Dunia disclosed this at a press conference in Auchi, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, yesterday.

“Adorolo was on his way back from Auchi to his parish, St. Benedict Catholic Church, Okpella, when he was abducted by gunmen at a bad spot near Okpella at about 6.00pm on Wednesday evening.

“The abductors have made contact with the church for ransom. The church does not pay ransom as it is not a profit-making organisation,” said Dunia.

Th cleric has called on security agencies to help free Adorolo.

“The diocese is calling for unconditional release of the priest. We are holding a mass for the unconditional release of the priest,” he added.

Last month, it was reported that a priest, Rev. F. Cyriacus Onunkwo, had been kidnapped and murdered in Imo state.

His body was found in Omuma Village in Orlu East Local Government Area by the police.

We hope the police can swing into action swiftly to ensure the same fate does not befall Adorolo.

The HRW report noted that the deported people were likely to face new violence, displacement and destitution.

The group, which investigates allegations of human rights abuses worldwide, says the report is based on interviews with more than 60 refugees.

It added that soldiers tortured, assaulted and sexually exploited Nigerian asylum seekers and denied them access to the UN refugee agency.

The rights group claimed Cameroon deported, often violently, tens of thousands of the refugees since early 2015.

“The Cameroonian military torture and abuse of Nigerian refugees seems to be driven by an arbitrary decision to punish them for Boko Haram attacks in Cameroon and to discourage Nigerians from seeking asylum,” said HRW Associate Refugee Director, Gerry Simpson.

Boko Haram had posed steady threat to communities in north-east Nigeria and launched offensives in neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Since 2009, tens of thousands of people have died in the hands of Sunni fundamentalists in the region.

According to the UN, an estimated 2.7 million people fled their homes due to Boko Haram.

Isah said Malami had approved a list of prosecutors to handle the cases and the legal aid council has also released a list counsels who will stand in defence of the suspects.

Malami’s aide said four judges have been appointed by chief judge of the federal high court to sit on the cases at Kainji and dispose of them “expeditiously”.

According to him, the prosecution “will start with the detainees in Kainji followed closely by the disposal of the cases of the detainees in Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri until the cases are exhausted.

“All is now set to begin the arraignment of suspected Boko Haram suspects in various detention facilities in the country. It is slated to kick-start tentatively on Monday, October 7, 2017.

“The office of the national security adviser (ONSA) as the coordinator of terrorism matters is expected to assist the court by providing the relevant detainees access to deradicalisation programmes where necessary.

“This is the report of the on-the-spot assessment of the facilities and other incidentals preparatory to the commencement of trial of the over 1,600 suspected Boko Haram terrorists detained in a military detention facility located in Wawa Barracks, Kainji, New Bussa, Niger state following successes recorded by the Nigeria army and other security agencies in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

“A team comprising representatives of the ONSA, federal high court and the office of the honourable attorney-general of the federation were dispatched to Kainji from the 12th to 14th of September, 2017 to carry out the assessment and to discuss with relevant authorities and organisation in final preparation of the all-important national assignment.

“It will be noted that there are four categories of suspects at the Kainji detention facility mentioned above. These suspects are – Boko Haram suspects who were hitherto investigated by the joint investigation team set up by the defence headquarters and case files transmitted to the honourable attorney-general of the federation and after a careful review of the cases based on their individual merit, it was discovered that they have no prima facie cases that will sustain a charge against them in any court of law hence were recommended for release and handed over to the ONSA for rehabilitation.

“The second category is the set of suspects that the honourable attorney-general found prima facie cases against them and charges already filed at the federal high court, Abuja division who are also mostly in the detention facility under reference and may be willing to plead guilty for a lesser sentences.

“The other category are the suspects whose case file are either recommended for further investigation or that have no investigation conducted on them at all hence they do not have case files that will warrant the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation to form any opinion in respect of their case.

“Lastly, the fourth category is the suspects whose cases were reviewed and a prima facie were found and may be willing to opt for a full trial. From the above categorisation, it is important to state that the number of the suspects affected by any of the aforementioned categories would only be determined when the trial has commenced.”

On September 11, Malami’s aide said 13 cases had been concluded, nine convictions secured and that 33 trials were ongoing at various federal high court divisions.

He also noted that poorly investigated case files, over-reliance on confession-based evidence and lack of forensic evidence are some of the challenges faced in the prosecution of these Boko Haram suspects.

On the other hand, more Boko Haram repentant insurgents are being drafted into the government’s de-radicalization programme under a federal government military operation that grants amnesty to surrendering insurgents.

About 100 of them have reportedly joined the de-radicalization process so far.

n a report titled, Antibacterial agents in clinical development – an analysis of the antibacterial clinical development pipeline, including tuberculosis, WHO shows a serious lack of new antibiotics under development to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

Most of the drugs currently in the clinical pipeline are modifications of existing classes of antibiotics and are only short-term solutions, the report says.

The report found very few potential treatment options for those antibiotic-resistant infections identified by WHO as posing the greatest threat to health, including drug-resistant tuberculosis which kills around 250 000 people each year.

“Antimicrobial resistance is a global health emergency that will seriously jeopardize progress in modern medicine,” says Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO.

“There is an urgent need for more investment in research and development for antibiotic-resistant infections including TB, otherwise we will be forced back to a time when people feared common infections and risked their lives from minor surgery.”

In addition to multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, WHO has identified 12 classes of priority pathogens – some of them causing common infections such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections – that are increasingly resistant to existing antibiotics and urgently in need of new treatments.

IPOB media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful said in a statement that the whereabouts of Mazi Kanu has remained unknown several days after the military invaded his house in Umuahia, The Sun reports.

“We are giving the federal government and South East governors seven days to produce or tell us the condition of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“If he still alive, they should charge him to court because if anything happens to him, the South East governors should bear the consequences after the expiration of this notice, or they should hasten to build more prisons and acquire more weapons which they will use to kill more Biafrans,” Powerful said.

Powerful said further that after going through the record of IPOB members in Kanu’s compound on the day of the attack, it was discovered that about 38 members were arrested, adding that they had also not been seen to date.

“We are once again raising alarm for the United Nations and the relevant bodies across the globe to ask the Nigerian government and her security operatives to give details of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his parents, including those dead bodies and those picked up alive during the attack and invasion of our leader’s compound in Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku Umuahia”, a statement from the group reads.

“We wonder why the South Eastern governors would decide to collaborate with Hausa Fulani oligarchy to kill our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and parents. Nnamdi Kanu has been using nonviolence approach for the actualization of Biafra since 2012 when the struggle for Biafra independence started.

“It is important for the Nigerian government and South East governors to produce our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu before the situation gets out of hand.

“Let the world also ask the Nigerian government and South East governors why and how they sent the military to invade Nnamdi Kanu’s compound, which led to the loss of many innocent lives within five days of the operation in his compound.”

The container marked CMAU189817/8 was said to have been discovered after the Customs Area Controller of the Command, Bashir Yusuf, ordered a detailed profiling of the importer of the 1,100 rifles intercepted last week.

Similarly, the public relations officer of the Tin Can Island command of the NCS, Uche Ejesieme, said that the container was still being profiled to determine its content.

“Nobody can stampede us into confirming something that is not true. The container is still being profiled to know what is inside. After this is done, we will invite the media as we have done in previous times.”

In a statement on Monday, Saraki said the categorisation of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation by the defence headquarters and proscription of the group by south-east governors did not follow due process.

He has also said due processes must be followed in accordance with the law before such declaration can have effect.

Ohaneze Ndigbo has condemned the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

The Senate president expressed hope that President Muhammadu Buhari would initiate the right process for declaring IPOB a terrorist group, saying this would demonstrate to the world at large that “we are a country that operates by laid down process”.

“I also wish to state that the announcement of the proscription of the group known as Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by governors of the south-east states and the categorisation of the group as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian military is unconstitutional and did not follow due process,” the statement read.

“Our laws make clear provisions for taking such actions and without the due process being followed, such declaration cannot have effect.”

Appealing for calm and Nigerians, Saraki called on all Nigerians to come together and find the right solution to the problem rather than worsening the crisis.

“Our brothers and sisters in the south-east, in particular, should continue to maintain peace and tranquillity and go about their lawful business. This crisis will not benefit anybody but would only expose innocent people to unwarranted danger,” it read.

“At this point, Nigerians outside the south-east who have worked to ensure that the crisis does not spread to other parts of the country deserve our commendation. I, therefore, call for continued efforts to sustain peace, unity and stability in all our communities so as to ensure that all residents, no matter their religion, tribe and creed remain protected and safe under the law.

“We must commend the military for their efforts in restoring peace to different parts of the country and sustaining the unity of the country.

“However, in the face of provocation, the military should allow themselves to be guided by their training which emphasises respect for human rights, even in war. Also, giving the nature of this particular situation, the military has every reason to be hesitant in the use of force.”

He said the army should not be over-stretched as there is need to protect the military “against dissipation of their fighting strength”.

The nation’s number three citizen also revealed the plan of the national assembly to embark on a “fact-finding mission” to the south-east.

“I want to also make it clear that the national assembly intends to embark on a fact-finding investigation aimed at determining what actually happened during the period of the military exercise in the south-east. We want to be able to sift the facts from the fiction and determine who did what. It is quite clear that all the facts are not yet known. We assure Nigerians that there will be no cover-up. We intend to lay the facts bare.

“We want to remind Nigerians that the reason for embarking on constitution review by the national assembly was to enable us look into issues that are agitating the minds of Nigerians and creating tension among us. We have promised that the exercise would be continuous.

“We intend to keep that promise by further taking decisions that would strengthen and improve on our structures. The eighth national assembly, on resumption, will play its constitutional role by addressing all those issues that are agitating the minds of our people and over which they feel so strong.”

Amazon has moved into offline with the acquisition of Whole Foods. The e-commerce giant had noted the limit of e-commerce when it comes to grocery. With a physical store, Amazon can offer a better user experience to its customers than a business that relied solely on trucking grocery across cities.

Now Alibaba, the king of marketplace with focus on connecting buyers and sellers, is reportedly building a physical store. Alibaba does not typically own the inventory in its portal; it feeds on commissions from transactions executed on its platforms. This strategy of building a store is new and it is a big deal.

Alibaba, the operator of China’s largest online sales platform, is reportedly building its own mall as it seeks to enrich the real-world shopping experience with technology and convenience.

The five-story shopping center — which the company is calling “More Mall” — is located at Alibaba’s headquarters in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou.

The mall was built on a 40,000-square-meter plot of land and is scheduled to open in April, according to linkshop.com. Currently, construction crews are finishing up work on the building’s interior. —

Under the initiative, Alibaba is moving fast into offline spaces to help remake traditional retailing, including launching unmanned convenience store and bringing big data technology to 1 million mom-and-pop stores. Now, it’s building its first shopping center.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has efficiently integrated its physical stores with its online operations. From Macy’s to Bestbuy, we are seeing companies capitalizing on their physical stores to deepen their competitive capabilities in the digital space. If that is the trend, I do think Jumia and Konga need to follow the bandwagon. Sure, they need to examine if that makes sense for them.

This is a way they can do this: build a store in each of Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. The movers and shakers have said it:

“Alibaba believes the future of New Retail will be a harmonious integration of online and offline,” said Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba Group, in a statement in July.

I will not call it New Retail; I will call it Hybrid-Commerce or h-commerce for short. Of course, someone might have used the same term. But that is the way I see it. I do think the interface of the meatspace and internet will help companies like Konga and Jumia compete in the Tier 1 cities in Nigeria. If the pioneers of the sector are moving to h-commerce, I do think they need to do so. This is the era of h-commerce. It is ON.

A hybrid commerce business is one that sells both online and offline. The primary purpose of the business is retailing. It will fuse the meatspace and the e-commerce drawing on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.
