The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man over the alleged killing of his 8-year-old son over a misplaced sewing thread on August 5 in the Epe area of the state.

According to reports, the suspect became enraged after he called for his sewing thread and discovered the minor had misplaced it.

In anger, he doused petrol on his son. The petrol had adverse effect on the boy, causing him to vomit white substances.

The suspect then proceeded to give the minor some palm oil to drink so as to ease the pain the petrol had caused on his body. Sadly, the minor lost consciousness and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctors.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said an autopsy will be carried out on the remains of the deceased while the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba for further investigation.

No fewer than 25 people were feared dead on Tuesday in an accident along the Ojo-Iwo Road section of the Ibadan-Lagos expressway, near the Agbowo/Ajao area.

The accident occurred when a trailer loaded with roofing sheets collided with an 18-seater Hummer bus, a Micra taxi, and a Honda CR-V car.

According to eyewitness reports at the scene, the trailer involved in the accident experienced brake failure, causing it to collide with three other vehicles travelling in the same direction, resulting in a devastating crash.

Narrating the incident to Vanguard, Mr. Emmanuel Omotoso and Mrs Funmi Adejumo, said the ongoing construction of the Lagos -Ibadan expressway could be responsible for the fatality as the other lane of the expressway was blocked.

However, the motorists appealed to Oyo State government to purchase heavy towing vehicles and ambulance buses for rescue operations in case of an emergency like it just occurred.

They equally called on the contractor handling the road construction to open up the other lane that was blocked to prevent future occurrences of accidents that claim many lives every day on the Ojo-Iwo Road expressway.

As of the time of filing this report, private heavy towing vehicles were instrumental in removing trapped vehicles from the scene, and some of the rescued passengers were transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Aduke Ajayi, better known as Aduke Gold, is dead.

The sad news was shared on Tuesday, August 13, by fellow gospel artiste, Esther Igbeke on social media, who posted a tribute with Aduke Gold’s picture and the caption: “A general has fallen. RIP.”

Aduke Gold broke into the gospel scene with her single, “Nitori 0go”. It featured on her popular eight-track album that was well received on social media.

Apart from her soul-lifting songs, Aduke Gold was also known for her inspiring story after she revealed her early struggles on Instagram.

She became orphaned at the age of four and had to survive a life of hardship.

She spoke about selling items like slippers, yam, and fried fish.

A man identified as Musa Bello has been caught with a fresh human skull of a yet-to-be-identified lady in the Amuloko area of Oyo state.

The suspect was arrested by residents of the area with the skull he tucked in a sack.

They noticed his strange movement in the area and immediately accosted him and demanded to see what was inside the sack. It was then discovered that he had a human skull inside.

When interrogated, he claimed he works with a syndicate and that they sell body parts.

He has since been handed over to the police.

Tragedy struck as a 14-year-old boy, identified as Malik Kareem, was reportedly beheaded for ritual in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident occurred at the Olorisaoko community in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

It was gathered that the victim recently wrote his final subject for the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) at Iyana Community Grammar School, Olode, Moniya, Ibadan.

Sources who spoke to The PUNCH said the victim, alongside his three other age groups, contacted a Muslim cleric, now at large, for a money ritual on that day.

The source said that unknown to him (the victim), the three other boys had bargained with the cleric to kill him for a money ritual.

Credible family sources said, “I was at home when one of my brothers ran to the house to inform me about the unfortunate incident. We quickly rushed down to the place to confirm it. When we got there, the Muslim cleric had already run away, but we found the victim’s lifeless body on the ground without a head.

“He was found in a pool of blood in that Islamic cleric’s house. The head has already been cremated.

The other three boys had earlier bargained with the cleric that they would use their friend for a money ritual. So, when they got there, he (the victim) was strangulated to death, beheaded and cremated. They will be using it to take pap every day, according to what they told us.”

Another informed family source said, “The cleric house has been set ablaze by yet-to-be-identified youths in the area.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said investigations had already commenced on the incident.

“Investigations have commenced on the incident, and you will be updated accordingly”, he stated.

In another development, two Chinese expatriates, identified as Chen Wenguang and Liang Ding, have been abducted in the Kémta/Abule-Owu area along Onigbedu Road in Ogun State.

The two were abducted around 1:45pm on Sunday when they left the company to visit their friends.

A police source, who was not authorised to speak on behalf of the command, informed our correspondent that Wenguang and Ding were affiliated with the Good One Carton Company situated in the area.

“Wenguang and Ding left the company on their own, without notifying security, including the police and military assigned to the company, nor did they inform the company itself.

“They mentioned to a few people that they were heading to Kémta Village, about a kilometre away from the company, to visit some friends,” the source said.

The spokesperson for the state command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday, stating that the kidnappers had contacted the company to demand a ransom for their release.

She said, “The company’s security supervisor reported that one of the expatriates called to inform him that Wenguang and Ding had been kidnapped and that the kidnappers were demanding money in exchange for their release.

“Our operatives in the Ewekoro Division, with the assistance of local vigilantes, military personnel from the Social Orientation and Safety Corps, local hunters, and other security groups, thoroughly searched the entire Kémta Village forest for the duo but were unable to find them.”

She said that efforts to secure the release of the duo were ongoing.

In a surprising turn of events, Nigerians on TikTok have begun sharing their account numbers after a bandit announced a giveaway as a reward for praising notorious bandit leader Bello Turji during the recent nationwide protests.

Recall that On August 1, a 10-day nationwide protest against economic hardship commenced in many parts of the country.

In northern Nigeria, the protest was marred by looting and vandalism.

Meanwhile, as the protest reduced across the country, a bandit announced a giveaway on TikTok.

The terrorist claimed that their group is grateful and pleased that their leader was referred to as a ‘hero’ by some individuals from the northern region.

He said, “May the peace and blessings be with you all Nigerians. Protesters, we heard you guys are praising Mohammed Bello Turji.

“We are grateful, we are grateful to you, may you achieve success. Bello Turji is greeting. Send your account details; Bello Turji wants to do something for you people.”

Numerous individuals surprisingly complied with the terrorist’s request, sharing their bank account details in the comment section of the viral video.

However, it was unable to confirm whether the terrorist actually followed through on his promise.

Five months ago, viral videos on TikTok, showed bandits flaunting cash purportedly collected as ransom for their victims have ignited widespread anger.

A counter-insurgency expert and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, brought attention to these videos through a series of posts on his X on Monday.

Makama said the account responsible for sharing the videos has amassed over 3,000 followers, some of whom are openly identifying as bandits, proudly displaying firearms and donning military or police uniforms.

He wrote, “Audacity: Bandit on Tiktok flaunting and showing off ransom money he collected from his victims.


“The user of the account has 3,000 followers, some of them are bandits who openly show off their riffle and dressed in military or police uniforms. TikTok platform has given room for insurgents to promote their campaign of terror without being restricted”

Meanwhile, the development has raised questions about the intersection of social media, criminal influence, and public response in Nigeria.

The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended MTN Nigeria for its donation of N1 billion to the federal government’s Food Support Programme and 4,600 digital devices for distribution to schools.

Vice President Kashim Shettima hailed the telco giant on behalf of the government while receiving its Mr. Ernest Ndukwe at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, August 9, 204.

Shettima said: “I am hugely proud of your (MTN’s) stability as a company and commitment to the progress of our country.

“We have witnessed a couple of changes in the industry, but you have remained stable and strong. On behalf of my boss, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I want to sincerely thank you for this gesture.”

Shettima further said the donation by the company will be judiciously managed by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

On the distribution of 4,600 digital devices, each pre-installed with the U-lesson application, the Vice President said the MTN team will liaise with his office to work on the beneficiary criteria and facilitate the distribution of the devices to secondary schools in the six geo-political zones.

He expressed confidence that the gesture by the company would go a long way in supporting the government’s efforts to address the situation in the country, including support for the educational needs of the poor and vulnerable.

While calling on other companies in the country to emulate MTN in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility, the VP assured the business community that the Tinubu administration remains pro-business and its policies will, in a short time, begin to manifest for all to see.

Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of MTN Nigeria commended the federal government for its efforts to revive the economic fortunes of the country through various initiatives rolled out across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of government.

He pledged the company’s support to the present administration, noting that the gesture is in line with MTN Nigeria’s shared value objectives of “the AMBITION 2025 strategy” where MTN seeks to support strategic initiatives of the federal government.

On the N1 billion donation, Mr. Ndukwe said: “It aims to support the most vulnerable, marginalized, and underserved communities, ensuring no one is left behind through increased collaboration and partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria.”

He expressed hope that the devices donated by the company will support the federal government’s objective to increase digital literacy in secondary schools and improve creativity, analytical thinking, adaptability, and students’ access to current information in science and technology.

The development comes amid the nationwide protest aimed to call for the government to end “bad governance” and address economic hardship in the country.

The protest was fueled by surging inflation, at a 28-year high, and government economic policies that pushed the naira to record lows against the dollar.

At least 17 persons were reportedly killed in Abuja, Kano, Niger, Borno, Kaduna and Jigawa, with several others injured on the opening day of the protest against the nation’s worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation and against the corruption and alleged bad governance that have stifled its development.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters earlier reported that the #EndBadGovernance protests united the faiths of participating Nigerians as videos showed the moment some Christians provided protection to Muslims as they observed their Juma'at prayers amid the nationwide protests in Lagos and Osun states.

SaharaReporters saw that protesters formed a barricade around their Muslim counterparts in Ojota area of Lagos while the latter observed prayers on Friday video — the second day of the demonstration.

Same incident occurred in Osogbo, Osun State, which showed a rare moment of unity and cooperation among people of different faiths in Nigeria.

The act of mutual help highlights the cooperative spirit developing from the protests, despite the escalating tensions and hardships experienced by demonstrators.

A comprehensive situation report issued by the United Action Front of Civil Society on Friday had stated that 21 people died and 1,154 were arrested by security operatives during the #EndBadGovernance protest nationwide.

This was contained in a press release issued by Olawale Okunniyi, Head, Coordinating Secretariat United Action Front of Civil Society on Friday.

The statement added that 175 people were injured since the commencement of the protest on Thursday.

A young boy has been shot and killed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as the #EndBadGovernance protest enters the third day.

The boy was said to have been killed at close range around the Zenith Bank area of Kubwa.

An eyewitness who spoke after the boy was shot said the deceased was not part of the protest.

“The boy was not part of the protesters, he was coming on his own after the police had pointed gun at us from a different position,” the eyewitness said.

Activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, described the incident as an unprovoked murder.

Adeyanju said the boy was just watching the protesters when he was shot dead.

In a message sent to DAILY POST, Adeyanju said: “IGP Kayode Egbetokun and his bloodthirsty men should come and eat the meat of this innocent young guy shot on the neck on close range at Kubwa by Zenith Bank.

“Clearly this is unprovoked murder as the boy was just sight-seeing the protesters of #Endbadgovanance# before this ugly end.”

On Saturday, August 3, the Nigeria Police Force put out an update on the incidents that have been recorded in the ongoing nationwide protests against economic hardship in the country.

The Police also dismissed a report by Amnesty International that 13 individuals have so far lost their lives in the ongoing protests, which began on 1st August, 2024.

This is even as the Force said it has also arrested a total of 681 individuals alleged to have committed various criminal offenses, recovering two AK-47 rifles and assorted live ammunition from protesters.

The Police warned that the ongoing protest has turned violent, and advised law abiding citizens to immediately withdraw from the protest.

In a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer on Saturday, the Nigerian Police said the total number of deaths recorded so far during the protests is seven.

According to the statement, nine Police officers sustained various degrees of injuries during attacks by protesters.

Giving a breakdown of incidents from the first two days of the nationwide protests, Adejobi said: “In Borno State, four (4) individuals lost their lives and thirty-four (34) were severely injured in a terrorist attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP elements who infiltrated the crowd of protesters and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

“Additionally, an incident occurred involving an unregistered Honda Prelude car that ran into the protesters, resulting in the deaths of two (2) civilians.”

The police spokesman also said that there was another incident reported in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State where a group of individuals mobilized to loot a shop, leading to a local vigilante man killing one of the looters.

He said there were no other recorded fatalities during the protests apart from those he mentioned.

However, Adejobi explained that incidences of armed robbery, arson, mischief, looting of public institutions and private businesses, destructions of both public and private property were recorded during the protest.

He said arrests were made with respect to the criminal incidences and a number of recoveries made from the suspects while the protest was going on.

Some prices of some perishable foods have been reduced by about 50 per cent in Lagos amid the ongoing nationwide hunger protest.

The protest with hashtag #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria is planned to end on 10 August.

It is aimed at calling the federal government’s attention to the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

Some traders and buyers at the Ile-epo food market in the Alimosho-Agege area of Lagos confirmed the development in separate interviews on Friday.

Local food markets across the area witnessed fewer activities than usual due to the ongoing nationwide hunger protests.

A tomato trader at Ile-epo market, Agege area, Rabiu Aliu, said the price of some perishable food items ranging from tomatoes, chilli pepper and others dropped to minimise loss due to low patronage caused by the protest.

“A 50kg basket of tomatoes now sells for between N40,000 and N50,000 as against N80,000 to N100,000 two weeks ago. A 25kg basket now sells between N18,000 and N19,000 as against N30,000 to N40,000 two weeks ago.

“We have no choice but to sell off because few customers are available to buy the produce. The purchasing power is actually low at the moment,” Aliu said.

Another trader, Mukit Afolabi, said that the price of perishable items had dropped in the market as a result of the hunger protest.

“On Day 1 of the protest, tomatoes were even cheaper because there was no one to buy. I bought a 5kg basket of tomatoes at N4,000. As of two weeks ago, it sold for N12,000. So, I think the protest is contributory to the drop in price.

“However, rodo (scotch bonnet pepper) is still expensive. On Monday, a bag was sold for N40,000 but today, a bag sells at N84,000 because it is currently unavailable in the market.

“No produce truck has delivered any pepper since Wednesday, the day before the protest began,” Ms Afolabi said.

A foodstuff trader, Ibrahim Ahmed, also affirmed a drop in the price of rice and beans.

“A 50kg bag of short grain rice now sells for N73,000 as against N83,000 last month, while the long grain sells for N78,000 per 50 kg bag as against N87,000 to N88,000. A paint bucket of honey beans now sells for N10,000 as against N12,000 it was sold in July. Other varieties now sell for between N8,000 and N9,000,” he said.

Other items, such as groundnut and palm oil, recorded steep increases in price.

Hope Osagie, a trader of the produce at the Agege Market, said that the price of the produce had increased in the last couple of days.

“A 25 litre of groundnut oil now sells at N60,000 as against N38,000 that was sold a month ago. While 25 litre of palm oil now sells for N36,000 as against N27,000 in July.

“We really do not know the reason for the hike but generally foodstuff prices have been rather unpredictable,” Ms Osagie said.

However, a buyer, Anuoluwa Olayinka, expressed excitement over the drop in the price of tomatoes and other perishable items.

“I bought as much as I could afford as I saw the price had dropped. Well, there are just few people in the market, which is quite unusual for a Friday. So, I guess traders just want to sell off to minimise loss,” Olayinka said.

Another buyer, Ada Uzor, said, “Foodstuff prices are unpredictable, but I think the protest contributed to the slight price drop of some items.”

On Saturday, August 3, officers of the Nigeria Police Force opened fire on protesters and journalists at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, during the end hunger protest.

Daily Post reports that protesters, mostly youths, had gathered in front of the stadium for the day three of the 10-day protest to end bad governance in Nigeria.

The heavily armed men, who arrived the venue around 11:45am, ordered them to leave.

Following their refusal to obey the order, the policemen opened fire on the protesters, including journalists at the venue.
