The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned Nigerians on the need to raise their guard against another outbreak of Lassa fever and Ebola.

Dr Tunde Olawepo, the Chairman of the association in Kwara, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ilorin.

Olawepo also cautioned the country against letting down its guard against the deadly virus, Ebola and Lassa fever.

He said that the government and people have relaxed measures that were created to contain the spread of Ebola at its outbreak in 2013.

According to him, surveillance of travelers entering the country has stopped just as people had relaxed with personal hygiene like the regular washing of hands and use of sanitizers.

“We need to step up with preventive measures and this means people must keep up with hygiene at all times,” he said.

The doctor warned that if these measures were not sustained, these contagious diseases could resurface.

The NMA chairman also advocated for psychological examination of people aspiring to hold sensitive positions in the government.

He explained that psychopaths abound in society who appeared to be many normal but need a psychological examination to confirm the true state of health.

While everyone lends their two cents on how the country can move past the threats to divide it along tribal lines, Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has asked that one of the chambers of the National Assembly be scrapped.

He said this yesterday at the Government House, Lafia, while receiving members of the Ahmadu Bello University Alumni Association led by its National President, Prof. Ahmed Tijani Mural.

He said there was no need for the combined existence of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“If Nigerians are going for Senate, then the House of Representatives should be abolished, but if they are going for House of Representatives, the Senate should be scrapped.

“But for me, I suggest that each of the 744 local government in the country should have a House of Representatives member to cut cost,” he declared.

Come August 19, Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West senatorial district, will learn his fate as his constituents decide if he remains in the Senate or returns home.

INEC released the time table for Melaye’s recall, in Abuja, yesterday after they had, last week, acknowledged receiving a petition from constituents asking to recall him.

Melaye, who had initially ridiculed the process has come out to challenge the process saying it all has been orchestrated by the state governor.

A spokesperson of INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, has said that the commission would go ahead with the recall as the suit being referred to by Melaye’s counsel is mere intent to challenge the process.

“Yes, it is true we received a letter from his lawyer but, that is just an intention to go to court, the case has not been heard, so, you can’t say we should stop our process because he wants to go to court. He can go to court and pursue whatever he wants to, but, we’ll go on with our process,”

Bedmate Furniture Company worker, William Ekanem landed in hospital after his Chinese employer identified as Master Wan caused him a spinal cord injury with one kick.

On the day of the incident, Master Wan demanded to see a package Ekanem was carrying. The bag which contained rice Ekanem had bought from a local food vendor on the premises was forcefully taken by Wan, who went ahead to search the package.

A little altercation resulted thereafter and a resulting kick left Ekanem sprawled on the floor sill pinned down by said Master Wan.

He was pulled away from the grip of his boss by other colleagues and a visit to the hospital confirmed he had sustained some injuries to his spinal cord. Doctors who were handling the case said the injury was not serious but required a month of physiotherapy to correct the damage done.

The company, who claimed Ekanem was a petty thief and faking the injury, made no efforts to cover any of his medical expenses and caused Ekanem to hire a lawyer to sue the company to the tune of N50 million.

The intervention of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment changed the dynamics of the incident as a meeting had been scheduled for June 29 between both parties, sources said.

Former Edo state Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has called on former military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd.) to apologize to Nigerians for calling on the Federal Government to restructure Nigeria.

The former Governor also condemned the use of hate speeches by certain groups in the country.

Imo State governor and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has accused Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, of heating up the polity.

Fayose had alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has been on life support since June 6 at West End Hospital in London, United Kingdom.

Okorocha blasted him saying he was only engaging in “cheap talk” and “statement of hate.”

He accused Fayose of wishing the president dead, instead of praying for him and wishing him well.

“I want to advise that Fayose’s statement should not be regarded. It was baseless and there was no substance for that information. What he said was not right, it was uncalled for and that is simply heating up the polity”, he said to state house correspondents on Thursday.

“In our culture and tradition, we do not play politics with people’s lives and anybody can be sick, anybody can be in hospital and so, making such categorical statement, which is unfounded, that Mr. President is on life support, is, to the best of my knowledge, a statement of hate.

A European Human Rights Court has made its judgment on a case of human rights that will coerce a couple to allow their sick baby to die.

The parents of the baby Chris Gard and Connie Yates have been in a long legal battle to save their baby who is suffering from a serious genetic illness.

The baby is currently on life support while treatment possibilities were being considered.

At just 8 weeks old, Charlie was diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome and is considered to be only one of 16 babies in the world with this disease.

His condition is currently incurable and eventually fatal.

In the meantime, doctors are developing treatments for the various mitochondrial conditions, including the nucleoside treatment Charlie’s parents have been fighting for.
