Money Laundering: SAN Lauds Couple’s Acquittal, Seeks Criminal Justice System Review A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Louis Alozie, on Monday hailed a court judgment acquitting a couple, Mr Rowly Isioro and his wife, Ovuomarhoni, of fraud and money laundering charges. Alozie told journalist that the judgment by Justice Mojisola Dada of a Lagos high court brought to end almost two years of trial of the couple. He called for review of the criminal justice system to ensure that litigants would get justice in time and defendants wouldn’t suffer undue prosecution. Isioro, a banker, and his wife, a businesswoman, were charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with fraud and money laundering. The EFCC alleged that the couple laundered a total sum of $1.49 million through Ovuomarhoni’s bank account in Nigeria. The couple was charged on seven counts in suit number ID/10729C/19. In her judgment, Dada dismissed all the seven counts, holding that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations. The judge said that evidence before the court fell short of the quality and standard required in law to warrant conviction. According to Dada, the entirety of the case cannot stand and, therefore, fails. “It is hereby dismissed and the defendants acquitted of all the counts preferred against them,” she held. Alozie said that he was satisfied with the judgment but regretted that the couple was remanded for up to seven months. He said that the couple had undergone emotional stress and deserved much compensation. “Their acquittal is a welcome development but their detention was illegal. “These people deserve compensation for their ordeal, they were remanded between seven and nine months among other losses; sadly, there is no law to my knowledge that provides for remedy,” he said.

I am poised to provide vision and people oriented leadership grounded on sincerity of purpose. “I possess the dexterity to initiate and mobilise for the formulation and implementation of relevant policies to create the needed enabling environment,” he said. Ezenwafor, however, said that agitation in the southeast had negatively affected the campaigns ahead of the election but that they were devising other means to reach out to electorate. “The security situation in the state has affected our campaigns, the NRM campaign flag-off scheduled on Oct. 9, is cancelled due to the wave of insecurity in the state. “I am not intimidated by any political party or candidate, if you have sampled the opinions of the electorate, you will realise that they are fed up with the so-called big parties. “The so-called big parties have ruled at the centre or in the state, their performances are there for electorate to see, they are absolutely responsible for the situation we found ourselves today. “It may interest you to know that the electorate are angling for a paradigm shift in terms of political party and candidate, that is what I represent,” he said.

Ozigbo Seeks Freedom For MNK, As Soludo, Uba Boycott Debate Mr Valentine Ozigbo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Nov.6 governorship election in Anambra says the agitation and growing tension in the Southeast will best be addressed through political means. Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the debate. Ozigbo blamed the tension and insecurity on continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, an activist and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) without trial by the Federal Government. Ozigbo, a peace advocate and apostle of development politics said the Federal Government should rethink their strategy of resolving the political tension across the country especially the Southeast. He said MNK should be released by the APC led Federal Government and adopt a non-violent and diplomatic means of addressing the calls for secession. "Indeed, Nnamdi Kanu should actually be released while we go back to the root cause of the agitation, we can't be addressing a problem from the symptoms. An efficient way to address any crisis is to deal with the root cause. "Why the agitations? If you think deeply, you'll understand that it is because Nigeria is not working, our leaders have failed us. "The sense of hopelessness brought about by poor governance pervades the land, there's a lot we need to do to get Nigeria working again. "The system is replete with poor road network, decayed infrastructure, failed social systems, devastating healthcare sector, a shrinking economy, lack of opportunities, and many more manifestations of poor governance," he said. Ozigbo said there was a need for a national dialogue and restructuring of Nigeria to enthrone a just, competitive, and inclusive society. He called for the protection of the human rights of the Igbos, correction of the economic justices in the country, and a stop to the dehumanisation of the people of the Southeast and all citizens. According to him, as a way out of the current crisis, we need a fresh approach to leadership, we must focus on raising the competitiveness of the country, do away with nepotism and entrench competency. Ozigbo said he had revolutionary ideas that would transform the education, healthcare, economy, social services, and other key human development indices in Anambra. The other candidates who attended the event are Col. Geoffrey Onyejegbu (Rtd), the candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Dr Chidozie Nwankwo of the African Action Congress (AAC), and Chief Akachukwu Nwankpo of African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Relics of Ruins In Izombe, Imo Community After Nigerian Army Reign Of Terror Friday, Oct 8 was yet another black day in the Southeast geopolitical zone, Izombe, Oguta Local Government of Imo State to be precise. It was a day, soldiers of the Nigerian Army demonstrated their love for killing unarmed citizens and destruction of hard-earned property. Izombe is a sleepy agrarian and oil-bearing community where criminal gangs in active connivance and protection of security agencies had elevated oil bunkering to blossoming trade to the discomfort and detriment of the locals. Reports had it that the business relationship between soldiers on illegal duty with the criminal gangs went sour following a disagreement over modalities. Another version had it that soldiers who were also interested in the illegal business tried to outwit the civilian group using the powers conferred on them by the uniforms and AK47 which were paid for with taxpayers' money. This led to a gang fight which resulted in death on both sides. In all, three people lost their lives. The soldiers retreated to their barracks and stormed the community with about 30 Hilux trucks and three Armoured Personnel Carriers filled with troops. The rampaging soldiers who operated unfettered threw explosives into people's homes, plundered the farms, economic trees, and looted every valuable in sight. In all, not less than 50 homes including the palace of the traditional ruler of the Aborshi-Izombe community, Eze Pius Muforo were left in ruins with over 5, 000 persons displaced while over 10,000 had fled the community for fear of another attack. According to an indigene of Izombe, troops of the Nigerian Army came in more than 30 Hilux vans and three tanks threw dynamite into people's homes. "They looted valuables and cut down plantains, bananas, and other economic plants, now people of the community are homeless," he said. 48 hours after the incident, neither the Imo State Government nor authorities of the Nigerian Army had made any statement.

IZOMBE: WHEN A NATIONAL ARMY TURN ARSONISTS Yesterday, some personnel of the Nigerian Army allegedly went on rampage in Izombe, an oil rich community in Oguta LGA of Imo State, burning houses of the indigenes, shooting civilians and terrorizing the entire community. From reports gathered from petrified citizens who have fled the community, this irresponsible action of individuals paid with our taxes, to protect us and defend our unity and territorial integrity, has led to the displacement of at least 1,000 indigenes of Izombe and surrounding communities and loss of at least Two billion Naira worth of private properties. From what I have gathered, the Army personnel who instigated this crisis, were ab initio on illegal duty. For, what business do Army officers have with intervening in a confrontation between two gangs of "oil bunkerers" and "militants" fighting over control of the area? If the preponderance of information in the public domain is anything to go by, then, these Army officers, their commanders and in fact the entire unit, should be answering questions, not just for the extrajudicial killing of Izombe civilians but for an apparent complicity in bunkering and other criminal activities, usually blamed on local militants. If the Army were not complicit, what would give a supposed militant group the confidence to seek for their intervention over such matters, as have been alleged by some individuals from the area. Assuming there is any truth in the narrative that the Army came on a reprisal mission after two of their personnel were killed and their rifles stolen, we can only sympathize with the family of these deceased personnel, but not justify the roguish way, their colleagues chose to seek "justice" for their comrades. Shouldn't the difference between members of a National Armed Forces with criminals, be the former's professionalism and discipline? If the Army could resort to arson, murder and terror as tools of deterrence, how do we mark the difference between them and usual terrorists and criminals, whom, it is part of their responsibilities to protect us from? I am of the view that no level of provocation justifies the savagery visited on the people of Izombe and by no such a group but the same people who were detailed by the government and paid by the people to protect them. At a time when the public confidence on the Army, especially in the Southeast, is at its lowest ebb, one expects, not just the Army, but all members of the Armed Forces, to operate with the highest sense of restraint and professionalism. And in a situation where some bad eggs act in a way that is contrary to the operational principles of the Armed Forces, those concerned must not only be punished, but their punishment must be made a public show of. To demonstrate to the people that this is not a deliberate action by the Nigerian military to destroy Ala Igbo through State sponsored terrorism against our people, the military high command MUST not only identify those officers among them who perpetrated this heinous crime against the people of Izombe and Ndigbo, but also mete appropriate penalties to them, not in secret, but to the know of the public. This is because, nothing guarantees peace than a genuine sense of justice. Onwuasoanya FCC Jones is the Acting National Leader, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide-Youth Wing.
