Right from time immemorial, most artistes are always in charge of their song creation. From the recording of lyrics to the final input, the artiste is the executive producer of his work.

However, we’ve witnessed artistes selling songs or co-writing songs for each other. Beyonce bought the smash hit “Irreplaceable” from Neyo, Rihanna got “Diamond” from Sia and the list is endless.

However, back here in Nigeria, the case is different. Most artistes write their songs as these artistes know what it takes after being bred and educated during their early years.

But there are artistes who have to rely entirely on the output of their ghostwriters and songwriters for them to make any meaningful music.

Example of such is Davido.

Let’s see scenarios where Davido has had to rely on his ghostwriters.

1. AYE



Davido‘s 2014 hit was written by Runtown. Even though Runtown had denied it, everything about the song speaks Runtown.

From the lyrics to the producer which was Tspize, Runtown’s favorite producer, the sing was 100% Runtown hands down.

2. FALL & FIA



For those who don’t know, one of Davido‘s new acts, Peruzzi wrote Fia and Fall.

The reports that went round was that Peruzzi was Davido’s Ghostwriter and Davido decided to make him an integral part of his record label and also give him recognition by signing him to the record label.

3. PERE



We all know the story behind this song. Apparently, while Dammy Krane was still languishing behind bars in the US, Davido bought the song “Pere” from Dammy Krane.

Dammy Krane had earlier recorded the song with Producer HOD and it was one of those songs in Dammy Krane’s archives but after signing on to DMW and also in a bid to pledge loyalty and stay relevant, he sold the song to Davido.

The song received a mash-up from DJ Mustard and had HOD ranting on Twitter about his loss.

4. GBAGBE OSHI



Originally sang by General Pype and produced by Shizzi, Davido probably heard the song and fell in love with it. He reached out to Pype and offered to pay over a million Naira for the song.

Pype whose career has suffer a bit of recession decided to sell the song to Davido. Davido recorded the entire thing with his frog voice and made it the lead single of his 2016 EP, Son of Mercy.

Few weeks after Davido dropped the song, General Pype decided to release the original version thereby putting Davido into another mess.

5. LIKE DAT



Davido‘s last hit for 2017 “Like Dat” was one of those songs that was slept on in 2017. Most amazing fact is it was written by Tenie TheEntertainer.

Days before it was released, Teniola tweeted that The song was written by her and gave Davido a shout-out for giving her a chance.

6. IF



While many won’t believe this, If was written by Tekno. Produced by Tekno, evidence gives that Tekno Miles wrote IF due to the simplicity of how the song is sung/written.

Tekno has similar songs such as Pana and Diana that contain the simple style as If.

With all these pointed out, one really need to ask if Davido Ever Write Any Of His Songs By Himself?!

Imagine surviving the Titanic by swimming through the arctic water with nothing more than a pair of shorts, then being one of the only survivors out of your 70 friends being blown up in WWI, and then escaping another sinking ship on the coast of Greece.

This was a reality for John Priest- a British stoker (someone who puts coal into the ships’ furnaces) who survived so many ship crashes by the skin of his teeth that he was nicknamed the unsinkable stoker by the media.



John Priest- a British stoker

Born in 1877 in a working class district in Southampton, England, it seemed like John naturally had luck on his side.

In 1912 when jobs become increasingly rare thanks to strikes and riots, John was one of the very few who was able to get a job as a Stoker onboard the Olympic, spending hours a day hauling coal into massive furnaces for a few shillings an hour.



It was there when one of John's nine lives were spent. When the Olympic collided into the HMS Hawk in 1911, John was nearly killed on immediate impact.

However, being the lucky sonofabitch he was, John slipped away at the right moment, sparing him being one of the 576 men who died that day. Incredibly, this wasn't his first close call with death. He had previously worked aboard a ship called the Asturias that was badly damaged in a collision on its maiden voyage.

After surviving two ship crashes you would expect that maybe it was time to find a new career.

However, John decided to take a job on the Titanic simply because it seemed “safer” than other ships. And who could blame him.

The Titanic was a massive cruise-liner, with thick walls and virtually indestructible. Hell, the Titanic was nicknamed “the unsinkable” by its crew. No way in hell could something like the Titanic topple to the bottom of the sea.

They were wrong. On Sunday, the 14th of April 1912, the Titanic hit a whopping iceberg off Newfoundland. Unlike the passengers who had very little knowledge of what was going on, the stokers down in the boiler room were going through literal hell.

Icy water poured through the cracks drowning workers and furnaces alike—John and his comrades had to swim through the arctic flood wearing northing but shorts and a light cotton shirt.



Many of his friends drowned or simply froze to death, but John climbed his way through the Titanic floor by floor, hall by hall until he finally was able to get onto the deck.

However, he was too late. By the time he got onto the deck, the last lifeboat had left the Titanic. In panic, he decided to jump over the edge into the ice-cold water, where he bobbled alongside passengers and crew members alike.

Screaming for help and pushing through frozen bodies, he was finally rescued by lifeboat No. 15; he ended up being one of the only stokers who survived the crash.



Yet his greatest feat would happen in 1916 during the Great War. In February 1916, The Alcantara, a battleship that Johnson's​ worked on, intercepted the German raider Grief, which was disguised a Norwegian ship. As Alcantara approached, Grief opened fire. There was a short, ferocious, close-range battle, at the end of which both ships were sunk.



The part of the ship John was on got hit directly by one of the missiles. A couple of his friends were blown up in front of him but John managed to escape with his life.

When he returned to work, it was aboard Britannic, Titanic's other - even bigger - sister, which was serving as a hospital ship ferrying wounded soldiers back to Britain through the Mediterranean.

Having already survived a collision on Olympic and the loss of Titanic, it must have been with no small amount of trepidation that he joined the third of the celebrated White Star Liners.

If Priest did feel any nervousness, it was entirely justified. On 21 November 1916, the great ship struck a mine and sank near the Greek island of Kea. Once again, he emerged from the very depths of a foundering ship alive.

Luckily, this crash wasn't as bad as the Titanic or the Alcantara where he saw his friends die beside him. Nearly everyone made it—however 30 people did perish.



After Britannic, Priest would achieve one final escape from a sinking ship. On 17 April 1917, he was a stoker aboard the hospital ship Donegal when it was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel.

He suffered a head injury and would not serve again during World War One. 40 men died but yet again, John made it out alive.

Most likely realising that his luck was gonna run out any time soon, he decided to retire and have a family.

He was often at the very worst part of a vessel from which to escape, and yet he survived an astonishing litany of torpedoes, mines, icebergs and collisions to live out his days spinning tales in the pubs of Southampton.

In 1937 his luck ran out. He died peaceful in his sleep. The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic has sent 3,300 informers on house-to-house search for sufferers of coronavirus symptoms in Kano metropolis.

National Coordinator Dr Sani Aliyu, who stated this on Monday said 20 rapid response teams had been sent to reach out to those who needed testing.

Aliyu, who expressed appreciation to partners who aided the PTF’s response in Kano, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for assisting with about 30 vehicles, said all efforts by the task force had been in collaboration with those of the state government.

He said: “We continue to work closely with the state government to ensure that the problem and the issues in Kano are resolved as quickly as possible. We have a strong team, supporting the case management aspect of the response, led by the Federal Ministry of Health.

“In addition to this, we have continued to work closely with our partners to deploy technical staff to support the Kano response. We have at least 41 staff from the NCDC and 17 from the WHO at the moment in Kano.

“We have, through our partners, also funded two facilitators by local government area and will be establishing one sample centre per local government area in the state. We are grateful to INEC for mobilising 30 vehicles to be sent to Kano and at least 25 ambulances mobilised through the federal government, Dangote Foundation and the BUA Group.

Aliyu added: “We have also secured, through our partners, an additional 20 rapid response teams that will enable us to reach people who need to be tested in Kano, within a very short period of time.

“We have also mobilised 3,300 informers through the WHO polio programme for house-to-house search and they will be commencing a seven-day motorised campaign across major urban areas in Kano”.

His stay didn’t last very long though, as the club’s financial struggles meant that he was up for sale when the the summer transfer window rolled round.


Willian was touted to join Tottenham Hotspurs and even completed his medicals with them during the summer of 2013. However, that’s when the drama kicked in. Jose Mourinho, the then manager of Chelsea, was desperate for Willian to be part of his setup and this was the start of what went on to be one of the most talked-about transfers in recent premier league history. To wrap this deal up quickly, it was reported that Roman called up his fellow Russian oligarch, Suleyman Kerimov, the then owner of Anzhi, to express his desire to bring Willian to Stamford bridge.


Tottenham had thought that they had already had their bid of £30 million accepted only for Chelsea to seal the deal under their nose for just £32 million. Done with his medicals, Willian arrived at the Tottenham training centre where his agent was waiting outside. He then told Willian about the interest from Chelsea and that’s when Willian realised his dream was about to be fulfilled. He narrated the incident saying, “We’re going in the van, on the way, to get to the training centre. Kia, my agent, is already down there, waiting. I thought it was weird, he was already at the door.”


“I got out of the van and he said, ‘We have problems’. I said ‘Oh, what happened?’ Then he says, ‘Chelsea made an offer’. I said, ‘So I’ll get back in the van, you make do and I’ll go to Chelsea, I will not sign with Tottenham’.” (quoted by Football London)


Days later, Willian was officially announced as a Chelsea player. When Mourinho was asked about the controversial deal, he took a cheeky dig at Tottenham saying, “That’s the danger of medicals before contracts. The best thing to do is to do the medical in secret.”


With Willian reportedly announcing that he’ll be leaving at the end of this season (free agent,) Spurs would be looking at the possibility of bringing him to their camp and make up for their once failed transfer attempt. Hopefully, with Mourinho in the dugout this time, they will be clever enough to have the medicals in secret.


John Obi Mikel

This has to be one of the most controversial transfers in the history of football. In April 2005, Manchester United had announced that it had struck a deal with Norwegian side Lyn for their young prodigy Mikel. Their official website even claimed that the youngster had signed a contract with them. However, United never consulted his agents. The club had directly negotiated with the player and claimed to have struck a 4-year deal. This prompted Lyn in sending a fax to his agents abroad stating that their services weren’t required as Mikel had already agreed on a move to United and would arrive there in January 2006.


Confusions began when Chelsea, a few days later, claimed that they had already a deal in place with Mikel and his agents, however, Lyn completely denied such claims. Reports even emerged that Chelsea had arranged for the player to travel to Europe in order to sign him at a later date. Amidst all this, United moved quickly and held a press conference and officially announced the signing of Mikel. He was pictured with the Manchester United jersey and squad number 21. Mikel received several threatening phone calls and hence he was kept under high security. However, on May 11 2005, Mikel went missing during a Norwegian cup game against Klemestrud. He was watching the game from the stands moments before his disappearance. The issue got serious when Lyn Director claimed that the player was kidnapped and the then United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz went one step further and claimed Chelsea had kidnapped the player.


Later it emerged that Mikel had travelled to London with his agent John Shittu. After staying in a hotel for more than a week, Mikel stated to Sky Sports News that he was pressurised to sign for United without his agents present and claimed Chelsea were the club that he wanted to sign for. In a rapid response, United took the issue to FIFA and made a formal complaint about the behaviour of Chelsea and Mikel’s agents, Shittu and Rune Hauge. However, FIFA dismissed the complaint due to lack of evidence.

FIFA then claimed that it would take a decision whether Mikel’s contract with United will be upheld or cancelled. However, Chelsea intervened and recommended that the club would sit down with Lyn and Manchester United and solve the issue themselves. In June 2006, all three clubs reached on a settlement that Mikel would move to Chelsea and his contract with United would be terminated. Also, Chelsea would have to pay a compensation fee of £4 million to Lyn and £12 million to Manchester United. Finally, Chelsea went on to sign the midfielder in the very same month a few days later.


Arjen Robben

Another talented player who made a name for himself at a very young age, Arjen Robben was the hot prospect during the early years of the 2000s. Starting his career at Dutch side Groningen, Robben quickly moved through the ranks and secured a move to PSV Eindhoven where the wingers potential was unleashed. He won the “PSV co-player of the Year” award in his very first season along with teammate Kezman. After his impressive performances in the Eredivisie, Manchester United were the first club to make contacts with Robben. He travelled to London, where United’s the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson was waiting for him. The Dutchman was invited for a dinner by the Ferguson and it was evident that United had started to make their moves. However, United’s low fee and delay in contract negotiations paved the path for Chelsea to snatch up the deal.

Roman Abramovich, who was closely watching the events unfold, quickly sensed an opportunity to put in a quick offer of €18 million (£12.1 million), which was way more than United’s offer of €7 million – a sum that the then PSV chairman Harry Van Raaij told would fetch United only Robben’s jersey with his autograph.

Robben narrated the events himself recently while speaking to FourFourTwo magazine. He said, “I had a very good conversation with him (Ferguson) over dinner in Manchester and we spoke about football and life. I also went and had a good look around the training ground and everything was good, but after I went back to PSV nothing happened.”


“There was no real contact and the deal didn’t happen.”

“PSV were also negotiating with Chelsea at that time, so maybe they offered PSV more money? I don’t really know. I spoke to Chelsea and I liked their plans,” he added.

He further went on to add, “Had Manchester United offered me a deal straight after I met them, I would have signed there, but it didn’t happen and I have got no regrets.”

Robben went to become a key a player for Chelsea, helping them win two League titles, two League Cups, one FA Cup and two English Super Cups.


Pedro Rodriguez

This was probably one of the quickest deals that Chelsea have ever been involved in. Pedro had won everything at Barcelona and was looking to move to a club where he would be offered a role greater than impact sub. Manchester United’s interest meant it was all set for Pedro to make his move to Old Trafford and that’s exactly when Chelsea came out of nowhere once again. Pedro was being monitored throughout the summer by Manchester United. Ed Woodward even flew to Barcelona to finalise the deal, however, he was reluctant to pay the Catalan club’s asking price. Marina Granovskaia was simultaneously working on a deal for Pedro with Barcelona. Taking advantage of the situation, Marina put in a late bid matching the asking price while United were busy preparing their next bid.


Behind the scenes, the then manager Jose Mourinho and his playmaker Cesc Fabregas were busy convincing Pedro that his future was in London. He was also in touch with his former teammate Victor Valdes, who advised him against any move to Manchester United pointing at how he was ill-treated by the then Red Devils manager Louis Van Gaal.
