A speeding Sports Utility Vehicle on Wednesday hit and crushed a 17-year-old secondary school girl to death on her way to school.


It was gathered that the student of the Community Secondary School, Rumuapara, was hurrying to school when the incident happened.


One of the victim’s guardians, Michael Anyanwu, told our correspondent that the girl was hit by the speeding car while attempting to cross the road around 8.05am.


Anyanwu added that after the girl was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital where she was confirmed dead.


He said, “A doctor at the hospital said they checked her and pronounced her dead and there was nothing more they could do for her.”


When contacted, the spokesman for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident.

Tragedy struck in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Tuesday, after fleeing gunmen shot and killed two siblings.


The victims, Ifeanyi Anyanwu, 47, and Tochukwu Anyanwu, 45, were shot dead at the back gate of the Imo State University, Owerri.


Our correspondent gathered that two other persons, Kasim Rashidi, 22, and Salam Rashidi, 20, who were with the deceased were also shot, but rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where they were admitted.


Our correspondent gathered that while Ifeanyi was an architect, his younger brother, Tochukwu, was a surveyor.


According to sources, the deceased were natives of Umuopara Omukwu, Onicha community, in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.


A source said the brothers, until their death, were living at Plot 249 Area ‘A’ World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri.


A witness disclosed that the siblings were killed after they were robbed of their ash coloured Ford Edge car, with number plate, BWR 809 BC.
The source said, “The deceased were living at Plot 249 Area ‘A’ World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri.


“They were robbed of their car and shot dead by the gunmen.


“One Salam Rashidi, aged 20, and Kasim Rashidi, aged 22, both of Okwu Uratta in Owerri North LGA, sustained gunshot injuries during the sporadic shootings.


“The corpses of the deceased have been removed and deposited at the Aladinma mortuary and the injured taken to the FMC, Owerri, for treatment.”


The state Police Public Relations Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident, adding that the command had commenced investigation.

The trial of the alleged Taraba State kidnap kingpin , Hamisu Bala, otherwise known as Wadume, will resume at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday .

Our correspondent learnt that the prosecution would , at the resumed hearing on Wednesday , present its seventh witness before Justice Binta Nyako .

This is coming after the sixth witness , Bala James , an Assistant Superintendent of Police , concluded his testimony on October 13 .
Wadume and six others are being prosecuted on 13 counts of kidnapping, escape from custody , gunrunning , detention of kidnap victim Usman Garba , and collection of ransom of N 106m from the victim before releasing him .

Apart from Wadume, the rest of the defendants are Inspector Aliyu Dadje, who was a station officer at police headquarters in Ibi , Auwalu Bala, aka Omo Razor , Uba Bala ( aka Uba Belu ); Bashir Waziri , ( aka Baba Runs ); Zubairu Abdullahi ( aka Basho ); and Rayyanu Abdul.

Wadume was first arrested in Ibi , Taraba State , by members of the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector -General of Police on August 6 , 2019 before soldiers led by Captain Tijjani Balarabe aided his escape from the custody of the policemen conveying him to Abuja .

The Captain Balarabe-led troops attached to the 93 Battalion in Takum , Taraba State , had allegedly shot at the policemen who were conveying Wadume to Abuja shortly after arresting the prime suspect in Ibi , Taraba State on August 6 , 2019 .

The soldiers were said to have killed three policemen and two civilians while five others were wounded in the attack aimed at freeing Wadume from police custody .

The Attorney - General of the Federation, Mr, Abubakar Malami ( SAN ) , removed the names of the soldiers as defendants from the case within days of taking over the case from the police in July 2020 .

Earlier testifying as the fourth prosecution witness in the case, a member of the IRT of the IGP office, Inspector Samuel Habila , said Wadume escaped with gunshot wounds to Kano after soldiers aided his escape from the police on August 6 , 2019 .
