CrimePhoto: Teacher Shot Dead In Enugu by Quote(op): 9:00pm On Aug 01, 2015
A female teacher identified as Princess Uzoamaka Onyishi, nee Ugwuokwor, 40 pictured above was last week murdered by unknown gunmen while on her way from the swearing in ceremony of new commissioners by Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Vanguard reports that Mrs Onyishi who hailed from Mbu -Akpoti in Isi- Uzo local government area of the state had accompanied a relation of hers , Mrs. Eze, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of her husband, Mr M.E Eze, who was appointed Attorney -General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, when she was attacked and shot in the head by two unknown gunmen. The victim had left the venue of the swearing in ceremony in company of her Kano-based sister, Mrs Ndidiamaka Nnaji, who she dropped off at their family compound along Ogurugu road in Nsukka, picked up her cousin, Miss Jacinta Okwor, who lives with her and headed for her residence at Uwani- Ugwu. She was driving on the lonely road leading to her home when she noticed two men who looked like their motorcycle was bad. In a bid to assist them, she flashed her light at them so they could see what they were doing when suddenly one of the men brought out a gun and immediately shot at her, shattering her skull. The lady who was with the deceased when the ugly incident happened, Jacinta Okwor, narrated their travail. “I was in the vehicle with her when the people emerged and shot her. The two men demanded nothing from her, only pointed gun and shot her instantly. When she was shot, she fell on my laps. I did not know she was dead. When the two men left, I started calling her to wake up for us to go, unknown to me that she was dead. As my efforts to wake her failed, I took the bush part and ran to a house not too far from the scene and informed her husband that aunty has been shot dead just now. The killers did not demand anything from her. I sat with her in the front seat. It was a horrible experience. I have not recovered from the trauma. The cloth I wore that faithful day is still soaked with the blood of my aunty. God will never forgive her killers. I am an apprentice tailor under my sister’s care but now they have killed her. One of the two men was dragging motor cycle and she flashed light to help him only for another to emerge from the bush and shot her, point blank without uttering a word to her.” Uzoamaka Nnaemeka Ugwuokor, the Elder sister to the deceased said "What prompted her killing still remains a mystery to the family that just buried their father, Igwe Gabriel Ugwuokwor. She was driving herself when the incident happened. She never joined politics for one day. Her only business in politics was to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed commissioner. The incident has been reported to Nsukka police division who promptly responded to the call put across to them when she was shot. Both the police and some clergy men assisted in taken her to Bishop Shanahan mortuary where her corpse was deposited. Presently, the matter has been transferred to Enugu state police headquarters. The gruesome killing of our sister has taken the family to a devastating point of agony, mourning, confusion and pity. She is the most endearing in the hearts of members of the family. She was humble, amiable and loving to the people that interacted with her. We are not suspecting any person for now,. Our only prayer is for God to bring out the killers of our sister. She was a mother of five, two boys and three girls. The first is a first year student at UNN, the second will be writing the post UME, the third is in SS 3, the fourth is in SS 1 while the last one is in primary five" she said https://www.newspepa.com/story_images/3314384134201.png

PoliticsPolice Takes Over Pdp's Ekiti Secretariat by Quote(op): 5:35pm On Jul 31, 2015
Police on Friday took over the Peoples Democratic Party Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, as crisis rocking the party in the State took a new twist.
Armed policemen numbering 50, one Armoured Personnel Carrier and operational vehicles were deployed in the Secretariat to prevent attack from the aggrieved members of the State Working Committee, perceived to be working against the interest of the governor.

The State Executive Committee at its meeting presided over by the Acting Chairman, Idowu Faleye, suspended the factional Acting Chairman, Mr. Tunde Olatunde; State Secretary, Tope Aluko; Auditor, Tunji Olanrewaju; Woman Leader, Busola Oyebode and Assistant Secretary, Mr Femi Esan.

The SEC at its Friday meeting also set up a seven-member disciplinary committee to try the suspended members for anti-party activities.
The members are Kolapo Kolade (Chairman), Babade Ige, Animasaun Bamidele, Mrs Lanre Fajuyi, Smart Adebusuyi, Dele Ajibola and Mr. Kola Lawal.

The party’s resolution was read by the State Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, whose appointment was also ratified by SEC.
But speaking earlier at a press briefing, Aluko, who appeared to have got wind of the plot to suspend them, said Faleye remained suspended and lacked powers to preside over any SEC meeting having resigned on May 13.

“Nobody can push me out of PDP. I have invested so much to build the party. But if the party is heading to implosion , then I will take my destiny in my own hands, because nobody has the right to my happiness more than myself.

“PDP is being run in line with the constitution of the party. If this is the case, it came to me as a shock that the party could come up with this action through Jackson Adebayo and Idowu Faleye, who have been suspended by the authentic PDP leaders.

“Though, we owe it a duty to respect the NWC, but for the suspended Chairman to do that, was a deliberate attempt to destroy the party, is rather frightening , embarrassing and also disturbing.”

Aluko told journalists in Ado Ekiti that they would not appear before any panel set up by Faleye as he had ceased to be the chairman.
According to him, 11 of the 14 SWC are not with Faleye so he cannot have the quorum to take any legal action.

He added that Faleye had not been properly registered as a member of the PDP in his ward, having defected from Labour Party.
“If somebody is saying the way to resolve the issue is by suspending others, it shows Faleye is not a core PDP member and does not know the Constitution.

“I’m saying there is no suspension in PDP. I’m the secretary of SEC. For you to convene the meeting of SEC, you must give 48 hours notice. If this is the decision of the faction, it means there is a problem coming to PDP and we will not run from it.

“This was how the problem started at the centre and they thought it would not make impact and now it has made impact,” he said.

PoliticsAgip Pipe Explosion Victims Body Recovered by Quote(op): 11:29pm On Jul 11, 2015
The Bayelsa Police Command on Saturday said it has recovered the remains of the victims of Thursday’s crude oil pipeline explosion within Agip’s field in the state. Asinim Butswat, police spokesperson for Bayelsa Command said on Saturday that two people were still missing and hence not part of the death toll confirmed. Mr. Butswat said search and rescue efforts had since been activated, but yet to yield any results. “On Thursday, June 9th 2015, at about 1600hrs, a pipeline exploded while AGIP Staff were carrying out routine maintenance on Tebidaba-Clough line, in Southern Ijaw LGA,” Mr. Butswat said. “Twelve persons were burnt beyond recognition, which included a soldier on guard duty amongst others. “Four persons were rescued alive and are undergoing treatment, while two persons are still missing. Search for the missing persons is ongoing.” Agip had said on Friday that 12 people died in a pipeline explosion which occurred on Thursday afternoon at Agip’s oil fields in Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa. The officials of Nigerian Agip Oil Company, representatives of the host community and Bayelsa Ministry of Environment were investigating the cause of a recent oil spill in the area when the explosion occurred. According to a statement issued by an Eni spokesperson, Filipo Cotalini, the parent company of NAOC, the cause of the explosion is being investigated. “Eni informs that an explosion occurred yesterday, 9 July late afternoon, at the site of the repair works of the Tebidaba-Clough Creek line, an oil pipeline in Nigeria’s onshore Niger Delta, previously damaged by acts of sabotage,” the firm stated. “The explosion resulted in the death of 12 members of the maintenance team of a local company of services, with 3 others being injured. The causes of the incident are still under investigation by both Eni and the local authorities. The company expresses its deepest condolences to the families involved in this tragic accident.” A source who survived the incident said that an official of the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency was among the dead. http://yesreport..de/2015/07/agip-pipe-explosion-victims-body.html?m=1
PoliticsBuhari’s Cabinet: Nominees Under EFCC Probe Face Tough Hurdles by Quote(op): 11:21pm On Jul 11, 2015
Barring a last-minute change of mind on facts
available to him, President Muhammadu Buhari
may not appoint into his cabinet anybody under
probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC).
It was also gathered yesterday that the President is
under pressure from some eminent Nigerians,
including a former President, to appoint ministers
without further delay.
The President had promised to constitute his
cabinet by September, but the eminent Nigerians, it
was learnt, have advised that any further delay
would be counter-productive.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that
anybody arrested, detained, quizzed, or arraigned
by the EFCC may not make Buhari’s cabinet in line
with his commitment to probity.
It was learnt that the heightening of arrest and
arraignment of some Politically Exposed Persons
by the EFCC and the delay in raising the Federal
Executive Council may be a setback for such
politicians and technocrats eyeing ministerial slots.
One of those who might be affected is the former
Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve
Oronsaye, who was said to be in contention for
either the Chief of Staff to the President or the
Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Oronsaye, who was arrested on Wednesday by the
EFCC and might be prosecuted next week, is
competing for the SGF slot with ex-governors
Rotimi Amaechi, and Ogbonnaya Onu.
It was learnt that Oronsaye is a favoured candidate
of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
It was also gathered that the petition against ex-
Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso before the EFCC was
part of a plot by some politicians to abort plans to
make him a minister.
Some forces and groups were said to have made a
case for Kwankwaso as the next Minister of the
Federal Capital Tertitory.
Others who may have difficulty in serving in
Buhari’s government in any capacity are ex-
governors Timpreye Sylva, Murtala Nyako, Prince
Abubakar Audu, Danjuma Goje.
Although these former governors played a vital role
in delivering their states to APC, they are all under
trial in one form or the other with the cases
dragging for about four to five years.
A reliable source said: “I think that those who have
cases or undergoing investigation with EFCC or
ICPC might not make the ministerial list until the
allegations against them are sorted out.
“Although the law presumes these former
governors innocent until proven guilty by the court,
there may be a challenge in making them
nominees because of public opinion.
“The list is being carefully screened in such a way
that there will be no issues with their clearance in
the Senate.”
Meanwhile, contrary to the alleged recommendation
of the Ahmed Joda Transition Committee, the
President may not be able to appoint 19 ministers.

HealthGuinea Records 16 New Ebola Cases by Quote(op): 8:37pm On Jul 11, 2015
The Guinea National Ebola Coordination Centre has
confirmed that 18 out of the 22 people hospitalised
presently in the treatment centres have tested
positive to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
According to Dr. Sakoba Kéïta, head of the Ebola
Coordination Committee, who said the epicentres
of the Ebola disease remained in Conakry, the
activities in several localities and the involvement
of youths in anti-Ebola committees, contributed
largely to the reduction of new cases.
Keita expressed the determination of the
government to eradicate the deadly disease, which
has left 2,000 dead out of 3,000 reported cases.
Guinea has agreed to distribute food and money to
the families suspected or affected by the Ebola
disease during the 21 days of quarantine.
The World Health Organisation said Guinea, Liberia
and Sierra Leone, which were the worst hit by EVD,
reported thousands dead. The three countries have
increased their meetings recently within the
framework of the Mano River Union, a common
entity to make common decisions in the
perspective to eradicate Ebola. The Guinean
government has taken several measures aimed at
the eradication of the disease.
However, those measures have not achieved the
desired results due to the stubbornness of
populations in several regions where medical
teams were banned from operating, such as the
Low Guinea region, where local populations
attacked, injured or killed medical staff deployed
on the ground because they claimed they did not
believe in the existence of the disease. President
Alpha Condé left Conakry on Tuesday for New
York, with his counterparts Dr Ernest Baï Koroma
of Sierra Leone and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia
to meet with development partners. They
discussed the ways and means to revive the
economy of the three countries, estimated at 8$
billion. The Guinean national health authorities
recently limited entry to the two main hospitals of
the capital Donka and Ignace Deen, where security
has been bolstered. It will be recalled that 5 were confirmed Ebola positive in Liberia some days back.

PoliticsFederation Account: States Lost Billions Under Jonathan, Iweala ' Oshiomhole by Quote(op): 8:29pm On Jul 11, 2015
Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomole
on Friday in Abuja lauded the effort of president
Mohammadu Buhari at ensuring that prudence and
transparency returned in the financial dealings
among the three tiers of federal, state and local
governments in Nigeria.
He accused the past administration of President
Goodluck Jonathan of not remitting most proceeds
of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG accrued
to the government into the consolidated revenue
account, saying that Jonathan’s regime denied the
states what was due to them.
Oshiomhole who spoke with State House
Correspondents shortly after a private meeting with
President Buhari at the Presidential Villa disclosed
that States lost about N10 billion each year during
the 4 years of Jonathan.
He explained that Buhari’s understanding of the
situation was what informed the sharing of about $
1.6 billon amongst the states and local
governments last week.
The governors insisted that the money was not
drawn from the Excess Crude Account, ECA as
believed in some quarters of the society.
He said: “We have always been happy with the
president because he has been very clear from day
one on his campaign promises to putting an end
to impunity flagrant disobedience of law and order.
And he has promised transparency and order. So
it is not just about the bail out but it is completely
a new approach that anybody who is a stakeholder
in the matters involving the funds of the federation
that we all can see through everything. For
example all the noise that has been generated over
what happened last week, there was nothing
extraordinary. What was extraordinary is that the
NLNG has over the years been remmitting funds to
the federal government.”
