President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that though he and his team may not have been the best hands for the job, God knows why he put them at the helm of affairs in Nigeria. Speaking at a national breakfast meeting which was held at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Saturday morning to intercede for the nation, the President noted that by God's grace this government will not fail and was very optimistic that the nation will change for good. "I always make my supplications to God that in selecting me as the President of this country, the Vice President, the Governors, members of the national assembly, the ministers, we are not the best material but God knows why he choose us and we pray He should use us to change this country. "We believe that with God using us collectively we will be able to transform this country. We all as Nigerians we want a better country, we want a country that there would be peace, power, that will take care of our health needs, that we can move freely from one part of the country to the other, that our children will have hope. And God sometimes use most impossible cause to solve human," he said. President Jonathan also said that as daunting as the challenges facing Nigeria may appear, he trusts in the efficacy of the Bible truth that the prayer of the righteous avails much adding that Nigeria will emerge from this, a stronger nation. "With unwavering faith in God and renewed recommittment to the national course by us all, I'm confident that Nigeria will emerge from these trying times a stronger, more united, more stable and more prosperous nation. "Now than ever before our nation's leadership needs to rededicate itself to the realisation of the grand vision of one big strong multi ethnic, multi cultural, diverse but united nation which steered our founding fathers. We must live above that primordial tendencies which can only compromise our growth as nation. We should be guided by the ideals of justice, equity, selflessness and above all the fear of God in every conduct public or private," he said. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/god-chose-us-gej |

Gunshots and explosions rang out early on Wednesday in Kano, local residents said, in a region beset by violence by Islamist sect Boko Haram. Clashes between Boko Haram gunmen and security forces have flared up several times in Kano since the sect killed 178 people in Nigeria's second largest city last month, in its deadliest attack so far. "We were stopped from coming out for our early morning prayers, we couldn't leave the house. About 5am (0400 GMT) the gunshots and explosions started and they haven't stopped," Stephen Ahmed, a local Kano resident, told Reuters by phone. A police spokesman declined to give comment and the army was not contactable. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/violence-kano |
The Lagos State Police Command is yet to discover the whereabouts of one of its officers who allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old girl after shooting her sister. Corporal Emmanuel Okoye, attached to the Ifako Police Station at Bariga, kidnapped Patience Isabor on February 10, after he shot her elder sister, Blessing, in the cheek and hands. Blessing 19, is receiving attention at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, after undergoing series of surgery to remove the bullets from her body. According to neighbours, Blessing and Patience were dating Okoye. It was gathered that the police officer had initially been involved with Blessing, but fell in love when he met Patience. He, thereafter broke up with Blessing and proposed to her younger sister. "Corporal Emmanuel was dating Blessing the elder sister and their relationship had blossomed over the years but towards the end of last year, he dumped Blessing and started dating Patience," said a neighbour who did not want his name published. "Their mother was against the relationship but Patience and Corporal Emmanuel continued their love until last month when he came to meet her mother that she should allow him marry Patience. Mrs Isabor objected because she wants Patience to continue her education and she does not trust Corporal Emmanuel as he had disappointed her first daughter in the past." Infuriated with the development, the police officer was said to have barged into the Isabors' house on February 10, around 7pm, kidnapped Patience and shot Blessing when she tried to stop him. Since then, nobody has seen them. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/police-officer-kidnaps-girl |

Lawmakers who had initially kicked against the bill now do a volte-face offered little resistance to the planned removal of fuel subsidy, embedded in President Goodluck Jonathan’s medium term expenditure frame-work, during its second reading debate on the plan. At the resumed debate on the framework, after two months of intensive lobbying by the executive, majority of the senators praised the plan. The senate leadership is seeking an urgent approval of the plan, to catch up with the House of Representatives who had partially approved the plan the previous week. |

Justice Yetunde Idowu, of the High Court in Ikeja, Lagos State, has ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to pay N25 million to actor, Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, for denying his rights to personal freedom. The actor had sued the anti-narcotics agency for N100 million. Counsel to Baba Suwe, Bamidele Aturu, had argued, during the hearing of the suit, that the NDLEA violated his client’s rights by keeping him in its custody for more than the constitutionally allowed 24 hours without charging him with any offence.
