No fewer than 2,000 commercial sex workers in
Awka, the Anambra State capital, have concluded
arrangements to go on strike on Wednesday,
following the demolition of their “settlement” beside
the cattle market at Amansea Awka North Local
Government area of the state.
The State Urban Development Board stormed the
place at about 3.12pm on Monday with over 50
armed police personnel, alleging that the brothels
were being used a hideouts by kidnappers and
other criminals.
The commercial sex workers quickly mobilised and
set the remaining structures at the cattle market
ablaze shortly after the demolition, accusing the
ASUDEP officials of trying to “give a dog a bad
name in order to hang it”.
The leader of the sex workers, who gave her name
as Rachael, during an interview, described the
action of the government officials as wicked and
inhuman for destroying their “business centre
without notice”.
She added, “We are decent people. We do our
business and go our way. We don’t habour
criminals. After all, most of the people that visit us
are government officials. They want me to expose
them?
“They destroyed our centre and left behind other
huts, kiosks and canteens that belong to the Hausa
cattle traders. Is that justice? Don’t those ones
habour kidnappers and criminals?”
She threatened that the sex workers, numbering
over 2,000, would embark on a four-day strike,
starting from Wednesday, to register their
grievances against the government’s action.
“We want to tell them that they are the people
patronising us,” Rachael said.
The General Manager, ASUDB, Mr. Enemmuo
Chinedu, who led the operation, said the exercise
was part of Governor Willie Obiano’s resolve to rid
the state of criminals.
Chinedu added that the structures demolished
were illegal buildings, where prostitutes,
kidnappers and armed robbers resided.
He said such demolition would be extended to
Nnewi, Onitsha and other urban centres in the
state, where brothels and illegal structures had
sprung up “until all prostitutes in the state
relocate”.
The ASUDEB boss explained that three weeks
notice was given to the occupants to vacate the
area.
He stated, “A lot of prostitutes live around
Amansea cattle market, spoiling our children and
constituting a nuisance in the area and you know
that anywhere there is a brothel, criminals and
kidnappers hover around there.
“In my capacity as the ASUDEB GM, I will ensure
that this doesn’t exist anymore in the state and
our activities are in line with our amiable
governor’s policy on zero tolerance for criminals
and kidnappers in the state.”

President Muhammadu Buhari says he has noted with regret, the allegation by members of the PDP Senate Caucus that his administration is being selective and partisan in its prosecution of the war against corruption. In a statement signed by Garba Shehu, SSA to the President on Media and Publicity, he said the allegation is “false, baseless and totally unjustifiable. “For the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever, we affirm that having made his zero tolerance for corruption clear to all and sundry, President Muhammadu Buhari does not micro-manage or interfere in the daily work of Nigeria’s anti- corruption agencies. “The wild allegation of bias and partisanship in the fight against corruption shouldn’t have come therefore from respected and distinguished members of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “That claim belongs to the past and not the present. Public officials and other leaders accused of corruption by relevant agencies should plead their innocence, not malice. “President Buhari’s unwavering stance is that whosoever is charged with corruption should face the law irrespective of whether they are members of the of All Progressives Congress (APC) , Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or any other political party. “As far as the President is concerned, corruption has no political party, no religion and no ethnic group. “It is important to remind the PDP Senate Caucus and all Nigerians that right from 2003 when he started campaigning for the Presidency of Nigeria, President Buhari consistently promised to do his best to curb corruption in the country. “The President remains wholly committed to fulfilling that promise and will not be deterred from the relentless prosecution of the war against corruption because he remains convinced that, as he has said, ‘unless Nigeria kills corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria'”. He further stated that “the claim by the PDP Senate caucus that President Buhari and his administration are meddling in election petition cases through the Department of State Services (DSS) is also untrue. “The duties of the DSS and other security agencies are clearly spelt out in the laws establishing them. The Federal Government led by President Buhari does not give them instructions regarding their daily operations. “Election Tribunals and the Independent National Electoral Commission in Rivers, Abia and Akwa- Ibom States do not operate under the guidance of the President. “Any individual or group of individuals who think that their legitimate political and civil rights are infringed upon by the DSS or any institution is advised to seek protection and redress under our constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria instead of resorting to baseless allegations against the Buhari Administration. “On President Buhari’s watch, the rule of law, not impunity, shall govern every aspect of life in Nigeria and there will be no room for sentiments, bias and corruption in the application of the laws of the land. “President Buhari also wishes to re-assure all Nigerians that his administration will not discriminate against individuals or groups in the performance of its duties and that favours or patronage will not be dispensed on the basis of votes. “The President remains committed to his Oath of Office and the letters and spirit of the constitution. “He calls on all Nigerians to join hands with him in the fight against insecurity, corruption and impunity in Nigeria so that we can have a country that will prosper for the benefit of all of its citizens and future generations of Nigerians”. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/10/corruption-has-no-political-party-no-religion-and-no-ethnic-group-buhari lalasticlala |
