Austine1213:There are two indians stock exchanges there, totalling US$ 4 trillion, larger than the whole GDP of Africa combined. |
Austine1213:It's funny to see that India's stock exchanges are bigger than every african countries combined, but there is this baseless forumer saying India is among the poorest nations on earth. |
The reason of why our country failed to develop is because we love comparing ourselves with tiny nations with different scale of issues. Many larger countries fare better than us, but we are not comfortable to admit it and tend to belittle their success. We failed to see how poor we are, but dare to say other successful countries "poorest" out of our incompentency to acknowledge the actual fact. |
Austine1213:Or we can use HDI to better determine how far a country's human development has improved China: 0.758 (high human development) Indonesia: 0.707 (high human development) India: 0.647 (medium human development) Bangladesh: 0.614 (medium human development) South Africa: 0.705 (high human development) Nigeria: 0.534 (low human development) Ethiopia: 0.470 (low human development) DRC: 0.459 (low human development) Comparing the asian's giants to african's in terms of overall development would make us a laughing stock for many. To think that there is a clueless person calling an asian country one of the poorest in the world without trying to elaborate his opinion is indeed an evidence of our failed education system. Heck, even Bangladesh has much higher point of HDI than ours. |
LastProphet:What is your definition of "the poorest"? If US$4k is among the poorest, people like you must eat dirt surviving with only US$2k, and that's before pandemic. Nigeria's economy is projected to contract by about 4 percent in 2020, with severe challenges to regaining growth momentum in 2021-2022. There is no way Nigeria's per capita income would surpass US$1.5k in the next three years. Stop making other people laugh by comparing any Asian countries to Nigeria. |
LastProphet:Just admit you were wrong by including Indonesia in the same group consisting of the actual poorest countries on earth like Ethiopia or Nigeria. Per capita income 2020 Indonesia: US$ 4.038 (population 260 million) South Africa: US$ 4.736 (population 60 million) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita See? Even with much bigger number of population, Indonesia's per capita income almost as big as SA which has much lower number of population. Will you call SA is one of the poorest countries too? Indonesia grows much faster than SA too... Admittedly in the next three years the average Indonesians will be wealthier than the average South Africans, the wealthiest country in Africa. |
LastProphet:That is so wrong. Indonesia is far from being one of the poorest countries on earth. It is in fact an upper middle income country just like Thailand and Malaysia. https://blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/new-world-bank-country-classifications-income-level-2020-2021 If you called Indonesia as one of the poorest, what is Nigeria or Kenya then? |
SkyOne11:Ni daga kano but atm living in jakarta. I have been here on this forum since long time ago to follow any news from my hometown, and also to promote the city i am living in. |
Cousin9999:Its capital city, Jakarta, doesn't look like a toilet to me tho. It looks even better than any african cities.
|
Crispels:Where did you get the idea that Indonesia is more corrupt than Nigeria? We must admit that Indonesia and other Asian countries are on another level than most African countries. Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International 1. New Zealand 2. Denmark 3. Finland ..... 80. China 85. Indonesia 91. Turkey .... 130. Togo 146. Nigeria 165. Burundi 173. Venezuela https://www.transparency.org/en/news/cpi-2019-global-highlights In terms of corruption, Indonesia may not be as clean as Japan or Singapore, but it surely is much less corrupt than Nigeria. This is Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Some basic infrastructures in the city are already world class, I doubt if a country that more corrupt than Nigeria could provide these for its people.

efemena5050:To be honest, Jakarta is an incredible city that offers lots of opportunities if we do honest jobs. The minimum wage for unskilled employee is around USD 304 a month, while the average salary for experienced workers there are around USD 985 monthly. In 2019, per capita income of Jakarta stood at USD 17.374. It hosts five unicorn companies, while the whole Africa continent only has two unicorn companies which all of them owned by South African. It is classified by GaWC as an Alpha city, while no other African cities put in the same category. Even Johannesburg is listed as an Alpha - city only, a notch below Jakarta. https://www.cbinsights.com/research-unicorn-companies https://en.antaranews.com/amp/news/135764/jakarta-sets-provincial-minimum-wage-for-2020 http://www.salaryexplorer.com/salary-survey.php?loc=1136&loctype=3 It has so much potential to be the next Asian giant. Economically, it has already been bigger than Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. It can beat Singapore in the foreseeable future if it can maintain its rapid growth.

Danielnino00:I want we compete with other's continents, not with ourselves. We will be rotten inside if we keep fighting each other. |
Top ranked universities in emerging Asia Indian Institute Technology Bombay, India QS World University Ranking = 152 Chulalongkorn University, Thailand QS World University Ranking = 247 Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia QS World University Ranking = 296 Koc University, Turkey QS World University Ranking = 451 Quality of varsities in Europe, North America and Japan are not easy to be surpassed by African universities. Why not developing Asia? So far it is only SA's universities that could compete.

kikuyu2:That is the data for 2010. Last year it accomodated 10 million passengers. https://getbybus.com/en/blog/best-airports-in-the-world/ Infrastructure is the key. We could source our income from any kind of resources. Then, we should equip our cities with the basic infras like wide roads, mass transports, better pavements and so on. Asian cities can do this, why can't we? In terms of infras, Makassar or even Jakarta is still no match for Chinese or Japanese cities. But at least they are building and maintaining the basic infrastructures for their citizens. Here, we rarely see functional pavements in many African's capitals. Jakarta with its elevated highways and wide pavements

rvp20182:You are correct. But Maghreb countries are more popular as tourist destinations for europeans. Moreover, economic expansion can originate from developed countries which transfer their superior technology to developing countries. This is where countries such as Asian Tigers (Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea), China, Indonesia and Vietnam fare well while the maghreb do not. |
Kazikazi:In order to avoid inequality and social unrests, many large economies in the world tend to develop their lower tier cities to disperse their wealth. The basic rule to do that is by providing the infras first. Vietnam is an interesting case because it has two equally developed cities in the north and in the south. It is basically two countries merged into one. Plus it's located next to China and the region of Southeast Asia is relatively peaceful. Meanwhile in Africa, we failed to utilize Europe as our driver of developments. And we are busy waging war against each other. |
Kazikazi:That's good then, but I was talking about the infrastructure. Just compare the capacity of the airports and seaports of both cities, and you'll understand. Makassar is also building a 4.3 km elevated highway connecting its centre to the seaport. Keep in mind that Makassar is the 8th largest city in Indonesia. Ps: I'm not from Makassar.
|
Kazikazi:I believe, for a country, the key to improve significantly is by laying the foundation for the developments. Without infrastructure, economy wouldn't run as expected. That's what China did in 90's. Many Asian countries follow suit such as Indonesia, Vietnam and now Bangladesh. I can tell that Ethiopia is trying to emulate the Asian way. If only we could get rid of the corruption.. |
Makassar is the largest city in eastern Indonesia. Its population is around 1.3 million. Its airport's capacity is larger than any airports in Nigeria or Kenya.
|
Tangerang is another Indonesian city that is unknown outside of the country. It is home to 1.5 million people. Currently, Tangerang hosts some of the headquarters of largest companies in Indonesia.
|
Kazikazi:I agree that South Korea is the one we should copy, but at the moment it is almost impossible for any African countries to emulate SK's way. The closest one we should copy would be either Indonesia or Thailand. There are many Indonesian cities that are better than African cities. I am not talking about the highrise buildings, but the infrastructure and the quality of the cityscape. Many of its 4th or 5th tier cities are well equipped with modern trains, wide sidewalks and huge airports. For example like Medan. It is the 5th largest city in Indonesia, but it has skytrain and a 4 star airport rated by Skytrax. In Africa, there is only one 4 star airport rated by Skytrax, Cape Town International Airport. Medan, population 2.1 million

Jakarta is notoriously known for its dense traffic, but now the streets are deserted as businesses close following the government's order to stay at home to curb the spread of Covid 19.
|
In Indonesia, poverty based on the national poverty line dropped below 10 per cent in 2019 with the value of the poverty line was set up at USD 140 a month for a family of four. It means if your family spends less than USD 140 a month, your family will be considered as poor.

Indonesia's Capital, Jakarta Bans Single-Use Plastic Bags From Markets and Malls https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/01/07/world/asia/07reuters-indonesia-environment-plastic.html The new regulation stipulates that shopkeepers and stallholders should provide environmentally-friendly carrier bags in future and the penalties for violations would range from written warnings, to fines of anywhere between $360 and $1,800, and finally suspension or termination of trading permits. The forms of plastic banned in the regulation include latex, thermoplastic and polyethylene.

kikuyu1:Indonesia has always been richer than Nigeria or Kenya in the last 30 years. I don't understand what you are talking about. Its poverty level is a single digit by international standard. Here is Jakarta from street level. It can rival any richer cities like Singapore or Seoul easily but it is true that this city still has slums in some areas. However, the progress of the slums eradication programme deserves a big applause as its number is decreasing every year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGa40eXH7Ug |
