Popular actor, Wale Akorede, 50, popularly known as Okunnu, may have been in the movie industry for over two decades but he would never forget the day he earned his first pay as an actor.

In a chat with Saturday Beat, he said that he was so happy the day he was paid 60 kobo after a movie role and that he almost ran mad. The comic actor told Saturday Beat that the money he was paid motivated him to focus more on his craft and put in more efforts to be the best on the job.

“The first time I received money for acting was in 1984 and I was paid 60 kobo. When I was given the money, I almost ran mad. I was very impressed and encouraged to do the job; presently, I earn well for most of the roles I play,” he said.

Also speaking on what makes him look younger than his age, said, “God is the one who strengthens me; I don’t eat much but I take multivitamins to take care of myself.”

Okunnu is known for his comical roles in Yoruba movies, but the veteran said that despite being known for comical movies, he didn’t feel caged by such roles.

“I don’t feel stereotyped by playing such roles because I can still take up any role. I have played all sorts of roles in movies. But the funny thing is that even when I do serious roles, people still laugh because of the stereotype,” he said with a smile.


Okunnu also shared with Saturday Beat the reason why he would never stop acting. According to him, acting runs through his veins, and despite the challenges of life, he can never feel downcast.

“I am always happy; I don’t allow challenges to weigh me down. I loved acting as a child but my parents were not in support of it. I started full-time acting after my father died. I even ran away from home several times because I wanted to be on location. My mother gave me her full support when she started seeing me on screen.

“I used to be a proper businessman before, but acting runs through my veins. The field of business is a playground for me but there is no other profession I would rather do than this. Acting is my destiny,” he told Saturday Beats.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Thursday said 560 people had so far lost their lives to killings by Fulani herdsmen over the past eight months.

The governor further said that half of five local government areas in the state had been sacked by the assailants within the period.

Ortom stated that the affected local government areas include Makurdi, Gwer West, Guma, Logo and Kwande.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Tahav Agerzua, the governor said the attacks on several communities across the state were beyond grazing crisis but rather the continuation of the 1804 conquest and the occupation agenda of Jihadists.

Ortom, who solicited support for his re-election, said his first term was characterised by several challenges which included lack of funds resulting to non-payment of salaries, natural disaster and insecurity.

He insisted that the attackers had found collaborators in some of the leaders in the state, who the governor claimed had vowed to remove him from office by all means.

The statement said, “Governor Samuel Ortom revealed that more than 560 people had been killed by Fulani herdsmen while half of Gwer West, Makurdi, Guma, Logo and Kwande local government areas have been sacked by the attackers since January, 2018.

“The governor appeals to other aspirants to shun violence as they solicit the mandate of the people, because peace should be the ultimate desire of everyone.”

A 32-year-old sales boy, Saidu Abdullahi, has been arrested by the police for allegedly burgling his boss’ shop and carting away property valued at N229,000.

Abdullahi allegedly stole a generator, a home theatre, a television, a stabiliser, a cable TV decoder, a CD player with speakers, and three cartons of non-alcoholic wines.

Our correspondent learnt that the suspect had lied to his boss, Sandra Ibeh, that he was travelling to his hometown to see his mother who was sick.

In her statement to the police, Ibeh said she paid Abdullahi N10,500 out of the two months’ salaries she owed him to enable him to travel.

“I promised to send the balance of his salary to his bank account the following day. I called him to confirm if he had got home safely and he told me he was home.

“On August 16 when I got to my shop, I discovered that it had been burgled with some of my property carted away. I went to report at the police station.

“I was advised to go to Ladipo Market where they sell fairly-used property, which I did. I saw some property similar to my own and I went to inform the police. The man I saw the property with was arrested,” she added.

The businessman who was arrested in connection with the theft, Abubakar Yakubu, said he assisted in the arrest of Abdullahi.

He said, “I used to buy recharge cards from Abdullahi. Through that he collected my phone number. He called me one day that he had some property to sell.

“I did not know anything until the police came to my shop and a woman pointed at the generator I put up for sale. The police arrested me and took the generator and three other generators.

“I then remembered that he once told me that he wanted to sell some property. I called him to ask where he was and he told me that he was in GRA.

“I went there and he took me to where he kept the property. I told him that I wanted to go and call the person that would buy them. I called the police and he was arrested and the goods were recovered.”

Abdullahi was arraigned before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court on two counts of burglary and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the police prosecutor, Abiola Adewale, the offences contravened sections 309 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The magistrate, W.A. Salami, granted the suspect bail in the sum of N80,000 with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned till September 11, 2018.

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Imo State have arrested an alleged notorious cultist and killer, Chijioke Ogbonna, also known as Ogbotiti.

Ogbotiti, while being paraded by the police last Saturday, told newsmen that he had killed three persons since he was initiated into the confraternity in 2014.

The 23-year-old undergraduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, said his resolve to seek revenge led him into killing three persons, one of whom was a member of a rival cult group.

Ogbotiti, who is an indigene of Umuejije, Isialangwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, explained that his main weapon was a locally-made gun.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, Andrew Enwerem, described the suspect as a deadly cultist and armed robber, adding that Ogbotiti was nabbed by F-SARS operatives on August 19 at Ama-Hausa in the Owerri Municipal area of the state capital.

Enwerem said the police had been on the trail of the suspect since 2014 for his alleged roles in other criminal activities.

The police spokesman said, “The suspect, a strong member of , confessed to the crimes. He mentioned their gang members, nicknamed as Efizy, Ikalika,Shinshi, Bulldog, Baggy, Sky, now in Owerri Prison and X-money killed in an operation.

“He also confessed that they were the gang that killed one Michael, a student of Nekede Polytechnic, in 2015. In the same year, they killed one Mgbele on Douglas Road in Owerri and one Ifeanyi, a student of Nekede Polytechnic, in 2015.

“He confessed that they had killed so many people and had been on the run when he learnt he was being hunted by F-SARS operatives. Also, last year in Owerri, upon information that he was being trailed by the police, he jumped down from a two-storey building while receiving treatment in a private hospital for multiples bullets injuries.”
