At least five persons were feared dead yesterday
when men of the Ogun State Command of Nigeria
Customs Service (NCS) engaged in a shoot out
with smugglers around Oju-Ore area of Ota in the
Ado-Odo/Ota local government area of Ogun State.
LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the Customs
officers have been on the trail of the smugglers
from Owode area in Yewa South local government
before cornering them at Oju-Ore.
An eye witness told our correspondent that the
smugglers had successfully smuggled in three
expensive cars including a 2014 model Range
Rover before the Shootout at Ota.
The gun duel which reportedly lasted for about 45
minutes left the five people injured. They were
rushed to the General hospital in Ota.
A local government worker who spoke with our
correspondent revealed that the smugglers are
popular in the area and worked under a leader
known as Agarawu.
He also alleged that Agarawu has always been
negotiating with the officers to carry out his illicit
trade adding that the negotiation must have gone
bad hence the shooting incident.
The Source explained that it took the intervention
of the State special combined security outfit called
‘OP Mesa’ and men of the Special Anti-Robbery
Squad to douse the tension in the area.
As at the time of filling in this report, the source
explained that men of the Customs and the
smugglers were sighted at the hospital where the
injured were being attended to.
While contacted, the Customs Public Relations
Officer, Usman Abdullahi said he was not aware of
the development but would get back after
investigation.
“I am not aware of that to my knowledge, but I will
do my investigation and findings and whatever it
is, I will get you posted,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi
did not respond to calls put across to his mobile
number, neither did he respond to the text
message sent to him.

No fewer than 12,000 Nigerians, mostly from
Borno, who fled to Republic of Cameroon due to
insurgency attacks, arrived in Nigeria, Mr Sani
Datti, the Spokesman of the National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA), said.
He made the disclosure on Wednesday in Yola.
According to Datti, the returnees are presently
undergoing screening by the Nigerian Immigration
Service (NIS) and other security agencies.
He said “the Agency had so far received 1,121 of
the returnees out of over 12,000 who returned from
Cameroon Republic.
“They are now at Sahuda village in Mubi South
Local Government Area, a border town.
“Out of that number, 650 have been transported to
Borno, while the remaining are still at Malkohi
Internally Displaced Persons camp in Yola.’’
The NEMA spokesman explained that the Agency
was presently providing food and non-food items,
as well as medical cover to the returnees at the
border.
They were waiting for the conclusion of the
immigration and security screening, he said.
Datti confirmed that arrangements had also been
concluded to convey the returnees to a new camp
in Fufore in Adamawa for proper care and
rehabilitation.
He added that “NEMA had also established
contacts with the Borno government over the
returnees who were mostly from the state.’’ (NAN) http://yesreport..com/2015/08/over-12000-displaced-persons-arrive.html lalasticlala ishilove |

A contractor handling the N9.2billion worth of clean cook stoves and wonder bags awarded by the administration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan has sued the Federal Government. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Fatima Mede, revealed this to State House correspondents on Tuesday shortly after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari of the ministry’s activities inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Mede said the contractor approached the court to order the government not to terminate the contract following the emergence of a new administration. The Jonathan-led Federal Executive Council had on November 26, 2014 approved N9.2billion inclusive of Value Added Tax for the procurement of 750,000 units of clean cook stoves and 18,000 wonder bags. The contract was awarded to Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited and there have been several calls on the present administration to terminate the contract. Confirming the legal action, Mede said the ministry had briefed the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation on the development. She said the government would appear before the court to argue its case, however, she did not say if there were plans to terminate the contract. She said “The matter is in court right now, so there is a limit to how I can talk about the issue of cooking stoves. “The contractor took government to court asking the court to grant an injunction for government not to terminate the contract. “We will go there and argue our case, the government will go, we have briefed the Attorney General’s office. “We will present our case on the issue that led to the contractor taking us to court, it will be explained and the court will decide.” Mede said during her team’s meeting with Buhari, the President raised concerns over environmental degradation in the country. She said the President was aware that the sustainability of the country would depend on how well the environment was managed and that the rate of desertification and afforestation in the country was alarming. Stating that over 43 per cent of Nigerians were affected by the effect of desertification. The Permanent Secretary also pointed to the conflict between the herdsmen and farmers because of forced migration. She said the President had directed that to reduce the rate at which wood was being cut down for cooking, the ministry should consider promoting the use of LPG especially in the cities. http://yesreport..nl/2015/08/contractor-sues-fg-over-jonathans-n92bn.html?m=0 lalasiclala |
A suspected church robber, Ehiosun Junior, has been arraigned before an Egor Chief Magistrate Court, over alleged attempt to steal the church offerings during its annual thanksgiving. Testifying under cross examination at the resumed hearing of the case, the Pastor in charge of the church, Christ Apostolic Church, Rev. Igbinigie Anthony, said the alleged thief had broken into the church on 2 previous occasions and made away with N52, 000 cash. The cleric told the court that he had a premonition that the thief would return to steal the thanksgiving collections, so he and the church’s Youth President, who was simply identified as Okoh, decided to sleep in the church that day. He said The first time the suspect broke into the church, he stole N40,000, but I asked the church to pray to God to forgive the thief. “On the 12th, they came back through the same place and stole N9,000 and other offering money. On the 23rd, 12 cans of malt were stolen. “After our thanksgiving on the 30th, I knew the thief will come back because we kept all the monies and items realized inside the church. At about 11:45 pm, I saw a shadow because we switched off all the lights in the church. “I pointed a torch at the person and he ran away towards the direction of the Youth President who caught him. The accused said he was the only one and we called the police who took him away to Okhoro Police Station,” Rev. Igbinigie told the court. He told the court that they discovered that the accused was present at the church thanksgiving and was served food and drinks. The suspect who was arraigned on a 4-count charge, pleaded not guilty. The case has been adjourned to August 17 for further hearing. http://yesreport..com/2015/08/man-caught-stealing-from-church.html?m=0 lalasticlala |
The naira rose further from 222 to 216 at the parallel market on Monday as Deposit Money Banks continued to reject cash deposits in dollars. The Central Bank of Nigeria had said it supported the move by the banks, which was aimed at discouraging speculation on the local currency. The latest rebound of the local currency has made the naira to strengthen by 4.1 per cent from 225 to the dollar on Friday. It was quoted at 245 some weeks ago. On the official interbank market, the naira traded at 199, very close to the central bank’s pegged rate of 197, Reuters reported. The Acting President, Association of Bureaus de Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said, “Banks are rejecting dollar deposits … they are not able to transfer excess liquidity to their correspondent banks abroad, which is restricting importers from using domiciliary accounts.” The naira had weakened at the parallel market to as much as 245 to the dollar on persistent dollar shortages some weeks ago. The CBN had last month limited importers’ access to dollars on the official interbank market to buy a wide range of goods, in order to save its reserves. After the restrictions, importers bought dollars on the unofficial market and deposited them in their bank accounts for transfers abroad, Gwadabe said. But now banks are rejecting cash dollar deposits “due to large speculation on the currency,” the Chief Executive Officer, First City Monument Bank Limited, Mr. Ladi Balogun, said. Lenders will continue to receive dollar transfers from other banks. The restrictions have frustrated companies that need dollars for imports. The central bank has rejected the idea of loosening the curbs, saying it could not adopt an “indeterminate policy” of currency depreciation and that the naira was “appropriately priced” on the interbank market. Gwadabe said there was excess liquidity of around $1bn on the parallel market. A currency analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, said if the trend continued, the naira might rise to as much as 200 against the dollar. He believes the move by the banks is good as it helps to check the activities of speculators. The Head, Investment and Research, Afrinvest West Africa, Mr. Ayodeji Ebo, said the trend would help the central bank to gauge the true value of the naira in the event of a possible devaluation in the near future. “If there is a convergence between the interbank and parallel market, the CBN may possibly review its restrictions imposed on the forex market,” he added. http://yesreport..com/2015/08/naira-now-216-on-banks-dollar-rejection.html?m=0 lalasticlala |
