One of Nigeria’s leading stage actors, Nobert Young has described the nation’s fledgling movie industry as amateurish which is bedeviled by poor training. According to the thespian who is also a participant in the movie industry, “Nollywood has literally shot itself in the foot and it is not going anywhere anymore”. Mr Young made these assertion on our breakfast show, Sunrise, where he the guest artist of the week. He made it clear that the perceived multimillion dollar movie industry which is ranked as the third larger producer of movies in the world, must embark on rigorous training of all the skills used in the production of its stories. “Nollywood is how not to act because it is just beauty that the actors are portraying instead of the ability to be real when acting.” “They destroy the story by acting only on their beauty” he added. When asked how come the financial success of Nollywood is still growing despite his alleged lack of professional in the industry, the former Checkmate star who now does more of stage productions than movies stated that “mediocrity is what sells in Nigeria.” “It is not the first time that people are buying what they don’t need” he alluded, asking that “what sells in Nigeria.” Suggesting on the way forward, the actor noted that there are diverse guilds in the movie industry. He urged leaders of the guilds to establish training centres for their professions. Mr Young further declared that he has done enough of talking and was now ready to take some action to rescue his beloved profession, thereby establishing a ‘Centre for Media Development and Acting Academy’ in Lagos where aspiring actors can come and learn the ropes of being the best in the profession. He also denied the claim that the theatre is dead in Nigeria saying “theatre can never die” as he admitted that there might have being a lull in the level of stage productions but there is a gradual surge in recent times. He also admitted that low publicity might also be responsible for the declining popularity of stage productions which he claims go on every week across some major cities in the country. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/11/03/nollywood-is-amateurish-and-how-not-to-act-nobert-young/

For the umpteenth time, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akinwunmi Adesinsa, has affirmed that Nigeria will not face any food crisis as a result of the lingering flood disaster that has affected a number of states across the country. The Minister confirmed that prior to the flood disaster, the Jonathan administration at its inception, made plans to increase the nation’s food production by 20 million metric tonnes annually and this has led to an addition of about 8.1 million metric tonnes of food to the nation’s food supply for the year 2012. Dr Adesina made this known on our breakfast programme Sunrise, where he admitted that a large number of farm lands were affected by the flood but noted that, that hasn’t led to a proportionate crop loss. Admitting that “there were shocks to the system” as a result of the flood, but we “have a robust plan in place to produce more foods in the dry season and also plans to move farmers to areas of the nation’s arable land that were not affected by the flood” the Minister said. “Taraba is one of the most affected states during the peak of the flooding that lasted from October 11-15. 349,000 hectares of land in the state was inundated but that does not mean it will lead to resultant crop-loss. Probably about 100,000 hectares was just affected in terms of crop loss.” “Also in Anambra, 118,000 hectares of land was affected by the flood but just about 42,000 of the land will lead to crop loss” the Minister explained. “Nigeria doesn’t have a food crisis and we do not have famine” he affirmed, adding that “we have satellite images and remote sensing data to confirm this.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI8l1VLXA54&list=UUEXGDNclvmg6RW0vipJYsTQ&index=4 The Minister also revealed plans by the federal government to supply improve seeds and fertilizers to farmers across the country, noting that 1.4million farmers have been reached in the last 140 days via the new electronic wallet system that the government introduced to eliminate rent-seekers and politicians involved in the scheme of fertilizers distribution, which he claims never gets to the farmers. He also explained that the Ministry of Finance is currently working out modalities to guarantee 70 per cent of loans that banks will be giving to agro-allied industries, in a bid to drive down the interest rate of loans to farmers from double digits to a single digit. This amongst other things were narrated by the Minister of Agriculture has measures taken by the federal government to mitigate against any possible effect of the flood. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/11/03/nigeria-will-not-have-food-crisis-minister-of-agriculture/

The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has applauded federal government’s acceptance of the offer of negotiation by Islamic sect; Boko Haram, hoping that the initiative will bring in peace, security and tranquility in the country after years of bloodshed. A statement by the forum made available to Channels Television in Minna, the Niger state capital, stated that “dialogue rather than use of force, would help find a lasting solution to the worsening insecurity of lives and property in the country.” The 19 northern governors also condemned Friday’s attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State in which a civil war veteran and former member of the Supreme Military Council, General Mamman Shuwa was gunned down. According to the governors, this is one attack too many, as they urged all terrorists across the country to immediately stop their attacks.
