A man has raised alarm after he spotted some men using Sniper as a pesticide to kill weevils in beans.

Sniper is known to be a very dangerous insecticide that should be used outdoors and should never come in contact with food.

But, in a bid to make profit, the beans sellers used it to ensure their beans stays weevil-free.

The young man who saw them said he has seen this happen multiple times at Iddo market but they never listen to him whenever he challenges their unscrupulous practice. He wrote;

Short of words! Snippers as preservatives? I actually saw these a couple of times at iddo market.

I challenged them severally,but hey am just an individual who is ready to eat clean.

What we buy from the open market isn’t monitored by any regulatory body here in Nigeria,in short Africa.

Just sick and tired of all these.

A call has gone to the Federal Government to come to the aide of people of Egbebiri Community of Biseni clan in Yenagoa Local Government area in Bayelsa State whose farmlands and sources of drinking water have been destroyed by crude oil spilt from a Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) flow station.

The call was made by the founder of a community-based organisation known as Egbebiri Livelihood, Environment and Development Initiative (ELEDI), Lucky Bennett, in Yenagoa.
Speaking to newsmen, he said the spill which occurred on the 22nd October 2018 has wrecked more havoc than any of its kind because the recent flood carried the crude to residential areas contaminating their source of drinking water.

Explaining further, he called on National Emergency Management Agency to urgently put measures in place that prevent the people of the area from suffering any form of hazard as a result of the spill as they plan to relocate to the community after the flood recedes.

Speaking further, he said “the facility where the spill occurred is owned by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company, in Egbebiri land. The facility is known as Idu Wells in location 5 and 11. The whole town is littered with crude oil.

“And because the spill occurred during the flood season, water carried the crude into our rivers and wells we fetch drinking water from. Our people use river water for drinking, cooking and other domestic uses like bathing. And that shows how dangerous it is to our health, as indigenes of Egbebiri.
“We are appealing to the federal government through NEMA to help us provide alternative sources of drinking water as our people plan to relocate to their home after the flood recedes completely.”
According to Ogiama Solomon, a farmer from the community ‘’the oil spill happened around 5:00 am on Monday, 22nd October 2018 and officials of NAOC went and put it off about 2:30 pm the same day.

“The Joint Investigation Visit [JIV] has been conducted and the cause of the spill was identified as equipment failure, with over 200 barrels of crude oil spewed and spread over an area of 5,420 meters in the community.
“And since after the JIV was conducted, Agip is yet to do anything to clean up the spill site. They have not also gone to see what can be done about the crude that was carried by the flood into our community.”

The bullied Nigerian model who disclosed that she has always wanted to be a model as a child, disclosed that most of the times she cried, was so frustrated and felt she couldn’t fit in after getting mocked even by close friends.

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Imo State Police Command, have arrested a serving policeman, Chibuike Omego, and two others for alleged involvement in armed robbery.

The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, said the cop and two others – Ebuka Nwosu and Anayo Zeigbo – were arrested between October 31 and November 2 in Enugu and Bayelsa states, respectively.

The CP stated that the suspects were tracked down by the F-SARS operatives for robbing the driver of a serving Chief Magistrate, Chika Ezerioha, in Imo State.

The CP, who spoke with Southern City News on Sunday, said, “At Uwani in Enugu State, and Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, from October 31 till November 2, F-SARS operatives, coordinated by its Commander, Godfrey Victor, arrested one serving policeman, Omego Chibuike, 24.

“He was serving at the Ogui Police Station in Enugu State before his arrest. The other suspects are Nwosu Ebuka, 25, of Uwani Police Barrack in Enugu State, and Anayo Zeigbo from Enugu State, but resident in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

“They were arrested in connection with a case of armed robbery. It is important to note that on October 6, 2016, at Egbeada by Nkoromi filling station near the flyover in Imo State, one Robert Ekeh, a driver to Chief Magistrate Chika Ezerioha, was robbed at gunpoint and his Toyota Avenza car, golden colour, with registration number: IMSJ 148, was taken away.

“The suspects have confessed to their involvement in the crime. Upon recovery and in order to evade arrest, the car registration number was changed to MUS 986 FK. Effort is on to arrest one Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operative, who is one of the main suspects.”

Galadanchi stated that the investigation, which spanned over two years before the suspects were arrested, was an indication that the community policing strategies of the Inspector General of Police being implemented by his command were effective.

“If we can arrest one of our own in connection with a crime, that means that nobody is above the law. We are committed to crime fighting and making sure that the Yuletide season is crime-free in Imo State,” the CP added.

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to attend to the needs of Nigerians, instead of donating money to other countries.

Wondering why a country whose leaders planned to sell its national assets would be donating money, Atiku, in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Sunday, urged Buhari and his cabinet to be more prudent with the nation’s resources.

The former Vice President said that Nigeria’s resources should be used for the benefit of its people and not for other countries.

He noted that the President recently promised to donate the sum of $500,000 to Guinea Bissau, along with other materials.

Atiku said, “Our response is to ask why a nation that has been officially named as the world headquarters of extreme poverty, will donate her resources to others instead of using them to solve pressing domestic problems?


“This is the same government that is so cash strapped that it has so far borrowed N13tn in three years.

“How prudent is it to go about taking loans from whosoever cares and then turn around to give out the money when your own people are suffering the worst form of poverty?

“We call on the Muhammadu Buhari administration to cut its coat according to its cloth. He should stop donating like Father Christmas. He should attend to the need of Nigerians”

The former Vice President said that, having been part of a government that paid off Nigeria’s entire foreign debt in the past, there was no way he would pretend to be unconcerned with the way Bubari was “running the country.”

A 31-year-old nursing mother, Maryam Adamu, on Wednesday dragged her former husband Nuhu Abubakar to a Sharia Court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna over his alleged failure to cater for their five children.

The complainant who is a resident of Barnawa told the court that Abubakar had divorced her during fasting in May while pregnant and had not fulfilled his fatherly responsibilities ever since.

“He stopped caring for me and my children after the divorce. We are now being threatened to move out of the rented house I live with my children for failing to pay rent,” she lamented.

She prayed to the court to compel the defendant to be a responsible father also issue her with a divorce certificate.

The defendant, also residing at Barnawa, however, denied the claim of not catering for the children, adding that his former wife forced him to divorce her by threatening to see his end if he refuses.

The complainant also countered his submission, saying she had been taking care of the children education even before the divorce.

The judge, Musa Sa’ad-Goma, after listening to both parties ruled that Abubakar from now on would provide shelter, food, clothing and school fees of the five children.

“Divorcing your wife doesn’t mean you should forget your children, you still remain their father and you must take care of them”, the judge ruled.

A week after the arrival of her new baby boy, 67-year old Mrs Ajibola Otubusin has christened her boy and named him Shalom Oluwatomilola Otubusin.

Baby Otubusin was conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer procedure at the St Ives IVF & Fertility Center and was delivered at Atoke Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday October 20.

The elated mother thus broke all records not only as the oldest Nigerian woman to give birth through IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), she also the oldest African in recorded history to give birth to a baby, and becoming the second oldest mum in the world.

The child’s christening was held at Deeper Life Secretariat, White House, Leme, Abeokuta, where well-wishers, clerics, family members and friends joined the 70-year-old father of the baby, Prof. Samuel Otubusin and his wife to celebrate what they termed “God’s faithfulness.”

Prof. Otubusin, who retired recently from Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, while giving his testimony before the congregation, said God had given him the baby’s names since May 10, 1982.

He equally told the congregation how his wife went from one hospital to another both in Nigeria and India in search of the fruit of the womb, adding that despite all her wife went through, she was attacked spiritually many times during pregnancy.

He said, “Our story is as simple as A, B, C and D. It all started in 1977. Just yesterday, isn’t it?

“Despite all the major health issues she had before the pregnancy, my wife suffered several spiritual attacks. And thank God, we are always together and we are prayer partners.

“The best prayer partner you should have is your wife. So, each time she experienced the attack, we would pray together. To God be the glory, at the point of delivery, she didn’t take a single drop of blood.”

Otubusin insisted that the baby’s arrival after 39 years in marriage was not by accident rather, “fulfillment of God’s promise.”

In his sermon titled “Children Are The Heritage Of God”, Pastor Idowu Agida described the baby as a miracle baby and urged the parents to always give him godly training.

He said, “Medical experts might have tried their best, but it’s only God that gives children. So, children are the gift from God.”

The cleric saluted the old couple, who according to him, was determined and kept to God’s promise throughout the trying period.

After 46 years of marriage, 84-year-old man, John Olusola Ojo, who is a pastor has paid the dowry of his wife, Olabisi, who is 70 years old.

In an interview with Tribune, Pastor Ojo said he decided to honor his wife by going to pay her dowry in September, years after her family initially disagreed on their union.

Going down memory lane, Pastor Ojo said when he met Olabisi during his youth, he was very poor and also had come from a poor family background. Olabisi on the other hand, was from a priviledged home. At the time they met, she was living with her Uncle who was grooming her for one of his colleagues who worked as a driver at the Nigeria Railway Corporation. He said;

“When all persuasions to make my in-laws accept their daughter’s bride price from me failed, the General Superintendent of the Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria, advised us to go by statutory marriage through which we were certified as husband and wife in 1972. Few years into our marriage, my in-laws had a change of heart; since then we have maintained a good rapport,”

Pa Ojo says they lived so happily that his in-laws forgot to ask him for the dowry of their daughter.

On her part, Mrs Ojo said she agreed to stick with her husband at the time when he as poor because she knew she could afford to take care of the him.

“I knew I could take care of him, I concluded so because my parents were financially buoyant – my mother was a produce buyer while my father was a commercial farmer. But to my people, he was poor beyond redemption, they called him ‘one-man-one-jacket.’ It took much pacification before I was allowed to marry him. I thank God for his mercy on both of us, our children inclusive for whom we have become today. I have to thank Him especially for His special kindness to me.

Up till this moment, I have never had any cause to regret that I married my husband. Most especially, I am grateful to God that I am also among those women who were married traditionally; appreciating me before my people by paying my dowry. I am indeed happy that it happened to me,” she enthused.

The police in Lagos have arrested an 18-year-old barber, Bakare Ismail, for allegedly defiling his neighbour, a 14-year-old girl.

Ismail had reportedly lured the girl, Bidemi (pseudonym), to his parents’ residence on Banjo Street, Owutu in the Ikorodu area of the state on Saturday, October 13, around 4pm.

While the victim was seated, Ismail allegedly offered her a soft drink laced with a sedative. She was said to have slept off minutes after taking the drink.

Saturday PUNCH leant that the suspect had sex with Bidemi, who reportedly woke up to find bloodstains on her pants.

The incident was reported at the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja.

The victim told the police that she was running an errand for her aunt when Ismail, who lives in the next compound, approached her and demanded to have a talk with her.

She said she went back to him after delivering the message her aunt sent her.

“While I was in his apartment, he offered me a soft drink which I drank. As we were talking, I did not know when I slept off. When I woke up, I saw bloodstains on my clothes. I rushed home to change my clothes.

“I was crying because I knew my aunt would punish me if she knew I had been raped.”

However, the suspect denied committing the crime, adding that he did not give Bidemi any drink that day.

“I was not at home throughout that day. My dad was not around either.He locked up the house before he left. So, I did not have sex with her. She was lying,” he added.

Our correspondent learnt that the victim was taken to Mirabel Centre in Ikeja, where a test conducted on her reportedly revealed that there was a laceration in her private parts.

Ismail was consequently brought before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court by a police prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuehi, on one count of defilement.

The charge read, “That you, Bakare Ismail, on October 13, 2018, at 1600hrs, on Banjo Street, Owutu, Ikorodu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully defile a 14-year-old girl, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule-Hamzat, did not take the plea of the defendant.

She held that he be remanded in prison custody and the case file forwarded to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The case was adjourned till December 20, 2018.
