GistMore.com There was mild drama on Tuesday in Ajah, Lagos, as a young girl resisted intimidation from a tricyclist who made her lose her N100 worth of sachet water stock. Trouble started after the reckless driver hit her with his tricycle, spilling her goods on the road. The girl, however, tracked him down and demanded a refund, but the man threatened to slap her. Unfazed by the threat, the victim dared him and assured him of receiving enough slaps returns, should he make good his threat. The matter was eventually resolved by a passerby who refunded the girl. GistMore.com The European Union Observation Mission to Nigeria says soldiers barred them from monitoring elections in Rivers State. The observers made the allegation in their preliminary report in Abuja on Monday. Addressing journalists, the Chief Observer, Maria Arena, noted that they came to Nigeria on the invitation of INEC to monitor the elections and make recommendations. Arena, who is a member of the EU Parliament, however, faulted the elections. She said, “Observers, including EU observers, were denied access to collation centres in Rivers, apparently by military personnel. This lack of access for observers compromises transparency and trust in the process. “In Rivers, INEC suspended until further notice the elections due to violence in polling units and collation centres, staff being taken hostage and election materials, including results sheets, seized or destroyed by unauthorised persons. “There is no doubt that the electoral process there was severely compromised.” Arena lamented the violence, underage voting and vote-buying that marred the governorship and House of Assembly elections in some states. She said the EU deployed 73 observers following voting, counting and the collation of results in 22 states. The chief observer said they monitored 223 polling units in 81 collation centres. Arena added, “Although election operations improved, the elections were also marked by an overall low turnout and violence, including against election officials and voters. “However, at eight polling units observed, we saw indications of vote-buying. Eight cases of obvious underage voting were also observed. Our observers saw that the counting of ballots transparent overall. “Positively, in almost all cases, party agents received copies of the result forms, although they were often not displayed. The environment for these elections has been difficult, with cases of violence and intimidation, including attacks on election administration officials.” She stressed the need for electoral reforms in the country, adding that the problems evident in the 2019 electoral process had shown that there was a need for an inclusive national discussion on reforms for greater electoral integrity and participation. Arena also noted misuse of power of incumbency by the governors of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic a Party on state-owned media houses. She added, “While there can be many reasons for a low turnout, and it is not for me to speculate, it is surely disappointing that overall, only a relatively small portion of what is by far and away Africa’s largest electorate actually cast a vote on both election days. We hope that after these elections, parties and institutions look at what is needed to make voters want to take part in elections.” Also speaking the Deputy Chief Observer, Hannah Roberts, criticised INEC for not providing specific information on the cancellation of votes in the February 23 elections. She said, “While this number did not affect the outcome given the margin of win, this was not a good process. INEC did not provide sufficient information on these cancellations, the specific reasons for them, and the precise local government areas affected. This undermines public confidence in the process.” See more here; http://gistmore.com/soldiers-stopped-us-from-monitoring-rivers-polls-eu-observers Lalasticlala

GistMore.com An 80-year-old woman has enrolled for Primary One at Jesus is King Nursery and Primary School in Bugandalo Village, Ibulanku Sub-county in Bugweri District, with an aim of becoming a teacher. Ms Maria Obonyo, a farmer, on Monday said after enduring a lot of ‘suffering and ridicule’, she decided to go to school to learn how to speak and write in English. “I decided to enrol at the school because I lost all my relatives and there was nobody to take care of me. I am determined to study until I graduate from Makerere University as a teacher,” she told Daily Monitor. Should Ms Obonyo complete her school cycle, she will be 96 by then. Ms Obonyo, however, says she currently faces a myriad of challenges, notably being unable to meet her school fees amounting to Shs35,000 per term. “I also need a better structure to sleep in because I am currently staying with the village LC1 chairman, Mr Twaha Magero,” she says. According to Mr Magero, Ms Obonyo’s decision to enrol for Primary One at such an age is an eye-opener to her agemates and those who had dropped out of school to resume. The director of the school, Ms Stella Tayona, says Ms Obonyo enrolled at her school in Baby Class in 2015 and graduated from Top Class last year. “She is a hardworking pupil who never misses classes and is social to fellow classmates,” Ms Tayona says, adding that the school currently foots most of her basic scholastic requirements although she is seeking help from well-wishers. The school’s head teacher, Ms Olivia Kwagala, says Ms Obonyo has made the school proud by studying at such an age and is confident she will complete Primary Seven. “She is also so eager to learn how to append her signature on a document,” Ms Kwagala adds. GistMore.com Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Sunday Nwankwo and two employees of an oil and gas merchant, AguIzu Chukwu, 19, and Tunde Olaewo, 21, for allegedly planning to kidnap their boss, one Solomon Otungo, in the Ejigbo area of the state. The state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Mu’azu, said at a press briefing, on Thursday, that the command mobilised operatives to arrest the suspects at their meeting point, after it received credible intelligence about the alleged plan to kidnap the oil and gas merchant. He added that the suspects confessed to the crime and said they would have demanded a ransom of N60m from Otungo if their plan had succeeded. Mu’azu said, “The police received credible intelligence received that some newly-employed workers of one Solomon Otungo, an oil and gas merchant in the Bucknor area of Ejigbo, Lagos, were holding nocturnal meetings on how they would kidnap and keep their employer incommunicado until a ransom of N60m was paid. “Based on the information, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ejigbo Police Station, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, mobilised police detectives and stormed the venue of the meeting, where AguIzu Chukwu, 19, and Tunde Olaewo, 21, were rounded up and brought to the station. “The confessional statements of the suspects led to the arrest of one Sunday Nwankwo in the Isolo area of the state. The suspects have confessed to the crime and added that had their plan succeeded, they would have demanded N60m ransom from the businessman’s family.” The CP added that the suspects would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation. Mu’azu also paraded a security guard, who allegedly abandoned his duty post to steal an unregistered Lexus 330 SUV from where it was parked on Power-line Avenue, Meiran, Lagos State. The CP, who said operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad arrested the man Yusuf Jubril, who was guarding the street where the SUV was parked by its owner, one Yusuf Jubril, added that the guard confessed to have stolen the car with the help of one Ibrahim, who is still at large. Mu’azu stated, “On Monday, February 11, 2019, around 9.30pm, information was received from a member of the public that an unregistered Lexus 330 SUV was stolen from where it was parked on Power-line Avenue, Meiran, Lagos. “Based on the information, SARS operatives attached to the Onilekere base mobilised to the scene and arrested a security man guarding the street where the car was initially parked, one Yusuf Jubril. “During interrogation, he (Jubril) confessed to have stolen the car with the help of one Ibrahim, who is now at large. He later led operatives to the Ago Palace Way area of Okota in the state, where he displayed the car for sale. It was subsequently recovered.” The CP added that investigation was ongoing with a view to arresting the fleeing Ibrahim. The command has also apprehended a 31-year-old man, Ahmed Lukmon, of No. 5 Olubuade Street, Amukoko area of the state for alleged involvement in armed robbery. Lukmon was said to have been picked up following a stop and search operation by a team of policemen on Tuesday around 2pm at the Amukoko junction. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Chike Oti, said in a statement, on Thursday, that the operatives also recovered one locally-made double-barrelled shotgun with one unexpended and two expended cartridges from the suspect. He said, “The Lagos State Police Command arrested a suspected armed robber, Ahmed Lukmon, 31, on February 19 around 2pm during a stop and search operation by a team of policemen at the Amukoko junction, Amukoko area of Lagos. “The police recovered one locally-made double-barrelled shotgun with one unexpended and two expended cartridges from the suspect.” He added that investigation was in progress on the case.
