Foreign Affairs / Re: Al Jazeera Shut Down In Israel by quatrevingtdix: 9:39am On Oct 21, 2023
Ekenev2:
The public opinion on war has always been influenced by the powerful media narrative. The Qatari state-backed Al-Jazeera, the Turkish-owned TRT World, has been sympathetic to Palestine in their report, while Western media agencies like CNN, BBC, and Fox News has leaned toward Israel.

Depending on how you seed it, Israel is protecting its interest. War is not about justice and injustice, it's about interest
Hmm šŸ¤” whatā€™s your take on ukraine russia war?
Family / Re: Advice To A Father by quatrevingtdix: 2:24pm On Jul 15, 2023
Yes you need to pay as long as what you are streaming online is live, be it : BBnaija, channels tv, BBC, CNN, Arise TV, youtube livestreaming. Anything live you pay the TV license fee šŸ˜

The only thing you get to watch without paying is netflix, prime disney paramount and other pay on demand streaming platforms.
Acidosis:

You pay to stream live programmes in the UK? What about YouTube livestreaming?
LadyPortable:

Thanks for the in-depth analysis. Can you throw more light on this tv license stuff. I'm confused. I got a non smart tv and virgin media broadband and has been worried if I need a tv license.the tv has got channels like itv and bbc

Ilekokonit:
What if his wife loses her job in the UK and both he and their child are dependent on the now lost income and he has already closed his CERTAIN source of income in Naija

I personally will not subscribe to anyone father or mother being a nanny or stay at home parent as you tend to lose your skills by staying at home for an indeterminate period of time.

So, if he moves to the UK, he has to find a job fast so that he puts some money on the table every month end especially since child care in the UK is upwards of Ā£1,000 per month talk less of the brutal cost of living crisis EVERYONE in the UK is currently facing.

His wife's Ā£2,035 net pay per month can not pay the monthly child care costs + rent + gas + water + electricity + council tax + TV licence + broadband + baby costs + phone bills + feeding + clothes + toiletries + a little something kept aside for emergency bills that WILL surely pop up now and again especially with a baby in tow - baby medicine, pampers, food, winter clothes etc, etc.

He should think hard and fast about this as the grass always looks greener when looked at from the other side of the fence and does he want to jack in certainty for uncertainty. ??

ā€œHow about if she looses her job in the uk?ā€. Okay, how about if he looses his source if income in Nigeria?.
Come on everything is a risk, you donā€™t live scared of taking decision because of if it fails, you take it and work against it failing while planning for whatever life throws at you.

Everybody keeps shouting bills bills, haba! Its like most people here dont want people to come or people in Nigeria are half informed.
Manchester for instance, there are houses(2 bedrooms for instance) that are 800-900 amd 1k tops
Monthly budget:
900 - house
African food(which is the most expensive from african stores) - 200

Light and gas -200
Council tax - 150 tops

Diapers - 2 maxi pack(pampers which is the most expensive) for 22pounds at morrisons, enough for a month.

Baby food - 34pounds )thats if its just baby food no breastmilk)

Total - 1500
If you want to spoil yourself enter primark shop and shop -300gbp for tourself and baby.

This is from experience.
Why TV license when youā€™re still hustling netflix never do you?(you donā€™t have to pay tv license if you watch netflix and prime and donā€™t stream live channels like bbc, channels and the likes)

Abeg lets stop discouraging people from coming please, @o.p Iā€™m just giving you the info needed to make an informed decision.

Most people here shout bills bills, ehn UK is expensive, and they havenā€™t gone back to Naija. The cheapest thing here is food stuff. So live according to your income and you should be fine, but donā€™t all come if thereā€™s no accommodation ready. Make plans.

Whatever you do let the primary applicant come first and get accomodation especially sorted first. To see accomodation for UK as a family is not beans. I personally won't be comfortable leaving my 3 months old baby behind, but if your wife and you are in agreement to do that no problem. I have seen people who did and they are also doing fine.
And you have to leave Naija mentality of not being a hands on father behind. If you don't want to spend all your salaries on child minders you have to babysit too as a father.

Lastly if you are doing very well financially as a family and do not have any other reason for seeking to japa apart from seeking more money then would say you all should stay back in Naija and enjoy your money.
You both need to talk indeptand reach a compromise
You have said it all. *excuse my typo and lack of punctuation*
There are lots of things to consider in this situation
1: The family staying together, but it meeds to happen at the best time. So she better comes first, get her first salary, pay slip and her BRP( which will remember her to be eligible to rent). Thats when they can get a reasonable place to stay or else airbnb mighy end up taking all their hard earned cash (most airbnbs have strict policies against babies, they prefer you to have dos over children here) . When sheā€™s gotten accomodation sorted everyone comes over

The baby: taking care of children in the UK isnt easy( Talking from experience cos Iā€™ve got two) especially for immigrants without family support. So its best for the baby to remain with the father in Nigeria before things get sorted (at least there should Be some social support system in Naija, either family or something)

Finances: the 30k is just 2k/month take home after tax. Main thing is rent and bills which might gulp about 1500 leaving her with 500 left dich Iā€™snt bad. So when the husband comes, depending on his skills set, he could take some work from home jobs or weekend job( at least something flexible as he has the advantage, because he has got a dependent visa and the companies ainā€™t sponsoring him which gives him some flexibilit) So he could earn a reasonable ammount, of which if he isnt earning much could be tax free if about 1k/month.
The reason for the flexible job is so as to be able to assist with child care, as it needs both partners to be involved here in the Uk as immigrants. I paid about 55gbp per day in a nursery at one time. or it could be worse you pay 10gbp per hour for someone to come watch your child at home, while you are earning 12.5quid per hour(minimum wage), though my case was different I was earning okay and my wife as well but still it hurts to pay that much for child care, when your child only hours there to eat sleep and catch viral illnesses.

So yeah, the journey is one you should take because Ild encourage it as it is one i have taken and donā€™t have regrets. However it needs you both to help each other and understand each other.

PS: if itā€™s all these carework jobs though through an agent, please do your due diligence because there have been lots of problems recently as people ainā€™t getting enough work to do to meet up there minimum weekly hours due to Nigerian agents greed.

Health / Resident Doctors Tell Their Story by quatrevingtdix: 6:36pm On Jun 09, 2020
*THE RESIDENT DOCTORS TELL THEIR STORY*

Morning, afternoon and evening.

Nigerians, it's 7days to a national indefinite strike by resident doctors. This strike is avertable if the government is serious. We would like you to take a walk with us on some of these issues.

The government often runs to the court of public opinion to blackmail the doctor, they quote percentages to hoodwink the uninitiated, misquote our oaths to make us look bad but that shall continue no more.

It is now time to tell our story, as it is often said, until lions learn to tell their stories, it is only the tale of the hunter's valor that we shall be inundated with. We shall not keep quiet, we shall shout and energize the bellow to fire the cause.

A quick stop at Ogun state reveals a cantankerous leader who starts a charade on air of how he increased the hazard allowance of the doctors in the state from N5,000 to the folds of 300%. What he actually did was to increase the monies to N15,000 and then tax it to put N12,000 in those doctors' pockets.

Dwelling on that, we shall attempt to do a comparative arithmetic with this man. The doctors there had by themselves been providing Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) worth at least 200% (N30,000) per month of his supposedly new untaxed hazard allowance. In the event that they had hazardous exposure to the hepatitis B for example, the doctors by themselves had been procuring post exposure prophylaxis worth at least 800% (N120,000) of his supposedly new untaxed hazard allowance. *Mr Teacher, don't teach us nonsense!*

Let's leave our medical skills and remind you that we were quite adept in arithmetics. What you have provided falls extremely and abundantly short of what those health workers have been giving and you honestly had no iota of justification to display such uncouth theatrics.

We shall leave the prince to his lot and delve into other implications of work and its appurtenances during this pandemic so that you can be the judge of who is really being fair to whom.

Apparently the rotten mango didn't fall far from the tree, the federal government have started their own drama too. Corona sauntered in and the health workers were asked to take on the task head-on. The implications of being a health worker were this; while others stayed at home during the lock down, health workers went to work. While others were at less risk of a novel unseen enemy, the health workers commingled with it. Then when it was time to pay for work done, you paid everyone (health workers and others) what they were used to getting as if nothing changed!

The health workers that went to work apparently incurred extra expenses, faced greater health risks etc. and in the heat of it you had promised an increased hazard allowance, but apparently that promise can be likened to that of a man who says anything to have his way when his corey is raging. Now FG wants to stall and if possible renege on a signed agreement. Isn't that unheard of? Evidently not in our beloved country.

The antics of the federal government would not work this time around, your machiavellian arrangement will not be given a chance. We have seen first hand how monies since 2014 are yet to be paid because we were patient and attempted to be understanding with people who could not keep promises, but not this time and never again. The government must be held accountable for this agreement and the time is now. There is no better time for a government to prioritise health, health workers and health institutions.

It is important to quickly reiterate the oath that government and its acolytes are quick to quote to cause a stalemate. The hippocratic oath enumerates proper ethics and states clearly that the doctor should enjoy the practise of her art. The oath
is often misconstrued as saying a doctor should not receive what is rightfully hers, IT DOESN'T SAY SO!

A doctor already has so much empathy and considers life before money but should that be a reason to continue to malign, sidestep and be inhumane to doctors? Doctors go to the same market as everyone, they send their children to schools like everyone and no one says 'Oh, that's a doctor, let's let her have these goods or those services for free!' No, not at all, in fact the prices are often hiked with a pseudo-assumption that doctors are rich, where is the fairness in that?

People of Nigeria, join us in telling the government that enough is enough, we aren't asking for newspaper allowances, car allowances, house allowances, wardrobe allowances just hazard allowances, is that too much to ask?

15-06-2020, we shall down-tool albeit sadly should government be unwilling to do the needful. We want to work, let them do their part.

The good people of Nigeria, we have come to tell you our stories so that you can be the adjudicator.

Morning, afternoon and evening again.
