PoliticsSule Lamido Sets Eye On Presidency by prettyG(op): 7:26am On Jun 24, 2013
Despite that record, Lamido has garnered a surfeit of top-ranking endorsements for the nation’s top job in 2015. While he has all but launched a campaign, he is one of the few potential candidates whose posters have been on display in parts of Abuja and other states.

His highest rating yet came nearly a month ago after former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, snubbed a Democracy Day event hosted by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, for a similar event in Dutse, Jigawa state capital, where he highlighted Lamido’s achievements.

“You can help anybody to find a job, but you cannot help anybody to do the job. In this case, we found a job for Sule Lamido; he was ready, willing, able and competent to do the job,” Obasanjo said.

The former President was later quoted as saying, “When you help someone to leadership and he cannot perform, you look for another person. And I’ve found one in Lamido.” This remark was interpreted by many as a subtle message to President Jonathan concerning 2015.
BusinessMarket Fires And Their Real Damage by prettyG(op): 12:18pm On Jun 21, 2013
With both hands on his waist, and a look of horror across his face, Donatus Anurude watched two firemen, nozzles in hand, charge towards a tongue of fire ferociously licking away a heap of fairly used computers.

Within hours, the inferno, caused by an electrical fault, was contained but the damage to the Zone E wing of the Trinity Market, Apapa, Lagos State, had been done – about 202 stalls and goods worth over N500 million had been lost.
PoliticsAfrica Rising: Who Benefits? by prettyG(op): 12:07pm On Jun 21, 2013
The narrative went in the view of GPD growth translating into development, as Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly of the World Bank spoke of Africa’s GDP growing YoY at a 5% rate. This brought widespread disagreement from the audience and effectively set the ball rolling. The murmuring didn’t however deter George Onafowakan from speaking about the successes he has had managing Coleman Wires and Cables. Even though he said he was spending over N200 million on power generation (i.e generators) alone, he didn’t fail to stress his company’s over 500% growth since its inception. According to him, businesses all over were growing because the opportunities were there despite the need for quality innovation. This, however, did not go down too well with a Mr. Olumide, a member of the audience who runs a bar in the heart of Lagos. Olumide pointed out that very few Nigerians, especially the SMEs, could muster such capital to provide personal infrastructure to keep their businesses running.

EducationRival Cults Hold Talks In UNIBEN by prettyG(op): 3:38pm On Jun 18, 2013
Calm is gradually returning to the University of Benin. From what I have been told, most members of the warring secret cults have gone into hiding after attacks in the past few days.

The popular Guest House of the University of Benin, which usually plays host to students who wish to relax, was empty on Saturday and Sunday. A waiter, who requested anonymity, complained that they have witnessed a serious drop in revenue because the students are scared.

This has been the biggest cult war that the institution has witnessed recently, and while the officially confirmed death toll is six, rumours have it that the true toll is more like twenty-two.

On June 14, a 200 level Mathematics student, Uche Emmanuel Alajemba, popularly known as Snazzy, was shot in the head. The incident happened at the University’s Sports Complex during a biometrics registration exercise. According to eyewitnesses, the shooter calmly dropped the gun afterwards and walked into the crowd before he could be identified.

"I made attempts to speak with members of both rival gangs and was able to attract the attention of a member (he claimed to be an official) of the confraternity who opted to speak on condition of anonymity.

The Official said that the rival groups are currently in negotiations to address the issue and that all other things being equal, they should resolve the issues in the coming days. According to The Official, himself and his executive members are not in support of a war between the two factions and that they would do everything possible to resolve the crisis soon.

He also stated that the members of the confraternity who initiated the crisis would be sanctioned, and if found culpable of inciting the crisis, they would be dealt with.

Silence in the ivory tower

The University of Benin has taken on a sombre mood and Ehis, an Electrical Engineering student, hopes that lasting solutions would be found to the recurrent crisis of cult clashes within the university, so students who are not affiliated to any of these cult groups can continue their studies unhindered."

Latest events

Despite The Official’s claims, the battle is not showing signs of abating. Governor Oshiomhole’s recent ban on the use of commercial motorcycles in large swathes of Edo state has been interpreted in some quarters as an attempt to reduce the violence. As of the time of writing, locals say that 10 arrests have been made by the police, the latest being a policeman who’s name the police have so far refused to release. A short conversation with DSP Moses Eguavoen, the state’s police spokesman confirmed that indeed some people have been arrested, but no names were given.

In their official reaction though, the police in Edo state say that measures have been put in place to stop the violence. Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, said that the Police is collaborating with the Management of the University of Benin to curb the menace in and around the campus.

“We are not relaxing at all. We are in search of the leaders behind these killings. Already, we have arrested some persons in connection with the crisis while others are on the run. The killings will stop because policemen are all on the alert now,” Adebanjo said. “All security agencies in the state are concerned. The governor is equally concerned and residents of the state are concerned. So, we will not relent in stopping this madness. It is very sad that people no longer value human lives; it is sad.”

The school authority is yet to issue an official statement about the incident(s), and attempts to speak with the Public Relations Officer of the University of Benin, Harrison Osarenren, have so far proved abortive.

PoliticsGunmen Kill 7 In Yobe by prettyG(op): 3:21pm On Oct 20, 2012
Seven persons were reportedly killed on Saturday in Potiskum, Yobe State. The deceased persons include a former Area Comptroller of Nigeria Custom Service, Waziri Ajiya, and his son Dr. Ibrahim Waziri, as well as a retired ASP of Police, Mohammed Haruna, his wife and three children. Haruna and his family were killed at Sabon Layi area of Potiskum, after gunmen trailed him to his house.

Ajiya and his son were both shot dead in a forest along Gombe road after they were abducted from their residence in Nahuta Quarters, Potiskum, the state capital. Patrick Egbuniwe, the state commissioner of Police, confirmed the killings. "The hoodlums are trying to adopt the same operation like the one they did in Damaturu which we stopped," he said.

The commissioner said efforts were being made to track the assailants, adding that the force had restrategised in order to curtail serial killings in the state. A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the gunmen stormed Ajiya's house at about 1:30 a.m., kidnapped him and his son and took them to a forest along Gombe road where they were killed.

"His family communicated to us around 2:00 a.m. that some gunmen kidnapped Waziri and Ibrahim," the source said.

The source further revealed that the Comptroller mistook the assailants for security operatives that were conducting search, and came out to enquire for their mission when he was kidnapped. "He pleaded with them to allow him talk to his son, instead they took the son with them when they confirmed that he was a medical doctor," he said.

The deceased persons were laid to rest according to Islamic rites around 12 p.m.

PoliticsNnaji's Power Plant Opens For Business by prettyG(op): 11:22am On Oct 16, 2012
Geometric Power Systems Limited has announced that its 140 megawatts (MW) Aba Integrated Power Project (IPP) will come on stream in the first quarter of 2013.

With a financial outlay of about $500 million, the project which is expected to come on stream between January and February 2013, will, according to the project managers, guarantee steady electricity to the industrial city of Aba and its environs.

A management team from the firm, comprising the Project Manager, Group Five of South Africa, Johan Riekert; Project Manager Pauwels/EMO Africa, Slobodan Bajkovic; and Project Manager, ABB/GEC Power Lines, Joseph Otejere, stated that the first phase of the power project is nearing completion.

“This is an integrated power project because it has a power plant and distribution network where we also have sub-stations, power line as well as gas pipeline all embedded in the project,” said Riekert. “Phase one of the project has 140MW and phase two is 540MW which is to serve as additional unit to the existing one while the phase three is 100MW which will be come later.”

The project team also explained that Aba has three sub-stations and that sufficient electricity could not be delivered to the people because of inadequate evacuation infrastructure. This, they said, informed the decision to build another sub-station to complement the existing ones in Osisioma, Factory Road and Port Harcourt Road.

PoliticsBPE Announces Buyers For Power Plants by prettyG(op): 2:39pm On Sep 25, 2012
Power Plants Buyers Named

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has announced the preferred bidders for five power generation plants as part of its plans to privatise Nigeria's electricity sector.

Making the announcement at a ceremony in Abuja, the BPE revealed that a consortium, which includes Transcorp, was the highest bidder for the Ughelli Power company, offering $300 million.

Geregu Power plant was won by a bid of $132 million which was made by a group that includes Forte Oil, a petrol firm majority-owned by billionaire oil tycoon Femi Otedola.

Bolanle Onagoruwa, the BPE's Director-General, who gave assurances of the Bureau's commitment to international best practices the opening of the financial bids for the sale of five electricity generation companies, said that eight companies bided for the generation companies located in Geregu, Ughelli, Sapele, Shiroro and Kainji.

BPE paid two local television stations to transmit the event live in order to bolster public and investor confidence in the privatisation exercise, which had been trailed by controversy.

According to the BPE DG, three bidders; Feniks Electricity, Transcorp and Wood Rock/Symbion Power/Medea/PSL/Thomasen and Amperion Power Distribution Ltd, were deemed qualified by the NCP for Ughelli Power Plc.

For Sapele Power Plc, CMEC/EURAFRIC Energy and JBN-Nestoil Power Services were the bidders, while Amperion Power Distribution Ltd emerged for Geregu Power Plc. Also Mainstream Energy Solutions bidded for the Kainji Power Plc while North-South Power was listed for Shiroro Power Plc.

On Afam Power Plc, the sixth generation company put up for sale, the privatisation agency said no bidder was technically qualified for the company.

The World Bank, USAID, Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) sent observers to the event which was also observed by representatives of the EFCC and the ICPC.
