http://www.lagostimes.com/2011/04/14/cpc-ruins-alliance-talks/

The collapse of the alliance talks between the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has been blamed on Tunde Bakare, the CPC’s candidate for Vice-President. Mr Bakare’s refusal to sign a predated resignation letter irked the leaders of the ACN who decided to opt out of a planned “grand coalition” and go it alone.

After the parliamentary elections suggested that the People’s Democratic Party would retain the presidency, members of the two parties met to discuss the prospect of forging an alliance that would have a realistic chance of defeating the PDP’s highly popular candidate, Goodluck Jonathan. Northern leaders opposed to the president because of his decision to break the “zoning” pact, also piled pressure on the three major opposition parties to field a single candidate.

Sources close to the negotiations told the Lagos Times that while the ANPP’s Ibrahim Shekarau is bent on running an independent campaign, Nuhu Ribadu, the presidential candidate of the ACN was willing to sacrifice his candidature and throw his weight behind the CPC’s Muhammadu Buhari but the former Head of State refused to make concessions to the ACN leadership. This angered the leaders of the ACN who had made a few concessions of their own, such as agreeing that Bola Tinubu would not seek to be Vice-President.

The ACN had asked for a signed resignation letter from the CPC’s candidate for Vice-President, Mr Tunde Bakare, but both Buhari and Bakare refused to accede to this request. Mr Bakare, a capricious Pentecostal preacher had gone apoplectic with rage when the demand was made, insisting that the ACN should take his word at face value. The ACN refused. The party will now continue to campaign for Nuhu Ribadu, who has little chance of winning the coveted prize.

Good stuff. Such an alliance would be very difficult to work out. Nigerians would be the ultimate losers eventually when they start fighting for the spoils of their conquest. Thank God. Goodluck is still my choice right now.

who said cpc doesnt have money, who gave buhari the private jet he is using for his campaign, if Buhari in his wildest dreams ever becomes president CPC will become worse than PDP, You guys supporting Buhari are sincere and honest fools believe me,

Buhari is a pretentious anti-corruption fighter. The trajectory of a man's journey in public life matters. For the follwoing reasons I can not vote for Buhari

> 1. He is an oligarch who does not believe in equality before the law. The way he jailed Lateef Jakande, Jim Nwobodo, Ambrose Ali, Pa Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Ayo Ojewumi on cases that had no foundation and allowed Awwal Ibrahim, the then Niger State governor, who was arrested in Heathrow Airport in London with 14 million pounds sterling and several millions of Niara and dollars to be under house arrest is my evidence. He also allowed Shehu Kangiwa, Sokoto State Governor who conducted and supervised the famous Bakolori Massacre of poor peasant farmers whose land were appropriated without compesation to remain under house arrest.

> 1(a) Ayo Ojewumi became blind as a result of his imprisonment over false charges and died shortly after.

> 1 (b) Prof. Ambrose Alli also became blind as a result of this false imprisonment. When he died, he had only one undeveloped plot of land to his name.

> 1© Pa Adekule Ajasin was never the same after his eventual release and remained sickly for the rest of his life. Whe he died, he never had any property anywhere in the world except the one he had built from his sweat as long term teacher and school principal in Owo township.

> 2. He put in place a retroactive law that killed three men, innocent men in my book, by public execution. He left untouched an alleged well-known drug baron in Ibrahim Babangida who later overthrew his government.

> 3. He jailed Nduka Irabor and Tunde Thompson of the Guardian on stories that were factually true under Decree 4. He had told the Nigerian journalists then that it did not matter whether the story reported was true or not.

> 4. He supervised the smuggling of 53 suitcases filled with cash througth the MMA against the protests of General Tunde Idiagbon and ironically, Abubakar Atiku (then Comptroller of Customs who later became the Vice President and a compromised politician himself). This smuggling of the suit cases were supervised by his ADC, Col. Mustapha Jokolo, now Emir of Gwandu.

> 5. He jailed Fela Anikulapo -Kuti on trumped up charges under emergency law which prompted the sentencing Judge to confess that he was ordered to do so and apologised to the late musician. It was Buhari's administration that said it has "decided to deal with this Fela problem once and for all."

> 6. He convinced all the northern political leaders against allowing the National Identity Card program because according to him, this would unravel the myth of Northern population majority

> 7. He is an Islamic fundamentalist, the Bin Laden of Nigeria, who told his northern followers never to vote for anyone who was not a muslim.

> 8. He is a coup plotter.

> 9. He has never been able to account to Nigerians what he did with the 20 billion Naira of the Petroleum Trust Fund of which he was the chairman under Sani Abacha.

> 9(a) He has not been able to point to any project that he prosecuted outside the Northern Nigeria with the so-caled Trust Fund.

> 10. He was in full support of all the atrocities of Sani Abacha against the Nigerian people. There is no single record of his criticism of Sani Abacha during those dark days when Nigeria was on the precipice. It shows that he is a patriot of convenience and as such unfit to lead the country.

> 11. Buhari, as part of his tribalistic practices placed President Shagari under house arrest inside a palatial mansion in Ikoyi, while he locked up Shagari's Vice, Alex Ekwueme in Kirikiri Prison. Shagari is Hausa/Fulani like him while Alex Ekwueme is an Igboman.

> 12. Ikemba Emeka Ojukwu, another Igboman who returned from 13years exile just a little over a year then was as well locked up in Kiri Kiri Prison by mean-hearted Buhari.Up till today we are not told what was Emeka's offence.

> 13. Busari Adelakun died of ulcer because Buhari refused him to be taken out of prison for immediate medical attention. The then Governor of Ogun State,Bisi Onabanjo suffered similar fate which we were told led to his untimely death.

> 14. Buhari ransacked the house of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and confisticated his International Passport. Which civilized democratic society would elect the likes of Buhari as President, the same individual who overthrew an elected President? Never!

> 15. Plus Buhari having Sam Mbakwe in jail, he went for one of Mbakwe's wives. He established himself again for what he was/is letting Mbakwe receive in jailhouse news of the death of another of Mbakwe's two wives. One (I can't remember his name now; Odenigbo?) also died in jail.

> 16. Buhari's henchman and sponsor, CPC governorship candidate for Kano State, is Mohammed Abacha, the same person that had/ran a personal killing squad, co ordinated the killing of Kudirat Abiola & attempted to kill Ibru; and also stashed money in underground tanks, all less than 13 years ago, Nigerians have very short selective memory. Shame!

> 17. Buhari discriminated against persons from other ethnic groups/faiths; and that as PTF Chairman, he employed an overwhelming number of Fulani/Hausa/Moslem people; to the detriment of other groups and concentrated PTF projects in the North. If in doubt read El Rufai's testimony where he wrote about Katsina boys who used the money they made at PTF to bankroll Yar'Adua's election as Katsina Governor in 1999.

> 18. Buhari is unforgiving! When he "took over" by coup in 1983, he even remembered an article written a very very long time ago by Bisi Onabanjo ('The Mallams are coming') and a later one in which Onabanjo wrote that people should watch out for that "gangly officer from the north" after Buhari gave a no holds barred speech at some Army function where he was reported to be very openly pro-Fulani and pro-Islam to the exclusion of all else and also talked about termination of democratic rule. For that, Onabanjo got one of the harshest jail terms and treatments.

> 19. Buhari's intolerance is worse than Obasanjo's. When he was adopted as the ANPP's candidate on the night of the party's Primaries (without prior warning to the other candidates) and a few of them protested, Buhari got up and made a speech that those people must be disciplined. He subsequently spoke on BBC's "hard talk" and he frightened his listeners and the interviewer with his archaic and fundamentalist intolerant views. His understanding and articulation is very much in doubt.

> 20. The evil genius, IBB and his crew similarly ran rings around Buhari. On the 10th anniversary of Abacha's demise, Buhari said that Abacha stole nothing from Nigeria! Despite millions of Dollars recovered from banks around the world and the Abacha family signing a formal agreement to return over $1 billion dollars, Buhari still said that Abacha's stealing remains an unproved allegation!!!! Why? Because Abacha set Buhari up like an emperor and let him use oil money from the Niger Delta to develop the North without supervision or questions.

> 21. Buhari snubbed the same Nigerians he now wants their votes by refusing to appear before Justice Oputa Truth and Reconciliation Panel, despite the fact that Buhari knew how inportant reconciliation is to the stability of democracy. Buhari has never apologised at anytime.

> 22. Buhari executed Lawal Ojuolape (30), Bernard Ogedengbe (29) and Bartholomew Owoh (26) for trafficking in drugs. To put it quite plainly, one of those three - Ogedengbe - was executed for a crime that did not carry a capital forfeit at the time it was committed. At the time Ogedengbe committed the crime it did not carry that punishment. If we must live as civilised citizens we must go by the rules. Article 11.2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads: "No one shall be held guilty of any penal offence on account of any act or omission WHICH DID NOT CONSTITUTE A PENAL OFFENCE, under national or international law at the time it was committed. NOR SHALL A HEAVIER PUNISHMENT BE IMPOSED THAN THE ONE THAT WAS APPLICABLE AT THE TIME THE PENAL OFFENCE WAS COMMITTED. Killing people with retroactive laws is not the civilised thing to do - and for as long as we will have people who refuse to see the truth only because their heroes are itching to rule when they have not purged themselves we will continue to wallow in misery.

> If Nigerians reward dangerous, insensitive, dishonest, mean, cruel, partial, egoistic, religious fundamendalist, conscienceless human being like MOHAMMADU BUHARI with the Presidency of Nigeria with his kind of track record, then why do we still wonder why Nigeria has not and will not make it?

> I cannot in good conscience support Buhari's candidacy on the above grounds. I wish we have intelligent people who know what democracy means. I wish we have civilized minds. However, I am 100 percent sure that Buhari will never again rule Nigeria.

> For the good of Nigeria, vote any other candidate, but SAY NO TO BUHARI!
Re: ACN And CPC Have Failed To Reach An Agreement by seguno2: 9:21am On Apr 14, 2011
ACN did what was best for their self-preservation. why would anyone align with a holier-than-thou pretentious brute. A crying bully who can see his worstest loss in his three presidential bids staring him in the face in less than 72 hours.

When he brags about his much vaunted prowess in “jailing corrupt public officials,” Buhari only exposes his lack of full understanding of what corruption is. Corruption is not all just about embezzled money. Corruption is also about power, and even more so, one can argue. By that yardstick, Buhari is the most corrupt himself: he usurped and misused power in Nigeria to perform dreadful and even criminal actions.

A symptom of power-corruption is using illegally obtained power with utter disregard for constituted law and order and elected government. When Buhari carried out a military coup to sack an elected government, he indicted himself as power-corrupt. In bragging about it, he makes the second point about power-corruption—arrogance. Years after essentially despoiling and destroying an elected government, Buhari insists to the hapless peoples residing in Nigeria that he will continue to try to seek the office of the president of Nigeria, no matter how many times he has to try! The "subtexted" message is that if military coups were still possible in Nigeria, he would have used that avenue once again to achieve his goal.

Military decrees are not laws: they are in fact military orders that must be carried out by civilian-citizenry, on penalty of death. Buhari set about issuing decrees and ensuring their enforcement In Nigeria between 1983 and 1985. During that period, due process, proper legal representation and process, presumption of innocence until formal trial and conviction, were trashed and would never be practiced as Buhari wielded the power of life and death over each single person and all living in Nigeria then.

The most unimaginable occurrence is when Buhari issued his Military decrees and then made them retroactive. Based on such cruel and unconscionable act and display of abuse of power, Buhari ordered the execution of persons who had earlier been convicted of drug offences well before his “regime terrible” locked down Nigeria.*The death of such prisoners as such is in fact an act of murder by a psychopath, Buhari. Corruption with power does not get much worse than that.

Buhari registered Nigeria as an Islamic nation with the OIC—the Organization of Islamic Conference, reserved for Muslim countries. There was no discussion with the rest of non-Muslim Nigeria who constitute over half of the population and who would have bluntly said “No” to that. But, Buhari “had the power” and exercised it, without qualms. How else would one define “power-drunk” and corruption with power?

Buhari had a chance to show remorse or at least render some accounting and accountability for his inimical activities as a Military ruler of Nigeria at the Oputa Commission, an event reminiscent of the much successful Truth and Reconciliation commission post-Apartheid South Africa. But in sheer arrogance and contempt, Buhari refused to show up. Not quite satisfied, he went to court after intimidating the judge(s) and won an injunction successfully prohibiting the government of Nigeria from ever making the Oputa findings public.

A society is always threatened by corruption in any form, but power-corruption is invariably more frightening, devastating and lethal than money-corruption. Yet, there is even more danger when a society fails to recognize that power-usurpation and abuse is a form of corruption—and deadly at that. This failure results in the unthinkable: that given their records, persons like Buhari would actually show their faces to contest for public office, and that society would tolerate that.

Today, the peoples living in Nigeria will be tempted to vote for any candidate who claims that he is an “anti-corruption agent.” Characteristically gullible or otherwise influenced by other criteria, many will actually vote for such a candidate without even checking out the candidate’s past (and without learning from previous votes for such candidates). When corruption is narrowly defined around money, the peoples are lulled into accepting such blinders and fail to realize that power-corruption is a more lethal form of corruption. Buhari is probably correct by claiming that he did not touch any public funds; that does not make him any less corrupt, however, considering how he acquired power and how he used it in Nigeria. All it proves is that money corruption and power-corruption can exist independently.

But, the greatest failing of the peoples living in Nigeria is the inability to realize that the main problem of Nigeria is not corruption. When a society has “meaningful options,” the incidence of corruption is low, and the chances of getting caught and convicted are high. Nigeria does not offer such meaningful options; it has actually worked very hard to restrict them, and Buhari represents one class of those who have made it so.

Predictably—and unfortunately—there is nothing coming out of the current elections that is going to change this picture. Unless, of course, the peoples living in Nigeria demand and get a restructuring of Nigeria along the lines of Self Determination: that’s when their options will open up and their potential, collectively and individually, will be fulfilled and even surpassed.

" It is very clear now that Bakare is not afterall interested in the so called Change Nigeria he has been trumpeting but merely seeks his own relevance and personal gains. His mantra all along has been that "Buhari is the man preserved by God for this hour". So my question is; if Buhari is the man according to Bakare, why is he now being the stumbling block when a golden opportunity has been presented them on a platter of gold? Maybe he did not hear from God afterall because any slim chance that Buhari could have gotten (though would never be enough to defeat GEJ) has been blown by the prophet Bakare himself because of Ego and self centered interest. Nigerians, he has not even been in the game of politics for up to 4 months and he has already imbibed the greed of wicked politicians. And this is even when he has not tasted the powers and lucre of political office. Tell me what will happen if he eventually gets there? I bet this guy would not want to leave like Gaddaffi and Mubarak. He has already shown the signs early enough that he cannot let go of what has been giving to him in collective trust. Nigerians, is this the kind of person we want at the helm of affairs? Big NO. "

I know it will failed again because is already too late now for ACN to give up and join CPC it will be the biggest failure of all time  in fact it would be too silly and miscalculation for a party like ACN who as pulled a surprise by winning more seat for itself to now step down for a party that was not even known by so many and a party who almost not even won a single seat if not for luck that was on their side the humiliation would have bo so much.

If ACN bow out for CPC or form a merger to push Buhari forward then they are a loosers of all time it is CPC that need to bow out for ACN or should be looking for ACN to merge with and not ACN merge with CPC and for Buhari to lead that is totally wrong, unhealthy and ACN will loose so many party members for sure.

What am actually waiting for is to see how the much noisy  CPC will win, I want to see how they will work out the Miracle to beat GEJ(pdp) and Ribadu(Acn) I want to see how that miracle will happen becase I can see CPC fans are so adamant like their two presidential candidate(Buhari & Bakare).

And this:

As a fan of Buhari (but wont vote for him) I must confess your article is compelling. I am fixated with the fact that Buhari is not associated with money corruption. Your argument that power corruption is equally dangerous is arguable. I believe that power corruption will go in hand with money corruption for most leaders. Rare people will have only power corruption just like Hitler. This has opened my eyes. Buhari could actually bring economic prosperity and like Hitler will go into absurd ideologies. Remember Hitler brought prosperity to Germany after the first world war. With the economy booming and hoards of men chanting 'sai Buhari', he could go into psychopath mode.
Enough said. I'm now scared!!!!!!!

Just that Buhari won't boom any economy to begin with, as he has no clue about economics. What we can expect from him is, "NEPA is not working? Nationalist it! "People are stealing at the borders? Close the border."

"God has used Bakare's refusal to sign the post dated resignation letter to stop an unholy alliance of two strange bed fellows who were destined to fail. Tinubu was selfishly pushing for this alliance because he wants to be vice president in the alliance. His wife has already been made a senator elect. Jonathan can never act this way. Nigerians, please open your eyes and see through the deceit of these selfish politicians. I am glad that with the collapse of this ACN/CPC alliance, ACN will likely join other parties to mobilise their supporters to vote massively for Jonathan. Jonathan has a Goodluck indeed"

adros84:Thank God the talks failed. It was an alliance to get some people into power at all costs. I do not like the PDP and would like to see the end of them but, I hate alliances that bring strange bedfellows together. Such marriages of convenience will ultimately collapse and lead to political insecurity. Let Ribadu run alone. If he loses, let him wait for another time. He is still young. Let Buhari run alone. If he loses, let him retire from politics. He is already old and has tasted power once. Let Jonathan run alone. If he loses, let him become a statesman after all he has seen it all - Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice-President and President. Let as many candidates as possible run . let each man bear his own cross. Let none try to ride on the back of another. God bless Nigeria.

I wonder why we all so negatives about issues here, it would be better we all understand topic and then reply appropriately if you cant think of good response it will be better we silent and read other people's point of view, but we like abusing ourself, we like tribalism, honestly we never have any better President or Head of State check your record yea for 8 months people says Jonathan not good, for 1year and Six Month people complain about Buhari Military rule, Yaradua died we complained, Murtala Died we complained, Sonekan did 3months we complained, check history Aguiyi Ironsi had his bad time, i wont talk about Obasanjo's double rules, and i wont talk about IBB, Abacha and Abdusalam who stole more than.

I thought we should we thinking in line of these what makes us thing that if Ribadu will get there today he will do all what you want, Do you think if Shakarau gets there today he will do what we want and we will be happy? Do you think if Buhari come back today he will do and be sincere as he promised and he will not climb on Rule of Law and he might to get impeached for stupidness from NASS full of PDP? Do we think who he will work with will not set him up or get more corrupt on his name as in the case of others but it will be blame on him? Do we think if Jonathan continues all of us that want him there for the little he has done we will not come back and said we were all disappointed? that   we will get all we want from him?

Please Nairaland lets pause and rethink and stop crucifying one another here that can not bring solution to any of them getting there and doing the right thing, this should inform us that even if we all get there we might do worst which means there are forces on that position we need to battle that forces that never make all of them do good or satisfied us or we need to pause and rethink if we are the problem of their failure, perhaps the way we castigate them, abuse them, insult them and we still expect such people to deliver to us, it is about believe, if you never believe in anything anything cannot work for you, if you beileve in Buhari it might work for you, If you believe in Ribadu he might work for you, if you beleive in Sharau he might work for you, if you believe in Goodluck he might work for you, NOW WHAT AND WHO DO YOU BELIEVE IN? but dont castigate others just believe in your own

I would advice my South Westerners not to judge Buhari from the distance observation they all have for him, I can say virtually nothing or little about Bakare but i often wonder is this not the same silly pastor that always saw doom for Nigeria right from the years of Obasanjo's government? He gradually made himself "relevant" in Nigeria's politics because he wanted people to perceive him as a genuine nationalist. Well, that's by the way but Buhari is a complete extremist, unforgiven and hardhearted. If anyone one of you care to be in the north and see the kind of hoodlums that are making it a do or die affair if Buhari is not voted or does not win. We shouldn't be compelled to vote for him at all cost. Some places in the north, you are not free to express your non support for him else you loose your mouth if not life. If you cannot control your supporters and those within your electorate. Then how do you claim to be able to govern a country successfully. I really would like to talk more about this fellow, but its obvious to me that this generation seems to be forgetful about the past. Does it mean that ONLY Buhari can make Nigeria better out of a population of 150million plus? We don't need their age experience anymore, we need practical experience. To be contd,

We don't need their age experience anymore, we need practically experience. To be contd

It's the best idea that leadership of ACN stick and go on with their presidential candidate to avoid repetition of what happen in 2003 to AD. A wise man suppose not to fall into the same hole twice.

This official stand is good.

I love Buhari, bt will not vote for him,
Bakare once said he'll open a can of worms against Ribadu, till nw, he has not opened anything,
I do not admire or like GEJ cuz he is a toothless bull dog,

ACN is still a party to beat cuz they r organized, they ve an aim & they fight it out, see hw they tried to work wih CPC & CPC frustrated it,

see http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/acn-how-buhari-bakare-frustrated-alliance/89598/

, it's quite unfortunate, those we think r honest may not be as holy as they claim, we all know dat Tinubu may not be clean, bt he's still a devil we know & one that likes us,

Ribadu built EFCC, Fola Adeola built GTB!

Well said , you need to come to the North and see how Buhari supporters are behaving. Pls ask the Christians in Jos and Bauchi some questions before you vote for Buhari.IF BUHARI WINS, EXPECT BOKO HARAM ACTIVITIES TO BE LEGALIZED. Pls cast your votes for either Ribadu or Goodluck but not Buhari.
God !I can't believe I actually wanted to vote for Buhari some days ago. Thank God it is not too late.

General Buhari is honest man but not sophisticated. He didn't manage his opportunities well. This time suppose to be for him, but lack how to handle situation. I believe the people with him are partly not very honest with him and  partly intoxicated by his personality. I understand is tears.

On political scene they score below average.

But at the meeting involving the ACN leaders, Buhari and the NPLF, the plans of the Northern leaders fell apart.
It was gathered that Tinubu and the ACN governors were not happy with the involvement of Babangida in the negotiation.
A top member of the CPC, said, “They reason that Babangida has not atoned for his sin of annulling the June 12 presidential election won by Chief Abiola. If he is campaign for himself or anybody, he must first apologise to the people of South-West, who is seeking his votes.”

Just imaging involving Babangida in issue that concern Yorubas without him apologies for june 12, it would be suicidal for the leaders of ACN.
