Police accuse Oshiomhole of lying about attack The police has debunked allegations by Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was behind the attack on his convoy during a campaign rally last Thursday. Louis Odion, the state's Commissioner for Information, in a statement on Thursday, had claimed that the governor was attacked at Usen in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of the state by suspected assassins who shot at the vehicles in the convoy, and had pointed accusing fingers at the PDP. Reacting, the PDP, in a statement, dismissed the allegation, claiming the convoy was ambushed by protesting students, and accused the governor's security aides of having killed some of them. However, the Edo State Police Command has accused both parties of being economical with the truth. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Anthony Airhuoyo, the command said: "On Thursday, the governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, went on a campaign tour to Usen Town in Ovia South West Area of Edo State. The governor, while on his way to the campaign venue, met the students of the Institute of Technology and Management, Usen, and promised to address them on his way back. After the campaign, at about 6.15pm, the governor decided to address them on a later date as it was already getting late. But the students barricaded the highway at the outskirts of the town and compelled the comrade governor to visit their institution." According to the police, nobody was killed in the ensuing clash between the governor's security aides and the students. A student of the institute, who did not want his name published, however confirmed that two of the protesters were injured in the fracas. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/police-accuse-oshiomhole-lying-about-attack |
Reps to hold emergency session over bribery scandal Federal lawmakers interrupt their recess to debate the corruption scandal that has engulfed a prominent member The House of Representatives is to reconvene on Friday for an emergency session over the $620,000 bribery scandal that has rocked the lower chamber currently on a two-week recess. The plenary will debate allegations that Farouk Lawan, the Chairman of the House adhoc committee on fuel subsidy management, received the huge sum as bribe from oil billionaire, Femi Otedola, to exonerate his firm, Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd, as one of the violators of government subsidy. Otedola agreed paying the money, claiming that he was working with law enforcement agents who secretly videotaped the payment in April just before the House deliberated on the committee’s report that was widely applauded. Lawan, on his part, claimed he accepted the money so as to expose Otedola’s graft tendencies. However, he had initially issued a statement denying the bribe; and had also reported the issue to the House leadership a month after the money was collected. Sources have said that only came after he realised he had been set up. Lawmakers have said the episode is amongst the most embarrassing for the chamber that has seen many scandals. The extraordinary session will hold on Friday June 15, 2012, the Clerk of the House, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, said in a message to lawmakers on Wednesday. “Honourable members are advised to take note and attend promptly please,” he said. Otedola was quizzed by police investigators on Tuesday. Sources have said he may not be charged; instead, may provide a witness account against Lawan when the lawmaker is eventually charged. Lawan is likely to be asked to resign his position from the committee pending investigation by the House and the law enforcement agencies. The House has said in an earlier statement it will not defend the lawmaker is found culpable. “While we await investigation into these weighty accusations, we wish to state without equivocation that this honourable House will never take sides with corruption and we will always stand on the side of the rule of law,” said Zakari Muhammed, the House spokesperson. ...Source... |
Court grants EFCC leave to arraign Hembe He and the Vice Chair of the House Committee on Capital Market will stand trial for misappropriation of public funds Justice Abubakar Umar of an Abuja High Court, on Thursday, granted the EFCC leave to arraign Herman Hembe and Chris Azubogu, the former Chairman and Vice Chaiman of the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market and Other Financial Institutions. The EFCC had, through its Counsel, Onjekwu Obe, filed an application for leave to prefer a two-count criminal charge against the duo, under section 185 (d) of the Criminal Procedure Code. "I hereby apply for leave to prefer a criminal charge against the above named accused persons," Obe's application read. "Attached herewith are the following documents: a copy of the charge in respect of which leave is sought, and a verifying affidavit. "Others are names and addresses of the witnesses, statements of the witnesses and that of the two accused persons and other documentary evidences." Umar granted the application and said that based on the proof of evidence presented by the EFCC, Hembe and Azubogu are to be arraigned on Thursday, May 17. "The application to prefer a criminal charge against Hon. Herman Hembe and Hon. Chris Azubogu has merit," he added. Speaking to journalists, the EFCC counsel said Hembe and Azubogu would now be arraigned on May 17 on a two-count charge bordering on misappropriation of public funds. According to Obe, the EFCC investigations revealed that Hembe and Azubogu were the two key actors in the N44 million fraud allegation rocking the House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market and Other Institutions. He added that investigations also revealed that the two had confessed that they did not attend a workshop in the Dominican Republic, for which they collected money from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to Obe, the confession came on the day the EFCC launched a probe into the N30 million hotel bill allegedly incurred by SEC’s Director-General, Arunma Oteh. "EFCC has enough evidence to present to court and is ready to begin its case," Obe said. Source. |

Lagos State sacks all striking doctors Over 1,000 doctors have been let go The crisis rocking the Lagos State health sector took a dangerous twist on Monday, when the state government sacked over 1,000 doctors in its employ. Doctors in state-owned hospitals, under the aegis of the Medical Guild, began an indefinite strike on April 24, 2012, to press for the downward review of taxes and the full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS), and other demands. Confirming the development, the secretary of the Medical Guild, Idris Durojaiye, said the information was passed across to the doctors through the medical directors of the various state hospitals. "The medical directors signed the letters," he said. However, the doctors will be holding a press conference to decide their next line of action. Last month, the state government announced that it had started recruiting new doctors to help alleviate the plight of residents seeking medical care in state-owned hospitals. Source |
