Nigerian Airport Supervisor Arrested For U.S Identity Theft

By Hadiza Mohammed

Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole, a 54-year-old Nigerian-born Newark Airport security supervisor was arrested at his home in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Monday morning for stealing the identity of a man who was murdered twenty years ago and using his papers to gain employment.

He was arrested after the Port Authority started an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip.

According to the Port Authority which runs the airport, Mr Oyewole, who came into the United States illegally in 1989, assumed the identity of Jerry Thomas and started working at the airport in 1992.

Jerry Thomas, 41, had been found shot in the head and chest inside a room at the Jamaica YMCA.

Officials believe that Mr Oyewole had no other motive except to gain employment and hide his illegal immigrant status. Port Authority spokesperson Steve Coleman said: “If there was any other nefarious activity, it would have come up on his very frequent background checks.”

Oyewole was vetted by the New Jersey State Police and U.S Customs and Border Protection. FJC Security Services, one of several contractors he worked under, reviewed his birth certificate and social security card.

“During his time with FJC, he had nothing in his record or his performance to indicate a cause for concern, or a reason to question the State Police and federal government’s background checks,” said FJC spokesman Michael McKeon in a statement.

Nairaland / General / Rim Launches Blackberry Bold 9900 Smartphone In Nigeria by qblaze(m): 3:08pm On Sep 13, 2011
By The Lagos Times

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) today announced the launch of its highly anticipated Bold 9900 smartphone in Nigeria. The new model is part of a wide-ranging push to restore the dwindling fortunes of the troubled company which has seen its valuation fall by more than thirty per cent over the past few months as it continues to lose market share to Apple and Android-powered devices.

The company's dual-chief executive structure has repeatedly come under fire from analysts and activist shareholders who would prefer Mike Lazaridis, the firm's technically-adept co-chief executive to assume operational control of the Canadian firm.

However, RIM seems to be betting on impressive growth in emerging markets where its BlackBerry phones are still aspirational models and its inbuilt data management systems work well in countries accustomed to low download speeds.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the thinnest BlackBerry smartphone yet at only 10.5mm and also includes built-in support for NFC (Near Field Communications), a new technology that is expected to aid mobile money transactions. The new model also features Liquid Graphics technology which includes a high-performance processor and superior screen resolution. It is one of several devices that the firm intends to roll out before upgrading its operating system in the next few months.

Waldi Wepener, Regional Director for East, West and Central Africa at RIM, said: “The new BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone offers a powerful combination of an outstanding keyboard and a beautiful touch display that we think customers will love. Featuring the new BlackBerry 7 operating system, it also delivers enhanced performance, faster browsing and richer multimedia.”

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 will be available at retail outlets of Nigeria's four GSM telecommunications service providers: Airtel, Etisalat, Globacom and MTN.

Sports / Pro Wrestler Macho Man Dies In Car Crash by qblaze(m): 12:10am On May 21, 2011
Randy “Macho Man” Savage, pro wrestler and spokesman for Slim Jim beef jerky, died today at 58 in Florida in a car accident. The Florida Highway Patrol said that Savage, whose real name is Randy Mario Poffo, was driving a Jeep Wrangler that jumped the median and crashed into a tree. Authorities say he had had a “medical event” that caused the accident but that an autopsy would need to be performed in order to find out specifics. Savage’s wife was in the car but escaped with minor injuries.

Savage was under contract with the WWE from 1985 to 1993 and held multiple wrestling championships and awards. He also acted in film and released a rap CD.
Politics / Re: ACN And CPC Have Failed To Reach An Agreement by qblaze(m): 8:46am On Apr 14, 2011
http://www.lagostimes.com/2011/04/14/cpc-ruins-alliance-talks/

The collapse of the alliance talks between the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has been blamed on Tunde Bakare, the CPC’s candidate for Vice-President. Mr Bakare’s refusal to sign a predated resignation letter irked the leaders of the ACN who decided to opt out of a planned “grand coalition” and go it alone.

After the parliamentary elections suggested that the People’s Democratic Party would retain the presidency, members of the two parties met to discuss the prospect of forging an alliance that would have a realistic chance of defeating the PDP’s highly popular candidate, Goodluck Jonathan. Northern leaders opposed to the president because of his decision to break the “zoning” pact, also piled pressure on the three major opposition parties to field a single candidate.

Sources close to the negotiations told the Lagos Times that while the ANPP’s Ibrahim Shekarau is bent on running an independent campaign, Nuhu Ribadu, the presidential candidate of the ACN was willing to sacrifice his candidature and throw his weight behind the CPC’s Muhammadu Buhari but the former Head of State refused to make concessions to the ACN leadership. This angered the leaders of the ACN who had made a few concessions of their own, such as agreeing that Bola Tinubu would not seek to be Vice-President.

The ACN had asked for a signed resignation letter from the CPC’s candidate for Vice-President, Mr Tunde Bakare, but both Buhari and Bakare refused to accede to this request. Mr Bakare, a capricious Pentecostal preacher had gone apoplectic with rage when the demand was made, insisting that the ACN should take his word at face value. The ACN refused. The party will now continue to campaign for Nuhu Ribadu, who has little chance of winning the coveted prize.
Politics / "iroko" Team Sweeps Ondo by qblaze(m): 6:29pm On Apr 10, 2011
http://www.lagostimes.com/2011/04/10/iroko-team-sweeps-ondo/

Ondo governor Olusegun Mimiko stamped his authority on the federal legislative elections as the Labour Party won a majority of seats in the state. Ifedayo Abegunde and Moshood Bakare won the Akure North/Akure South and Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituencies while in the race for senate, Dr Ayo Akinyelure and Mr Boluwaji Kunlere won in Ondo South and Ondo Central respectively.

The result surprised some analysts who had expected the Labour Party to struggle as a result of Mr Mimiko’s decision not to enter into an alliance with the more established Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). There was also an incipient threat from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which paraded a slate of well-heeled political veterans such as former governor Olusegun Agagu whom Mr Mimiko replaced after a bitter legal battle.

However, the election results suggest that the highly-popular Mimiko, who is fondly referred to as the Iroko for his doggedness and never-say-die spirit, is becoming a political force in his own right. This shouldn’t be a surprise as the medical doctor is one of Nigeria’s most talented grassroots moblisers and he has been in active politics for more than two decades. The result will be a warning to the PDP’s Jimoh Ibrahim, the businessman who is planning to challenge Mr Mimiko in the next gubernatorial elections.

Politics / Inec Error Could Hand Tinubu Victory by qblaze(m): 2:34pm On Apr 09, 2011
http://www.lagostimes.com/2011/04/09/inec-error-could-hand-tinubu-victory/

Remi Tinubu is poised to win the Lagos Central Senatorial race after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to include the name of Dapo Durosinmi-Etti the Labour Party’s candidate on the ballot. A former member of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mr Durosinmi-Etti was Mrs Tinubu’s major rival and had the support of the Lagos Rescue Team, a group of aggrieved former party members who were displeased by the manner of Mrs Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s standard bearer.

They had accused Bola Tinubu, the former Lagos Governor and ACN supremo of imposing his wife on the party. The group then defected to the Labour Party and launched a text message campaign against the Tinubus while imploring the electorate to break their vice-like grip on the party. Mrs Tinubu immediately ramped up her campaign commissioning new adverts and launching her own text campaign.

The omission is surely going to set tongues wagging about INEC’s competence and the possibility of Mr Tinubu’s influence on the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner as Mr Durosinmi-Etti had called a press conference on Monday to point out the error. While INEC rescheduled elections in states where the logo of the Congress of the Progressive Change (CPC) were omitted, the agency strangely allowed the Lagos Central senatorial election to to go on. A member of the Lagos Rescue Team said that the party would seek to nullify the election in court.

A Chief Magistrate Court has remanded the presidential candidate of the United National Party for Development (UNPD) Ebiti Ndok in the Maximum Security Prison, Keffi, Nasarawa State, for issuing dud cheques to two Abuja hotels.

The judge ordered that she should be remanded till April 19, 2011.

Mrs Ndok was arraigned by the police on Thursday after she wrote two dud cheques of N1,050,000 and 500,000 to Onnyx Hotel and the Transcorp Hilton respectively.

She stayed at Onnyx Hotel from November 20, 2010 until January 27, 2011 when she was evicted by the hotel’s management for failing to pay her debts.

The two hotels had been on her trail and located her after she participated in this week’s presidential debate alongside Professor Pat Utomi and Dr John Dara.

The police had arrested her on Tuesday.

Mrs Ndok, a graying, matronly woman of about 60 who favours a crew cut, had promised to pay a N50,000 minimum wage if elected president.

The Cross River native is the chairman of the UNPD and is the only female in the presidential contest.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sealed off two mansions belonging to the former governor of Edo state, Lucky Igbinedion. The two properties are located at 7 Justice Fatai Williams Street , Asokoro Abuja and 5 Danube Crescent , Maitama Abuja. The exercise was carried out on the heels of a forfeiture order granted to the EFCC on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, by a Federal High Court in Lagos. The court, presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris, authorised the Commission to seize 11 choice properties traced to the former governor. The properties are spread over Benin , Lagos , Abuja and London .The exercise began in Abuja today.
The EFCC team comprising operatives from the Assets Forfeiture Unit of the Commission, met with occupants of the two properties located in the Asokoro and Maitama districts of Abuja . At the Asokoro mansion, Mr. Joshua Abongeriouyi and Felix Bassey, who identified themselves as cook and security man respectively to the ex-governor confirmed that the property is owned by the former governor. The two aides along with a young lady who refused to identify herself but simply said she was a cousin to the ex-governor however refused to receive the court order from the EFCC team. At the Danube street property in Maitama, the only occupant who refused to reveal his name told the EFCC team that he did not know the owner of the property.
It would be recalled that Justice Idris, had, after considering an ex-parte application by a counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, granted the forfeiture order which now authorizes the EFCC to seize the properties. Igbinedion and six others are facing a 66 count charge bordering on money laundering and mismanagement of public funds amounting to about N3.2billion.The other accused persons are Patrick Eboigbodin; Michael Igbinedion and four firms: Gava Corporation Limited; Romrig Nigeria Limited, PML Securities Limited and PML( Nigeria) Limited.
In line with the forfeiture order, the seized assets are: a block of four flats at No 43 Etete Road, Benin City; a property housing Chicken Republic along Sapele Road, Benin City; a property at No 3 Boundary Road, Benin City; a building at No 20B Estate Road, Benin City; a building along Ugbor Police Station Road, Benin City; a mansion at Asokoro, Abuja; a mighty house at neighbourhood of Etete and Ugbor , Benin City; Sheraton Hotel at Government House Road, Benin City; a property at No 55C Adebisi Omotola Close, off Samuel Adedoyin Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, a property at No 5 Danube Crescent ,Maitama ,Abuja and a house at No 29, Sheldon Avenue ,Highgate, London.
Igbinedion, had been ordered by Justice Adamu Hobon, of the Federal High Court Benin to physically appear in court on March 22, 2011, or be summoned through a bench warrant. The former governor, his younger brother, Michael and Patrick Eboigbodin were expected to be presented by their counsel for arraignment in court to answer to a fresh 66 count charge of graft filed against him by the EFCC. Counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs had pleaded with the court to issue an order for a bench warrant against Igbinedion and others, for failing to appear personally for the trial. He argued that “in a serious criminal matter such as this, they cannot sit in the comfort of their homes and say their lawyers will say it for them”.
Politics / Acn Plane In Forced Landing, Fola Adeola Escapes Death by qblaze(m): 3:13pm On Mar 08, 2011

The Vice Presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Fola Adeola, and other party chieftains narrowly escaped death yesterday at the Bauchi Airport in Bauchi.
The accident occurred when the chartered airplane conveying Mr. Adeola and chieftains of the ACN including the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Boss Mustapha; and Yusuf Alli, former National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party; crash landed due to non clearance of the airport runway by airport authorities.
The runway which had been taken over by rams and goats, was not cleared which caused the pilot of the aircraft with number 5BN-BNR to do a forced-landing, damaging the aircraft in the process. The accident occurred at about 12.00noon
The plane conveying the ACN presidential candidate, Nuhu Ribadu, and other leader leaders of the party had to hover in the air for about an hour before the runway to be cleared.
The party chieftains were attending the ACN presidential rally scheduled for Bauchi today.
The Director of Media and publicity of the Nuhu Ribadu Campaign Organisation, Ibrahim Modibbo who confirmed the report condemned said his orgainsation suspected sabotage.
“We suspect sabotage and as a matter of urgency we call for an investigation into the immediate and remote cause of the runway invasion,” Modibbo stated.
“If not for the expertise of the pilot, we would probably not be saying what we are saying today.
“Is it possible for President Jonathan who is also the Presidential candidate of the PDP to be involved in such a situation where the runway he is to land on will be filled by rams, which could have been controlled?” Modibbo said
Mr. Modibbo said the Nuhu Ribadu Campaign Organisation was not asking the PDP government to do it a special favour by guaranteeing safety and security in our airports. “What we are saying is that no life is more important than the other. Before the present PDP government is booted out by the people, they should at least ensure that our airports, our roads , and our towns and villages are safe enough for everyone including our candidates and particularly during this electioneering period,” he said.

CPC Flags Off North-West Campaign

A Text of General Muhammadu Buhari’s Speech at the Rally

My friends, ladies and gentlemen, my name is Muhammadu Buhari, the former military Head of State. And I thank the Almighty God who gave me the unique opportunity to serve this nation from the humble rank of Platoon Commander to Commander-in-Chief, at the revered rank of a general in the Nigerian army. I acknowledge the hand of God on me, when I found myself serving as the Country’s Head of State in the aftermath of a military coup.
I submit that, in the affairs of man, it is only God that can determine history and ordain destiny. In my own case, it is destiny that threw me up to serve as the Head of State of this great country at that particular moment of our national history.
I would say, with all humility that, I dutifully accepted all the challenges and responsibilities of head of state and government. Whatever role I played, whether as leader or member of government, all my decisions and actions were always guided by a clear conscience; I was also guided by and agreement with my colleagues and members of my Executive Council – which always enabled me to try to avoid impropriety, dishonesty, corruption and other forms of abuse of office and power. My conscience constantly guided me to treat everyone and every group in the country with
fairness and equity. That is why I can stand before Nigerians here today, and hold my head high – knowing that I am ever ready to face any scrutiny or answer any question regarding my past performance as a public figure. I am always ready to give account of my past records to the Nigerian people.
However, it is my firm belief that our occasion today is not about the past – rather it is an engagement that reflects on the future of our Country. We are today facing an uncertain future in an uncertain world. It is vital Nigerians make the right choice about who would look after them in the next four years.
I am standing here today as the Presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). I consider myself to be on a rescue mission. Never before have we seen such bad leadership in our national life. The country’s life is literally falling apart on all fronts on security, in education, on the economy, in healthcare system, and youth employment. Many critical observers have begun to list Nigeria among the failed states of the 21st century. We are internationally recognized for corruption, inefficiency, business uncertainty and infrastructural decay. For 12 years the PDP government has failed to tackle all these problems in spite of the resources at their disposal.
We can and we must reverse these trends. The first step is for Nigerians to vote PDP out. They are finished! They have passed their “sell-by date”. Given the current state of affairs in the country, Nigerians have the legitimate right to ask the following questions: Where was the government when this great country of ours took a nose-dive on many critical sectors?
Why does this government run from pillar to post, looking helpless, as it beats about the bush on the fundamental issue of resolving electric power supply challenge of the country?
Why should our economy be left to operate on individual power generating sets? Furthermore, if their aspiration to govern Nigeria for the next 60 years or 200 years is pure, why are they unable to guarantee something as fundamental and basic as security of life and property?
Where was the PDP-led government when what started as occasional incidents of kidnapping degenerated to the embarrassing dimension of an incorporated evil business?
Does it matter to this administration that insecurity has compelled many potential foreign investors to drop Nigeria from their list?
Should we continue to vote the same people who have presided over the decline in quality of life in Nigeria for the last twelve years?
Shamefully, these people are openly canvassing a desire to rule Nigeria for sixty or 200 years! Nigerians must reject these ‘political zoo keepers’ and stop them in their tracks. And stop them now. During the last twelve years, they have almost transformed Nigeria into the proverbial animal farm where sycophants dominate both the airwaves and print media.
Enough of PDP! Enough of them! The CPC movement is poised to restore confidence in our people. We are providing the platform that would enable the country break out of the present stranglehold. We in the CPC see and share the plight of the suffering citizens. We in the CPC here today offer a political platform whose imperative is to rescue Nigeria and reposition it for greater economic development and social well being. As such the first order of business for the CPC-led government would be to secure Nigeria better and to manage it better. The priority will be to end the feeling of insecurity in the country.

Judicial Crisis Escalates As PDP Submits Two Petitions Against Court Of Appeal President, Justice Ayo Salami
Posted: February 22, 2011 - 04:04
By SaharaReporters, New York
The Osun and Ekiti state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier today submitted two petitions containing phone call logs that the party claimed it retrieved pertaining to calls made between operatives of rival Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the president of the court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, during the last gubernatorial appeal tribunal sittings that upstaged two of its governors.

One of the petitions was sent directly to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the second one sent to the office of Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan.

See petitions below:

The Chairman National Judicial Council, Abuja

OSUN APPEAL JUDGEMENT: ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE AGAINST JUSTICE AYO SALAMI
“We are constrained to bring additional evidence of miscarriage of justice in the Osun Governorship Appeal to your attention, in expectation, rather than hope, that this glaring injustice shall be redressed without delay. Forwarded with this petition, are two booklets of call logs, which prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Justice Ayo Salami colluded with the Action Congress of Nigeria to arrive at a predetermined outcome.

“Independent investigations have revealed quite clearly that the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami (subscriber no. 08034004887) and through one of his closest friends, Tunji Ijaya (subscriber no. 08034010700) was, before, during and after the procured judgement, in regular telephone contact (at least) with the following Action Congress of Nigeria chieftains and Institution: Bola Tinubu 08034240000, Lai Mohammed: 08034301111 Olatunji Kayode Olowolafe: 08035605656 Hakeem Muri-Okunola : 08034030263, Lagos State Government: 08034020700, 08033235280 Lagos State Government (COS): 08034301122.

“Even more damning is the fact that Justice Ayo Salami was regularly communicating with the following legal practitioners, who represented the Action Congress of Nigeria at Election Appeal Tribunals at various times: Lateef Fagbemi SAN: 08033246788; Akintola Adeniyi SAN: 08037643770; Nnaemeka Ngige SAN: 08035240990; Ricky Tarfa SAN: 08034600000; Ibrahim Abdullahi SAN: 08033896874, 08037041655.

“We are confident that the National Judicial Council is more than capable of drawing the appropriate inferences and the right conclusions from these suspicious interactions between members of the Bar (whose cases were being heard by the Court of Appeal) and the President of the selfsame Court. We strongly believe that the invidious plan to snatch victory by fraud was hatched in the course of those illicit interactions.

“A certain Tunji Ijaya (subscriber no. 08034010700), known to be very close to Salami, and obviously the go-between in many of Justice Salami’s judicial deals, deserves to be probed further, owing to the sheer volume and frequency of voice calls and text messages between him and Justice Salami (subscriber no. 08034004887) on the one hand and Action Congress personages on the other.

“Also, one Lateef Yusuff (subscriber nos. 08033333469 and 08038305298) communicates with the Appeal Court President with equally suspicious regularity. Even more curious is that all the above mentioned individuals’ calls oftentimes originated from, and/or terminated at, an MTN booster station located at 11B, Waziri Ibrahim Street, Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos.

“Several voice calls and text messages which originated from them, terminated at an MTN booster station in Temple Road, Ikoyi Flats; where Justice Adamu Jauro received on, and made calls from, subscriber no. 08035956287. It is pertinent to mention that Justice Jauro was a member of all three Election Appeal Panels constituted by Justice Ayo Salami.

“Interestingly too, many of the calls from the Action Congress of Nigeria party men to MTN’s 11B, Waziri Ibrahim street booster station originated from a booster station located at 6, Bourdillion Road, Ikoyi. Who lives on Bourdillion Road, Ikoyi? Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“May we also take the liberty to suggest that the relevant law enforcement agencies focus attention on the following numbers, among several others; which are on the prepaid platform? 08034426491, 08037287254, 08034022742, 08033063826, 08033140947, 08033235280, 08065297811 08166681589, 08029446330, 08023071844, 08033154018, 08023063539, 08030000410, 08023063539, 08034611826, 08038068712, 08035956187, 08034535568.

“We are more than convinced that detailed transcripts of the text messages and voice calls between and among the subscribers to the numbers we have provided and many others on the call logs will complete the picture of how the course of justice was perverted in the Osun Governorship Appeal judgement. And we make this assertion with all sense of responsibility.

“Is it any surprise, therefore, that the Action Congress of Nigeria has been defending Justice Ayo Salami as if its political life depended on his retention as the President of the Court of Appeal? Why is the Action Congress of Nigeria carrying on as if the President of the Court of Appeal is loved and trusted only by this funny ‘family Party’; as if the Party owns him? Why has the usually discerning Nigerian Press allowed itself to be hoodwinked into a sustained propaganda campaign on a matter it failed/refused/neglected to investigate, as serious practice of journalism should dictate?

“But for our vigilance and doggedness, the media would have misled the reading public into believing that Justice Ayo Salami is a hero, when, in fact, he is the exact opposite; an anti-hero. The answers to the questions above and several others are no longer blowing in the wind; they have been made pretty obvious.

“The Osun Appeal judgement was financially induced and we believe that transcripts of the communication among the parties concerned should confirm the veracity of our claims.

“Deux Projects Ltd owned by Olatunji Kayode Olowolafe: 08035605656, is one of the companies through which the Action Congress of Nigeria funds are usually laundered, and thereafter deployed to execute devious plans of this nature. We, therefore, recommend that the accounts of this company be properly scrutinized. Our notion of justice is what is right, fair, appropriate and deserved. Justice is achieved when an unjust act is redressed and the victim feels whole again. Justice also means the offenders are held accountable for their behaviour.

“While we stand ready to collaborate with law enforcement/security agencies to name, shame and jail the certified reprobates behind this egregious judicial crime, we shall also be most willing to assist them with further insights- if required.

“Since the Osun Appeal judgement has been tainted with bias and suspected corruption, our prayer is that the National Judicial Council and the Supreme Court reverse this perverse judgement and order a return to status quo ante bellum.

“Please accept the assurances of our highest consideration and regard.

Former Governor Segun Oni's Petition To Jonathan:

His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Jonathan GCFR
President, Federal Republic of Nigeria
Aso Villa, Abuja Abuja.

FURTHER COMPLAINT AGAINST HON JUSTICE AYO SALAMI &ORS OVER MY REMOVAL FROM OFFICE AS GOVERNOR OF EKITI STATE

“I refer to my earlier petitions to the National Judicial Council requesting that investigations be caused into the miscarriage of justice which resulted in my premeditated removal from office as the Governor of Ekiti State and wish to supply further empirical proof that the Appeal Court judgement was a product of fraud.

“I forward along with this petition, printed copies of CALL LOGS from Sept 2010-Jan 2011, on JUSTICE AYO SALAMI’s post paid phone number 08034004887 and MR TUNJI IJAIYA’s 08034010700. Mr Ijaya is Justice Salami’s known agent and the link in his dealings with ACN leaders and with lawyers of the ACN in the unholy business of miscarrriage of justice.

“From the month of September 2010 up to October 2010 when the judges wrote and delivered the judgement in Ekiti, and up till January this year,

Justice Salami, Justice Adamu Jauro and the said agent, Ijaya, were in close telephone contact by voice or SMS with counsel to ACN candidate and officials of the party .

“I believe the unethical communications were directed at the invidious act of perversion of the course of justice, and to achieve the pre-determined purpose of removing me from office.

“A simple perusal of the Call Logs revealed the following : 27/09/2010 at 16 .26hrs, call to Justice Salami (08034004887) by LATEEF FAGBEMI, SAN(08033246788); 30/09/ 2010 at 10.28hrs, call to Salami from LATEEF FAGBEMI SAN , 30/09 /2010 at 17 .04 hrs, call to Salami by Yussuf Alli, SAN 08038976850, 08033340330; 12/10 23 .02 HRS Call to Salami from Lateef Fagbemi SAN 08033246788.

“Other ACN lawyers in regular contact with either Justice Salami or Tunji Ijaiya are: Akintola Adeniyi SAN 08037643770, Nnaemeka Ngige SAN 08035240990 and Ibrahim Abdullahi, SAN 08033896874. Also observed in the call logs are consistent calls and SMS texts from the following ACN leaders to Justice Salami via the MTN mast at 11B, WAZIRI IBRAHIM ST. OR to Mr Tunji Ijaiya at the same location: LAI MOHAMMED PUBLICITY SECRETARY, ACN -08034301111; Olatunji Olowolafe 08035605656 (A known contractor and financier of ACN) Lagos state Government 08034030263,08034020700,08033235280, Chief of Staff, Lagos 08034301122.

Some of the calls also originated from or terminated at Bourdillion street, which is well known as the area where ACN leader, BOLA AHMED TINUBU, has his residence.

“You will also recall that the ACN on the 4th October,2010 gave indications of having seen the judgement when Alhaji. Lai Mohammed, its Publicity Secretary, alleged in a press statement that the PDP was moving to arrest the yet undelivered judgement using the “Sokoto option’.
“One need not wonder now how the leakage of the judgement of the court to the ACN elements could have happened. Further investigation by security agencies will reveal the content of these communications which I believe were done to pervert the course of justice.

THIS INVESTIGATION WILL CONFIRM MY BELIEF THAT THE JUDGEMENT IN FAYEMI V ONI WAS TAINTED WITH CORRUPTION AND FRAUD.

Sir, it is trite that justice must not only be done but must be seen to have been done. I am also aware that the NJC and the Supreme Court have the power and the responsibility to redress glaring cases of abuse of court process or abuse of principles of fair hearing such as this one.

“It is in the light of the above that I hereby ask for further investigation of Justice Salami and the other Justices who sat on the Ekiti Appeal case and a redress of the injustice done to me and the people of Ekiti State.

I remain,

Yours Faithfully,
Chief Segun Oni.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate. The party’s leadership ratified the decision Thursday at its National Convention. APGA’s chairman Victor Umeh said that no party member had indicated interest in the position forcing the party to enter into wide consultations with other political parties. He said that APGA had decided to back Jonathan after evaluating all the candidates.
However, the party still faces a legitimacy fight ahead of the 2011 general elections as its founder Chekwas Okorie is still waging a legal battle to wrest control of the party from Victor Umeh and Peter Obi, the governor of Anambra state.

State TV: Mubarak to address nation Thursday night

By MAGGIE MICHAEL, Associated Press – 2 mins ago
CAIRO – State TV says President Hosni Mubarak will speak to the nation Thursday night from his palace in Cairo.
The announcement comes after Egypt's military proclaimed on national television that it stepped in to "safeguard the country" and assured protesters that Mubarak will meet their demands. In Washington, the CIA chief said there was a "strong likelihood" Mubarak will step down Thursday.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's military announced on national television that it stepped in to "safeguard the country" and assured protesters that President Hosni Mubarak will meet their demands in the strongest indication yet that the longtime leader has lost power. In Washington, the CIA chief said there was a "strong likelihood" Mubarak will step down Thursday.
The dramatic announcement showed that the military was taking control after 17 days of protests demanding Mubarak's immediate ouster spiraled out of control.
Footage on state TV showed Defense Minster Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi chairing a meeting of around two dozen top stern-faced army officers, seated around a table. Not at the meeting were Mubarak, the military commander in chief, or his vice president Omar Suleiman, a former army general and intelligence chief named to his post after the protests erupted Jan. 25. That could be a sign that Suleiman, as well, was being pushed out of power.
Gen. Hassan al-Roueini, military commander for the Cairo area, told thousands of protesters in central Tahrir Square, "All your demands will be met today." Some in the crowd held up their hands in V-for-victory signs, shouting "the people want the end of the regime" and "Allahu akbar," or "God is great," a victory cry used by secular and religious people alike.
Tantawi was heading a meeting of the military's supreme council. Its spokesman read a statement on state TV announcing its "support of the legitimate demands of the people."
He said the council was in permanent session to explore "what measures and arrangements could be made to safeguard the nation, its achievements and the ambitions of its great people" — a suggestion that the council was now in charge of the country.
The statement was labeled "communique number 1," further phrasing that suggested a military coup.
The head of the ruling party, Hossam Badrawi, told The Associated Press that he expects that Mubarak will "address the people tonight to respond to protesters' demands."
The moves came after protests Thursday increasingly spiraled out of the control of efforts led by Suleiman to contain the crisis. Labor strikes erupted around the country in the past two days, state employees revolted against their directors and workers began joining the crowds of anti-Mubarak protesters centered for the past 17 days in Tahrir Square.
On Thursday, hundreds of lawyers in black robes broke through a police cordon and marched on one of Mubarak's palaces — the first time protesters had done so. The president was not in Abdeen Palace, several blocks from Tahrir. The lawyers pushed through a line of police, who did nothing to stop them.
Tens of thousands were massed in Tahrir itself, joined in the morning by striking doctors who marched in their white lab coats from a state hospital to the square and lawyers who broke with their pro-government union to join in.
"Now we're united in one goal. The sun of the people has risen and it will not set again," one of the lawyers, Said Bakri, said before the series of military announcements.
Suleiman and the foreign minister have been warning of the possibility of a coup or imposition of martial law if the protesters did not agree to a government-directed framework of negotiations for reforms. The protesters demanded Mubarak step down first.
Politics / NJC Backs Justice Salami by qblaze(m): 12:06am On Feb 10, 2011

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has thrown its support behind the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami who has fought to remain in his present position after learning of plans to promote him to the Supreme Court. The 24-member council rose from an emergency meeting today and agreed that Salami had a right to refuse a promotion.
The NJC is comprised of Mr J.B. Daudu, the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), former NBA presidents, Rotimi Akeredolu and Olisa Agbakoba, two Supreme Court Justices and other legal luminaries. The NJC has the constitutionally empowered to approve judicial appointments made by the Federal Judicial Service Commission.

Justice Ayo Isa Salami, the President of the Court of Appeal has sued Aloysius Katsina-Alu, the Chief Justice of Nigeria over the latter’s plan to promote him to the apex court.
Salami filed the Originating Summons at an Abuja Federal High Court through his lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).The Judicial Service Commission, the National Judicial Council and the Attorney-General of the Federation were also joined as co-defendants.
Salami’s affidavit contends that the plan to promote him to the Supreme Court is in bad faith, without precedent and politically-motivated. He also alleges that Katsina-Alu tried to force him to pervert the course of justice during a hearing on the Sokoto state governorship tribunal.
The President of the Appeal Court claimed that his refusal to accede to the Chief Justice’s demands have made him the subject of a witch-hunt. He is seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants jointly and/or severally, by themselves, and all officers, servants and functionaries of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or otherwise howsoever, from recognizing, acting on, doing anything in recognition of or putting into effect any decision of the defendants purporting to appoint the plaintiff to the Supreme Court as a Justice of the Court pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Summons.

A section of the affidavit reads:
I have all along enjoyed my work as President of the Court of Appeal and did not have any issues or disagreement with the 1st defendant [Katsina- Alu] until the controversies over the gubernatorial election petition in Sokoto state came to light.
Following my appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal, I found among the pending election petition appeals, the Sokoto State Gubernatorial election petition appeal.
I set up panels of the Appeal Court to dispose of the pending petitions including that of Sokoto.
I was however shocked when subsequent to the setting up of a panel on the Sokoto Gubernatorial election petition appeal, and after all parties had filed and exchange briefs, adopted same and judgement reserved the 1st defendant summoned me by telephone to his office in Abuja.

Plateau: Emergency rule and the hidden agenda

By Chris Gyang

Leadership newspaper’s front page comment of Tuesday, January 18, 2011, did not come to us as a surprise. They were only carrying on the odious tradition that has been established by some northern newspapers over the years with regard to Jos and Plateau State in general. A tradition that sees journalism mainly as an instrument for pursuing interests that are sectional and self-serving, to the detriment of professional ethics and the common good. Of course the positions canvassed in that editorial are ones that have become the staple of those northern newspapers and the interests they represent.
These newspapers and the interests they represent see in Plateau State and Jos in particular a land that must be had at all costs and by all means. And because violent methods have so far failed to yield the required results, extreme measures such as dismemberment and imposition of state of emergency seem to have become the last resort. Indeed, that editorial (with the alarmist headline ‘State Of Emergency Now!’) could have been concocted in some big wig’s ‘zaure’ somewhere in northern Nigeria and not in the hallowed offices of a newspaper stable that practices journalism in its purest form. It is for this reason that we once again find it imperative to react to it and set the records straight.

A woman probably not in the best mental health is suing P. Diddy for $900 billion dollars, because allegedly Diddy, the mother of his children, Kim Porter, and Rodney King “knocked down” the World Trade Center and “then they all came and knocked my children down." It gets more disturbing/confused/sad from there. The woman also claims Diddy is the father of her 23-year-old son and that he stole a casino chip from her once: “I won a lot of money at the casino in Mississippi and Sean P. Diddy Combs has my chip to my money. I heard he gave it to Gwen Allen to hold but she can not cash it in. I want my chip please help me. it's well worth over 100 zillions of dollars, and my hospital keys. They put me and my baby in the hospital and broke my baby 2 legs and sexual assaulted my children and crushed us." This is like when mentally ill people audition for Idol and you're supposed to laugh, except really, you shouldn't be laughing at the mentally ill. Somehow, there is a hearing scheduled for this case on Monday, January 31, because our court system is not already overloaded. [Radar]
Nairaland / General / Oprah Reveals Secret Half Sister by qblaze(m): 11:20am On Jan 27, 2011
http://celebrity.aol.co.uk/2011/01/25/oprah-half-sister/

Chatshow queen Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she has a half sister who was kept a secret for 47 years.

The talkshow host announced the news on her own show, saying she was "shocked to the core" when she discovered that her mother Vernita Lee, had given up baby Patricia shortly after her birth.

Oprah shocked her audience by declaring: "Yes, it is true. It is true that my mother is also Patricia's birth mother.

"That means Patricia is my half sister who I never knew existed."

At the time of Patricia's birth, Oprah was eight years and old and living with her father, and had no idea that her half sister had been born.

After years of searching for her mother, Patricia noticed some strange coincidences when she saw an interview with Vernita on TV.

Having got in touch with the family, DNA tests confirmed that Patricia was an 85 per cent match to Winfrey's niece, leaving little doubt that she is related to Oprah.

So good news for Oprah, not so good for Piers Morgan, who missed out on the huge scoop just a few days earlier when Winfrey was blubbing on his CNN talk show.

He was quick to tweet: "Damn and blast, you're all absolutely right, I should have asked @Oprah: 'Got any secret half-sisters called Pat we don't know about?' Fail."

Well, she was always going to save that one for her own show.

Politics / Nwodo Forced To Resign by qblaze(m): 4:03pm On Jan 18, 2011
http://www.lagostimes.com/2011/01/18/nwodo-forced-to-resign/

Okwesilieze Nwodo, the Peoples Democratic Party’s chairman has been forced to resign by the National Executive Committee. His ouster was the climax of a power tussle between the erstwhile chairman and a powerful bloc of South East governors led by Enugu’s Sullivan Chime.

The South-Eastern zone of the party had passed a no-confidence vote of Nwodo asking him to step aside pending the determination of a court ruling stripping him of his membership of the party.

An Enugu High Court had ruled that Nwodo was not a member of the PDP and therefore could not act as the chairman of the party. As a result, Dr Haliru Mohammed Bello presided over the party’s National Convention even though Nwodo claimed that the court’s order had been vacated and later attempted to forcibly take control of the proceedings.

It appears that some party bosses believed that Nwodo was secretly working for the interests of the president's archrival Atiku Abubakar who is Nwodo's close friend and former ACN colleague.

Jerry Gana, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees addressed the press after today’s meeting. He said: “Following his behaviour at the just concluded PDP special convention in Abuja which embarrassed party members, Dr Okwesilieze has resigned as the National Chairman of the party and his resignation has been accepted by the party. The party has consequently empowered the deputy national chairman Dr Bello Haliru Mohammed to act as the chairman of the party”

Dr Nwodo’s resignation effectively ends his power tussle with Enugu’s governor, Sullivan Chime with whom Nwodo had been having a long-running disagreement. A compromise brokered between the two factions by the president suggested that Nwodo would be allowed to produce all the candidates in his native Nsukka zone. However, the Nwodo faction in Enugu recently conducted a primary election and adopted Okey Ezea as its candidate.

Starcomms, the publicly-traded Nigerian telecommunications company, is leading the race to purchase Multi-Links Telkom from its South African parent company according to a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations. If the deal goes through, it would make Starcomms Nigeria’s largest CDMA company in terms of assets and subscriber base. Multi-Links Telkom has been shopping for a buyer since Telkom’s chief executive Jeffrey Hedberg announced that running the Nigerian subsidiary was no longer a viable proposition.
Three Nigerian telecommunications firms; Visafone, Globacom and Etisalat had been linked to the beleaguered firm but they all denied interest. Multi-Links has been hit by dwindling profit margins and falling demand for CDMA services. Prior to his appoinment as Telkom’s chief, Mr Hedberg had been seconded to Multi-Links to turn the company’s fortunes around. He had,
