AAinEqGuinea:Sure, though I gotta warn you it would be a long reply ...and honestly it would require discussing something I want to make a dedicated thread on. "A development of the recording, study, and methodology of African History" or "An Africana Historiography" for short. Though looking at my track record for new post I probably should state what ever now haha. I still need to start my post on African Americans in the civil war occupying the capital of the confederacy. Hmm, I'll give you this... pleep:If I were to discus pleeps position in the OP I would discuss it in two parts Before I start: He gave a subject(black peoples problems, with a highlight on police brutality) and a position( that it is self imposed and caused by themselves). Note that a rational wasn't given. So all I could really do is state the same subject and give an alternative position. I.E I can't discuss a rational he never made but I can state an alternative position. That said let me start... Part 1: There are two main things I would speak on before the subject at hand. pleep:and pleep:Of course Pleep is free to use whatever reasoning tools he wishes but for me I would first make note of the limitations/blind spots of Platonic "Objective" thought as a solitary practice . I don't rely on Platonic notions of the separation of thought and emotion nor do I hold that it's possible, necessary, or even advantageous for African peoples. As a matter of fact It is disadvantageous to attempt objectivity or what it ends up being in practice "apolitical thought" in our dealing with Europeans. I'm very political in how I assess our dealing with Europeans and up front about it boot. Second would be Newtonian notions of causality. I try not to work in causal relationships but under the notion of sum of forces. If your a reader of African Deep thought a good notion/example would be... 'umuntu ngu muntu nga bantu' as commonly translated 'I am because we are, and since we are, therefore I am.' My personal application of this principle is for any I(which could be conceived of as a group if need be) denote all the we and understand it's reciprocal interaction with that I. Any changes desired made to this interrelationship is dictated by my political ends and the best way to achieve them. If your uncomfortable with nonwestern thought just think in terms of dynamics(I believe I read you do engineering work) I would venture into my position on the rejection(though that maybe to strong a term) of the notion of contradiction but he never mentioned it and that's getting off topic. Part 2: After part 1 I would write a separate post using the cognitive tools listed in the first post to show how I arrive at an alternative position. Note: Just because I arrive at a different position doesn't mean pleep is wrong per say it could simply mean I disagree or the implications are not politically efficient/advantageous to my liking. As you can see by this post alone it would be long and I would rather talk about these things in another dedicated thread |
Shollypopzz:I know you're smarter than to think violence is going to solve anything. The American police have all sort of weapons in their disposal. What are AAs going to fight them with? I don't think AAs want to do anything to prove their stereotypes true. I would recommend having a different form of police force for black communities but that would never happen. They already frown at HBCUs, BlackGirlsRock, Black Engineers Association,etc......so we know that would never happen. Instead of fighting them for their actions, I think we need to fight the mentality. How does one fight racial profiling? Through the media? RandomAfricanAm:
|
I'm feeling spry today! Haven't put down a post in a while either maybe that's why.... :/ ![]() Feel free to check my math Fulaman198:(AP) Africa total population 1,111,000,000 (AAP) African American Population 40,000,000 (probably around 50Mil actually) (NP) Nigeria example population 185,043,000 (GP) Ghana example population 27,714,000 (BP) Botswana example population 2,176,000 Given Equation: Country population / Total African population = percentage of citizenship slots to countryExample 1 of 3: Nigeria 185,043,000(NP) / 1,111,000,000(AP) = %0.1665554(Nigerian ratio of African population) 40,000,000(AAP) * %0.1665554(Nigerian ratio of African population) = 6,662,216(Maximum citizenship slots open to AA in Nigeria) Example 2 of 3: Ghana 27,714,000(GP) / 1,111,000,000(AP) = %0.0249451(Ghanaian ratio of African population) 40,000,000(AAP) * %0.0249451(Ghanaian ratio of African population) = 997,804(Maximum citizenship slots open to AA in Ghana) Example 3 of 3: Botswana 2,176,000(BP) / 1,111,000,000(AP) = %0.0019586(Botswana ratio of African population) 40,000,000(AAP) * %0.0019586(Botswana ratio of African population) = 78,343(Maximum citizenship slots open to AA in Botswana) (NP) Nigeria population 185,043,000 %0.1665554 (percentage of AAP taken) 6,662,216 (Max possible new citizens) (GP) Ghana population 27,714,000 %0.0249451 (percentage of AAP taken) 997,804 (Max possible new citizens) (BP) Botswana population 2,176,000 %0.0019586 (percentage of AAP taken) 78,343 (Max possible new citizens) Note: I doubt (Actual new citizens) would ever go past %10-20 of given value for max. Besides There is to much prime real estate in the hands of the diaspora for everyone to come back. Strategically in terms of markets & defense it would be a bad move. Though the diaspora should have a sanctuary from judicial, civil, and economic exploitation available to them be it temp or permanent which is what I advocate. |
Man were do I even start with this thread!?!? 1. Well, I'll start at the title question since that's easiest Simple answer: Yes. Though most of the hard critical make or break work is and has been over since the 70's 80's. 2. pleep:I had to address the above statement: I've been around here long enough to know that I disagree with the vast majority of pleeps interpretations of history and problem analysis in general. That said I must say this is yet another interpretation I disagree with. Now lets continue...... pleep:That depends on what they are afraid of and personally I can't be bothered with finding out what white people are afraid of... though I'm student enough of history to know that's a tactical mistake so I'll say that's not high on my priority list now. From my read of history It's time for those scattered pockets of African Americans to move back down to and consolidate in the black belt region. Fortunately this is already occurring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asP2-6hUXxk "After nearly 100 years, Great Migration begins reversal College grads and retirees are leading the return of blacks to the South" -by Greg Toppo and Paul Overberg, USA TODAY 2015 http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/02/02/census-great-migration-reversal/21818127/ Luckily it's the educated(new grads) and experienced(retirees) who come south. The need now is to turn that into business creation which would serve as a magnate for the less fortunate to move down and consolidate while having an economic slot to fill. The best example of that being Atlanta(Though we certainly don't need another strip club / gay land city down here) one of the best moves was when former mayor Andrew young told the local banks that if you don't loan to the people we are pulling the city funds out of your banks Bold move . The issue now is that all those people who left the south to get away from the racist jim crow laws spread themselves way to thin. When the right to vote was won African Americans essentially decolonized large swaths of the southern black belt region which is were I grew up. The type of stuff you see on the news doesn't go on down here like that because we both admin the city and run the police. Most of these incidents happen in areas were African Americans are a minority in the population. Nobody is marching in greene county Alabama because the police shot an unarmed black man ...damn near all the police are black anyway. List of U.S. counties with African-American majority populations in 2000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._counties_with_African-American_majority_populations_in_2000 Example: when police beat this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kreWUvrCfZU There was no need to march down the street and why? Because... most of the hard critical make or break work is and has been over since the 70's 80's.Birmingham police beating video: Five officers fired http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2009/05/five_birmingham_police_officer.html Once you have control over the city and police you can start weeding out the B.S. Most welfare recipients are white B. Most African Americans are not on welfare nor have they ever received welfare C. Anything mentioned after a and b are basically pointless facts and/or assertions(yes there is a such thing as a pointless fact) 3. Fulaman198:40mil African Americans couldn't go to any one country without drastically blowing up the politics of the country. Even a big country like Nigeria wouldn't work. Remember a lot of African nations are woefully under populated in comparisons to the rest of the world(which is one of the main reasons for African Union/ Pan-Africanism) Imagine 40mil+ going to botswanna with a population of 2mil + there are more people in Metro Atlanta then that. www.nairaland.com/attachments/2312172_screenshot2015041502_26_25_png6829b4ea9d19d07e636a8cb3faf5fadc www.nairaland.com/attachments/2312173_screenshot2015041502_28_58_png16cf4f0d74c522ca8a54a336c5f466e6 www.nairaland.com/attachments/2312174_screenshot2015041502_29_10_pnge125653338be0c8ad37602a285d1ac86 There are only 2 real solutions to a case like that for me. A. Set aside a huge ass plot of land for diasporans (personally I don't like this cause I don't care for colonial boarders and admin zones) B. Country population / Total African population = percentage of citizenship slots to country percentage of citizenship slots to country * Total African American population = number of African Americans accepted as citizens Feel free to check my math ![]() |
Yeah I was really disappointed when this tread started going down with all the random postings. There are some great repository threads here on nairaland and this is/was one of them. |
To quote myself in an earlier post..... Most African people were lineages who communicated with other lineages through family heads(representatives) and common trading markets. Europeans would say all these people who may ordinarily not be seen as "one people" as a tribe because they shared words & interacted together or had the same "material culture" some times even if they spoke different dialects.itstpia8:Personally my issue isn't about the extent to which the term is derogatory or not, it's the extent to which it distorts the issue at hand. One lineage could also serve as the central nexus point for the other 8-12 lineages who again might not consider themselves "one people" but interact together for mutual benefit**politics**. Europeans would come down and say these people are all the "tribe" of that central nexus lineage reguardless of how they saw themselves. Sidenote: If those same Europeans come down and blowup the political balance that those lineages made for themselves, then calling that tribalism is missing the larger point.
|
Gotcha let me check it out. |
@KidStranglehold @Supper HeeeEEhhey, "Aight neh deah", a good'ol fashion nairaland dust up! I haven't been apart of one of these since https://www.nairaland.com/1262772/somali-nomadic-culture#15314931 so... "whadi" miss? ![]() |
macof:Thanks for the reply. Though before I start let me quote my self.... Note: My apologies about the "longwindedness" of the post. While my self training is in African world views(history/culture/spirituality). My formal training is software engineering/computer science which deals with languages in a different/distinct manner then what a pure linguist would, hence the weird questionThat said you have verified my assumptions/observations written in the post above. Awo(Ahworh) simply means colour, appearance..maybe even description Awo Ewe would mean colour of a leaf/leaf's colour ^ That is what my assumptions were in my post above. It looks to me that given some set/array of attributesThank you for answering my question. ![]() |
hunter21:Ok cool, your in the hot spot of Nigeria. So tell me about yourself and what your trying to get into/have been doing in regards to software? Who knows maybe something will click. |
hunter21:@hunter21 Man you are bringing back good memories. I really wanted this thread to work out. If not for the software it self, definitely so that others here can see the process laid out on how a game would be made from top to bottom. As I stated before the big data wipe last year in 2014 around April or May caused me to leave nairaland for months (I lost a lot of hard work). @liljboy10 @hunter21 As for bringing this thread back I'd love to. I actually found some remnants of it I can post now. I was thinking about making a diary post laying it all out then moving everything over here when I'm done. I've also thought about just moving this whole thing over to coli.com to avoid having all my hard work wiped again. That said where are you located? One thing I really liked about this thread was that I had the pleasure of meeting a lot of Nigerians egger to create games/art/software just looking a stable platform to do the work. BTW, I'm in the U.S myself that's why I asked your location. |
macof:**Old man fist shake** Dang, You are making me want to revive a thread I made on "the logic embedded in different languages". (It was a thread lost in the big data wipe last year) After that data wipe I got pissed and left nairaland for months... still not all the way back I'm curious about... 1. the Literal meaning of the word Awo 2. the semantic meaning of the word Awo 3. the function of the word Awo in relation to others It looks to me that given some set/array of attributes Object = [mass, position, color,.........,etc.] The "logical" function of Awo is to denote/extract the color associated/embedded in the set/array of attributes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Awo (Object) -> Color.Object -> Color.[mass, position, color ,.........,etc.] -> color Awo (Ewe) -> Color.Ewe -> Color.[mass.16 measuring units, position.[x=1000, y=1300, z=1200], color.green ,.........,etc.] -> green Awo Ewe -> green ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Which leads me back to the question of what does Awo mean that allows it to be used as such? Note: My apologies about the "longwindedness" of the post. While my self training is in African world views(history/culture/spirituality). My formal training is software engineering/computer science which deals with languages in a different/distinct manner then what a pure linguist would, hence the weird question |
Meh, boring. I appreciate the spirit of what you're saying in terms of the application of knowledge but I don't really care for your overall interpretation as I understand it at first glance. Questions: What is your definition of "too religious"? (please provide 2-3 real world*non hypothetical* examples) What is your definition of "rational, scientific view "? (please provide 2-3 real world*non hypothetical* examples) What is your definition of "crude and ritualistic"? (please provide 2-3 real world*non hypothetical* examples) What is your definition of "INTELLECTUAL GOD OR THINKER"? BTW, I'm not aiming to be rude and/or facetious. There really isn't much more of a reply that can be made on my part unless those terms are defined. Anything more would be a barrage of assumptions on my part. |
The more interesting question to me is what are the dynamics of how society morphed from.... No big deal ![]() .......(Edited for clarity: This is not associated with sex) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/56/A_proud_trio.png https://www.princeafricazulu.org/zenphoto/cache/culture/reed_dance_festival_2007/101_0091_595.jpg https://static1.demotix.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/a_scale_large/2500-7/photos/1378226460-zulu-royal-reed-dance_2573047.jpg To Oh my GOD, DANGER indecent dress .......(Edited for clarity: This is associated with sex) https://360nobs.cdn.ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Work-pics2818.jpg Note: I could care less about the notion of "hypocrisy" that's just some notion a dead Greco-Roman dude I don't care about cooked up. I'm interested in the sequence of actions that made people change there outlook. |
KidStranglehold:Ok I've sent it. It's one huge data dump. I have to put it all in order and also read over a lot of it to make sure the sources actually support what it is I'm saying. Nothing worse then writing something that your very own sources contradict. ![]() |
Supper:Hahaha to much! I have to acknowledge the perks of coming into my knowledge kinda randomly and independent of a lot of the F**kery that goes on. The sad part is that a lot of the works who they read from are diminished because of the propagation of misinterpretations. The best way I can think of it is this.... Imagine a group of people who're malnourished because they eat the same foods. One day a master chief comes amongst them and tells them they actually have a more varied array of foods to choose from and also they come from a group of people who has a historic array of foods and dishes they could add to there diet that will improve there health. Now while thats a great Idea in theory, in practice you have to teach those people how to cook not just tell them about foods and dishes. If you don't they are going to misinterpret how to create those dishes and screw up cooking those foods. Which will make the master chief them self look bad even though they are quite accomplished. When I finally learned about African history my first conundrum was those people(ghetto street-corner "scholars" and how can they be both "wrong" and "right" at the same time. It was after a little thought that I realized that it wasn't the knowledge that was so much "bad"/"wrong" as was their interpretation of it(those two things are closely linked and easy to confuse)Example: Yes the Egyptians had a model approximating a glider https://www.thestoneage.org/res/70.jpg No Egyptians weren't flying gliders through the desert(there is a magazine cover depicting this**wish I could find it again**) https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7112/6956265338_f4058bea28.jpg @Kidstranglehold Passed the AT&T evaluation still have some training but hopefuly i'll get a sample batch of that data to you within the next couple days. @Supper You've been M.I.A for a minute yourself I see. |
Funny i was just thinking of what all i should send and what else do i need to find to make the actual article. I'm in accellerated training for a gig i'm doing with AT&T so i don't have much free time. |
AllachiToubou:Thanks for the reply, I apologize if I missed anything concerning the Toubou. As I said at the time I didn't really know were I should place the Toubou. This is especially an issue in that contact with English speaking Toubou is rare, along with pertinent knowledge constantly being mediated by the extent to which Europeans are interested enough to collect information on a given group( though that's a wider issue ). Also, do you know of any big war that occurred around 600 years ago that the Toubou survived but could've caused the migration of others from the area? (as depicted below) The story of the “Kedh Gurrai” (great migration to the south) states that there was a big war which caused people to disperse in different directions. Some stayed, some moved away, and this was also when people converted to different religions; this migration is believed to have happened around 14th Century AD. The legend says the war was triggered by a “Boran” invasion. The Borana people have always lived in the same regions, and speak the same language as Garris. |
KidStranglehold:^ ^ ^ This Also... RandomAfricanAm:That said... @KidStranglehold Hey I suggest you check this out. It is a good intro into what I meant earlier about the "rabbit hole" concerning fundamental "western philosophical" assumptions/problems that cloud most issues we talk about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkkNa7eMyF0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X_NwaHQsOA?list=PL4140C1A4FDFB3208 |
KidStranglehold:Now that is a "rabbit hole" question right there, having less to do with those wars and more to do with the roots of "western philosophy". To make it brief, what you know of the civil war and enslavement period isn't so much a lie as it's simply an incomplete account. To push the issue a bit, when people claim "objectivity" it has to be understood that whatever "object" they construct is a culturally constructed "object". To make it plain, culturally they only care about the generals, high level details, stratagems, tactics, etc and not the troops so they don't write an account of them(omission). "the object (subset of tracked attributes) is always a cultural construction" |
KidStranglehold:African American civil war memorial/museum researcher *Edit* The researcher will be included in a video at the bottom of the post. I would have put it up months ago but I had to corroborate his findings first. Those news paper articles being the hardest to find because I didn't know what publication they were printed in. Another reason I didn't post him is because he got some stuff wrong that I know is wrong in terms of linguistics that would serve to under cut the rest of his argument. So I had to build his case sans the questionable content. |
KidStranglehold:No need, this is more important then my "ego". Besides I get my info from others also. The extra stuff tends to come from corroborating/fact checking what I read before disseminating it. Example this civil war stuff came from an account I wanted to check out. I didn't want to believe it until I could find the same docs as the person I heard it from... so I searched till I found it. This is a quick teaser. I'll upload the link to the actual news articles(this is one of two) from the library of congress when I PM send the raw file dump.
|
@KidStranglehold By the way I have something you are goin to looooove man! ![]() What if I told you I have two different news paper clippings out of the library of congress showing that African Americans captured and occupied the capital of the confederacy ending the the civil war? I've collected the documents for African Americans fighting in the civil war and freeing themselves. At this point I'm just compiling everything together. I already have most of the documents, everything from the C.I.A. & library of congress down to laws passed by congress and the obligatory youtube docu summery I like to attach to my serious post. I'll see if I can PM send you the raw docs before I compile it all because I don't know how long it'll take. I saw you put the other info on "coli dot com" |
Yeah I'm still reluctant to go into the language talk because it's obvious that there are some serious assumptions made in his statement that must be dealt with before anything else can be mentioned. Understand the component parts of a language (grammar, lexicon(vocabulary, definitions),etc).... Random Example: Just because two languages share vocabulary words doesn't mean their grammar or definitions are the same. ("Obama" in Luo doesn't share the same definition as "Obama" in Japanese & "edo" in benin doesn't share the same definition as "edo" in Japan) If things like this aren't known we can't even fully start a meaningful conversation. |
![]() Ahh you reminded me of the scene from the movie airplane (Sorry, but I have to do it... to funny) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdCjbJ6NEfc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUw2fIa0dSI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fkZdz4Vz10 |
@KidStranglehold It kinda reminds me of when people say "Americans have no culture" then turn around and complain about cultural imperialism(rightly so!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyPMyWoDwj0 I think when people say things like this they mean something different then the dry anthropological/academic notion of culture which is quite broad. I think they mean "traditions" & "customs" that are held close to a society which also distinguishes them from other societies thereby branding them as unique. So If they don't see something that those people do that others don't do also they assume they have no culture. Now If you follow marimba ani she'll tell you that Europeans hide their culture aggression behind the practice of universalism & proselytization. Put another way, the reason much doesn't stick out as unique is because they push their "distinct cultural products" on the rest of the world. (gotta love that "civilizing mission" ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl3SbQgjjFk Coupled with that push is certain aspects of African American culture.... which is why you have Asians b-boys running around ![]() https://www.thatsfresh.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/ichigeki.jpg |
