Okorocha advises Igbo in North to stay put

ABUJA—Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has advised Ndi Igbo resident in the northern part of the country to stay in their locations during the elections, saying movement is only necessary if they are coming home vote.

Okorocha also enjoined the Igbo not to panic, assuring that the elections would be peaceful, free and fair.

Speaking in Abuja after a meeting between leaders of All Progressives Congress, APC, and its National Assembly candidates nationwide, the governor also dismissed insinuations that the party’s presidential candidate, General Mohammdu Buhari (retd), would pursue an Islamic agenda if elected.

According to him, the idea of Islamizing the country was propagated by Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which he accused of dividing Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines.

According to him, “it is uncalled for to return home. There is no need for it. The elections, as far as we are concerned, will be peaceful. Nigeria and Nigerians are only passing through a challenging period in their political history.

“That does not mean it will bring about crisis. I do not think so. Unless for Igbo who have registered at home. They should come home to vote. But those who registered in the north should stay there.

“Again, this is one of the things we have been complaining about. Since the advent of PDP, this nation has been polarized between Muslims and Christians.

“That is the most dangerous point PDP has introduced in the Nigerian politics. Before now, you do not even know where you come from or who is who. We were all one.

“But when PDP decided to go to churches and other religious houses, they polarized the polity. That is why the only thing they have to say about Buhari is that he will make the whole Christians become Muslims overnight.

“The General was once the Head of State with Idiagbon; very powerful then. With decree in their hands, they could not Islamize anybody. Is it now we have National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly they will do that? It is not possible.

“This is cheap politics by PDP and that is what is creating the tension. Nigerians love themselves and this campaign of hate introduced by PDP is also very worrisome.

“But what is before us now is more than the sentiments of tribe and religion.”

My brother, positions matter as a lot. Most of the projects their were attracted by Igbos were or are in high in positions. Examples are Lt Gen Ihejirika, Vice Admiral Ezeoba, Ms Stella Odua, Dr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, Barr Emeka Wogu, Capt Emmanuel Iheanacho, The head of DPR from Imo State, Mr Chidoka, Prof Nebo etc. So positions are important although positions given to corrupt and unpatriotic Igbos are useless because they simply use such positions for their selfish interest(s) without any benefit to their people.

Well the truth is not hard to get. Jonathan may not have performed well in road construction but in allocation of position and resources he has done well for Ndi Igbo.

Buhari’s Presidential Ambition How Archbishop Obinna Disappointed Okorocha, APC

Shock moments were said to have gripped top echelon of the All Progressive Congress, APC, especially the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha as their bid to woo the Catholic Church through the Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, His Grace, Most Rev Anthony J.V Obinna, met a brick wall, as the cleric ended up throwing more posers to the party.
Part of the Presidential campaign programme of the APC in Owerri last Monday was a courtesy call on the Archbishop after the rally at Dan Anyiam stadium, Owerri to seek support.
Trumpeta was informed that considering the enormous influence of Archbishop Obinna as an opinion moulder and one of the leaders of thought, getting the support of the maverick Cleric was part of APC agenda in the South East, hence the resolve to visit him at the Assumpta Cathedral.
Things however turned awry when in his reaction, instead of dancing to the tunes of APC, Okorocha rather threw up more challenges at Buhari and his top flight APC members which included Okorocha, former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Dr Christ Ngige, Senator and former Governor of Anambra state as well as Buhari’s campaign Director General and Rivers state governor, Chibuike Amaechi.
After Buhari’s opening speech which centered on 2015 election, Archbishop Obinna in response took exceptions to reasons why the APC presidential as military head of state took over power in 1984 from civilian government. Relying on his doctorate degree thesis, the Catholic held in Owerri Archdiocese said according to a report by the Leader Newspapers, a weekly tabloid of the church in the state.

Can we with the multiciphely of our conflicts stick together as one country.
Archbishop Obinna said to Buhari: “Well before I knew you, your name has been on my doctorial dissertation, published in 1984, And we are yet trying to forge a nation, one people one mind” He asked “Do we have one God or many Gods….?
Archbishop Obinna who spoke on wide range of issues further enjoined Buhari to address the issue of religion before giving chance to the APC team members like Tinubu who prayed Nigerians to deemphasize issue of religion in politics.
Okorocha however thanked the Archbishop for warm welcome and further informed the cleric that Buhari is the change Nigeria needs to turn around fortunes of the country. “If Buhari has not converted to Islam his cook and driver who are Christians, how can he Islamise the whole country”, The Imo governor added.

Rochas Will Pay For Insults On Jonathan Education Minister, Viola Onwuliri Spits Fire Again! Reveals How Rescue Mission Claimed FG Projects As Orlu Zurumee Asks Governor to Pack n Go in 2015

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has at different fora challenged the federal government to mention any legitimate project it has executed fully in Imo and this particular question has been putting President Jonathan and his campaign team to a bad light.
Against this back drop, Prof. Mrs Viola Onwuliri Minister in President’s cabinet, in a press session with Journalists in Owerri Monday presented numerous projects which the federal government under the leadership of President Jonathan has executed in Imo. She also declared that Okorocha must surely pay for the insult he has given to the President.
The minister for state on Education explained that President Goodluck Jonathan has done enough to Imo people. According to her, Mr President has done a lot of projects in the various institutions of Owerri including Imo state university that is owned by the state government.
She revealed that N5.5b was recently released to IMSU for the development of projects there. In addition, she hinted that equipment worth over N6b was supplied to IMSU for the upgrading of the Engineering Department and to make it more effective.
Prof Viola Onwuliri further said that the federal government provides N20m to support entrepreneurship at IMSU centre.
Other projects in Imo state under President Jonathan which the minister mentioned includes the twin storey buildings sponsored by federal government through Universal Basic Education (UBEC) in the 305 political wards of Imo state.
Contracts of Architectural Department at Poly Nekede, Rectors Office, Admin, block A,B,C ultra modern Diagnostic Complex pediatric Unit (FMC) Owerri. Projects at Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri Imo State.
Professor Onwuliri maintained that the federal government has raised the standard of living of Imo people through different agencies adding that more will be done if President Jonathan comes back to power after the election. She raised eyebrows on the claims of the state government on some of these projects mentioned.
She regretted that Governor Rochas Okorocha has to open his mouth and insult the president in the name of politics.
“Okorocha will surely pay for all the insult that he has given to Mr President”. Prof Mrs Onwuliri declared.
She narrated that she knew Okorocha very well more than those who claim they are close to him. The minister disclosed that both of them started in Jos, Pleatus state.
Imo is unlucky to have Okorocha as governor”. Prof Mrs Onwuliri also said.
Meanwhile, second term aspiration of Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State to govern the state may have suffered a major set back as the people of Orlu Senatorial Zone where the governor hails from have advised the governor to forget about his re-election bid as his first term was a disappointment to Imo State, particularly Orlu geo-political zone.
The apex socio-cultural organization of the entire Orlu geo-political zone, Orlu Zurumee, who cautioned the governor against dabbling into the governorship race, threatened to mobilize forces against him should he disregard this warning. According to them “no man however great is greater than his own people Okorocha’s. Second term will be a disaster”.
Disclosing this stance when the new Caretaker Committee members of the organization led by its President General, Prince Macdonald Akano paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Imo State and South East Councils of Traditional Rulers in Owerri, HRH Eze (Dr.) Cletus Ilomuanya, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Organization, Chief. Ray Okoro averred that “Rochas has failed us and there is nothing positive again he can offer Orlu People in particular and Imo people in general”.
The BOT Chairman who described Eze Ilomuanya as a goal getter and pride to Imo State, stated that “Rochas said he will stay for only four years and that a good student do not repeat class. We are tired of him just as his re-election will be a disaster to Imo State. Let him go in peace? He opined Orlu Zurumee is undergoing restructuring and therefore needed the support of well meaning Orlu people to achieve its aims.
Adducing reasons why Governor Okorocha should be halted in his second term aspiration, the new President General of Orlu Zurumee and former Special Adviser on Project Monitoring to Governor Okorocha, Prince MacDonald Akano, argued that “Okorocha has over stayed his welcome and that there is dire need for positive change in Imo State”.
Akano told Eze Ilomuanya, whom he described as a big masquerade that cannot’ be easily tossed around, that “when a true Igbo man takes over power by May 29, 2015 in Imo State, we will rejoice with you. Right now, we are in bondage”. He praised the monarch for promoting the identity of Ndigbo in Nigeria, positing that ‘as an asset the entire Orlu people are with you and your fight is our fight.
In his remarks, HRH Eze (Dr.) Cletus Ilomuanya advised the new leadership of Orlu Zurumee to remain focused as the task ahead is enormous. He enjoined them to be fair to all manner of persons, pointing out that Orlu people at home and in the Diaspora believe in them. “I have confidence in you and you can always count on my support”, Eze Ilomuanya assured.
Meanwhile, the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), got a boost over the weekend from the South East as traditional rulers in Imo State unanimously endorsed his re-election for a second term in office as Nigeria’s President.
The endorsement of President Jonathan during a courtesy call at the Palace Extension of the Chairman of Imo State and South East Councils of Traditional Rulers in Owerri, HRH Eze (Dr.) Cletus Ilomuanya, was thereafter followed by the pourng of royal blessings and libation for President Jonathan’s victory at the polls by the monarchs, who trooped out in their large numbers to welcome the President.
Speaking at the event, the Monarchs’ Chairman, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya assured President Jonathan of the total support of the Monarchs not only in Imo State but in the entire South East Zone. He said that the President’s achievements so far have endeared him to them, pointing out that Nigerians will appreciate more, the leadership qualities of President Jonathan during his second tenure in office.
“Imo State Traditional Rulers and indeed the South East unflinchingly support your laudable programmes and re-election bid. We, the kings have spoken and so shall it be,” Eze Ilomuanya told President Jonathan.
Earlier, President Goodluck Jonathan had commended the South East people for their consistent support, recalling that during the 2011 elections, “no party except the PDP got up to 5% of votes from the South East”. He stated that he is part of South East Zone, pointing out that this makes it imperative that PDP must win both the Presidency and the Imo governorship seat in next month’s election.
According to the president “Emeka Ihedioha is your in-coming governor. With Ihedioha holding sway here in Imo State as governor and I, as your President, we can achieve a lot for Imo State and the South East zone”. He thanked Imo people and the royal fathers for their prayers and support, assuring that he will reciprocate their goodwill

Imo Youth Demand For 10,000 Job Restoration

The collation of various youth organizations in Imo State converged in Owerri venue for this year Imo Youth Confab to brain storm on the way forward for youth’s participation in governance for the upcoming dispensation against 2015.
The theme of the event; “Youths Our Leadership Begins Today Not Tomorrow” had youths and their leaders numbering over 500 in a possession through the streets of Owerri to Rosy Art Theater Ikenegbu, to kick start the confab.
The youth in their agenda “The Stake Of Imo Youths in Pre and Post 2015 Election” unanimously agreed that 50% (fifty-percent) Affirmative action must be for youths participation in the 2015 government of Imo State with 25% (twenty-five percent) for elective position and 25% (twenty-five percent) for appointment positions which includes; Commissioners, Senior Special Aides in State and Federal.
They added that the State and Federal House of Assembly in Imo State must constitute at least 50% (fifty-percent) youth legislator, and all political Party’s must field a youth for the position of Deputy Governor for 2015 Guber election and any interim Government in 2015 must restore the 10,000 jobs.
Speaking Earlier at the event, a social crusader, youth activists and the professor of philosophy in the University of Uyo in Calabar, Prof. Uzoma Nathan stated that the confab was aimed at bringing together all Imo youths and their leaders who are dissatisfied with the happenings in the State and sort for the way forward.
He re-iterated the commitment of youths in Imo State in supporting every candidate with the interest of the youth at heart, pointing-out that 55% of the electorates in the State are youths who can determine the out-come of an election in every locality.
Prof. Uzoma Nathan noted that only the Peoples’ Democratic Party PDP have identified with the youths as partners in policy/decision making in the state, as he stressed that the All Progressive Congress APC have shown through their recent Presidential Primaries that the Youths and Ndigbo have no place in their politics.

Our next door neighbors are proud of the state of the art stadiums, standard stretch of roads, tourism development, world class drainage system, five star hotels, shopping malls, entertainment centers the list goes on.


But in the other hand, people of owerri are busy celebrating and bragging with brothels, individual homes whitewashed with paints to deceive the untaught. city gates and round about which even in the backward north is no longer sustainable are now a welcome development.

The first time i heard that Igbos are just clever and not intelligent i was upset, however my view on this is evolving to the point i beginning to think that lots of us igbos are dumb.

Okorocha and FG projects in Imo State

As the campaigns hot up, each political party is making frantic efforts to woo the electorate for their votes. While some are doing this with every sense of responsibility, tact and facts, some are embarking on it with bare face lies all due largely to desperation for votes.

The irony of this is that every government, whether state or federal, has four years to impact on the lives of the people. Nonetheless, when they fail, rather than eat the humble pie, you see some political office holders claim projects that they did neither conceive, execute nor inaugurate.

This brings me to the situation in Imo State today, where Governor Rochas Okorocha is appearing desperate for the people’s votes and in the process dishing out tissues of lies, taking credit for projects executed by the Federal Government under different interventionist funds. This approach to Okorocha may be an easy route to “victory”, but it falls flat in the altar of truth, civility and genuine accountability.

Okorocha must know what this election is all about; for the avoidance of doubt, this election is about the scorecard of the incumbent leadership, particularly in Imo where the average voter is raising serious questions about the much taunted achievements of the governor, against the backdrop of the many Federal Government projects executed in the state.

All these wouldn’t have been necessary, but for Okorocha’s vituperations towards the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, who had, in good faith, informed the good people of Imo about the Federal Government’s effort in bringing development to the state, an action which Okorocha found uncomfortable with.

During a recent visit to the three senatorial zones in Imo State – Okigwe, Owerri and Orlu, the electorate were surprised to learn that the projects which hitherto had been claimed by the state government as their projects, were actually those carried out directly by the Federal Government or through its agencies, especially in the education sector where Okorocha had declared free education. The governor and his team did not stop at verbally claiming these projects, they attempted to label them as their own.

However, before going into the education sector, let it be known that the Federal Government under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan, has completed 225 units of three and three bedroom detached and semi-detached bungalows; four bedroom row and semi-detached duplex and five bedroom luxury duplex at Grace Estate, Irette, Owerri under partnership with the Federal Housing Authority and Tangent Limited. Is Okorocha aware that the power plant and skills acquisition centre in Egbema have been completed, as well as the Amuzi Dam?

Perhaps, the Imo State Governor will also feign ignorance of the completed prototype hostels; 174 rooms with 696 bed spaces in Federal University of Technology, Owerri. This is in addition to the e-library at the Federal Government College, Okigwe, and the Federal Government Girls College, Owerri.

Again, a 1000-seater lecture theatre, Optometry Department Building, Engineering Block and gigantic hostel building in FUTO have been completed. Also, in the education sector, the Federal Government has built and completed a six hundred self-contained hostel building in Lake Nwabere, as well as the new ICT Centre and new Faculty of Law Building in Imo State University owned by the Imo State Government, which the minister inaugurated.

It is no longer news that the Federal Government built and completed the administrative blocks and laboratory at the Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo. This is besides the construction of a vocational school at Mgbee village in Orlu Local Government Area, procurement of 737,602 instructional materials for all the primary schools in Imo State, and procurement of 60,750 library materials for all Junior Secondary Schools in Imo.

The Federal Government believes in the education of the people. Perhaps, I also need to inform the Imo State Government that since 2011, through the Imo SUBEB, Okorocha has accessed the Special Needs Education Intervention Fund to purchase assorted textbooks and instructional materials for six Special Education Schools across the state.

Imo people must also know that from 2010 to 2014, through the Universal Basic Education Matching Grant Disbursement, the state got N3.4bn, as of November 30, 2014. Sadly, this is what Governor Okorocha has deliberately and erroneously claimed before the people as projects carried out by his government.

I will like to point out a few other non-education projects in the state to Okorocha. He wouldn’t pretend not to know that the construction of the Inland River Port is 90 per cent complete, just as the Owerrinta Jetty is completed. These two very important projects will no doubt help the Oguta people link up with other riverine areas in Delta State.

One would have expected Okorocha to give credit to whom credit is due, the Federal Government, for its unrivalled presence in Imo, rather than this grandstanding, which is bordering on hubris.

Now that the chicken has come home to roost, I hope that when Okorocha reflects on these disclosures, he will have the courage to first, thank the Minister of State for Education for bringing out the truth, and ultimately apologise to Imo people for this apparent deceit; that is what a gentleman should do!

Imo PDP elders urge Jonathan to woo Araraume

Determined to win the February 28 gove r nor sh ip election, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) el­ders in Imo State may have reached out to President Goodluck Jonathan to in­fluence the support of Sena­tor Ifeanyi Araraume for the flag bearer of the party, Emeka Ihedioha.

Daily Sun gathered that worried by the controversy that trailed the emergence of Ihedioha as the PDP’s gover­norship candidate in the state, the elders resolved to ensure that President Goodluck Jona­than intervenes in the situa­tion.

A source on condition of anonymity told Daily Sun that the elders wanted President Jonathan to prevail on Senator Ifeanyi Araraume to support Ihedioha by publicly raising his hands and asking his sup­porters to cease their hostility and rejection of the deputy speaker of House of Repre­sentatives.

The elders, it was gathered, were worried that except Ara­raume supports Ihedioha, the PDP would not be able to upstage the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

A top PDP national officer, Daily Sun learnt, was man­dated to book an appointment with the president for the el­ders to meet with him for the purpose of persuading Ara­raume to support Ihedioha for PDP’s victory in Imo State.

The source added that since it was obvious that Ihedioha could not win the Imo gov­ernorship without Araraume, PDP did not want to further lose control by ignoring the former senator.

Recently, after electing Chief Emmanuel Iwuan­yanwu as their chairman and Mr. Peter Mgbenwelu as secretary, the elders had ex­pressed worry that since the Araraume factor could not be wished away, there was need to convince him to support Ihedioha.

It was gathered that the el­ders’ dilemma stemmed from field reports that Araraume still enjoyed a large following in the state.

However, Daily Sun learnt that the feeling among the el­ders was that since Ihedioha had been presented with the flag and until the pronounce­ment by the courts, Araraume should be prevailed upon to appeal to his supporters and Imo people to support the deputy speaker.

But the development came even as Araraume campaign organization declared recent­ly that the only way to true reconciliation was for PDP to hand over the governorship ticket won by Araraume on December 8, 2014 to him.

Anambra State Launches 500 Mega Watts Electricity Initiative

It need not be over-emphasized that constant as well as regular electricity supply is the major driving force of industrialization and technological advancement the world over. Countries all over the world thrive in socio-economic activities due to huge investments in the power sector in order to create the enabling environment for economic activities to take shape. Trade and commerce, which are integral aspects of rapid industrialization, will not thrive if social amenities like electricity are erratic and epileptic. The role of energy in industrialization cannot be overstated . This is why the Nigerian government has also tried through various power sector reforms to stabilise the energy sector but some of the efforts made in this regard are yet to meet the expectations of Nigerians. Even so various state governments have taken up the central government’s liberalization policy of the power sector to launch their power projects to create the enabling environment in their respective states to boost industrialization as well as foster healthy competition in trade and commerce.

Anambra State is one of such governments that is initiating industrial revolution through the realization of 500 Mega Watts of Electricity in line with the policy on industrialization of the Governor Willie Obiano led administration. The move is being planned to actualize the government’s 4-point agenda in the areas of agriculture, trade and commerce, oil and gas as well as industrialization. Part of the government’s plan to tackle epileptic power supply in the state is to make Anambra State the industrial hub of the entire south-east and beyond. This decision saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with FALCON Corporation Limited recently at the Governor’s Lodge Amawbia Awka Anambra State. Falcon Corporation Limited is an organization with expertise in gas distribution and supply.

Governor Obiano while performing the ground-breaking ceremony which is the first of its kind since the creation of the state many years ago , explained how the partnership with Falcon Corporation Limited would be beneficial to the government and people of Anambra State. He further explained that the signing of the MoU on alternative power generation was for the industries in the state to have adequate as well as uninterrupted power supply, adding that the state requires about 320 Mega Watts of electricity to guarantee industrialization but currently gets only about 90 mega watts. According to him , the enablement from Falcon Corporation Limited will assist Anambra State in powering all her activities without interruptions. He said “we equally have other options to revamp ailing power projects inherited from my predecessor” and stressed that efforts were being intensified to guarantee more energy in Anambra State to power identified industrial clusters which in the long run would lead to the drastic reduction cost of production in the state. He pledged to work round the clock to ensure that the project come on stream as soon as possible for the benefit of Ndi-Anambra .

Responding, Prof. Joe Ezigbo, the CEO of FALCON Corporation Limited , praised Governor Obiano on the initiativeto revamp the power sector in Anambra State, stating that 12 years ago when the corporation came to the state to carry out power initiative which led to his interaction with past administrations, none patronized the company except Governor Obiano. Delving into the company’s past to buttress his argument, Prof. Ezigbo further disclosed that Falcon Corporation Limited pioneered gas distribution in the country for two years, starting at Agbara and Ota in Ogun State after which Shell Nigeria followed suite. He said the company at present has about 50 kilometre 10 inch gas pipeline distributing natural gas to all the industries in Ikorodu industrial layout in Lagos State . He boasted that the corporation would replicate its achievements in Anambra State, which could make it become the Tiger of West Africa as well as the fulcrum upon which industrialization for the entire West African sub-region could start and expand, considering that Anambra State occupies a strategic position within Nigeria as a gateway for the explosion of industries.

Prof. Ezigbo however assured Governor Willie Obiano that the partnership with Falcon Corporation Limited will be fruitful as the corporation plans to bring gas to Nnewi, Oba, Obosi, Nkpor as well as other locations across the state where there are clusters of industries to reduce cost of production, increase capacity, increase employment opportunities for Anambra people. For the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Oil and Gas, Mrs. Ngozi Okoye the implementation of the gas distribution project would bring a massive turn-around in the industrialization in Anambra State. Mrs. Okoye who noted that gas was the new source of energy, maintained that the gas distribution project was a laudable initiative and that Governor Obiano deserved the cooperation and support of all and sundry to make the project a reality.

Nigerian Aba Mega Mall Set for Commissioning

The first phase of the N300 billion Nigerian Naira (approximately R18 billion) Aba Mega Mall project, expected is set to be commissioned, The Guardian reports.

Once completed the project, which sits on 28 hectares land, will consist of 5 830 ultramodern shops, in four sizes of 12sq meters, 16sq meters, 24sq meters and 48sq meters.

According a statement made available to The Guardian, the facility will also have provision for banks, security post; 25 000sq meters climate-controlled warehouse space, restaurants, entertainment centres with six cinema screens, children play area and a massive parking space for over 5 000 cars.

The South East Amalgamated Traders Association (SEAMATA), an umbrella body of traders in the South-East region of the country, has endorsed the project, which they described as laudable.

Consequently, they have urged members across the country, to support the project, which has been described as good for the south-East region, as it would be providing the needed infrastructure, to ensure that the region regains its place in commerce in Africa.
Biggest mall on the continent

Group Managing Director, Geenfield Assets Limited, Paul Obanua, promoters of the mall, while playing host to Governor Theodore Orji on a pre-commissioning inspection tour of the facility, explained that the mall on completion would be the first mall with a dry port in Nigeria and Africa as well as the biggest mall in the continent.

The dry port according to Obanua, is going be a 30 000 square meter bonded warehouse, which affords people of the South-East the opportunity of getting their goods in, on time, thereby avoiding wastages arising from port congestion at various sea ports.

“We are going to also offer good storage facilities-automated climate controlled facility. So this mall is going to be a one-stop-shop. And by the second phase, you are going to have a 100-room hotel come up here at the Aba Maga Mall.

“So, we are going to have a section that will be called the Aba Business Resort, so that you have your events here, like conferences and when you are in the South-East, you can also lodge in and do your business.

Obanua, who was impressed with response from the business community, revealed that the price of the facility has gone up, due to demand pressure.

Jonathan commissions N18bn Aba Brewery

President Goodluck Jonathan has commissioned the N18 billion expanded and upgraded plant of the Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc, Aba.

Speaking before commissioning the new plant, the President commended Governor Theodore Orji for providing the enabling environment and infrastructure for businesses to thrive in Abia State.

He also commended the NB Plc for staying in Aba since 1946 and contributing to the economy of the country.

The President who spoke through the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, said the event shows NB Plc’s belief in Nigeria and that the administration is prepared to take the country into the future.

According to him, the expansion of the brewery which doubles the capacity of NBL plant to about 2.4 million hector litres is a milestone investment.

He noted that NBL supports about 279,000 jobs directly and indirectly in Nigeria out of which about 85,000 jobs are attributable to the company’s production and local procurement activities.

According to him, the company also sources close to 100 per cent of its packaging needs in Nigeria and 50 per cent of raw materials from Nigeria working closely with Nigerian farmers.

He disclosed that through the Nigerian Industrial Revolution plan anchored on manufacturing sector, cement production in the country has been improved from 16.9 m metric tons to 35.9 m metric tons annually and now exports cement.

In his speech, Governor Orji maintained that the expansion of the Aba brewery is a clear testimony of partnership between government and the private sector, adding that government’s responsibility is to provide the enabling environment for investors.

He stated that his greatest achievement in the state is security and thanked NBL for the investment in Aba which he said would boost commerce and trade in the city.

Ealier in their separate remarks, the chairman, NB Plc, Chief Kola Jamodu and the Managing Director/ Chief Executive, Mr. Nico Vervelde who said the expansion of the brewery started in 2012 and completed in 2014 makes the Aba brewery the most modern in the country and appreciated President Jonathan and Abia Governor, Chief Orji for their support towards the success story of the company.

Total Completes Gas Pipeline to Alaoji Power Plant

French multinational exploration and production company, Total, today announced that it has completed work in its facility that transports gas to the 500 million dollar Alaoji power plant in Abia state, South east Nigeria. The commencement of transportation of gas to this plant will help resuscitate the plant which has since been completed in 2013. The Managing Director of Total E&P Nigeria, Elisabeth Proust, commenting on the development, stated that the project was a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to deliver “better energy”. Alaoji Power plant Alaoji Power plant is located along the Imo River in Abia state. The power plant covers nine Local Government Areas in Abia state referred to as Aba/Ariaria Business District. Former President of the West African country, Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration gave the concession for the construction of the plant to a private power construction giant, Geometric Company Limited, with funds needed for the project raised from financial institutions. The project carried out with the help of some technical partners was completed in 2013. Power Plants Plans in Nigeria In the government’s effort to ensure quick supply of gas to the newly built power plants in Nigeria, the federal government asked Total E&P Nigeria (TEPNG) to complete a section of The Northern Option Pipeline (NOPL) from Km 38 to Km 50. This NOPL connects to Nigeria gas company (NGC) facilities. The project, which is being executed in a joint venture between Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and TEPNG is expected to be completed this year. It will deliver about 100 million cubic feet of gas daily to strategic power plants. However, TEPNG noted that the gas being supplied to Alaoji during this period will come from Seven Energy, while NGC will convey the gas through its pipeline and the section of TEPNG NOPL. The completion of the work will boost the federal government’s efforts at improving electric power supply in the country, with the plant expected to generate 1000Megawatts of electricity.

Onitsha commerce chamber wants FG to complete Zik’s mausoleum

The Onitsha Chambers of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture has urged the Federal Government to complete Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s Mausoleum, abandoned more than 17 years ago.

The President of the chamber, Dr Tim Anosike, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha, Anambra.

According to Anosike, the delay in completing the mausoleum is a show of disrespect for the late Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president.

“I know we are equal to the task; we can provide more than enough for that project bearing in mind the importance of the mausoleum. “So, what I am saying is that that project should be speeded up; whatever should be done to make sure that project is finished is what we are looking forward to.

“We are tired of hearing the stories that this project will take many years to finish.

“It’s something they can finish within nine months if they are determined.“

The president of the chamber said, when completed, the mausoleum would be a tourists’ attraction just as other mausoleums of great leaders all over the world.

He said, “When you go round the big cities in the world, you will see specially designed places meant for the remembrance of great leaders and statesmen and you will see tourists trooping in their thousands yearly to such places. “Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, popularly known as `Zik of Africa’, was great not only in the country, but in Africa and stands as one of the foremost African leaders that liberated the continent from colonialists.“
