Quite a lot of posters here have covered, what I think, are the main reasons for our current state of comatose. It is impossible to erase centuries of slave trade, colonisation and forcing together diverse groups for divide and conquer tactics for economic exploitation in a lifetime. Many of our current leaders come from that environment, born pre-1960 and have continued to perpetuate this "culture" of economic slave trade, colonisation and divide and conquer because it is what they understand. I also believe that religion is tool used by our leaders to enforce this division. So to that extent we as a country are also culpable. I see that many people are have put Ghana as an example of progress. But are they really that ahead of Nigeria. I think not. Jerry Rawlings might have taken, quite drastic steps to say the least, to mitigate against the effects colonisation but this has not stopped an over-reliance on all things foreign and UN aid - so there are not a very good an example really because they still suffer that inferiority complex brought about by centuries of colonisation. We have many so problems caused by the forcing together people with such diverse philosophy that it will take some doing to overcome the effects of divide and conquer and foster trust between the groups. That is the first thing we as a Nation need to deal with. As a nation we need something, a cause, to unite the ethnic groups then we will have a chance to solve our other problems. |
Too young to quit politic? I believe many will wholeheartedly disagree. Time to pack it in Sir. |
How do you enforce this in an open market like we have in Nigeria? We have companies who hire expatriated in spite of having an underutilised workforce. How can this possibly work given our penchant for all things foreign? More pie in the sky than reality! |

USA COURT GRANTS AKWA IBOM STATE REQUEST FOR INVESTIGATIVE SUBPOENAS AGAINST CRIMINAL SUSPECTS A federal court in Georgia, United States of America, has granted a landmark application directing two United States-based Akwa Ibom State indigenes to produce documents and submit to interrogation in connection with investigations into criminal violence in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. A judge presiding in the Northern District of Georgia authorized the issuance of subpoenas directing Mr. Thompson Essien and Nicholas Edet (aka Odudu Abasi), both Akwa Ibom citizens based in the United States, to produce documents and information, and to provide sworn testimonies, relating to criminal investigations into their activities in the United States and Akwa Ibom State. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/04/us-court-grants-a-iboms-request-for-subpoena-against-suspects/ Akwa Ibom State's application to the U.S. court was presented by the State Attorney General, pursuant to Title 28, Section 1782 of the U.S. Code, which brings to bear the full scope of the United States discovery process for use in foreign proceedings, such as criminal investigations in Akwa Ibom State. "We have information that Messrs. Essien and Edet have participated actively from the United States in planning and coordinating violent criminal activities in Akwa Ibom State, including the events on March 22, 2011, which led to the death of at least 12 people and extensive property damage in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria," said Robert R. Amsterdam, an international legal counsel to the State Government. "This Order represents a blow to criminal impunity in Akwa Ibom because it gives us access to the defendants' records in the United States, and it forces them to submit to interrogation on the record and under oath about their connection to rampant criminal activities in Akwa Ibom State." Reacting to the Order, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Ekpenyong Ntekim, said, "This is an excellent step forward because it exposes indigenes who sponsor criminal activities in their home States under the Diasporan cover." Chief Assam Assam, SAN “ the immediate past Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State and Ambassador Designate, who submitted the Application said he was similarly pleased with the decision of the court and added that "the Order was granted because it was meritorious and proper and will in the long run, lead to justice." |
@ niyo_zanl You beat me to it -its Africans for tolerating such poor leadership and doing nothing to help ourselves. |
Always preferred women without make up and natural hair (no weave-ons or extensions etc). They just look natural and earthy - just the way the Lord made them - wonderful :-) |
Abeg make dem no come lagos ohh - Soon we'll hear of bombings in Lagos in attempt after attempt to free their comrades. |
Prove it ![]() |
Whenever the story starts with "may" it means nothing will happen. Its just an excuse to set up committees to collect esatacodes or set up other monetary acquisition opportunities - na today! |
There is no career progression! |
Can a governor sack a democratically elected LG boss?? Not as far as the constitution goes. It's like suggesting that the president can summarily sack a governor or senator!! Very weird!! |
@stagger Would it be possible to send the email to me too: eemumble@gmail.com Thanks |
I think it is more than time for the esteemed general to take a bow from politics. It doesn't suit him anymore. |
They will make a decision in 6months!!! In the meantime what will the students be doing, especially those graduating this year! |
Before we go up in arms, we need more information about what his invention actually does and how it does it. All the article says is: Dr. Chinedu Emeka, has developed a computer software that could be used to track criminals and check their activities in the country. He said there was a need for a national data base of criminals, such as the one he developed, that would be easily accessible to security agencies in the country. From the article, he has written some software that uses a database - but we need more information before we pass judgement - me thinks. |
emmatok: So who is to blamed for the bombings. It is the northern leadership who have stood back and allowed this fundamentalism to grow. They have covertly praised it and courted it, most recently El Rufai even justified it. They probably thought they could use it to their advantage to pressure the current president. But as you can see the chickens have come home to roost and their homes, towns and cities are under attack too. There is nothing that the Nigerian government has done that does not affect every region in Nigeria. So what is so special about the heartland of Boko Haram - Nothing, absolutely nothing. Somebody there in the north lit a match out of greed and now the house has caught fire! |
I find this Carson piece both annoying and to be honest quite cowardly from the US. How can it be the government of Nigeria's fault that fundamentalists bomb fellow citizens. Is this cowardice on display in a poor attempt to curry favour with the fundamentalist. The US should stop trying, the Boko Haram Islamist fundamentalist hate the US without reservation and nothing they say now will/can ever change that. He says: “Nigerians are hungry for progress and improvement in their lives, but northern Nigerians feel this need most acutely. Life in Nigeria may be tough for many, but life in the North is grim for almost all,”Is the desperation in other parts of Nigeria? Has he been to the villages in west, east, ss and middle belt to see the desperation Just because they don't go around bombing everyone, does not mean that there are less desperate. He writes: “Public opinion polls and news reports suggest there is a strong sentiment throughout the country - but especially in the North - that government is not on the side of the people and their poverty is a result of government neglect, corruption, and abuse.”Is this Carson's justification for the bombing, how come the south have not been bombing up the country. Why didn't these fundamentalist bomb the country when we had a northern president? He also writes: Carson said President Goodluck Jonathan’s government needed a new social compact with northern citizens, local non-governmental organisations, civil society, and religious leaders, adding that “Abuja needs an economic recovery strategy that complements its security strategy. No Mr Carson, Northern nigeria needs pact with themselves. They need to sort out themselves and work out what they want. The northerners need to ask their leaders why the region is in its current state. They need to work out that an almajiri school that only teaches islamic education will not bring entrepreneurs that will create jobs in the region, they need to work out the bombings and instability will not attract investors to the region. They, the northerners need to get their own house in order and stop blaming everyone else for problems of the region. Finally he writes: “Northern populations are currently trapped between violent extremists on the one hand and heavy-handed government responses on the other. They need to know that their president is going to go to extraordinary lengths to fix their problems “he said. The US have been predicting the collapse of Nigeria for some time and this Carson fellow is just another voice applying the screw. One has to ask, what is the USA and Obama after? Is it the oil, is it the destabilisation of a potentially great country so another China won’t rise to compete with them, is it the joy in destroying the African continent. It completely baffles me what is to be gained by America in this case. It is easy to see why so many dislike America and its foreign policy.. |
Any Nigerian that not in government is marginalised... |
Is Forex trading not about buying low and selling high to make a profit? How is this gambling - na wa ohh! |
@Poster: Abeg chill joor - How would you define common sense or critical thinking? Nairaland is not an exam room. So Please let us not overburden ourselves with over-thinking issues, in what is essentially a light-hearted forum where people come to shoot the breeze every now and then. |
Great news, this is how to create jobs and positively impact the lives of the community. May God continue to strengthen your hand. |
Lol, which kain question be that. Have you ever known this to be the case. It seems to me many of our journalist write what they like without fear of retribution. On a more serious note though, I think strengthening and enforcing our libel laws should help with this in some respect. For other investigative work, if our law enforcement worked - the journalist would feel protected and really investigate... who knows |
Isn't it interesting that most of the women chose "eloquence"! The ability to constructed a sweet and bountiful lie will keep you in good stead.. ![]() |
The post above was not in support of Attah, if you that is what you think. Attah also started the science and technology centre but never finished amongst other white elephant projects. Akpabio did not initiate the airport and the infrastructure was developed upto a significant state before he took over. Don't forget that Akpabio was also Attah's commissioner and best friend who benefited from the farce before they fell out. These infrastructures are white elephants projects designed to siphon money out without any real benefits to the indigenes of the state. Just like his predecessor, there is no forward thinking, or an thought of the people in the state. How many have got jobs and I'm not talking about his contract lackeys. With all that resource the state is still choking in under-development and poverty while he sprays money from one whimsical ceremony to another.. waste of space. |
Common sense is not common.. when these people hear our leaders speak, they must think we are very stupid. |
Why do people write about Akwaibom without at least doing their homework. The airport was started by the previous government to a very advanced state and completed by Akpabio. Also most of the major roads going somewhere were started by the previous government, like the road to Le Meridian and Calabar. The others, well, go nowhere and are just waste of resources.. |
Akpabio is just another example of waste, waste, waste. A bridge? What is the value of building a bridge when the young people have no jobs. The bridge is apparently going to "proposed" Ibaka port. This port has no planning permission, no plans nothing. And there is a point this because the Ibaka port cannot compete with the port in PH. So where is this bridge going, it basically abridge to nowhere. The engineering company building this bridge Sinoeng is a Chinese company that does not transfer any technology to Akwaibom nor does it provide real jobs to the people of state ( except for manual labour ), so what is the gain here. The bridge is nothing more than a monument to Akpabio's ego and a total waste of Akwaibom money, time and energy - useless.. |
Also, out of interest, I read he was convicted twice in the UK and even went to jail. If this is true, why oh why, would he then go back to hide money there of all the countries in the whole wide world. chei!! What's that song again that goes, do not play with fire, fire fire fire, fire go burn you, |
Why should they return the money. If our judiciary was functional, Ibori would have been tried in Nigeria and the money recouped there. Nothing is for free, why should they do our work for us for free, se ohh |
