JUNE 30 DEADLINE

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed claims that soldiers will be deployed ahead of planned protest action linked to the June 30 "deadline" for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa, while police say they remain on high alert for any violence, intimidation, or acts of vigilantism.

The June 30 date has gained traction on social media and in public mobilisation campaigns across the country, following a wave of protests by movements calling for the removal or repatriation of undocumented foreign nationals.

In recent weeks, the campaign has spread across communities and provinces, with posters, videos, and public statements circulating widely online and fuelling fears of possible unrest.

SA DEFENCE FORCE

However, the SANDF has denied reports suggesting that soldiers were being prepared for deployment in anticipation of protest action on June 30.

"The South African National Defence Force has noted with concern misleading reports on social media suggesting that the SANDF will be deployed in anticipation of planned marches and protest action on June 30, 2026, by various civil society groups calling for the repatriation of illegal nationals," the SANDF said.

"The SANDF dismisses these claims as false, unfounded, and deliberately misleading. At no stage has the SANDF issued any directive or made preparations for deployment in relation to these activities."

The defence force said while the Constitution allowed for peaceful protest, the spread of unverified claims risked creating unnecessary public panic.

"The SANDF appreciates that the Constitution of the Republic allows peaceful protest marches. The SANDF distances itself entirely from these claims and cautions against the dissemination of unverified information that undermines public trust and creates unnecessary alarm."

PROTEST LEADERS

The denial comes as March and March, one of the movements at the centre of the anti-undocumented immigration campaign, has continued to attract public attention over its position on the June 30 date.

At a media briefing earlier this week, March and March founder Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma said the movement supported the broader concerns being raised, but denied that it had set the deadline.

"We are a team, and we support each other in the same ideology. We as March and March did not issue the June 30 deadline," Ngobese-Zuma said.

According to Ngobese-Zuma, the date was issued by others who shared the same ideology.

SA POLICE SERVICE

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, known as NATJOINTS, was aware of and monitoring public mobilisation and campaigns linked to illegal immigration, including activities being promoted ahead of June 30.

"SAPS respects the constitutional right of individuals and organisations to express themselves and to protest lawfully and peacefully," Mathe said.

She said police were assessing possible risks to public safety, public order, and community stability.

"As with any planned mobilisation or public gathering, SAPS (SA Police Service)continuously assesses potential risks to public safety, public order, and community stability. Law enforcement remains alert to any incidents or actions that may lead to violence, intimidation, incitement, destruction of property, or the targeting of individuals or groups."

Mathe said the SAPS Public Order Policing units, Crime Intelligence, and other operational environments, through NATJOINTS, remained on high alert nationally to ensure that any gatherings stayed within the law.

"SAPS will act decisively against any acts of vigilantism, criminality, threats, assault, malicious damage to property, or conduct that undermines the rule of law and the constitutional rights of others, irrespective of nationality."

She said issues relating to undocumented foreign nationals remained the responsibility of law enforcement agencies and the Department of Home Affairs, and had to be dealt with through lawful processes.

"SAPS calls on all communities, organisations, and stakeholders to act responsibly and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands," Mathe said.

"The police appeal for calm, tolerance, and compliance with the law, and warn that anyone found committing criminal acts under the guise of activism or community action will face the full might of the law."

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) said claims by a hacktivist group that its systems have been breached were false and unsubstantiated.

Over the weekend, a group calling itself Nullsec Nigeria said it breached SARS and the South African Information Technology Agency (SITA).

SITA denied that it had been breached on Sunday. SARS issued a statement on Monday denying that any foreign threat actors compromised its systems.

“SARS continuously monitors its systems for any suspicious activity and has conducted a thorough investigation in response to these reports,” it said.

“At this stage, there is no evidence that SARS’s systems have been compromised. SARS wishes to reassure the public regarding the integrity of its systems.”

The revenue service said it treated the protection of taxpayer information and the security of its digital platforms as sacrosanct and considers them core responsibilities.

“This dovetails with SARS’s broader commitment to build a smart, modern institution with unquestionable integrity, and to strengthen public trust and confidence in the tax administration system,” it said.

“SARS will continue to monitor its digital environment and, where necessary, will communicate through its official platforms.”

NULLSEC CLAIMS

On 23 May 2026, Nullsec Nigeria, which previously operated under the name Anonymous Nigeria, posted links on a hacker forum to allegedly compromised data from two South African organisations.

It claimed the SARS data included names, email addresses and passwords used on official websites. The SITA link allegedly contained names, passwords, and the platforms used to access SITA services.

MyBroadband reported on Sunday that the breach did not appear to be legitimate after a South African cybersecurity researcher analysed the data.

“In my opinion, there is not enough information to confirm the SARS and SITA breach claims are real,” they said.

Nullsec Nigeria told MyBroadband via the encrypted messaging service Session that the breaches were real and that it would not leak information belonging to South African citizens.

“They’ll deny it or find a way to fix the problem so fast it makes us look like fools. That data is the real data,” they said.

“All the documents which were from the hacks are based on ignorance of proper security. The government of South Africa must know those cheap games ain’t a game anymore.”

MyBroadband could not independently verify the breaches due to insufficient evidence from the Nigerian group.

SA INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AGENCY

SITA head of corporate affairs, Tlali Tlali, said the organisation’s ICT infrastructure had not been compromised and that its systems were fully intact.

Tlali explained that SITA’s security teams operate 24/7 and are equipped with monitoring and threat-detection capabilities.

“All systems have been tested and verified as fully operational, and no anomalies indicative of a cyberattack have been identified,” the organisation said.

SITA, which operates the South African government’s digital infrastructure, said that only one significant government organisation’s website was down at the time of its feedback to MyBroadband.

SA POLICE SERVICE

This was the website of the South African Police Service (SAPS), which we verified was inaccessible at various times on Saturday, 23 May, and Sunday, 24 May.

“We wish to clarify that the downtime of a website of that department is the direct result of a scheduled and planned maintenance window,” Tlali said.

Users visiting the SAPS website received a message that it was unreachable. Nullsec Nigeria posted that the site was “tango down” on its Telegram channel, leading to assumptions that it had attacked the site.

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

Last week, Nullsec Nigeria also claimed responsibility for breaching systems belonging to the Department of Correctional Services and posted links to alleged exfiltrated data.

At the time, the group said the hacks were part of a coordinated effort by multiple threat actor groups in a campaign dubbed #OpSouthAfrica.

The campaign aimed to attack South African government organisations amid the increased incidence of xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, including Nigerians.

“We’ll expose all your evil deeds for the world to see, unless this attack stops. But if not, we’ll leak everything they got,” the group said.

Ghanaian nationals queued at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport early on Wednesday to board one of the first flights home after waves of anti-immigrant protests in South Africa heightened safety concerns.
