Business › Re: How To Apply For A Tax Identification Number (TIN) In Nigeria by raystanley(m): 11:48pm On Oct 07, 2017 |
deturla: I have been receiving a lot of calls in recent times about how to apply for TIN in Nigeria. You will find in here all the detailed steps you need to know to apply for your tax identification number.
This is going to be a long read, but please take out time to read this since you NEED IT!
How to apply for TIN
Are you a Nigerian citizen working for a private organization or with the government. You own a business or you have the intention to start one? It is important that you know what a tax identification number is, and not only know but you also possess one.
A lot of small business owners believe that registrating their companies, business names with the CAC is all they need to be known as serious business men/women. However for an entity to be recognized in Nigeria, it goes way beyond registering with the CAC, but also registering for tax.
I have been receiving a lot of calls in recent times about how to apply for TIN in Nigeria. You will find in here all the detailed steps you need to know to apply for your tax identification number.
How to apply for TIN?
Are you a Nigerian citizen working for a private organization or with the government. You own a business or you have the intention to start one? It is important that you know what a tax identification number is, and not only know but you also possess one.
A lot of small business owners believe that registrating their companies, business names with the CAC is all they need to be known as serious business men/women. However for an entity to be recognized in Nigeria, it goes way beyond registering with the CAC, but also registering for tax.
I have your attention right? Let’s start with identifying what exactly is a taxpayer identification number (TIN).
What is a TIN?
The tax identification number (TIN) is a unique identifier for an individual or a company for the specific purpose of tax remittance. The TIN number is prepared by the tax office and issued to individuals or registered business / incorporated companies for proper identification and verification.
Why do I need a TIN?
As a business or individual, TIN is important because that is what shows that you are a registered tax payer in Nigeria, and as you know that tax payment is made compulsory, every company, business, individual must have their own unique tax identification number. After completion of registration with the tax office, the entity or individual is issued a TIN.
Remember that registration for tax is a legal obligation for everyone who is required by LAW to remit taxes in Nigeria.
If your company or business operates for profit and income is generated from Nigeria, then you are required by law to apply for TIN. Please note that incorporated trustees DO NOT require TIN! Take note of THIS!
Do I hear you ask again, why you need a TIN?
What else do I need a TIN for apart from tax identification?
There are other important things that a TIN can be used for apart from identifying a business or individual as a registered tax payer. These things are equally important as well:
1. Opening a of business account 2. Application for government loans 3. For foreign exchange and receipt of capital importation into the country 4. A TIN is necessary for licenses relating to trade, import and export 5. Registration of cars 6. Certificate of occupancy application 7. To obtain the Tax clearance certificate for individuals and companies which shows that you are a tax compliant business 8. To obtain tax incentives, tax waivers and certain tax allowances. Remember the recent pioneer incentive given to TSTV Africa?
How much will it cost me to apply for my TIN?
Applying for TIN is totally free IF YOU DO IT ON YOUR OWN and if you have not incurred any tax penalty based on the time-frame given according to the LAW to obtain your TIN, either as an individual or as a company. There are no fees to be paid unless you intend to employ third parties to assist you in registering and obtaining the TIN.
There could be a lot of bottlenecks in the back and forth involved in liaising with the tax authorities for the receipt of your TIN. It will be better to shift the responsibilities on a third party so you can focus on more strategic aspects of the business.
Application for TIN as a registered company
All registration statements have been made by the Joint tax board on registering for the TIN. If you are also the tech savvy business person, you can do all your TIN registration online by checking the FIRS service platform.
You need to know the various documents you would need to apply for TIN as a company already incorporated. Head over to the Federal Inland Revenue Service office closest to your company’s registered address in the list that is here, with certain documents.
For Registered business names
Also, if you are a registered business name and not an incorporated company. Then you need to apply for your TIN via the VAT registration, there was a recent unification by the FIRS office whereby your VAT number will double as your TIN registration number.
Also, in some situations, registration for TIN also comes simultaneously as registration for companies income tax and also value added tax as stated above. This can be possible if your incorporated business or company has been in operation within six months.
As soon as you receive your TIN, this should be displayed on all your official documents especially instruments of business/ financial transactions like your invoices. This is extremely key and important in the eventuality of a tax audit by any of the tax offices. The fact that the tax office now operates an integrated tax office now makes everything easy for tax payers.
How to apply for TIN: Individuals
Application for TIN as an individual
You have to head over to the nearest Inland Revenue Office along with the original and photocopies of your national recognized ID card like your driver’s license, permanent voters’ card, International passport etc.
You will also be required to complete and submit an application form.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TIN OF AN INDIVIDUAL IS DIFFERENT FROM THE TIN FOR A BUSINESS NAME OR A INCORPORATED COMPANY.

Business › Re: Eight Ways To Improve Your Chance Of Becoming Wealthy In Life by raystanley(m): 10:45pm On Oct 06, 2017 |
GentleNaaz: EIGHT THINGS YOU NEED TO DO TO BE WEALTHY
1. Wake up early.
Avoid spending a whole lot of the night sleeping. Wake up early to plan for the day. You don't hear of successful men who sleep a lot, if they did sleep so much, they won't be successful. Ride on op...
2. Set goals
As you have short-term goals you want to achieve in a short time, make sure you also set long-term goals for yourself. Setting goals gives you a target you want to meet and it also keeps you focused.
3. Read
Many successful men are readers. Instead of buying things that don't have value, buy at least a motivational book or a book on finance and money every month. Sharpen your mental skills. It helps in personal development.
4. Spend within your income
If you can't afford some things, make do with what you have, you won't die if you don't have them. So try to spend within your means.
5. Save to invest
Learn how to save out of your income. No matter how small your income is, you should try to save a part of it. Don't spend and then save what is left. Save and spend what is left. As you save, invest wisely. Don't save to save. Save to invest.
6. Avoid debts
Make sure you avoid debts. If you are not taking a loan for a business or a reasonable project, don't take a loan. The thing about debt is that when you clear your debt, you still end up needing more money because you don't have enough anymore, then you need to borrow again. Which means you still end up being in debt. So avoid it like a plague.
7. Spend less time in front of a screen
Stop wasting a lot of precious time you can invest in front of a screen. If you are not on television to look for vital information, online surfing to get useful information or your work entails you to do so and you are only in front of a television screen, computer or phone screen whiling away time, doing nothing but feeding your eyes with useless information, you need to quit.
8. Have at least two major sources of income
Keep investing until you have at least two major sources of income, with, perhaps, two other minor sources. Don't rely on income from your salary. Tell me of any wealthy man, and I will show you at least his two major sources of income. |
Career › Re: 4 Secret Ways To Survive In Lagos With A Small Salary by raystanley(m): 2:07pm On Oct 05, 2017 |
BiafranBushBoy: Are you asking how to survive in Lagos with a small salary? Or you have gotten an offer that is quite small and thinking of how to survive with it? I am going to give you real-life tips that would help you maximize your little salary and give you a bit of comfort from it.
The truth is that to survive with a low salary is extremely difficult. But with these ideas, you can pull the trick. The eventuality of this article depends on your spending discipline. If you don’t have low spending habits, I don’t think this write-up will do you good.
You can use these tips to survive in Lagos even if you are married and don’t earn so much.
If you are going to survive in Lagos with a small salary, then these tips should be at your fingertips. See them below.
1. Have another Source of Income
To survive in Lagos with a small salary, you need multiple streams of income. Even those who earn high find it difficult to survive on one stream of income, talk-less of you with earns such a low salary. It may be a general anthem in Nigeria, but I know that 50k can rent me a good self-contain house in Ibadan – but the reverse is the case in Lagos. This is one of the ways to even earn an extra income with your full time job
Earning such a low salary in Lagos should propel you towards thinking deep about other alternate means of making money. If you work in a place where you are paid low, and still don’t have time, then I guess you should quit (Hard decision with lots of benefits). There are other sources of income that can fetch you money on the side, a majority of them don’t even need any tangible amount of capital to start (I will write about it, later on, just subscribe to the post and get it in your inbox).
If you earn… let’s say 30k, and you have another stream of income that fetches you 20k or more monthly. You can spend the 30k salary all you want, and use the other as your savings – doesn’t it sound nice?
2. Learn to go the Distance
Those legs were made for a purpose, and it was designed basically for trekking. I remember when I came to Lagos newly and was placed on a 50k salary; I tried to keep up with the bus and bike lifestyle. Along the line, I discovered that I was always a debtor before the month runs out.
The month I decided to cover some short distances by trekking, instead of entering a tricycle; that was when I had enough to spare even after month end. I knew I had to survive in Lagos with my small salary, that made me take that decision.
Instead of biking just to cover a short distance, why not go the distance and save up the amount of money for something much more important?
Imagine you saving 100 Naira from your transport fare daily, couple with your main savings?
https://topwritersden.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/police-behind-danfo.jpg
3. Flexing isn’t meant for everyone
It might be tempting to just go out and catch your fun once in a while, but if you are to survive in Lagos with a small salary, then you should strike this off your to-do list.
If you earn a small salary in Lagos, then I don’t think flexing is for you. You are not alone in this position, as there are others who are in similar position. If you insist on spending 5k every weekend just to catch fun, you should know that…
5,000 x 4 weeks = 20,000 naira.
Imagine you earn 50,000 Naira, how would you manage and get those dreams in your head come to pass?
4. Avoid Unnecessary Spending
Gambling (Bet9ja, Nairabet)
Data Bundles (For streaming live videos)
Recharge Cards spending, etc. should be avoided.
The goal is not to remain like this for life; it is actually meant to be a phase of hard savings while waiting for better opportunities. You need to have some money that would help you engage in things that would enhance your job search.
If you spend all your money on the above, which one would you use to acquire training and certifications that can give you an edge in the job search market?
Lagos is filled with opportunities, but you have to sacrifice lots of things just to remain there. To survive in Lagos with a small salary is a full-time job on its own, so you should mind how you spend unnecessarily.
I would have loved to mention other tips like;
Budgeting Feeding (Eating at home) Saving Cohabiting with friends. But I also guess that you should have known already. The basic point I wish to point out is that all underpaid job seekers should endeavour to get other sources of income, whether you are in Lagos or not.
It isn’t difficult starting it, and it boils down to sheer diligence and hard work. If you own a laptop and you data subscription, and you aren’t making money online, then I believe something is wrong.

TV/Movies › Re: How TSTV Is Set To Change Your Internet & Satellite Television Experience by raystanley(m): 7:29pm On Oct 02, 2017 |
Opinionated: Many small businesses and even homes incur 2 bills that are not essential needs in the real sense of it but many people feel they cannot do without them -Internet and satellite television subscription.
Would it not be nice to have one solution that provides you with both at a cheap rate? This is exactly what the newly-launched TSTV is bringing. You can depending on how heavily you use data for example, subscribe to Internet and satellite TV for N3,000 per month or even less if you are a light user. Some people pay higher rates to get Internet on their smartphones alone. This for us is the real game-changing proposition that TSTV has over DSTV and StarTimes which are currently No. 1 and 2 in the Nigerian satellite/Pay-TV market.
TSTV explains it thus:
“We will pioneer the introduction of Smart set top boxes in Nigeria DTH industry.” it set-up box as the following features:
“HD SMART Set Top Box (Connected Set top box) converts your existing LED TV into a Smart TV besides showing you more than 100 Channels & services in High Definition and Standard Definition. While the DTH tech in it brings television channels in Standard Definition and High Definition, the Connected set top box allows one to browse content from Twitter, Facebook, Daily Motion, video on demand sites, Over the Top, OTT apps, news, weather etc. through applications residing on STB. Our HD Smart Set Top Box will work as a tool for personalization, engagement, and new customer experiences and with internet connectivity, one can convert one‘s TV into a smart TV using it. Subscribers are entitled to a complementary 20GB internet capacity every month and this service is available for extension on demand.
“TSTV STB Back-Office End-to-End Solution is an easy-to-maintain solution for delivering TV, Video-On-Demand, and interactive services to end users who use LAN. It suits for schools, hospitals, hotels, communities, securities firms and so on.
“TSTV STB platform also includes in-built fast Wi-Fi, up to 802.11ac, 1 GBit/s Ethernet and USB 3.0 interface. TSTV STB supports built-in Bluetooth 4.0, RF for hybrid remote controls and support of Smart Home services via Zigbee/Thread standard. Multichannel video recording is possible via fast external USB 3.0 hard disks up to 50 Gigabyte capacity. Our Smart STBs also have the capacity to make video calls with other TSTV subscribers via IP.”
Not only can you watch the channels that TSTV is having on its satellite platform, you can also stream other content from the Internet including but not limited to YouTube.
TSTV Purchase and Subscription Rates
TSTV decoder plus dish goes for N5,000 (you might have to pay extra for installation which is a separate service).
As you can see, very attractive rates:
TSTv daily plan – N200 plus 500MB TSTv 3 days plan – N500 plus 1GB TSTv Weekly plan – N750 plus 2GB TSTv 10 days plan – N1,000 plus 3GB TSTv 2 Weeks plan – N1,500 plus 5GB TSTv Monthly Plan – N3,000 Plus 10GB
This kind of ‘democritization’ of Satellite TV and Internet access to Nigerians is likely to unleash our creativity and force the likes of DSTV and StarTimes to provide similar or better services.

Car Talk › Re: These Are 10 Of The Most Expensive Car Parts To Repair & Replace by raystanley(m): 10:36am On Oct 02, 2017 |
Y obafemee80:
Unexpected and expensive car repairs can unnecessarily drain your bank account. While you cannot completely avoid car repair expenses,it is possible to reduce the probability of having to deal with the more expensive car repairs. The key to reducing car repair on pintexpenses is to maintain and replace parts before they fail.
If you aren’t taking care of your car, here are some of the most expensive car repairs you might face:
1)Transmission The transmission is the part that transmits power from the engine to the wheels, and it usually lasts a long time, before it wears out from rough gear changes and other stress that is placed on it.However,it's usually caused by poor maintenance and by neglecting to get regular oil and transmission fluid changes. Repairing or replacing a transmission is highly labor intensive and also very expensive.
2)Engine A blown engine is about the worst news that your average car owner could receive.Normal engine issues are the most common engine problem. But a blown motor means the engine has suffered so much internal damage that it needs extensive repair or a full replacement. There are a lot of things that can cause a blown engine, from a damaged valve to leaking oil to a broken rod. The cost of replacing your engine depends on your vehicle, your mechanic and the type of engine your car needs.
3)Head Gasket The head gasket is vital because it seals the engine cylinders and stops coolant and oil from leaking. When the head gasket blows,it takes a lot of stuff out with it.You’re looking at an overheated engine, leaking coolant and oil, and white smoke from the exhaust. The gasket itself is cheap enough, but the labour is really hard. You can help keep a perfect seal between the engine block and the cylinder head by using coolant to help your car not overheat.
4)Camshaft A camshaft in an internal combustion engine makes it possible for the engine's valves to open and close. It generally won’t break unless you neglect your servicing and oil changes and let dirt build up on the valves.Apart from the cost,a replacement camshaft is highly labour-intensive.
5)Cylinder A broken cylinder can be caused by continued neglect and ignoring previous warning signs like multiple misfires. If you get regular services you should never end up with cylinder failure.Scheduled maintenance ensures you won’t end up with a huge mechanic’s bill for a cylinder repair.
6)Fuel Injectors Both petrol and diesel engines have fuel injectors and it provides the right amount of fuel in internal combustion engines. One possible fault is leaky injectors, which causes pre-ignition or a flooded engine. Obstructions in the fuel filter can cause fuel leakage and dirty fuel to enter the fuel injector resulting in black exhaust smoke. It’s important to note that you have to replace all of them at once to keep the engine in good working condition, even if only one is damaged. The cost of repair depends on make and model.
7)Fuel pump The fuel pump is what’s responsible for supplying fuel at the correct pressure to the injector. It’s a sensitive and sometimes expensive piece of equipment that can generate up to 30,000psi. This pump can be damaged by metal shavings in the fuel, water in the fuel lines and poor fuel quality. The cost of repair varies depending on the engine type.
8 )Timing Belt The timing belt is particularly prone to wear given its excessive use so it’s important to change them out regularly per your manufacturers guidelines.Letting a worn timing belt go can lead to the belt splitting, causing serious damage to valves, pistons, connecting rods, camshaft and even the crankshaft, resulting in a staggering repair bill.
9)Air Conditioning Compressor The air compressor in your car separates the high and low pressure air when cooling down your car and its engine. There are a lot of different things that can cause your compressor to malfunction, such as a rod or valve inside of it breaking or if your engine belt breaks causing a ripple effect. The cost of repair depends on what caused it to malfunction, the type of car and your mechanic.
10)Radiator replacement Radiators can go on for years without problems, but they can fail if your car gets a front-end knock or if you neglect to use a proper coolant when you fill them up.If your car is losing coolant you shouldn’ assume it’s the radiator, since there are lots of other hoses and couplings that can fail too,and these are simpler, cheaper repairs. So make sure it’s definitely the radiator that’s faulty before you buy a new one.

JohnspeakU: 3 Life Lessons I Learned From A Shoe Cobbler By Johnspeak Uwangue (Motivational Speaker, Talent and Life Coach)
After moving to Lagos state to pursue my dreams full time, life made me to come in contact with so many people and among them was a shoe Cobbler whom I have come to regard as a friend. I've seen able bodied men and women complaining about how harsh life was treating them. Some even go as far as blaming their parents and even siblings for their predicaments. Meeting with this physically challenged shoe Cobbler friend of mine gave me another perspective about life, Career and business. He's my source of motivation because whenever I saw him, I always told myself Johnspeak, if this man could survive the harsh reality of life and business, I can too.
Today, I want to share with you just three out of the many things that I have learned as a result of staying with my shoe cobbler friend and as well as observing his perspective towards life.
- Opportunities Don't Just Appear He always told me that he'd have left his level if only he had taken advantage of opportunities that he got. So many people are busy searching for opportunities thus the sole reason for their instability. No matter your chosen field, you can always create an opportunity to excel. Always search for an open door even when every other doors seems to have been shut against you. Opportunities don't just appear, they are either created by us or by the forces of life working for us. Any opportunity you see was created by someone.
- Life Isn't Magical Oftentimes out of impatient and lack of understanding of how life work, we expect things to happen just like that. Anything that will last must obey the law of process. There are always two approaches to dealing with issues; the magical and the process. And the duration of the process is not determined by nature or life, it's determined by our preparation. Like I always say "It didn't take God twenty five years to give Isaac to Mr.& Mrs Abraham, it only took Mr & Mrs Abraham twenty five years to be prepared to have Isaac.
- Life Isn't Turn By Turn Whenever I hear people say that life is turn by turn I just find myself laughing, not that they are foolish No! but because they don't understand how life work. Hello! There are about seven billion people on earth, so, if life was turn by turn that means, most people would have died before it gets to their turn. Life is not turn by turn but step by step. We will only be presented with opportunities that matches with our present level and state of mind. Our state of mind is a product of our state of preparation. You can't give success to someone with a broken mind. Sometime this year I was wondering why I never got the kind of ideas and opportunities last year or two years ago that I am getting now. And then it occurred to me that my state of mind then wouldn't have been able to comprehend the opportunities I'm having now.
Opportunities will always come your way but will it meet you prepared?
Succeed You Must!
