When Folashade Oluwafemiayo was chosen as one of the 38 Paralympians to represent Nigeria at the London 2012 Paralympics, she was overjoyed. Folashade, a power lifter, was well prepared for the global tournament and felt she could earn Nigeria a medal. To ensure that Folashade and her colleagues performed very well at the games, particularly after Nigeria’s failure at the Olympics, the National Sports Commission decided to take adequate care of the athletes. The power lifter and her colleagues were told that they would be paid $100 (N15 thousand) per day for the 19 days they would be in London. They were actually paid that. What Folashade and her colleagues did not know was that while they as athletes were paid a $100 per day, the least official of the ministry, including guests, got about 400 per cent what she got; with one getting about 900 per cent more. The REUTERS news agency has withdrawn its controversial story portraying the Nigerian Joint Task Force, JTF, shooting unarmed captives in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. In the story, published Sunday, REUTERS reported it was in possession of an amateur video showing Nigerian soldiers murdering its unarmed captives. But shortly after the story was published, the JTF faulted the video, saying it contained manipulated footages put together by propagandists to ridicule the Nigerian military. In what must be a huge professional humiliation, the news agency has now pulled down the report from its website, and publishing in its place a notice announcing the withdrawal of the story. The murder of a former Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Toyin Hamzat, might be linked to a tussle over a woman, the Ogun State Police Command has alleged. Mr. Hamzat, was shot dead at about 9 p.m. on Sunday, after he dropped a lady friend from his car in the Sagamu area, the police said. The Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said that the lady, who raised an alarm after the shooting, told the police that the vehicle used by the assassins “likely belongs” to her estranged husband. Mr. Adejobi also said that the lady, whom he declined to name, informed them that her ‘former’ husband had once met Mr. Hamzat at her residence. “Five suspects, including the lady’s husband have been arrested by the police and are currently being interrogated at the state CID, Eleweran, Abeokuta,” Mr. Adejobi said. The Movember Foundation derived its name from the combination of the words: moustache and November. It started in Australia in 2004 as an annual moustache-growing event to create awareness and raise funds for men’s health. Movember may appear to be a vain endeavour with a funny name. But in the last seven years, it has proved to be a valuable tool in efforts to improve the well-being of men. All members of the Movember Foundation and its supporters across the world begin the month of November by shaving their faces with the intention of growing and grooming admirable moustaches throughout the month. Observers, however, note that this seemingly ridiculous practice is an effective tool for advocacy, as men usually enjoy talking about sports, cars and clothes, while many of them do not care about their health. Nigeria loses N1.5 trillion naira annually to foreign education Nigeria spends over N1.5 trillion on students studying abroad, the Exam Ethics International, a non-governmental organisation, has said. The chairman of the group said, annually, Ghana gets N160 billion of Nigerian students’ funds, while Nigerians spend over N80 billion on education in the United Kingdom. The Chairman, Ike Onyechere, who said this in Abuja on Wednesday, said that the amount covers monies spent on scholarships, private and government owned institutions, and individuals. Mr. Onyechere said there is a need to stop the trend to “prevent this huge economic loss.” “This is the greatest negative balance of payment any country can suffer,” he said. He attributed the development to the decay in the country’s educational sector and the incessant strikes which had disrupted schools’ calendar. He said the development has caused the country huge economic losses and seriously contributed to the under-development of the sector which is key to driving other sectors. He stressed the need to overhaul the education sector, saying “unnecessary experimentation by those saddled with the responsibility of developing the sector would (not) prevent it from imminent collapse.” The chairman said part of the overhaul should include the scrapping of some examination bodies that were making things worse. “A body like the Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB) for example is nothing but a calamity for the country. Check out the top 50 universities in world, how many of them have parastatals that regulate admissions? “JAMB has gone through series of metamorphosis, yet it has nothing to show for it if not making access to education more difficult,” Mr. Onyechere said. He said the introduction of an e-testing for candidates is another wrong step in the wrong direction. Mr. Onyechere said every good education policy should take at least four years gestation period before its implementation process. “For JAMB to just wake up one day and say it is introducing such a test is laughable. “The idea of one body solely responsible for the admission of candidates into the many higher institutions we have in the country is totally unacceptable,” he said. JAMB, had on November 1, launched the e-testing, a Computer Based Testing for candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME). The education body said only a few percentage of students sitting for its examinations will use the e-testing in 2013 while all are expected to use it by 2015. The Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, had during the launch of the CBT described it as one of the transformative efforts of the government towards revamping the sector. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/107056-nigeria-spends-n1-5-trillion-annually-on-students-studying-abroad-group.html |

A top official of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency has said that the fuel scarcity being experienced in various states across Nigeria would continue till the first quarter of 2013 “if something urgent is not done.” The official, in an interview, Monday, with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said the scarcity would continue “because the demand for the product has over-shot supply.” A PREMIUM TIMES survey showed how marketers were taking advantage of the fuel scarcity to fleece Nigerians of billions of naira by selling petrol above the subsidized pump price in many states, while inefficient government agencies looked away or gave excuses. The official, who did not want his name disclosed, therefore, called for the total deregulation of the downstream sector as a way out of the lingering fuel scarcity sweeping across the country. He said a multi-phased deregulation process was the only way out of the scarcity. “I think the full deregulation of the downstream sector will be the way out of the lingering fuel crises we are experiencing,” the official said. The official, who decried the lingering scarcity, called for adequate enlightenment and the provision of cushioning measures before the total removal of subsidy. He said the delay in the payment of subsidy arrears to most marketers contributes immensely to the current scarcity as only the NNPC is currently importing the product. He said that for the deregulation process to be effective there was a need to resuscitate the country’s refineries, build adequate fuel reserves, tank farms, and functional pipeline network. Marketers want full deregulation The Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Obafemi Olawore, said the full deregulation of the downstream sector would bring about efficiency in the sector and signal an end to the perennial fuel crises. He explained that most oil marketers stopped the importation of the product since the beginning of the year due to what they described as “discrepancies in subsidy payment” which they said is responsible for the current scarcity. The Chairman, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, Dapo Abiodun, also called for the deregulation of the sector as a way of sanitising it. Nigeria spends over N80 billion on trips abroad, by her citizens, for medical treatment, the Senate Committee on Health has said. The leader of the committee, Ifeanyi Okowa, said this as he exchanged views with the Minister of State for Health, Mohammed Pate, and stakeholders in the sector at the budget defense session. Mr. Okowa said close to N80 billion is spent yearly on medical tourism in the country. “We know that several Nigerians travel outside the shores of this country to the United Kingdom and India for medical treatment. “You and I will agree that this is not the direction we need to go,” he said. Senior government officials, and their families, in Nigeria often travel for medical trips abroad. Some of the recent travellers include the Senate President, David Mark, and the first lady, Patience Jonathan. The committee chairman said that with 2013 budget estimate of about N297 billion, only 20 per cent was earmarked for capital development. The committee also expressed worry over the data collection technique of the ministry and its authenticity as well as the low level generation capacity of the ministry. In his presentation, Mr. Pate told the committee that the ministry is facing several challenges but gave the assurance that all hands were on deck to surmount these challenges. Mr. Pate said N480 million of the 2012 budget estimate had been allocated for preparedness and response to epidemic outbreak such as Cholera, Meningitis and Lassa fever.
