FG, UNIDO to establish small power plants in 4 states By NAN / April 15, 2015 / No Comments Energy Commission of Nigeria said the Federal Government, in partnership with United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO, plans to establish small power plants in four states, using rice husk to generate electricity. Director-General of the commission, Prof. Jere Bala said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN on Tuesday in Abuja. Bala named the states as Niger, Adamawa, Gombe and Bayelsa. He said an additional 5 MW pilot power plant would be established in Ebonyi to complement the existing 30 KW bio-mass pilot, using rice husk to generate electricity in the state. He said after the completion of the project in Ebonyi, government would then replicate it in other rice growing states of Niger, Adamawa, Gombe and Bayelsa. Bala said the replication was aimed at promoting industrialisation, employment and empowerment of the citizens in the country. He said the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with the government and UNIDO had brought about the establishment of small power plant development pilot projects in the country. He said the commission, in collaboration with UNIDO, had already established 150 kw small hydro plants in Waya Dam in Bauchi State, 130 kw in Enugu State and 400 kw inTaraba. Bala, who said the Federal Government had developed 30 MW small hydro-plant in Gurara, noted that many more dams would be built in partnership with private investors. “Many more dams are expected to come now through exploiting the existing down and realising the potentiality for electricity generation.’’ He said UNIDO, through its Regional Centre for Small Hydro-Power Plant and the commission, had developed lots of feasibility studies that would encourage capacity building of the people for the project. He said the issues of renewable energy in terms of power development had come to stay in Nigeria and it was expected to provide 20 per cent of the country’s power supply. The D-G said by 1999, the availability of power was less 2,000 MW while the installed capacity was 6,000 MW but noted that Nigeria currently had 10,000 MW with available 4,000 MW. He said that privatisation of the power sector would soon increase the level of electricity supply across the country. “The private sector has high efficiency which will improve electricity production. It is going to improve because nobody will invest and dump his money.’’ The D-G said the situation would improve as 75 per cent of Nigerians would have access to electricity by 2030. He said the commission was mandated to produce strategic plans for national policy to ensure adequate and affordable supply of energy. Bala said all these were integrated into the National Energy Master Plan and the Renewable Energy Master Plan, adding that a lot of development had been ongoing in line with the plans. The D-G said stakeholders from the power sector, the petroleum, the solid mineral (coal energy), the nuclear power sector and the renewable sector were involved in the development of the plans. Bala said the economic and social development of any country depended on the adequate and constant supply of energy, saying Nigeria had been growing about seven per cent from alternative energy. He said for Nigeria to achieve self sufficiency of power supply, the sector had to be private-sector-driven “and that is why reforms are ongoing at the power and energy sector’’. “Energy is necessary to drive growth. The grind is the cheapest sources of energy,’’ he said. He said the commission’s mandate was to develop strategic plans for National Energy Policy on renewable energy, adding that the renewable master plan was developed in conjunction with UNDP. He said the commission would collaborate with the public and private sectors, NGOs, academia, universities, research centres and CBOs, to establish synergy among the stakeholders for development of renewable energy.(NAN) http://nigerianpilot.com/fg-unido-to-establish-small-power-plants-in-4-states/ |

Jonathan Approves Establishment of Enugu Free Trade Zone By NAN on May 26, 2015 The Enugu State Government says it has received approval from the Federal Government to establish a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Enugu to serve the South East. The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Dr Jude Akubuilo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday that President Goodluck Jonathan gave the approval in April. He said that the FTZ, to be located at the Ninth mile corner in Enugu metropolis, would have 402 hectares of land and another 16.8 hectares at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. The commissioner said that Gov. Sullivan Chime worked hard to secure the approval. “We are waiting for the licence backing the approval and we are optimistic that it will come before the end of May. “If you bring in goods and it is cleared and taken to the zone, an enhancement will be done to those goods, you will almost get them tax free. “The industrial activities in the state will be astronomical because everybody who owns a factory in Nnewi, Onitsha, Orba, Nsukka, Ebonyi, Aba will be clamouring to have their factories in the zone. “ Jobs will be created, improved infrastructures, enhanced road network, enhanced rail activities will be enjoyed in the state,’’ Akubuilo said. He appealed to the incoming APC-led administration to support the development of the trade zone to enhance the nation’s economy and lives of people in the area. NAN reports that the FTZ scheme was evolved to strategically improve investment climate in Nigeria, by stimulating export oriented business activities through the strengthening of strategic national economic policies. It is to streamline administrative approval processes and provide a one-stop-shop service for businesses. The target is to also create an enabling environment for the growth and development of export-oriented goods in the non-oil sector of the economy. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/05/jonathan-approves-establishment-of-enugu-free-trade-zone/ |
Heartland FC Remains Strong Despite Changes in Technical Crew – Posted 6 days agoPosted in: Local News, Sports News Heartland in their performances in the Globacom Premier League despite changes in its technical crew whereby the technical adviser Erasmus Anu Ollotah was recently suspended by the Heartland management. Heartland currently occupies the 5th position in the league log with 21 points from 13 games, even as sunshine stars lead the league ladder with 26 points. Heartland defeated Bayelsea United 4-1 and hit FC Taraba 2-0 in the week 13games to remain stable in its pursuit to win the league trophy this time around. The Naze millionaires are building to clash with Shark’s FC of Port Harcourt next Sunday and according to the club’s media officer, Cajethan Nkwopara, the boys are in high spirits after their 2-0 triumph against Fc Taraba and would like to sustain their winning trend. However, soccasive checks revealed Heartland’s inability to draw matches. Apart from Kano pillars FC, Heartland is another team that is yet to draw a match after 13 games in glo premier league. They needed improvement in stalemating a match. Furthermore, heartland utility striker, Bright Ejike, has scored, seven goals so far for his club to be a joint top scorer with Chisom Chikatara of Abia Warriors. Keep it up Bright. The interesting aspect of the domestic league this season is the competitive among the clubs to carry the day that informs that the league may have a photo-finishing end. The new returnee, FC Ifeanyi Ubah (former Gabosfc) are waxing strong; ranking 3rd with 23 points in 13 games just behind Wiki Tourists with 24 points and the league leaders, Sunshine Stars with 26 points. The financial support of the club’s owner, chief (DR) Ifeanyi Ubah, the capital oil magnet, surely is behind the club’s spirit led performances as the proprietor wants the club to go continental next soccer season. Soccasive supports the idea of having strong and persuasive club owners who can foot the bills and ensure their clubs, represent Nigeria in Caf organized championship, give good account of themselves like the days of Enyimba International of Aba with Uzor Kalu’s involvement that won Caf champions league back to back for Nigeria. But the level of club side’s performance in Nigeria deteriorated pitiably in the last two soccer seasons whereby all Nigeria’s representatives crashed out in the preliminary rounds. Very unacceptable with Nigeria pedigree in global youth soccer so, for crying out loud, let there be a positive change in club’s representative at continental levels this time around. http://nigerianewspoint.com/?p=5924 |
Obinao sign N18.5bn natural gas deal for industrilisation 20:22 19/03/2015 Anambra - The Anambra Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Falcon Corporation, a foreign firm for the distribution of natural gas in the state. Ms Ngozi Okoye, Senior Special Adviser to Gov. Willie Obiano on Oil and Gas, made the disclosure on Thursday in Awka at a news conference on activities in the sector in the past one year. Okoye, said the gas project which was worth about N18.5 billion would facilitate the growth and further development of industrial clusters in the state. She assured also that the 20,000 bpd capacity of Orient refinery cited at Umuleri/Nsugbe, a joint venture of the Anambra Government and Orient Petroleum could still be delivered at the end of the year. Okoye, also Secretary to the State Committee on Oil and Gas, said the construction of a pipeline from the refinery to the proposed airport for dispensing of aviation fuel was ongoing. Also read: Oil communities threaten to shut down gas plant "A dual carriage road to the airport has already been flagged off by His Excellency and is nearing completion,” she said. Okoye said the government through the committee was actively involved in the plan to establish a Petrochemical Plant in the state. "If completed, the plant will have a 400 million standard cubic feet of gas per day extraction capacity and be able to produce 2,200 tons per day of mixed Nitro-Gas liquids. "It will also yield a 4,000 tons per day of Methanol, 2,300 tons per day of Ammonia Urea (fertilizer), 1,400 tons per day of Acetic Acid, 150 tons per day of Formaldehyde and 6,200 tons per day of portable water,’’ she said. She further said that the state now boasted of 13 existing viable Oil Blocks in the state. They are OPLs 228, 280, 901, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906, 907, 914, 915, 916, and 917, Okoye said. She said most oil production activities in the state were concentrated in the Anambra Basin, with OPLs 915 & 916 that had an estimated reserve of 193 million bbls Oil/Condensate and 30 TCF of Gas (owned by Orient Petroleum) witnessing the most activity. The governor’s aide, who restated Obiano’s determination to make Anambra industry-driven, noted that the government had proposed a cargo airport to handle international cargo as well as domestic passenger flights. Okoye said the airport for which license had been obtained, was a 50/50 joint venture between state government and Orient Petroleum and would have about 3.7km runway capable of handling big couriers. She noted that with the passage of the bill which sought to establish the Anambra State Oil and Gas Development Agency (ASOGDA) in April 2014, the Oil had become hugely activated. She rued the damage to Orient Oil facilities caused by the 2012 flooding, saying the production capacity of the company was greatly hampered but would come up soon if the wells become functional. Okoye said efforts were being made to get the Federal Government to include Anambra in the exclusive list of oil producing states by making it the 10th member of Niger Delta Development Commission. This, she said, was a major concern of Obiano and that the governor was already at it as its reality would attract more revenue and development. - NAN http://m.news24.com/Nigeria/National/News/Obinao-sign-N185bn-natural-gas-deal-for-industrilisation-20150319 |

Obiano Plans for Modern Abattoir in Anambra State Published on News 2015-06-08 13:48:34 Worried about the physical conditions in which butchers and meat-dealers operate in the state, the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has concluded plans to set up an ultra-modern abattoir in the state that will be managed in a manner that the slaughter, processing and packaging of meat will be done in the best possible hygienic conditions. To this effect, the governor last Tuesday signed an MoU with the management of Integrated Farms Ltd for the construction and management of a modern abattoir valued at $11.4m in the state. Under this agreement, Integrated Farms is expected to contribute 90% of the equity while the state government will contribute the remaining 10%. It was also agreed that 5% of the annual dividend would be set aside for giving back projects in the host community, Speaking at the agreement signing at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia, Governor Obiano said the latest MoU brought the total investments attracted by his administration in the past one year to $2.4 billion USD. According to him, the project is one of numerous such initiatives his administration had initiated across the various sectors with a view to securing a new lease of life for Ndi Anambra. He noted that having beefed up security in the state and taken proactive measures to improve power supply to Industrial clusters across the state, the coast was now clear for investors to bring their investment into the state, expressing delight that Ndi Anambra were now heeding the call by government to think home. Second Term: What Imo People Expect From Okorocha Posted by admin on Jun 29th, 2015 With the elections come and gone, the people of Imo State, while waiting for the cases in the Tribunal, have no option than to look unto the sworn-in Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to deliver the goods. However, in the last four years, Okorocha had unleashed his policies in his bid to improve the lots of the masses. But whether those policies worked well with the masses is hinged on his second term election process, which went into supplementary. Pundits posit that had Imo people been absolutely pleased with Okorocha’s four-year outing, there would not have been any need for him to struggle to gain a second term entrance into the Douglas House, as portrayed by the contentious election which went the full wire. However, having succeeded at last to scale the hurdle, it will be advisable to inform the Governor that he still has a lot facing him, to prove the doubting Thomases wrong that he is an administrator vested with no selfish interests. The worst thing Governor Okorocha can do to himself as a person and politician with the future staring at him in the face, is to assume that he now has the world at his feet having won his second term. Therefore, I believe that a second tenure for any Governor is even harder than the first, as whatever he leaves behind will be how he will be judged after he had gone, as there will be no other chance to correct any impression held of him by the populace. On May 29, 2015, the former Governor of Niger State, Chief Servant Babangida Aliyu had gone to hand-over to his successor, with his wife. But at the middle of the occasion, the former Governor and his wife were whisked away from the venue through the back gate, as the teeming youths of Niger State bayed for his blood. That is a wrong way to leave office after presiding the affairs of a State for eight uninterrupted years. The lesson here is that there is life after being Governor of a State. Therefore, I would like Okorocha to leave Imo State in 2019 on high ovation, not like Babangida Aliyu of Niger State. In that case, Owelle should revisit some of his policies which do not sit well with the poor masses of Imo State. Unfortunately, as it is with Leaders in Nigeria, none of the Aides surrounding Okorocha will tell him the truth. Of course, they have to save their jobs. There are salient matters the masses of the State would want their Governor to address in his second term sojourn. First, is the rumour about a palatial home which Imo people swear is owned by the Governor. But let me put it here that everybody knows that the Governor was personally rich before he won election in 2011. And again, his Salary and allowances can afford any Governor to construct any building. But in a normal clime, those holding public offices are expected to focus on their public service after which they can then face their private businesses and develop their personal lives. Therefore, it is morally wrong for a State Chief Executive to allow the masses get the impression that he is running his private business, alongside that of the State. This is the impression as regards the said Spibat Mansion, which its land, it was learnt, Okorocha had acquired before he became Governor. But rumour has it that it was developed while he was in office. Am I saying that a man should become wretched because he is a Governor? No. What we are saying is that such projects are handled with “diplomacy” and “discreetly” to avoid wagging tongues. Tales have it that President Muhammadu Buhari saw it and marvelled. Before Okorocha, Imo had Sam Mbakwe, Evan Enwerem, Achike Udenwa and Ikedi Ohakim as Executive Governors. You may ask yourself if any of them were linked to any such eye-popping projects while in office. My advice is that Okorocha’s Minders should know how to handle such issues, as it portrays the leader in bad light before the poor masses and electorate. So, the Governor should avoid such scenario this second term. Another issue is the present Sanitary condition of Imo State, and Owerri in particular. It is true that the Government has decided to tackle the menace. However, had the Okorocha administration earlier queued in on this matter immediately it took over in 2011, the dangerous sanitary condition of Owerri would have been. In 2011, Owerri was the cleanest State capital in Nigeria. Today we are starting afresh to tackle Illegal Parks, Hawkers, Kiosk owners, Petty Traders etc who have entrenched themselves in the State Capital now. There is nothing bad for an incoming administration to adopt the fine policies of the outgoing Government. This is the reason States like Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers are making rapid progress. For instance, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, despite the face-off with his predecessor, Rotimi Amechi, has said he will not embark on new projects until he finished those started by Amaechi. In other words, it will be beautiful if Okorocha completes the Flyovers started by the previous administration. History will not forget him, as it is Imo people that will benefit from the flyovers. And when embarking on such projects, the Governor should invite qualified construction companies, so that such projects can have long term guarantees. It will be to the glory of Okorocha that children born after he had left office would be making reference to him through his legacy projects. That was what Mbakwe did when he constructed solid roads in the State. The roads still speak for the Obowo-born Administrator after decades. Surely, Okorocha has tried in construction of roads, but it is quite unfortunate that many of such roads may disappear in less than two years after he has left office. Roads constructed by Udenwa and Ohakim still prove eloquent evidence that they were here. No matter how few such roads are, it is better they stand the test of time. Therefore, it would be a thing of joy to the Imo populace if Okorocha improves in his road construction this time. Another expectation from Okorocha is the permanent relocation of Government business to New Owerri, by moving the Douglas House there. If the Government House is moved to New Owerri, it will automatically move development to that area and decongest the Old Owerri, which is brimming with human population and traffic. It is no use subsequent administrations giving facelifts to the present Government House and demolishing historic edifices around it in search of space when there is free and fallow land begging for a masterpiece Government House of any size in New Owerri. Even if all Okorocha does in his next four years is to move to New Owerri, he would have engraved his name and administration in the annals of Imo history. The free Education policy is the major thrust of his administration, as this has endeared him to the hearts of many in Imo. But it needs to be reviewed and where found wanting, corrected. For instance, the story that the policy has reduced the number of Imo-born students into Imo State University should be looked into. The argument is that since outsiders pay fees, which helps in running the Institution, they are now given more slots than Imo State-born students. If it is the case, it looks penny wise, pound foolish, because the reason for establishing IMSU was to create opportunity for Imo sons and daughters to acquire University education without much admission hassles, faced in other Universities outside the State. Therefore, this second term, Okorocha should look into this allegation. No policy is error-proof, but constant review needed to stitch loose ends. It is very unfortunate that Governor Okorocha is the only Governor produced by Imo State that ruled for four years without conducting Local Government elections, no matter how flawed such exercise may be. Achike Udenwa in his eight-year reign conducted two council elections. Ohakim in four years in office did one. Therefore, Okorocha has the opportunity in his second term to erase this error. Conducting Council election is to Okorocha’s advantage. It will helps to build his party and expand his political base, as he is bound to produce most of the Council Chairmen and Councillors, including Supervisory Councillors, because they will all look up to him. Council election will create jobs in the State, and reduce pressure on the State Governor, as he can now have peoples representatives at the grassroots level who will help circulate the dividends of democracy. No matter how much the Governor concentrates power in his office, he cannot see everything that happens in the remotest of villages, but his “Eyes”, the elected Chairmen, can. That Udenwa till date evokes respect from villages scattered across Imo State is because of the LGA elections, which afforded him the opportunity to “make people” in the remotest of clans in the State. Therefore, it sounds abominable for Okorocha to finish another four years without conducting a Local Government election in Imo State. Imo masses want from Okorocha this time a compact State Executive Council made up of seasoned politicians and Technocrats, who will help him leave a mark on the State. Last time he appointed over two hundred Aides. Some of them had no offices, let alone official vehicles. When there is Expanded Executive Council Meetings, many will be staring at each other wondering what they came there for, not knowing they were all SSAs, SAs, and Commissioners. This scenario was what caused Okorocha’s appointees to lament that they were better-off how they were before they accepted their appointments. The reason is simple; the goodies were not enough to adequately take care of every appointee. But had Okorocha chosen a few and took good care of them, it would have been better because anybody given Government appointment is assumed to have “arrived”, especially by his relations and community. How would it sound that a follower visited his Commissioner from the village, and “Commissioner” cannot afford transport money? Or Commissioner visits home on weekend and was not able to “host” the teeming crowd trailing him/her? Therefore, the Governor cannot please everybody, and should this time appoint a few Commissioners, and other Aides that are manageable. It is to his own credit that his Commissioners and other Aides are well taken care of and respected by the populace, because they represent the face of his administration. On the issue that Okorocha surrounds himself with his Brothers, Sisters, In-laws and friends, whom he gives mouth-watering jobs, the argument is neither here nor there. There is nobody who will occupy that office and abandon his relatives. But what should be important is if these people are qualified for the assignments they are handed. However, the Chief Executive should not over do it. For those of us that live on information gathering, these are some of the things we hear from Imo citizens they want from their Governor. They say these things inside Keke, Churches, Beer Parlours, Stadia, Car Wash, offices etc. However, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is the man on the driving seat and holds the wheel. It is left for him to steer the vehicle whichever route he wants it. Late Ace Broadcaster, Buma Irokosima said “Advise no be curse”. I have passed the message. Please, spare the messenger, but take the message, if you wish. I rest my pen for now. http://www.imotrumpeta.com/?p=14499 |
Hope Rises For Ideato South School, SSTS, Dikenafai, As Prince Odoemena Moves To Revive College Posted by admin on Jun 25th, 2015 The sorry and disheartening state of the once famous and one of the Senior Secondary Schools in Imo State, Senior Secondary Technical School, Dikenafai in Ideato South, will soon be a thing of the past as Prince Uchenna Odoemena has passionately come to the rescue of the college in all ramifications. Addressing the school principal, Mrs Patience Uzoma and her staff in the principal’s office, Prince Odoemena, who came with two of his friends who are also old boys of the school, Engr Darlington Ibeh and Mr Victor Madumere, decried the level of decay in the school academically, morally and infrastructurally. He commended the principal and her staff for their selfless efforts notwithstanding, as he assured them that he and his team of friends (old boys) have decided to come in fully to help them revive and restore the school to her past glory. Speaking earlier, Engr Ibe revealed that it has been a source of worry to most concerned old boys of the college seeing their alma mater decay to such a shameful state right before their very eyes. He commended Prince Odoemena who, after one of their usual discussions about the state of the college, decided to ignite the fire of intervention and revival in the school. Engr Ibe, while addressing the students, stressed on the need for increase in reading culture and habit. Contributing, Mr Madumere went back memory lane to recall how good it used to feel to be a student or teacher at SSTS and even coming around the school premises. All he regretted is in the opposite presently and extolled Prince Odoemena for his understanding and patriotism. The highlight of the visit was the presentation of fifteen copies of the book “The Daylight Pestilence” written by Engr Darlington Ibeh to the school by Prince Odoemena who also promised to register West African Examination Council (WAEC) for all the SS3 students, sponsor academic competitions in the school and help to revive the dilapidated infrastructural facilities no matter how little. On behalf of the staff, the principal, Mrs Uzoma, thanked Prince Odoemena and his team for the kind and timely intervention, as she stressed the nonchalant attitude of parents towards encouraging their children and wards academically and morally. She promised that the staff will surely sustain if not upgrade their efforts, as they now know that there are patriotic indigenes of the community and old boys of the college who appreciate and are ready to help their efforts. Engr Ibeh benevolently appreciated about five students who were able to prove that they had read one or two novels on their own with a copy of his novel each as a source of encouragement and inspiration to read more. http://www.imotrumpeta.com/?p=14495 |

Imo And War Of Traditional Rulers Posted by admin on Jun 22nd, 2015 and filed under Columnists. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0. You can leave a response or trackback to this entry ekpee One of the Institutions the Democratic System of Governance in Imo State has helped to destroy, than to consolidate, is the Traditional Rulership. Instead of strengthening the Traditional stools that dates back centuries, democracy and politics have reduced the revered Institution to a two-a-penny market. As I write this piece, there are over two hundred autonomous communities in the state, with Traditional Rulers. While any “Big Man” can approach the Government and be carved out his own autonomous community, some of those already made Traditional Rulers do not even qualify to “rule” their families, let alone a Kingdom. Presently, there is a war of attrition raging among Traditional Rulers in the State, which was necessitated by an alleged investigation and expulsion of some First Class monarchs from participating in activities of Traditional Rulers in the State. This war can be said to be between those Traditional Rulers that are benefitting and working for the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC, Government in the State led by Owelle Rochas Okorocha, and the other Group of Traditional Rulers, said to be “loyal” to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The “PDP Royal Fathers” Group is led by His Royal Highness, Eze Cletus llomuanya of Obinugwu Kingdom in Orlu Zone. llomuanya is the Chairman of Imo Traditional Rulers Council and that of the entire South East States, comprising Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia and Enugu. However, when the present administration of Owelle Rochas Okorocha defeated the PDP Government which appointed Ilomuanya, in 2011 election, the incumbent Governor decided not to recognise Ilomuanya, but appointed his own man, Eze Samuel Ohiri of Orodo Community in Owerri Zone as the Chairman of Imo Traditional Rulers Council. However, Ilomuanya resisted the sack and headed to Court to seek Justice saying his tenure had not elapsed. Luckily for Ilomuanya, the highest Court in the land, the Supreme Court gave a verdict in Ilomuanya’s favour as the authentic Chairman of the Traditional Rulers in Imo State. Unfortunately, he who pays the Piper dictates the tune. Since Ilomuanya cannot operate smoothly without the backing of the Imo State Government, led by Owelle Rochas Okorocha, he continues to operate like a General without troops, because Okorocha does not want him. Even after the Supreme Court had ordered that Ilomuanya be given the full recognition as the Head of Imo Traditional Rulers, it has remained difficult for him because it has not been possible to reconcile Ilomuanya with the Government of Imo State which he dragged to Court. Nor does Okorocha trust Ilomuanya, to leave the Leadership of Imo Traditional Rulers in his hands, since a lot of waters have passed under the bridge, because of the litigation of who is the authentic Eze Imo which has gone viral in the public domain. In the event, despite the fact that Okorocha refuses to accord Ilomuanya the respect he deserves as a Traditional Ruler, the Monarch gets Red Carpet treatment at Aso Rock, Abuja, from former President Goodluck Jonathan. Therefore, during the period the hotly contested Presidential election looked elusive to Jonathan, Ilomuanya coordinated some sections of Imo Traditional Rulers to honour Jonathan who visited Imo State in search of votes, as the situation became dicey. Even at that event, there were skirmishes between Imo APC women and Ilomuanya’s faction of the Traditional Rulers as they fought for the Traditional Ruler’s office, the designated venue for the Jonathan Parley with Imo Traditional Rulers, which had earlier been assigned to APC women as their office by Okorocha, in the name of Women Development Centre. However, with the elections over and Jonathan sent packing from Aso Rock Villa, this appears the payback time for Ilomuanya and his loyalists in the Imo Traditional Rulers Council. Indeed, as I write this piece, over fifty Traditional Rulers in Imo have been “investigated” and not only suspended, but may face “trial” soon. What Imo people are presently waiting for is the day they will appear before Eze Ohiri’s or the Conventional Court and their charges pronounced for Imo populace to note. It was learnt that a Panel headed by Eze Chidume Okoro, the Deputy Chairman of Imo Traditional Rulers Council found these “erring” Monarchs culpable. Among those said to have been marked for “trial” are two foremost revered Traditional Rulers in Imo State: Eze Emmanuel Emenyeonu Njemanze and Eze Desmond Ogugua. But what were their offences? That they attended a meeting summoned by Ilomuanya, who in the eyes of Imo State Government, remains sacked and deposed as a Traditional Ruler, despite the pronouncement from the Supreme Court of Nigeria to the contrary. With this latest imbroglio, there is no gain saying that there is trouble in some communities in Imo State, which if not properly handled may go out of hand. The foundation of every given State is the communities, which is the aggregation of the entire society. From all indications, if this matter of suspension and dethronement of over fifty Imo Traditional Rulers are not nipped in the bud, the issue may lead to Communal disturbances which may escalate beyond redemption. But unfortunately, in all these red signals, the Government of Imo State seems not bothered over what such desecration of Traditional Stools may portend for the State if the Communities explode into conflagrations for demeaning of their Traditional Rulers by the Eze Ohiri camp. Meanwhile, the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha even though aware of this time Bomb said it was beyond him, since it is a matter for Traditional Rulers. Hear the Governor “The attention of the Rescue Mission Government in the State has been drawn to the reported suspension of Four Traditional Rulers in the State and the trial of more than fifty other Ezes by the State’s Eze’s Council.” The statement signed by the Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo went on to say, “The Government in the State with Rochas Okorocha as Governor has a culture. The culture of not being vindictive even at the height of provocation.” With this statement, the Government felt it has washed its hands off this Traditional Rulers brouhaha in the State, pushing all the blames on the table of Eze Samuel Ohiri. It is not enough. What Okorocha’s Government is doing in this circumstance is just playing the Ostrich. Who does not know that Eze Ohiri has not got the power to suspend his fellow Traditional Rulers without the express backing of the Chief Executive of the State? Where have you heard a Commissioner or Minister suspending his colleague? As a concerned citizen of Imo State, I am appealing to the Governor, to solve this matter now, before the crippling crisis explodes out of hand. Unfortunately for Eze Ohiri and the Government, they picked the wrong elements in Ezes Njemanze and Ogugua. These are renowned Traditional Stools that their present occupiers and Subjects cannot fold their arms and watch to be desecrated. Both Njemanze and Ogugua Stools are not these “Ballot Traditional Rulers”. These are hereditary stools existing years before democracy set foot in Nigeria. For instance, the Njemanze Stool has been in existence for over Four Hundred Years. Nobody existing now in Imo State can tell you when that Stool was first “inaugurated”. Therefore, all the parties involved must be careful. I see trouble brewing! No matter what you give an “Owerre” man or woman, they cannot join in destroying their Ezeship Stool. Owerri people could be in disagreement among themselves, but not when it comes to their Traditional Rulership. The Owerri Traditional Stool is one of the few in the State that has remained hereditary till date. Attempts by past administrations to balkanise the Kingdom and the stool by “appointing” another Eze in Owerri domain has failed because no real son of Owerri-Nchi-Ise would connive to create another Ezeship Stool, outside that approved by their forefathers, which has remained sacrosanct till date. Is Eze Desmond Ogugua not that revered Traditional Ruler which Sir Warrior and Oriental Brothers Band sang with his name, when we were toddlers? Trouble Sleep, Yanga wan wake am! The office of the Chairman of Ezes in Imo ought to be a Ceremonial one whose holder could be called once in a while by the Governor to advise on Cultural and Traditional Affairs. But unfortunately, some of our Traditional Rulers have been converted to Personal Assistants, PAs, by politicians which is caused by the modalities the Governments in the State use in creating autonomous communities, and selecting Traditional Rulers. Before now, Traditional Rulers were revered not because of how much they have but for being the Cultural and Traditional representatives of the people. It does not matter how old or rich such persons are provided their people have chosen them as their king. When we were growing up here, it was not easy to see Eze Onuegwunwoke, Eze Emeana of Naze, Eze Njemanze of Owerri, Eze Agumannu of Nekede, Eze Obi of Emekuku, Eze Nwaturuocha of Mbaise, Eze Egbukole of Egbu and other revered Traditional Rulers. Even during the Military regimes, the Military Administrators go to their Palaces to see them. How many times did we see Eze Ibenye-Ugbala roaming around Government House looking for a PA to the Governor? Was it not Eze Njemanze that told late Governor Amadi Ekweche in his face “Na Kwa Echecki”? How many Traditional Rulers now can dare a Civilian Governor, much more a military Governor? However, the Imo Traditional Rulers are suffering these humiliations because some of them allowed Politicians to lure them deep into real politics. Most of them are the creations of Politicians, therefore are being used by them for political battles, which destroys the Cultural and Traditional neutral role expected of a respected Traditional Ruler. But talking about partisanship. Even if some Traditional Rulers were involved in identifying with a particular political party or individual, it does not warrant all the trouble going on in the State now. Does Eze Ohiri think of tomorrow? What if another administration comes and decides to destroy him because of the roles he played during Okorocha’s regime? That is why all parties should thread with care, for the future is unpredictable. And the Governor cannot fool anybody by saying that he knows nothing about this contentious issue. If he does not, he will soon hear of it when the matter goes out of hand soon. After all, he is the Chief Security Officer of the State. Nobody should be persecuted for being friends to any Group or individual. I see the hand of persecution in this matter. These Traditional Rulers are being “tried” for working for other political parties other than the incumbent APC in the State. Nothing more, no less. But it may lead to communal chaos which will do no one any good. Any matter that touches communal and Traditional arteries of a State is delicate and dangerous. Confronting the Traditional Stool of Owerri, which hosts the Imo State Government House, is a frontal assault on Owerri people. And they will not tolerate that. This is like touching the Tiger by the Tail. Whoever checks the pulse of Owerri people will know that this is a wrong time to try their patience. Please, Governor Okorocha take charge and pull this chestnut out of the fire before it gets late. Owerri people have been complaining how their lands have been taken away from them by the Government, to the extent that they do not have where to bury their loved ones. They once lamented how the Palace of their Traditional Ruler got burnt and the State Government looked away. They have complained of being marginalised in Government appointments and even of systematic plot going on to ease out their people from the public service top positions. For Mbaise Clan, any attempt to disgrace Eze Desmond Ogugu will “unite” Mbaise people, who are still raging that their son was denied the Governorship of Imo State through ungodly machinations. The atmosphere is too charged in the state for anybody to stir up any trouble now. And unfortunately, Eze Ohiri is from Owerri Zone, and may be accused by posterity of being used to disorganise the Cultural heritage of two respected Traditional Stools in Owerri zone and Igboland. Let wisdom prevail in this circumstance. Let the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha intervene and reduce this tension building up in Owerre-Nchi-Ise and Mbaise Clan, as the after-effects will touch all in Imo people. Caution! Caution! Caution! http://www.imotrumpeta.com/?p=14433 |
