Within the past two or three years, we have seen tremendous changes in the smartphone industry. Manufactures ramp up specifications, sometime beating what we have on our laptops. Innovations are happening at breath taking speeds, new phones are launched almost daily, and the competition is cutthroat. User needs have also evolved with the trend – they’re smarter now. What started with buying whatever is thrown into the market, has evolved to people going for “better value for money”. In this dispensation, mid-range phones are kings and the reasons for this are not far fetched. First of all, they’re cheaper. Secondly, they’re performers too. Why buy the expensive flagships when another phone for less than half the price would also meet your needs. Manufacturers on their part are constantly breaking the barriers between flagship and mid-range smartphones (Moto X Style and OnePlus One rings a bell). In fact, the barrier is getting thinner by the day. With this boom of value-for-money smartphones, there’s something we’ve overlooked. Who is powering this trend? Who is behind this revolution? I’ve got one answer for you. MediaTek. Ever since this company came into existence, they have caused a kind of disrupt in the smartphone industry. This was achieved by introducing cheaper processors in the market. Snapdragon had it all before, but MediaTek came fighting from the bottom upwards. The company has constantly evolved and keep improving their chips such that they can rival the more expensive chips from Qualcomm (on some fronts). That you use an affordable smartphone today, you owe big thanks to MediaTek. Remember the days Nokia used to cut our necks MediaTek is growing and pushing the boundaries towards better performing affordable smartphones. Top manufacturers aren’t ignoring them too. We’ve seen the likes of LG, HTC, Sony, and the rest using chips made by them to manufacture lower priced smartphones. The company has also penetrated the smartwatch market, already they’re powering most of the cheap smartwatches we see now. I won’t be surprising to hear that MediaTek is a more profitable firm than most of these phone makers that even use their chips these guys are working hard in silence and smiling to the bank, while the rest of the tech world overlooks. Let them ride on the success their hard work deserves. A raid by narcotics agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, has led to the discovery of 137kgs of cannabis and the arrest of two suspects in Abia State. The NDLEA commander in the state, Mr. Dele Akingbade, said the two suspects, 35-year-old Fidelis Ogbonna and 68-year-old Ududem Nwoke, were major hemp distributors in the state. Akingbade said a cannabis warehouse run by Nwoke was discovered during the raid. It was there the NDLEA discovered nine bags of cannabis weighing 87kg. When Ogbonna was arrested, a vehicle he used for the distribution was also impounded. 50kg of cannabis ready for distribution was reportedly recovered by the NDLEA agents in the process. Fidelis, a native of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, said he is married with three children. He explained that he could not go beyond primary school level in his education and it has forced him to rely on the proceeds of the cannabis business to fend for his family. “My father died when I was a little child and I have suffered. A friend introduced me to the cannabis business. I use the proceeds to take care of my family. I also use my personal car to distribute it to avoid suspicion,” he said. Nwoke also gave a similar confession. He said he had been sustaining his family with cannabis proceeds. The suspect, a native of Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State told investigators that he has no formal education and is married with two children. “Cannabis sale is my only source of livelihood,” he said. Officials told Saturday Punch that his son, who had been assisting his father in the cannabis trade, is currently on the run. According to a statement by NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the suspects will soon be charged to court for unlawful possession and trafficking of cannabis contrary to Section 11 sub-section C and D of the NDLEA Act. lalasticlala, ishilove, seunHe quoted the acting Chairman of the agency, Mrs. Roli Bode-George, as expressing optimism that the agency’s anti-drug strategies would continue to yield positive results in the country. “These arrests and seizures are products of painstaking surveillance and the public should look forward to a systematic dismantling of drug trafficking cartels in the days ahead,” Bode-George said. Wizkid dumped MTN for their rival, GLO, months ago, after an undisclosed misunderstanding, and the superstar has since been promoting his new brand, especially with the ongoing GLO Slide and Bounce events spread across the country. Yesterday, the Star Boy artiste and his teamflew to Enugu for another round of the concert, but on arriving at the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Wizkid and his team were surprised to learn that their pickup waiting at the airport was a rickety, over-branded truck, the type mainly used for street sales and promotions. lalasticlala, seun, ishiloveNET newspapers reports that Wizkid calmly climbed into the truck, but one of his aides refused the ride and instead, chattered a cab, got out their luggage which had been stuffed in the back of the truck, and they left the airport, leaving their ‘official’ pickup behind. It is unclear if the ‘lowkey’ request was made by Wizkid himself who is famous for travelling with much fanfare, but NET also reports that their pickup had no security details; it was just the driver. The sudden death of Prince Audu Abubakar, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in last Saturday’s governorship in Kogi state, has left many unanswered questions. One such question is who will succeed him? The APC candidate who died shortly after the election was leading the polls with 240,827 votes, against the 199, 514 votes polled by Governor Idris Wada, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election inconclusive. Audu is likely to be replaced by James Abiodun Faleke, his running mate in the gubernatorial elections but it may not be an easy ride for him. lalasticlala, seunThe APC might have to conduct another round of primaries and Faleke may be put forward as one of the candidates. Read below… My name is Akinmuda Oluwafemi, presently a 500level medical student of the college of Medicine, university of lagos. October 19 2007, at the age of 15, I alongside Mercy Richards, Yetunde Brown and Henry Akahara represented Nigeria at the House of Commons, London to participate in the world slavery youth debate. We returned back to Nigeria with Gold medals. An Evidence of good performance and representation of the federal republic of Nigeria. Only Henry Akahara was granted scholarship by the lagos state government under the administration of Governor Raji fashola to study in the UK… he claimed to have been the only one that went for the debate and won the medal and the lagos state government without making further investigations granted him. I remember, the director of the British council called a meeting with we all and our parents to be quiet that in due time we would be called. Till now, nothing. I’m just reminiscing, next year I would be a doctor, do I want to serve this country?Does this country have anything to offer? Even when you go the extra mile to represent and honour this country at different levels and you still are not appreciated, I ask myself is it worth it being a Nigerian? On second thoughts however, is it just the PDP government that was so selfish and corrupt and won’t recognise an award for excellence from the highest level “The Queen of England Herself” courtesy LORD John Prescott? Is it worth is being a Nigerian Google “kemishia Kelly” she was a participant, ever since recognised by Jamaica as a participant. Even wikipedia recognises her. All other people that participated in the debate today are recognised for their excellence and hold strong posts in their various countries. And here I am, just reminiscing. I just want all Nigerians to read this, and think of it over and over…. So in all I just want this to go public, and let all Nigerians feel my pain, and lookout for this APC administration. Would they prove me wrong about my feeling as a Nigerian? Do they appreciate excellence?? Time would tell… Source: http://examhall.net/home/the-queen-of-england-recognised-my-performance-but-nigeria-did-not-young-nigerian-laments/ |
