He said the Hausa and Yoruba version of the competition would be held later in the year.

"This competition which will be the first in Nigeria is designed for Junior and Senior secondary school students across Nigeria.

“Oka Nsupe Igbo is the Igbo version of City Speller Bee, an initiative of Onitsha Business school which was created to promote the wide adoption of Igbo language amongst the younger generation.

Hope Rises For Resident Doctors' Estate Despite Materials Prices

Chief Daniel Orji, Managing Director of Daniel-Bob Nigeria Limited says his company was determined to help address housing shortage in Nigeria by ensuring the completion of the Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) Housing Estate Project.

Orji said while speaking on the continued increase in the price of building materials in Awka.

He said sustained increase in the prices of building materials in Nigeria was a major factor responsible for shortage in housing supply adding that the ugly trend had led many developers both private and commercial to abandon their sites.

He said most mortgage housing schemes in Nigeria had either been abandoned or suspended because of the variation in cost estimate as a result of increase in the price of building materials.

He called on the government to subsidise building materials if it intends to achieve its objective of massive housing for Nigerians.

According to him, it is difficult for people to build now, with the prices of cement and rods, it is almost impossible for the normal worker to build and own a house, that is why the cost of renting an apartment is high.

"For us in the building industry, we did our estimate at N2,200 per bag of cement but it is between N4,600 and N4,800, the same thing goes for iron rod, for instance 12mm was N1,800 when we started but now it is N4,200.

"A trip of 30tons granite was 180,000, now we buy it for N300,000; a trip of sand that was the. N12,000 is now N35,000 while a piece of block that was N140 is now N300.

"For masons, we used to pay them N4,000 per day but it is now N6,000.

"So, it is clear that there is a problem in the housing sector, government must come in and save the situation by coming up with measures to control and reduce the cost of building materials.

"For us at Daniel Bob, we are ensuring that we deliver our promise to build a functional estate for Resident Doctors, that is why work is going on steadily," he said.

Orji however said that the NARD Housing Estate being handled by his company was progressing in spite of the challenge to the integrity of the company.

He expressed fears that both commercial and private builders may abandon their company if the federal government does not intervene and check inflation in building materials.

Orji said Federal Government should grant waiver on building materials, expand the scope of supply of cement and activate Ajaokuta Steel Mill to encourage local sourcing of iron rods

"It is impossible for the average worker who earns between N80,000 and N150,000 monthly to build and own a decent house at the prices of materials, this is what is putting pressure on the existing accomodation and causing hike in rent prices.

"Now we rely on one company for cement, the supply of cement should be increased, people should be able to have options and our Steel Mill should be made functional ," he said.

According to Dr Uyilawa Okhuaibesuyi, the immediate past president of NARD, who spoke at the groundbreaking last year, the housing scheme was in partnership with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and Daniel-Bob Nigeria Ltd.

He said about 4,000 members across the country were target to help own their houses through the mortgage system adding that it would check the continued brain drain in the health sector.

The houses would be in four variants including 3-bedroom terrace, 3-bedroom semi detached duplex, 4- bedroom semi detached and 4-bedroom fully detached all with boys quarters, the area measuring about 15 hectares.

"This edifice has high local content; the contractor, the engineers, skilled workers and artisans totalling to about 800 workers who have worked here since the project started are all Nigerians.

"The Anambra ICC was designed in Nigeria and modeled in China where all the steel inputs were fabricated and imported from, but all other input were sourced locally," he said.

Okonkwo, an architect said the ICC sitting on nine hectre of land had a capacity of 10,000 seats in the convention hall alone with inbuilt sound system and three event halls of different sizes, shops and banking hall.

He said the premises was designed to accommodate a football pitch sized lawn for games, monument fountain, 1,500 car parking spaces, drive-in boulevard and 5-star hotel facility.

Asiegbu said there was abundance of potential talents in the streets but coaches could not harness a of them because of lack of facilities and financial support..

Meanwhile, Chief Clement Ezeifedikwa, the President General of Ekwulimmiri Town has called on the incoming administration of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to use sports as an instrument of youth development and empowerment to combat insecurity in the communities.

Ezeifedikwa, a Security Expert who spoke at the grand finale of the Football Championship lamented the absence of government impact in grassroots sports activities.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (rtrd) said though private citizens have been doing well in creating opportunities for youth to express themselves in sports, the Anambra government should mainstream grassroots sports as part of governance action.

"As an expert in security, I can tell you that sports address youth restiveness anywhere more effectively than other approaches.

"Sports is a vehicle for youth development, you can see the enthusiasm in the youth, sports has a multiple purpose effect for addressing insecurity in communities.

"I want to call on the incoming government to take special interest in sports development, we need competitions, sports will not only address insecurity, it will empower families economically," he said.

Money Laundering: SAN Lauds Couple’s Acquittal, Seeks Criminal Justice System Review

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Louis Alozie, on Monday hailed a court judgment acquitting a couple, Mr Rowly Isioro and his wife, Ovuomarhoni, of fraud and money laundering charges.

Alozie told journalist that the judgment by Justice Mojisola Dada of a Lagos high court brought to end almost two years of trial of the couple.

He called for review of the criminal justice system to ensure that litigants would get justice in time and defendants wouldn’t suffer undue prosecution.

Isioro, a banker, and his wife, a businesswoman, were charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with fraud and money laundering.

The EFCC alleged that the couple laundered a total sum of $1.49 million through Ovuomarhoni’s bank account in Nigeria.

The couple was charged on seven counts in suit number ID/10729C/19.

In her judgment, Dada dismissed all the seven counts, holding that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations.

The judge said that evidence before the court fell short of the quality and standard required in law to warrant conviction.

According to Dada, the entirety of the case cannot stand and, therefore, fails.

“It is hereby dismissed and the defendants acquitted of all the counts preferred against them,” she held.

Alozie said that he was satisfied with the judgment but regretted that the couple was remanded for up to seven months.

He said that the couple had undergone emotional stress and deserved much compensation.

“Their acquittal is a welcome development but their detention was illegal.

“These people deserve compensation for their ordeal, they were remanded between seven and nine months among other losses; sadly, there is no law to my knowledge that provides for remedy,” he said.

I Represent The Generational Shift Anambra Yearns For... Ezenwafor

Mr Afamefuna Ezenwafor, National Rescue Movement (NRM) candidate in the Nov. 6, governorship election in Anambra, says his emergence as next governor would represent yearning for generational shift by the people.

Ezenwafor, 45-years and native of Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Area said this while fielding questions from journalists in Awka.

The Chemical Engineer described himself as young and richly endowed with the right leadership traits and qualities to serve Anambra in the next political dispensation.

He promised to use the experience garnered from years of residence in the area to implement policies that would harness human capital of the state, according to its manpower needs.

He also said he would make accountability and transparency his watchword as well as reinvigorate the local government system through regular stakeholders meetings and elections.

”I will oversee governance that is inclusive and participatory; merit and good reward shall displace mediocrity, sectionalism, clannishness and discrimination.

“I have acquired the requisite skills, experience and built capacity to re-engineer the state. I am poised to provide vision and people oriented leadership grounded on sincerity of purpose.

“I possess the dexterity to initiate and mobilise for the formulation and implementation of relevant policies to create the needed enabling environment,” he said.

Ezenwafor, however, said that agitation in the southeast had negatively affected the campaigns ahead of the election but that they were devising other means to reach out to electorate.

“The security situation in the state has affected our campaigns, the NRM campaign flag-off scheduled on Oct. 9, is cancelled due to the wave of insecurity in the state.

“I am not intimidated by any political party or candidate, if you have sampled the opinions of the electorate, you will realise that they are fed up with the so-called big parties.

“The so-called big parties have ruled at the centre or in the state, their performances are there for electorate to see, they are absolutely responsible for the situation we found ourselves today.

“It may interest you to know that the electorate are angling for a paradigm shift in terms of political party and candidate, that is what I represent,” he said.

Mr Valentine Ozigbo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Nov.6 governorship election in Anambra says the agitation and growing tension in the Southeast will best be addressed through political means.

Other major contenders in the race including Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sen. Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the debate.

Ozigbo blamed the tension and insecurity on continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, an activist and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) without trial by the Federal Government.

Ozigbo, a peace advocate and apostle of development politics said the Federal Government should rethink their strategy of resolving the political tension across the country especially the Southeast.

He said MNK should be released by the APC led Federal Government and adopt a non-violent and diplomatic means of addressing the calls for secession.

"Indeed, Nnamdi Kanu should actually be released while we go back to the root cause of the agitation, we can't be addressing a problem from the symptoms. An efficient way to address any crisis is to deal with the root cause.

"Why the agitations? If you think deeply, you'll understand that it is because Nigeria is not working, our leaders have failed us.

"The sense of hopelessness brought about by poor governance pervades the land, there's a lot we need to do to get Nigeria working again.

"The system is replete with poor road network, decayed infrastructure, failed social systems, devastating healthcare sector, a shrinking economy, lack of opportunities, and many more manifestations of poor governance," he said.

Ozigbo said there was a need for a national dialogue and restructuring of Nigeria to enthrone a just, competitive, and inclusive society.

He called for the protection of the human rights of the Igbos, correction of the economic justices in the country, and a stop to the dehumanisation of the people of the Southeast and all citizens.

According to him, as a way out of the current crisis, we need a fresh approach to leadership, we must focus on raising the competitiveness of the country, do away with nepotism and entrench competency.

Ozigbo said he had revolutionary ideas that would transform the education, healthcare, economy, social services, and other key human development indices in Anambra.

The other candidates who attended the event are Col. Geoffrey Onyejegbu (Rtd), the candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Dr Chidozie Nwankwo of the African Action Congress (AAC), and Chief Akachukwu Nwankpo of African Democratic Congress (ADC).
