find tabs for various election categories, such as:

Presidential Election
Governorship Election
Senatorial Election
House of Representatives Election
State House of Assembly Election
Chairmanship Election
Councillor Election

6. Select the Election You Wish to View: Choose the election type you’re interested in, then select the specific state, Local Government Area (LGA), ward, and polling unit. The results are uploaded as images of the ECr8 Form, which contains the vote counts recorded by presiding officers.

7. View Past Election Results: The platform also provides access to results from previous elections, such as the Ekiti, Osun, and FCT Area Council elections.

The Management of the National Youth Service Corps has stated that it is waiting for the go-ahead for the implementation of new minimum wage for corpers.

NYSC said the decision on the N70,000 for workers, will be determined by the Federal Government.

The acting Director of the Information and Public Relations unit of the NYSC, Caroline Embu, made this known to our correspondent on Tuesday.

Recall that President Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill of N70,000 into law on July 29, 2024, following weeks of negotiations with the leadership of the organised labour.

Following the approval of the minimum wage, speculations had risen about the new pay for corps members, with some claiming to have received a directive to increase the capacity of their bank accounts to be able to receive above N50,000.

The supposed message read: “Most of the corps members’ accounts opened in the camp cannot take more than N50,000 at once. All corps members are advised to visit their various banks and confirm that their account can take or receive more than N70,000.”

However, the NYSC had released a statement stating that the purported message was “absolutely falsehood.”

“The attention of National Youth Service Corps management has been drawn to misleading information circulating in the media regarding payment of N70,000 minimum wage to corps members and the directive to upgrade their accounts. This is an absolute falsehood which is far from the truth.

“Corps members, parents and members of the public should note that no directive has been received from the relevant sector of government responsible for wages matters. It is, therefore, impossible for the NYSC to issue any information on such,” a statement, signed by the former Director Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, read.

However, asked on Tuesday if the scheme was currently negotiating a new pay for corps members, the acting spokesperson reiterated that the review of the allowance was in the hands of the Federal Government, and not the NYSC, noting that there was currently no change in corps members’ allowances.

“I don’t know how much the Federal Government will pay the corps members, I cannot tell you that for sure right now, because it is a decision of the Federal Government, not the NYSC. The only thing I can tell you now is that when the Federal Government increases the minimum wage, the corps members are expected to enjoy an increase in their allowance too, just like the DG said,” she said.

The Edo State government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has announced an indefinite postponement of the resumption of all schools in the state due to the recent increase in fuel prices.

In a memo issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, on Saturday in Benin, the resumption date, which was originally set for September 9, has been deferred until further notice.

“The Edo State Government hereby announces that the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, initially scheduled for Monday, September 9, 2024, has been postponed until further notice,” Akin-Longe stated.

Akin-Longe added, “This decision has been made in response to the rising tension and challenges resulting from the recent fuel price increase.”

The government advised parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely supervise their children and wards during this period of uncertainty.

Meanwhile, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has criticised the government's decision on the indefinite suspension of school resumption date, calling it "costly political maneuvering."

The APC's Publicity Secretary in the state, Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) condemned the move, saying that the state government should not jeopardise children's education for political reasons.

Uwadiae-Enosorogbe said, “It’s unacceptable to sacrifice our children's education because of fuel price hikes,” adding, “Fuel prices have fluctuated before, and we should not allow this to disrupt the educational system.”

He pointed out that there has been no significant outcry from parents or protests regarding fuel prices affecting school attendance, making the government's decision seem illogical.

He said “The state government has made a grave error. This decision is not in the best interest of the students, parents, or the educational system as a whole,”

Uwadiae-Enosorogbe urged a reversal of the decision, noting that education in the state has already suffered under the previous PDP administration.

He highlighted that recent results from the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) ranked Edo 26th, a sharp decline from its previous top positions.

“How will the government compensate for the additional time students will miss from school? Meanwhile, parents have not complained about their ability to send their children to school,” he added.

Uwadiae-Enosorogbe then called on stakeholders to persuade the government to reopen schools, stressing that it was unreasonable to keep students at home when parents had already paid school fees and purchased textbooks.

According to him, “The children are eager to return to class, and the government should not use political strategies to hinder their education. This action is a mistake, and it serves no one’s interest.”

Vice President Kamala Harris gave her first in-depth media interview since becoming the Democratic nominee for president, answering questions Thursday from CNN’s Dana Bash.

Pressed by Bash about what she would do on “day one,” Harris focused on what she said was her agenda to bolster the middle class.

Day one it’s going to be about, one, implementing my plan for what I call an opportunity economy,” she said. “I’ve already laid out a number of proposals in that regard, which includes what we’re going to do to bring down the cost of everyday goods, what we’re going to do to invest in America’s small businesses, what we’re going to do to invest in families, for example, extending the child tax credit to $6,000 for families for the first year of their child’s life to help them buy a car seat, to help them buy baby clothes, a crib.”

Harris added that she would also begin pushing her plan to build more affordable housing across the country.
‘My values have not changed’

In one exchange, Bash asked Harris about policy changes on issues like her past support for the Green New Deal and for a ban on fracking since running in the Democratic primary for president in 2019.

“Dana, I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed,” Harris responded.

She went on to note her commitment to fighting climate change and to try to address the current wave of undocumented immigration.

“We have set goals for the United States of America — and by extension, the globe — around when we should meet certain standards for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as an example. That value has not changed,” she said. “My value around what we need to do to secure our border. That value has not changed.”

On Israel, Harris puts hope on ceasefire agreement

Bash asked Harris if she would consider withholding weapon shipments in an effort to influence Israel as it wages a retaliatory war against Hamas in Gaza that has killed 40,000 people, according to Palestinian health officials.

“Let me be very clear. I am unequivocal and unwavering in my commitment to Israel’s defense and its ability to defend itself, and that’s not going to change,” she said.


At the same time, Harris took issue with the number of civilian Palestinians that have been killed in Israel’s military operation in Gaza.

“Israel has a right to defend itself, we would. And how it does so matters,” she said.
As for whether she would change U.S. policy if elected president, Harris kept focus on the need for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

“We have got to get a deal done. This war must end,” she said, adding that she ultimately supports a two-state solution.

Going on the attack on securing the border

Echoing her stump speech, Harris sought to flip the script on the surge of undocumented immigration that occurred under the Biden administration by blaming Trump for torpedoing a bipartisan Senate compromise to beef up border security and overhaul the asylum process.

“Donald Trump got word of this bill that would have contributed to securing our border, and because he believes that it would not have helped him politically, he told his folks in Congress, ‘Don’t put it forward.’” Harris said. “He killed the bill, a border security bill that would have put 1,500 more agents on the border, and let me tell you something, the Border Patrol endorsed the bill.”

“He killed the bill,” she said of Trump, adding, “I will make sure that it comes to my desk, and I would sign it.”
Pressed by Bash on whether she still supported the idea that the border should be “decriminalized,” as she indicated by raising her hand during a 2019 debate, Harris offered a different view on Thursday.

“I believe there should be consequence. We have laws that have to be followed and enforced that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally, and there should be consequence,” she said.

Pledge to appoint a Republican to Cabinet position

Harris said that if she is elected in November, she would pick at least one Republican Cabinet member in her administration.

“I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences,” she said. “And I think it would be to the benefit of the American public to have a member of my Cabinet who was a Republican.”Not taking Trump’s bait

Bash asked Harris to respond to the incendiary comments Trump made earlier this month during an appearance at the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists. During a contentious interview, Trump said that Harris had purposefully misrepresented her ethnic background and only recently “became a Black person.”

But Harris made clear that she wanted no part of what she regarded as a “tired,” racially motivated attack.
“Same old, tired playbook,” she said. “Next question, please.”

Hackers have taken over the official Facebook page of the Kano State Hisbah Board and posted inappropriate and explicit media content.

The incident, which happened on Wednesday, has continued to attract condemnation from members of the public over the ugly trend.

A Facebook user, Anisa Sani reacting said; “Ah Subhanallahi this hacker U aren’t trying at all, how can u hack an account like dis with a good reputation and be posting such nonsense.”

Another user Abbas Abubakar Jos wrote; “Hisbah should put his social media department into the hands of experts on internet affairs, to avoid this kind of hacking that bad people are doing to the department.”

Unwana Umoinwang said; “This incident shows how vulnerable even government bodies are to cyber-attacks. It’s a serious wake-up call for better cybersecurity measures across all official platforms.”

Meanwhile, the Commander General of the Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, reacting to the development on Friday, said the board had addressed the situation.

He assured the public that the board’s ICT department is actively working to restore the page and is engaged in discussions with Meta to resolve the issue.

The Head of ICT at the Hisbah Board, Sani Zailani, noted that the account has experienced previous hacks and that Meta has been contacted regarding the latest breach, adding that Meta has pledged to resolve the issue within 48 hours.

He expressed appreciation for the support and concern shown by the public, emphasizing ongoing efforts to recover the page and regain control.

This is coming days after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC’s X handle was restored after being allegedly hacked by suspected internet fraudsters otherwise known as Yahoo boys.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man over the alleged killing of his 8-year-old son over a misplaced sewing thread on August 5 in the Epe area of the state.

According to reports, the suspect became enraged after he called for his sewing thread and discovered the minor had misplaced it.

In anger, he doused petrol on his son. The petrol had adverse effect on the boy, causing him to vomit white substances.

The suspect then proceeded to give the minor some palm oil to drink so as to ease the pain the petrol had caused on his body. Sadly, the minor lost consciousness and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctors.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said an autopsy will be carried out on the remains of the deceased while the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba for further investigation.

No fewer than 25 people were feared dead on Tuesday in an accident along the Ojo-Iwo Road section of the Ibadan-Lagos expressway, near the Agbowo/Ajao area.

The accident occurred when a trailer loaded with roofing sheets collided with an 18-seater Hummer bus, a Micra taxi, and a Honda CR-V car.

According to eyewitness reports at the scene, the trailer involved in the accident experienced brake failure, causing it to collide with three other vehicles travelling in the same direction, resulting in a devastating crash.

Narrating the incident to Vanguard, Mr. Emmanuel Omotoso and Mrs Funmi Adejumo, said the ongoing construction of the Lagos -Ibadan expressway could be responsible for the fatality as the other lane of the expressway was blocked.

However, the motorists appealed to Oyo State government to purchase heavy towing vehicles and ambulance buses for rescue operations in case of an emergency like it just occurred.

They equally called on the contractor handling the road construction to open up the other lane that was blocked to prevent future occurrences of accidents that claim many lives every day on the Ojo-Iwo Road expressway.

As of the time of filing this report, private heavy towing vehicles were instrumental in removing trapped vehicles from the scene, and some of the rescued passengers were transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Aduke Ajayi, better known as Aduke Gold, is dead.

The sad news was shared on Tuesday, August 13, by fellow gospel artiste, Esther Igbeke on social media, who posted a tribute with Aduke Gold’s picture and the caption: “A general has fallen. RIP.”

Aduke Gold broke into the gospel scene with her single, “Nitori 0go”. It featured on her popular eight-track album that was well received on social media.

Apart from her soul-lifting songs, Aduke Gold was also known for her inspiring story after she revealed her early struggles on Instagram.

She became orphaned at the age of four and had to survive a life of hardship.

She spoke about selling items like slippers, yam, and fried fish.

A man identified as Musa Bello has been caught with a fresh human skull of a yet-to-be-identified lady in the Amuloko area of Oyo state.

The suspect was arrested by residents of the area with the skull he tucked in a sack.

They noticed his strange movement in the area and immediately accosted him and demanded to see what was inside the sack. It was then discovered that he had a human skull inside.

When interrogated, he claimed he works with a syndicate and that they sell body parts.

He has since been handed over to the police.

Tragedy struck as a 14-year-old boy, identified as Malik Kareem, was reportedly beheaded for ritual in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident occurred at the Olorisaoko community in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

It was gathered that the victim recently wrote his final subject for the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) at Iyana Community Grammar School, Olode, Moniya, Ibadan.

Sources who spoke to The PUNCH said the victim, alongside his three other age groups, contacted a Muslim cleric, now at large, for a money ritual on that day.

The source said that unknown to him (the victim), the three other boys had bargained with the cleric to kill him for a money ritual.

Credible family sources said, “I was at home when one of my brothers ran to the house to inform me about the unfortunate incident. We quickly rushed down to the place to confirm it. When we got there, the Muslim cleric had already run away, but we found the victim’s lifeless body on the ground without a head.

“He was found in a pool of blood in that Islamic cleric’s house. The head has already been cremated.

The other three boys had earlier bargained with the cleric that they would use their friend for a money ritual. So, when they got there, he (the victim) was strangulated to death, beheaded and cremated. They will be using it to take pap every day, according to what they told us.”

Another informed family source said, “The cleric house has been set ablaze by yet-to-be-identified youths in the area.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said investigations had already commenced on the incident.

“Investigations have commenced on the incident, and you will be updated accordingly”, he stated.

In another development, two Chinese expatriates, identified as Chen Wenguang and Liang Ding, have been abducted in the Kémta/Abule-Owu area along Onigbedu Road in Ogun State.

The two were abducted around 1:45pm on Sunday when they left the company to visit their friends.

A police source, who was not authorised to speak on behalf of the command, informed our correspondent that Wenguang and Ding were affiliated with the Good One Carton Company situated in the area.

“Wenguang and Ding left the company on their own, without notifying security, including the police and military assigned to the company, nor did they inform the company itself.

“They mentioned to a few people that they were heading to Kémta Village, about a kilometre away from the company, to visit some friends,” the source said.

The spokesperson for the state command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday, stating that the kidnappers had contacted the company to demand a ransom for their release.

She said, “The company’s security supervisor reported that one of the expatriates called to inform him that Wenguang and Ding had been kidnapped and that the kidnappers were demanding money in exchange for their release.

“Our operatives in the Ewekoro Division, with the assistance of local vigilantes, military personnel from the Social Orientation and Safety Corps, local hunters, and other security groups, thoroughly searched the entire Kémta Village forest for the duo but were unable to find them.”

She said that efforts to secure the release of the duo were ongoing.
