All these goes to show that White people are wonderful people. After fleeing alleged threats and violence in their communities, scores of foreign nationals - including young children - spent the night sleeping on the cold floor at the Diakonia Centre in central Durban, seeking safety and shelter.

Wrapped in blankets and huddled together, families endured uncertainty and fear as humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, stepped in to provide aid, including food, blankets, and essential support.

Amid the unfolding crisis, IOL spoke to some migrants, who shared accounts of alleged displacement, trauma and their desperate hope for protection in a country they had come to call home.

Among those sheltering at the Diakonia Centre was Christian Kwigomba, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who said he fled conflict in his home country only to now face fear and uncertainty in South Africa.

"I'm from the eastern province of the DRC, where there is war involving M23. I'm here in South Africa as a refugee. I have been here for 15 years now," he said.

He said that he works as a barber to support his family. "I'm just a simple resident who works in a salon to survive. I'm a father of four children and have a wife."

But he said the current situation has left them feeling displaced and vulnerable.

"We're facing a very difficult situation right now in South Africa, where we are no longer able to live our daily lives and provide for our children.

"My wife and I have very young twins. Yesterday, they were taken to sleep in a church in Musgrave because there is no place for children."

Wivine Bahati, also from the DRC, said the group had been informed that the Department of Home Affairs would need to verify the status of those present before any intervention or assistance could be properly coordinated.

This is because people are claiming that we have fake papers."

Bahati, however, strongly rejected allegations that those sheltering at the centre were undocumented, questioning the practicality and fairness of such claims under the current conditions.

"So, there are no undocumented foreigners here."

She further questioned how individuals alleged to be undocumented could present themselves for verification without risking detention. "If any person was in South Africa, how would they come here to get verified? They would get caught."

Tensions around the centre even drew political and community attention, with Zamokuhle Mhlongo, a member of the Umkhonto weSizwe Party, also weighing in on the situation unfolding in the area.

Speaking to IOL, Mhlongo expressed concern about safety in the neighbourhood, linking the unrest to the presence of foreign nationals who have been sheltering in and around the centre.

"We have been here since yesterday because these foreigners are disrupting life in the area."

He claimed that residents felt increasingly unsafe, particularly in relation to women and children moving through the community.

"We believe it is no longer safe because children and women can no longer walk here."

Mhlongo further alleged disorder in the area and called for intervention from authorities and other stakeholders, urging that the situation be resolved urgently.

"These foreigners say they are not safe but what we're seeing is different. Yesterday, they were going up and down the street, drinking alcohol.

Ghana said Thursday it has delayed the evacuation of more than 800 of its citizens from South Africa after a viral video showing the alleged assault of a Ghanaian man triggered outrage.

The footage showing the attack on Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian living in South Africa, circulated widely on social media during the latest wave of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in the country.

The Ghanaian foreign ministry said earlier this month that it was evacuating citizens from South Africa as a result.

Some 800 Ghanaians were to be evacuated starting Thursday, but the process was delayed because of the large numbers of evacuees and legal clearance procedures required by South Africa, the ministry said.

"Considering the numbers involved and the South African legal conditions that have to be met, including mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination and flight permits, the planned evacuation has been deferred by a few days,” the ministry said.

It said that Ghanaian and South African authorities had agreed to accelerate the process.

Only one Ghanaian showed up at South Africa’s O.R. Tambo international airport on Thursday, AFP journalists at the airport reported.

Durban's central business district has once again become a flashpoint of unrest, as foreign nationals camped outside the Durban Central Police Station demanding protection amid fears for their safety.

Eric Jean Butoki, a representative of the Southern Africa Refugee Organisations Forum (SAROF), spoke to the Daily News on behalf of the group and outlined the appeal they made to SAPS.

Princess said their situation felt hopeless and suggested that their last resort would be to engage with the United Nations in search of shelter and support.

Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, leader of the anti-immigration March and March movement, criticised the government's handling of the situation, describing it as ineffective.

She said the uncertainty surrounding immigration issues stemmed from policymakers’ lack of decisiveness and failure to address the legitimate concerns of South Africans.

“Our leaders seem overwhelmed by external pressures while ignoring pressing domestic issues.”

Now you have women and children and toddlers, toddlers that are being kidnapped in your country, but you are more worried about so-called xenophobia in South Africa when you know very well that week in and week out South Africans are showing you videos of Nigerian drug dealers running wild in the streets.

And you guys want to tell us about African unity? If all these people across the African continent are serious about African unity, let's stand up for these toddlers. Let us stand up for these toddlers. The amount of noise, and the amount of videos, the amount of TikToks, the amount of pressure that you are putting on South Africans about so-called xenophobia that doesn't exist because we were marching on the streets. Use that money to save these little girls save these little girls, because we don't want this double standardness that you guys are doing right now.

Now we need your voice. Add your voice if you are busy making noise about South African xenophobia. Make noise about this. We are waiting. We'll help make it trend to save these toddlers.

And these same Nigerian men that had big mouths to talk about South African men being useless. What one thing I know is that us as South Africans we would have been out on the streets by now if this was happening in our country. So we are demanding that you save these toddlers, and it calls for all of you who are making videos about South Africa to stand up for these toddlers.
