Sports / La Liga Takes Legal Action Against Pitch Invader by Raphkriz(m): 3:06pm On Jun 14, 2020
La Liga have said they will launch criminal proceedings against the pitch invader who ran on during Barcelona’s match against Real Mallorca on Saturday, which was supposed to be behind closed doors.
In the 52nd minute of Barca’s 4-0 win at Son Moix, a man wearing an Argentina shirt with Lionel Messi’s name on the back entered the pitch and posed for a picture on his phone near Jordi Alba.
He was not wearing either a mask or gloves and was chased before being caught and escorted away by security.
La Liga has imposed strict a medical protocol for matches, which resumed in the top flight on Thursday with Sevilla’s victory over Real Betis.
Fewer than 300 people are allowed into stadiums and games are closed to the public.
“La Liga will file criminal actions against the invader who entered the pitch without permission and broke the protocols established in current health legislation and disobeyed the orders of private security personnel,” a statement from the league said. “His actions constitute a crime.”
It added: “La Liga wants to express its absolute condemnation of this type of conduct that jeopardises the health of others and the integrity of the competition.”

Crime / One Dead, Two Missing After Downpour In Kwara by Raphkriz(m): 2:59pm On Jun 14, 2020
Torrential rainfall on Saturday night claimed the life of yet-to-be-identified person in Ilorin, Kwara capital.
The heavy downpour also allegedly swept away two persons when a vehicle plunged into the canal of the partially collapsed Oko-Erin bridge.
The heavy rains, which started few minutes past 10pm destroyed the setback of the bridge making it partially impassable.
It was gathered that the body of the dead person was found around Coca-Cola area of the metropolis, but the two other victims are still missing.
Scores of security personnel and traffic controllers were on hand on Sunday, controlling human and vehicular movement in and out of the area.

The State Government attributed the collapse of the bridge to illegal construction on setbacks and waterways.
Media aide to Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, who was also at the scene, Rafiu Ajakaye, said drastic measures would soon be taken to curtail indiscriminate dumping of refuse of canals and drainages.
He promised that government would urgently effect the repair of the collapsed setback of the bridge.
Ajakaye equally warned residents of the state to desist from constructing on the waterways.
“As you can see the commissioner of works had visited the affected bridge. Proper assessment would be done and decision would be taken. The collapse of the setback not the bridge in itself, was caused by people’s encroachment. Governemnt will take necessary steps that this does not happen again,” he added.

Chelsea will reportedly make a move for Southampton keeper Fraser Forster, as Frank Lampard continues to rebuild his squad, according to reports.
The Blues are first working on completing the formalities of the Timo Werner deal, as the RB Leipzig striker is set to join for £53million.

Lampard will then look to strengthen his goalkeeping options.
It was earlier reported that Kepa Arrizabalaga has nine games to save his Chelsea career, with Nick Pope and Andre Onana named as potential targets to replace him
The Spaniard has had a turbulent Chelsea career after moving to the Premier League in a record-breaking £72million deal in 2018.
He was dropped midway through the season by Lampard after a string of errors, returning to the lineup shortly before the coronavirus pandemic brought the league to a halt.

And Football Insider claim Chelsea are also interested in Forster, who has been on loan at Celtic from Southampton this season.
The Scottish champions are thought to be keen to make the move permanent, but Forster could be tempter by a move to Stamford Bridge.

(Photo by Javier SORIANO / AFP)
Danny Jordaan , the man who spearheaded the 2010 World Cup, believes the tournament put an end to “ Afro-pessimism” and helped transform the African continent from “ hopeless to hopeful” .
Ten years after the event , Jordaan told AFP the World Cup put sceptics firmly in their place and sparked a boom for Africa.
In 2004 , when then -FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced South Africa would be the 2010 host , it had already been a century since the governing body was formed.
“ It took 100 years… and the reason for that is a doubt that had been created around Africans and the African continent that they don ’ t have the capacity and they will never deliver the infrastructure, ” Jordaan said .

“ This is something that we have to contend with – Afro-pessimism. ”
After it won the bid, the country embarked on a six-year journey to deliver the required infrastructure including rail, rapid-transport systems , roads and freeways, as well as upgrading broadcast and telecommunication systems .
That came at a 33 -billion rand ($ 1. 9 billion ) price tag.
“ After 2010 , Africa became a destination for tourism , for investment for trade, ” Jordaan said.
“ The environment has changed from a hopeless continent to a hopeful continent , a continent of the future and now, no one can ignore the African continent . ”
He added , “ There is no contradiction between being African and being world-class.
“ It is again, the Afro-pessimism. We are not going to allow them to put their knees on our necks, ” he said metaphorically referring to George Floyd , the African -American man whose death at the hands of a white policeman in Minneapolis has sparked worldwide protests.
– Mandela ’ s appearance –
Jordaan , who was head of the 2010 organising committee and is now the president of the South African Football Association, hailed the tournament’ s legacy .

Education / JAMB Issues Directives To Nigerian Students On How To Access Results by Raphkriz(m): 9:44pm On Jun 08, 2020
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said students, who sat for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, can now print their result notification slips.

JAMB also announced that tertiary institutions in the country will meet on June 16 to determine cut-off marks for 2020 admissions.

Fabian Benjamin, Head of Media and Information for the examination body, said results can be printed free from the board’s website: www.jamb.gov.ng.

He said, “All a candidate needs to do after visiting the site is to click on QUICK LINKS, then on “E-Facility” where the candidate would be required to provide his/her registration details and the result notification slip would be displayed for printing.

“The printing of the result notification slip is free as it is different from the original result slip that comes with the candidate’s picture.

“Candidates can print their result notification slip anywhere in the country even from the comfort of their homes once there is internet access.

“The board has, until now, restricted the printing of result notification slips and had made it available to candidates only through SMS to avoid anxiety on the part candidates as well as prevent clustering at cybercafes with the attendant risk of COVID-19 contagion all in a bid to print result notifications.

“This new development, however, is predicated on the gradual easing of the lockdown and resumption of economic activities in most parts of the country.

“The board wishes to advise candidates to be wary of fraudulent elements masquerading as JAMB agents stating that it has not mandated any person or group to do the printing on behalf of the Board.

“Candidates are to note also that delegating this responsibility to third parties could result in wilful manipulation of their results.

“Recall that last year some candidates who abused this privilege by attempting to manipulate their scores were caught and are currently saving various jail terms. Candidates are advised to note that any attempt to forge the slip would attract stiff sanctions.

“The decentralisation of printing of result notification slips was done mainly to comply with the directives of the NCDC and other relevant agencies on social distancing. It is against this background that the Board is urging candidates to note that it is incumbent on them to adhere to other precautionary health measures such as wearing of face masks, washing of hands, among others, in order to mitigate the spread of the virus.”

Crime / Re: GO In Warri, Arrested For Raping Church Member’s 19 Year-old Daughter by Raphkriz(m): 9:31pm On Jun 08, 2020
Bishop Elijah
The popular preacher was picked up by detectives from Nigeria Police Force, NPF Area Command in Warri, Delta State on Friday June 5, following a complaint by the mother of the victim, the Warri Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, ACP Mohammed Muktar Garba told newsmen Monday June 8.

ACP Garba noted that the mother of the victim is a member of the church where her daughter was allegedly raped by the said Bishop.

According to ACP Garba,”She said the pastor had a dream that death is hovering in their house and for peace to reign, she should bring her daughter, Miracle for prayers (deliverance).

“The woman brought the lady to the church pastor. I think what really happened is that the pastor drugged that lady and raped her. I personally took the lady to the hospital because she was in coma for two(2) days.

“We are looking for this pastor for the past three weeks. Later on used my detectives to trace where he hide and I got him arrested and am charging him to Court now. This is somebody that I arrested since Friday. He has been in cell Friday, Saturday, Sunday and today Monday, I am charging him to Court.”

While noting that people tarnishing the image of good pastors, ACP Garba insisted that,”We have prophets that are good. We have churches that are very good. But I imagine a pastor raping his member inside the church premises.

“And it is this same pastor that’s making allegation that the Police are looking for money to release him. He has a right to say whatever he wants to say. But as far as am concerned and as far as I remain the Area Commander, this man is going to Court and he must be charged to Court.”

While noting that rape is an offence in the sight of the law, ACP Garba said,”We have evidence to prove rape and we have established that this pastor has raped that girl.

“We have the pictures. We have examined her. I took her to the doctor. He has examined her private parts and we have everything to charge this man to Court.”

ACP Garba also denied allegations of collecting money from the suspect to release him or suppress the matter. “I did not demand a dime from him and I will not collect a dime from him. He must face the wrath of the law.”

But in a swift reaction, the suspect, Bishop Elijah Orhonigbe denied the allegations in its entirety. The cleric who spoke with newsmen on his way out of the Police Station to Court said,”I did not rape her.”

According to him, “She came to church on that faithful day on the 20th of May. The mother brought her to the church for deliverance and I prayed for her in front of the alter in the presence of three people. Immediately, after the prayer, she left the church at 12. She came back 5 ‘o’ clock with policemen and crowd saying this is the man. If not, I did not rape her.”

Narrating her ordeal before newsmen, the victim, a nineteen years old girl(names withheld) said she was a member of the church during her cradle age before she stopped. She said the suspect saw a vision and asked her mother to bring her for deliverance.

The victim pointed out that the cleric said she(victim) slept with a suspected internet fraudster(Yahoo Boy) and that they cleaned her up with a handkerchief with an intention to use her for ritual.

The victim claimed that the cleric gave her olive oil to insert in her private part just as he also gave her more to drink before asking her to strip naked and lie down on a mat in the church with the sliding windows and doors closed.

“He started fucking me through back. That was all I could remember. There were sperm all over my body. I shouted. He even said I should come again”. She is demanding for justice saying,”I want to be the last he will do this to.”

Also, in her narrative, Mother of the victim, Mrs. Taye Edema corroborated the claims of her daughter just as she demanded that justice prevails on the matter. “They didn’t give me a dime. I don’t want to collect any money. I want justice.”, she said.

A human Right activist, Comrade Israel Joe who was also at the police station, insisted that justice must prevail on the matter.

While noting that the human right bodies in the State are not fighting the body of Christ, Joe said,”We are fighting against Antichrist not the body of Christ.

“So, we stand for justice. We want justice to be done. Rape is a criminal offence and it has been criminalized by our law and society.

“So, there is no what anybody will want to compromise the issue that has to do with rape and defilement. I am happy the Police is standing for justice. The press are standing for justice and collectively, we are saying No to rape and the Bishop should be taken to Court and prosecuted with all laws that has to do with rape and defilement”, he added.

When contacted, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Hafiz Inuwa confirmed the arrest of the Bishop in a telephone chat with Our Correspondent in Warri .

The Police Commissioner said,”Yes, I am aware even though out of the state on official duties. I have been fully briefed by the Area Commander. It’s a case of rape in which the Bishop drugged the girl in the pretext of deliverance when he thereafter raped her.

“All efforts to make the Police compromised on the case hit a brick wall because the law of this country is not a respecter of anyone. We remain resolute to be just in our investigation.”

Earlier, Counsel to the Bishop, Presley Okojie (Esq.) in an interview with newsmen at the Area Command said,”The story is not correct. The Police are still investigating the matter. My own duty is to represent my client to see how I can secure Police administrative bail. But if the Police say No, if they say they want to arraign him, so be it.”

The legal practitioner who denied that the Area Commander in Warri allegedly collected money from the suspect to release him on bail, said, “he who asserts, must prove. The person should come and tell us how and when.”

Lawyer to the Victim’s family, Prince Clem Ade Omotoye Esq condemned the act in all its ramifications saying,”We are ready to follow the matter to its logical conclusion.”

Health / Living With Male Infertility by Raphkriz(m): 11:48am On Jun 06, 2020
Infertility has traditionally been thought of as a woman ’ s problem, but this is far from the truth. Men are just as involved with infertility as women . About one out of every three cases of infertility is due to the man alone , and a man shares infertility problems with the woman about half the time .
A diagnosis of male infertility can be a hard challenge for a man to face . For some, it can even be devastating . Not being able to father a child can make you feel that you are failing at one of your most primal responsibilities .
Male infertility is real and it is a growing problem. We now know that infertility issues are split evenly between males and females. Each group is responsible for 30 per cent of infertility, and the rest is attributable to a combination of both male and female factors and unexplained reasons. Therefore , it ’ s important to have both yours and your partners ’ fertility checked if you’ re having trouble getting pregnant.
Rule of thumb is this: See a specialist if you’ re under 35 and have tried to conceive for a year, or if you’ re over 35 and have tried for six months . It is not uncommon that some men have the perception that nothing can be done about their infertility . This is not so , a lot can be done. For most men , advances in male infertility treatment offer real help .
The ultimate goal of male infertility treatment is to create a pregnancy . Ideally, if the cause of the infertility is reversible then conception can result from natural sex or assisted reproduction technique.
Understanding male infertility is the best way to go as a start if you are having such a challenge , either as a couple or as an individual.
Sperms are made in the testicles . They’ re then stored inside the epididymis , which lies on top of each testicle. Sperm are nourished by semen , which is made by glands along the way . Millions of sperms are ejaculated semen through the penis.
This whole process hinges on there being proper levels of the male hormone -testosterone- and other hormones as well as correct signaling from the nervous system .
Generally, couples are advised to seek fertility evaluations if they are unable to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. Most newly-wedded couples will have had a pregnancy within a year, but if they are over 35 , they are urged to seek an evaluation after six months , whether or not it is a male factor infertility problem.
There are a number of causes of male infertility. This malefactor contributes to infertility around half the time , and about one-third of the time , it ’ s the main cause of infertility . Most often , the problem lies in the process of either making or transporting the sperm.
The bottom line is that if you do not make sperms, that is you have a low sperm count, or you are making abnormal sperm, you might be infertile .
Sometimes, making sperm isn ’ t the problem, rather , the problem is getting the sperms where they need to go. If you have this type of male infertility , you may be having normal sperm in your testicles . Only a medical investigation can determine what the challenge is .
Even if there is sperm in the semen , but it may be abnormal, very low in number, or not there at all, that is , absent, you could still be infertile. The causes of this kind of infertility include issues such as retrograde ejaculation (when the semen ejaculates backwards into the bladder instead of out through the penis).
There may also be a genetic condition that causes absence of the main sperm pipeline known as the vas deferens. The problem may also be due to an obstruction anywhere between the testicles and the penis.
A thorough physical examination is often necessary to give clues to the underlying problems . The commonest test is the semen analysis, but sperm counts aren ’ t the most enticing topic of conversation for most men . However , if you’ re having trouble conceiving as a couple, and the female factor has been ruled out, you may need to have this investigation done. Genetic tests can also identify specific obstacles to fertility and problems with sperm.
Hormonal abnormalities can sometimes be treated with medicines or surgery and obstructions can sometimes be surgically corrected . Today, thanks to assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) there are very successful new male infertility treatment options .
These high -tech treatments give sperm an artificial boost to get into an egg . ARTs have made conception possible even for men with very low or abnormal sperm.
First , sperm is collected either from ejaculated semen or by a needle from the testicle . They are then processed and introduced to eggs by different methods.
The form of ART for male infertility is called Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). A single sperm is injected through a tiny needle into an egg. The fertilised egg is then implanted in the uterus. This ICSI method can be performed when sperm counts are extremely low or abnormal .
Although male infertility is best treated by specialists in a suitable fertility clinic, there are things you can do on your own to maximize your fertility .
You should not do things to limit your chances to produce viable sperm , such as taking un-prescribed medication, hard drugs , tobacco , and excessive indulgence in alcoholic drinks. All these harm sperm production .
Of course, living right helps. Anything that improves the quality of health, like adequate sleep and nutrition, should improve fertility.
Living with male infertility could be a huge challenge . Finding out that you’ re infertile can be an unpleasant surprise , to say the least. Many men feel emotional stress with a diagnosis of infertility.
Often, there is an embarrassment , but you should not confuse libido and potency with fertility. Quite a number of male infertility issues do not affect your primary ability to produce male hormones, or your sexual function ( to have an erection ) or your maleness.
Even if things look bleak, the experts always have hopeful advice : Keep trying, don ’ t give up. Many infertile couples eventually have a child with proper counselling and treatment.
Politics / Rape: Reps Propose Death Sentence, Castration, Amputation by Raphkriz(m): 12:40am On Jun 05, 2020
The House of Representatives spent over two hours on Thursday to debate the rising spate of sexual violence across Nigeria, calling for stricter measures to check the crime .
A member , Mr Rotimi Agunsoye, had moved a motion titled, ‘ The Need to Condemn the Rising Cases of Sexual Violence and Other Social Vices Against Women , and Police Brutality : Justice for Uwa Omozuwa, Tina Ezekwe and Others. ’
The House , based on adoption of the motion , urged the Inspector -General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to “ immediately cause investigations into the cases of Uwa Omozuwa , Tina Ezekwe, the reported rape of minor in Jigawa State , as well as all other reported cases of violence against women, with a bid to bringing the criminals to justice . ”
Punishments recommended for rapists by the lawmakers , while debating the motion , included castration, death sentence and amputation.
The House , however , voted on only one of the recommendations , castration, which was rejected by the lawmakers.
Last week, a 100-level student of the University of Benin was raped to death at a parish of The Redeemed Christian Church of God in Benin . On Monday , a student of the Federal College of Animal and Production Technology , Ibadan, Oyo State , Brakat Bello , suffered the same fate.
Also on Monday , three armed men gang-raped a 17 -year-old hawker at Oja Oba Market in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Angered by the rising cases of rape , the House urged the Federal Government to launch a more effective campaign against it and other violence against women and girls.
Also, the House “ mandates all members to dress in black at the next sitting , show solidarity with the victims: Uwa Omozuwa, Tina Ezekwe and others. ”
However, the lawmakers voted against a prayer seeking to recommend castration for rapists.
A member , Mr James Faleke , had recommended that persons found guilty of raping minors should be castrated .
Just before the prayer was subjected to voice vote, the Speaker , Femi Gbajabiamila, asked what would happen to an older female who raped a younger male .
The comment had generated a noise in the chamber . Putting the prayer to vote, the nays had it .
The resolutions were referred to the committees on Women Affairs , Human Rights and Justice, which were given four weeks to follow up on the cases and report back to the House .
Agunsoye, while moving the motion , noted several recent nationwide reports of gender-based violence against Nigerian women and girls.
He said, “ The House is worried about the disturbing , growing spate of violence against women and girls recorded throughout the country . It is worrisome that the most common violence against women and girls are : rape , sexual harassment, emotional and psychological violence and socio -economic violence. ”
He also said the police in Jigawa State , on May 30 , 2020 , arrested 11 men , including a 57 -year -old man , who lured and raped a 12 -year-old minor .
During the debate , the Speaker lamented the incidents , saying, “ This is such a sick , despicable and ungodly act . Ordinarily, I would have allowed the women to contribute but because of the nature and the seriousness of it , and to show that it societal cuts across gender. ”
A member , Chinedu Obidigwe , stated that the future of the country would be bleak if women could not be protected. He decried that female Nigerians were suffering a similar fate in other countries where they had been trafficked.
Another member , Ebun Olanrewaju, called for capital punishment for rapists. He noted that males are equally molested .
The Deputy Chief Whip , Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, recalled that earlier in May , the House passed a resolution that the police should check their men “ who are killing people recklessly . ” She said two weeks after , a policeman from Bariga Division allegedly shot a 16 -year-old Tina Ezekwe in Iyana Oworo area of Lagos State .
In his submission, Shehu Koko said while the punishment should be life imprisonment like in other climes, the challenge would be how to prove rape cases in court.
Contributing, Henry Archibong said while he agreed that laws should be made to regulate a society , the laws alone could not solve the problems .
Achibong however drew the ire of members, especially females , when he also blamed rape victims for how they dress.
A female member , Linda Ikpeazu, was seen disagreeing with Achibong and raising her voice from where she was seated.
The Chief Whip , Mohammed Monguno , raised a point of order to say that “ the honourable member that is contributing is not properly dressed , as you can see , he does not have a tie . ” He also said , “ Based on our dressing code , he is supposed to have a tie , so he is naked in the eyes of the House . He is not properly dressed . ”
The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila , upheld Monguno ’ s point, saying that Achibong should not have been called to contribute to the debate in the first place. He then called on another member to speak.
Kabir Ibrahim Tukura (Kebbi ) , in his submission, called for amputation of rapists.
He said, “ Every day you hear people talk to girls , ‘ protect yourselves, stay in your lane , ’ but nobody talks to the boy-child. Nobody tells the boy-child ‘ you need to respect women , you need to respect girls around you, you don ’ t touch girls inappropriately. ’ Nobody tells a boy that, and that is a fundamental issue.
“ If that is achieved, we need to also bring stiff penalties ; penalties like capital punishment, castration , amputation (sic) of the manhood. If you can stoop low to rape a child, I don’ t think you deserve to have manhood. You don’ t deserve it because it controls you , you don’ t control it . And as a man if you cannot control your manhood, you don ’ t deserve to have it.

Travel / Human Trafficking: Lebanon Stops Issuing Visas To Nigerians by Raphkriz(m): 12:31am On Jun 05, 2020
THE Lebanese Government has stopped issuing work visas to Nigerians visiting Lebanon to be employed as domestic workers as a way of addressing the rising incidences of human trafficking in the Arab country.
The Lebanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Houssam Diab, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting with the Chairman , Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri -Erewa.
He said the policy , which took effect on May 1 , 2020 , would address the abuse and violation of rights of workers “ as Lebanon takes these issues seriously. ”
A number of Nigerian ladies , including an Oyo State indigene , Busari Peace, who was put for sale on Facebook for $1 , 000 by her trafficker, a Lebanese national , had been trafficked to Lebanon by a syndicate with promises of lucrative jobs .
She was subsequently rescued by the Nigerian Mission in Beirut and her captor arrested.
On May 24 , 69 trafficked and stranded ladies were evacuated by the Lebanese Government to the country.
Commenting on the repatriation , the Lebanese envoy stated, “ Sixty -nine out of the 79 Nigerians , who suffered one form of abuse or the other in Lebanon , were evacuated at the expense of the Lebanese Government and the Lebanese community in Nigeria.
“ The remaining 10 are facing judicial issues bordering on alleged theft and attempted murder and that’ s why they were not freed or evacuated . Nine are facing theft cases and one is facing attempted murder. ”
Speaking, Dabiri -Erewa disclosed that Peace refused to return to the country despite entreaties by the Oyo State Government.
“ The lady said she had secured another job and would prefer staying back in Lebanon. Not even the plea by Oyo State , her home state, could make her change her mind as she insisted on staying back, ” the NiDCOM boss explained.

Health / Four Die As Fresh Ebola Outbreak Hits DR Congo by Raphkriz(m): 11:54pm On Jun 01, 2020
DR Congo reported a fresh Ebola outbreak in its northwest on Monday , the latest health emergency for a country already fighting an epidemic of the deadly fever in the east as well as a surging number of coronavirus infections .
The 11 th Ebola outbreak in the vast central African country ’ s history comes just weeks before it had hoped to declare the end of the 10 th in the east.
Health Minister Eteni Longondo said that “ four people have already died ” from Ebola in a district of the northwestern city of Mbandaka.
“ The National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) has confirmed to me that samples from Mbandaka tested positive for Ebola, ” Longondo told a press conference on Monday .
“ We will send them the vaccine and medicine very quickly, ” he said , adding that he planned to visit the site of the outbreak at the end of the week.
The capital of Equateur province , Mbandaka is a transport hub on the Congo River with a population of more than a million .
Equateur province was previously hit by an Ebola outbreak between May and July 2018 , in which 33 people died and 21 recovered from the disease.
“ This is a province that has already experienced the disease. They know how to respond . They started the response at the local level yesterday (Sunday) , ” Longondo said.
The World Health Organization said it would be sending a team to help support DR Congo response.
“ To reinforce local leadership, WHO plans to send a team to support scaling up the response, ” Dr Matshidiso Moeti , WHO Regional Director for Africa, said in a statement.
“ Given the proximity of this new outbreak to busy transport routes and vulnerable neighbouring countries we must act quickly. ”
– The eastern epidemic –
The Ebola epidemic in the country ’ s east has killed 2, 280 people since August 2018 , and officials had hoped to be able to proclaim it over on June 25 .
For it to be officially over , there have to be no new cases reported for 42 days — double the incubation period.
The eastern epidemic was just three days away from being declared over on April 10 when a new case was reported.
Seven new cases were then recorded , including four deaths, two recoveries and one patient who fled , and the clock was restarted on May 14 .
The WHO also extended its Public Health Emergency of International Concern designation for the epidemic, which has mainly affected the North Kivu province .
Two experimental vaccines have been widely deployed to fight the outbreak , with more than 300, 000 people vaccinated across the country.
However efforts to contain Ebola in the east have been hindered by attacks on health workers and conflicts in the country’ s volatile region , long riven by militia killings and ethnic violence .
The eastern Ebola outbreak is the second worst in history, after an epidemic in 2014 killed about 11 , 000 people — mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
– Coronavirus , measles –
The newest Ebola outbreak is the 11 th in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever was identified in 1976 in Equateur province in the country then known as Zaire.
The virus is passed on by contact with the blood , body fluids , secretions or organs of an infected or recently deceased person .
The death rate is typically high , ranging up to 90 percent in some outbreaks , according to the WHO.
The country is also fighting its own coronavirus outbreak , recording 3, 195 infections — 2 , 896 in the capital Kinshasa — and 72 deaths, according to official figures released Monday.
“ We are in an ascending period of the curve, ” Longondo said, adding that it was still too “ risky ” to lift measures imposed on March 20 to stem the spread of COVID -19 .
Under the measures , travel is banned between Kinshasa and the rest of the country.
No coronavirus cases have been reported in Equateur province . Mbandaka is 600 kilometres ( 370 miles) from Kinshasa , but the two cities are connected by the Congo river , with a trip down it taking about a week.
DR Congo ’ s coronavirus front man , virologist Jean-Jacques Muyembe, first identified Ebola in 1976 along with Belgian Peter Piot .
“ I have devoted all my life and all my career to fighting Ebola, ” Muyembe has said.
The country is also facing a measles outbreak which has killed more than 6, 000 people since early last year, as well as recurring flare-ups of cholera and malaria.

Joseph Amoubi, a Nigerian man murdered in Qawra earlier this year, will finally be laid to rest in Malta with the €6,000 raised to repatriate his body being put towards supporting his young widowed wife and their infant son.

The young father was murdered in his apartment in Qawra after an argument with an apartment-mate got out of hand; heartbreakingly, his wife Harmony was giving birth to their first child hours around the same time as his death.

Harmony even called to give Amoubi the good news… only to be told her husband was dead, murdered by a friend.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Malta’s local and Nigerian community decided to come together to raise funds to help get his body back home and support the young family.

A €6,000 goal was set, and within weeks they managed to raise €4,481 from an online campaign and €1,250 in contributions from the Maltese community. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, expensive cross-continent transportation proved to be a major stumbling block in repatriating Joseph’s body.

Lovin Malta was informed that Joseph will now be buried in Malta instead, which will cost around €2,000. The rest of the money raised will go towards supporting wife and child. Before any money is transferred, fundraisers wanted to inform anyone who donated to make sure they’re comfortable with the change in plans.

Repatriation is often a challenging task with the body of Lassana Cisse also yet to return home and be granted a proper burial, a year on from the shocking Ħal Far murder.

Science/Technology / 50 Journalists Lose Job To Robots At Microsoft by Raphkriz(m): 8:48am On May 31, 2020
with Microsoft are set to lose their jobs, as the American multinational tech giant reportedly moves to replace them with robots.

According to local media reports, those affected are contract employees working as curators for the company’s news website, MSN.

They perform functions such as selection of stories, headlines, pictures and other contents from news organisations for the MSN site.

The Seattle Times quoted unidentified insiders as saying the company has notified the affected workers that their services would no longer be needed beyond June 30.

From then, artificial intelligence would be used to perform the news production tasks in what Microsoft calls “evaluation of its business”.

“Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis.

“This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time to time, re-deployment in others.

“These decisions are not the result of the current pandemic,” the company said in a statement, according to the paper.

According to the BBC, Microsoft, like some other tech companies, pays news organisations to use their contents on its website.

“But, it employs journalists to decide which stories to display and how they are presented.

“However, Microsoft will retain its full-time news producers, whose functions are similar to those of the contract employees being disengaged,” Seattle Times added.

One of those leaving told the paper that their functions had been semi-automated for a few months now.

“It is demoralising to think machines can replace us but there you go,” the unnamed employee said, according to the medium. (NAN)
