What you said is right in some ways but then look at it this way, people promote they link in normal traditional old method ppc and social media but forgot that they are other promotional method, what I used above is ppv(RON traffic and pops) and also what I promoted is smartlink, a link that have hundreds if not thousands of offers attached to it, and is smart enough to know the attribute of every device that clicked it, so it doesn't require lander.
I forgot to mention, I am good with ppc/search traffic(bing and adword too)
Oh before I forget, affiliate marketing is trial and error as in you have to try and try and try. forget what you see online from super affiliate, they also fell and fell till they get it right and all they will show you is only there success. you have to test and test before you get a successful campaign(from there you can recover all your lost).
